    R ests

    A rest is a sign to show silence.

    Rests have different shapes to show different lengths of silence.

    Rests are sometimes dotted but never tied.

    Minim R est

    A minim rest is an oblong bar drawn lengthwise and restingon top of the middle line of the stave.

    Draw 5 minim rests in your theory workbook.

    S emibreve R est

    Asemibreve rest is also an oblong bar drawn lengthwise butit hangs from the fourth line of the stave. Make sure it does

    not touch the middle line of the stave.

    Drawing crotchet rests takes a little practice. The crotchet rest should nottouch the top or bottom lines of the stave.

    Leger lines are used for notes which are too high or too lowto be written on the stave.

    Leger lines are short straight lines drawn parallel to the linesof the stave long enough to take one note only.

    The spaces between are also used.
