GRADE 10 CIVICS COURSE OUTLINE
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic society. Students will
learn about the elements of democracy in local, national and global contexts, about political reactions to social
change and about political decision-making processes in Canada. They will explore their own and others’ ideas
about civics questions and learn how to think critically about public issues and react responsibly to them.

TESTS & QUIZZES:
Test dates will be announced well in advance. Quizzes may be given at any time, with or without
previous warning. All tests/quizzes must be written on the appointed date unless otherwise arranged
with the teacher.
HOMEWORK:
Daily homework is necessary in order to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom
Homework will include reading, completion of daily work and assignments, project preparation work
and studying for tests and quizzes
Students will know due dates for major assignments well in advance
PLAGIARISM:
Please be aware that the school has a plagiarism policy in place. Students are not allowed to
(deliberately or non-deliberately) copy and/or use another student’s work, give work to be copied, copy
published work without acknowledgement and proper documentation or submit another’s material as
their own. Any plagiarism violation will result in consequences which may include a repeat of the
assignment, a mark reduction, a mark of zero and/or suspension.

Daily instructions, notes and homework MAY be posted to the website. If you are absent please check
the website for missed work and attempt the homework that was assigned for the given day.

NOTEBOOK: Notebooks should have two sections:
1. Notes - It is the student’s responsibility to have a complete set of notes
-Titles and dates in this section should be included and underlined
2. Tests/Quizzes/Assignments - It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that he/she has the
correct solutions to all tests, quizzes and assignments
ABSENCES:
Students who are going to be absent and know about it ahead of time (i.e. due to a school sponsored
activity, doctor’s appointment, etc.) should notify the teacher in order to make necessary arrangements
Students are responsible for catching up on any work that they may miss when absent from class. Those
students who are absent from class must ask a friend (assigned under the “Buddy System”) about the
announcements, notes, handouts, homework, assignments and/or other work missed
COMPLETION & SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS & EVALUATION ACTIVITIES:
All assessment and evaluation activities are due on the assigned date or within the time frame specified
by the teacher
Under normal circumstances, if a student is unable to meet the deadline, the student has a responsibility
to meet with the teacher prior to the due date so that alternate arrangements MAY be made
If a student’s absence is valid, the missed evaluation will be due or completed on the day of the
student’s return to school. It is the student’s responsibility to complete and/or submit the missed
evaluation
Where a student has failed to complete an evaluation activity, after the steps outlined above have been
taken, a mark of zero will be recorded
Once assignments have been returned to the class, no late assignment will be accepted and a mark of
zero will be recorded
If a student misses a test, quiz or assignment due to an invalid absence (i.e. truancy) a mark of zero will
be recorded
Students who are under suspension are required to complete and submit assignments as per deadline
indicated. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain work from classmates. Students returning to
school from suspension will be given a minimum of 5 school days to complete any in-class summative
activity that may have been missed. The teacher will determine the date of the summative evaluation
activity.
NOTES:
1. It is expected that students will come to class on time, prepared and ready to work. Hence, students are
to arrive before the second bell with adequate supplies (i.e. pens, pencils, ruler) the correct binder and
textbook.
2. Students are asked to refrain from eating or drinking (anything other than water) in class. Garbage
should not be left behind.
3. All electronic devices must be off and out of sight during class.
4. The following learning skills will be monitored on an ongoing basis; initiative, organization, work
habits/homework, teamwork and ability to work independently.
5. Students must sit in assigned seats.
