Boys, Books and Basketball
As part of our focus on student achieve-ment, social skills and equity to access of learning opportunities, we are starting the Boys, Books and Basketball program. This program will run during Wednesday and Thursday morning recesses involving grade 1 & 2, and 7 & 8 boys. The pur-pose of the program is to both: a) en-courage grades 1 and 2 boys to develop an interest in and gain pleasure from reading by meeting with grade 7 and 8 boys on a weekly basis to read and play basketbal1, and b) give our intermediate boys an opportunity to share their read-ing skills, function as leaders and role models, and to enlist them to en-courage our younger male students to engage in regular reading for multiple purposes. The program begins on February 1st.

Reading Strategies Useful Strategies to Assist your Child with Reading
Establish a routine at home for reading: It could be before bed, on a Sunday night or whenever suits you and your child. You could even have a regular reading night where the whole family gets together and reads. This is one of the best ways for developing a lifelong positive attitude to reading.
Praise every effort: Especially when confidence is low, and even when confidence is high. Help your child feel good about reading.
Treat the child as an individual: Don't compare their performance with other chil-dren - it doesn't help because it makes them feel as though they are not good enough.
Be a role model: Let them see you reading. Take the family to the local library and take an interest in what types of books they borrow. You can even make suggestions, but resist the temptation to impose your own choices.
Show them that books are worthwhile: Give books as presents and show your child how to take care of them.
Encourage consistent use of the school library: Ask your child about the books they have borrowed and share them
with your child.
If your child is a non reader, don't feel guilty: The causes of reading problems are very complex and if your child is experiencing difficulties with this fundamental skill, the best thing you can do is to acknowledge the problem and do something about it.
Practical Ideas: Getting Started with Reading
( . . continued from p.1)
Teachers engaged our families with many Smart Board and Literacy games, and learned how to create 3-D Pop-up books. Primary students enjoyed playing board games like Scrabble, while others created new words using shaving cream, rice or play dough. Karaoke machine was a hit for our junior and intermediate students. All students snuggled to read with their parents in a cozy corner in the library and the staffroom. The whole community came back together to the gym to enjoy milk and cookies at the end of the evening. Thanks to all of the student volunteers who helped run Literacy- based activities with our Kindies. Con-gratulations to our Glad Park staff and families for an outstanding evening of fun and learning, celebrating literacy.

Winter Sun Safety
cold outside. Winter sun facts: Snow reflects up to 80 per cent of UV rays, which bounce off the ground, so

For The Love of Reading Used Book Exchange Students are invited to bring in their used English or French books (in GREAT condition) to the Library during morning recess Monday, February 6th to Friday February 10th. They will be given one ticket per book that is accepted. Then, on Mon-day, February 13th, Tuesday, February 14th and Wednesday, February 15th, students will be invited to come to the Library with their tickets to pick up a "new" book. As selections will vary, students are not guaranteed to bring home the same number of books they brought in. Leftover books will be sent to schools being rebuilt in Haiti. Mrs. R. Loomis, Teacher-Librarian
A Message from Ms. Lisa Jeremic, Principal at Wendat P.S.
I am thrilled to have been appointed as Principal at Wendat Village Public School. Over the next several months, I will spend time learning about the students, parents and school community. Investing time in
understanding the school community and building relationships is a crucial first step in creating a positive school culture that supports student achievement and well-being. Together we will ensure a smooth tran-sition for the children and build a sense of community. I have been spending time learning about the rich history of the Wendat people and the site of our school. I know this information will be very helpful as we work to create and build our new school community. I look forward to working with you, learning
from and with you, and having a positive impact on the lives of all our students. Our first opportunity to get together will be at the information evening on Wednesday, February 15th, 7:00 pm at Oscar Peterson
