GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Using renewable heat stored in the earth is an efficient and effective way to provide all of your

heating and hot water requirements, all year round.

At One Planets Consultants, we have the design expertise to specify the most suitable Ground

Source Heat Pump to achieve the best performance and best value solution for each project.

The designed system will allow GSHP's to provide a total heating and hot water solution, they

are very efficient systems and will provide a constant comfortable temperature in your home.

GSHP's do require some electricity to run but typically generate up to four times as much heat

energy as they consume providing a Co-efficient of Performance (COP} of 4:1, sometimes even

higher. GSHP's use a series of buried pipes commonly known as the

'Ground Loop' to circulate a mix of water and glycol which collects the stored solar

energy from the earth and moves it to your building.

FUNDING FOR GSHP's

Horizontal Ground Loop. The simplest option;

with the pipe buried at lm, laid straight or in a

'slinky' coil to reduce the length of the trench.

Borehole or Vertical Ground Loop. Where

there is limited space, vertical loops can be

inserted or bore holes can be drilled to

accommodate the required ground loop.

Qualifying systems can claim the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI, this Government scheme

started in 2014 rewards adopters of renewable heating technologies such as GSHP's. Switching

to a Ground Source Heat Pump saves energy and helps the UK reduce its carbon emissions and

meets its renewable energy targets.

Unlike gas and oil boilers which burn fossil fuels to produce heat, ASHP's deliver heat at lower temperatures. During the winter, they may need to be on constantly to heat your home efficiently.

You will also notice that radiators won't feel as hot to the touch as they might do when you are using a gas or oil boiler - this is normal.

PRODUCTS OPC Under Floor Heating (UFH)

ONE PLANETS CONSULTANTS LTD

With a water-based UFH system, a series of pipes connected to your heating source

circulate warm water throughout the floor to heat the space. Typically, you can connect the

UFH pipes to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) or Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP). UFH

works by connecting pipes laid under the floor to a manifold and then to your heating

system. It can also be fitted to a thermostat or zone controls so that you can regulate the

temperature.

UFH is typically more energy efficient than radiators

and therefore less expensive to run. This is because the

heat emitted from an UFH system is more evenly

distributed compared to a single radiator, and so the

system can operate at a lower water temperature.

Underfloor heating is mainly used in solid floors but

using a plate system can be installed on suspended

floors.

The floor should be properly prepared and insulated

to make the system work efficiently. There needs to

be enough space to accommodate the pipework so

you might have to elevate the floor level, especially if

it's being retrofitted in a room that already exists.

Because of this, it's easier to install UFH in a new

build as these adjustments can be taken into

consideration from the start.

• Get paid for the electricity you generate. The UK government's Feed-in Tariff schemecomprises of the 'Generation Tariff' & 'Export Tariff'.

• The 'Generation Tariff' - At the current generation tariff rate you will be paid for 100% ofthe electricity that your system generates.

• The 'Export Tariff' - Your electricity provider will also pay you a deemed amount at thecurrent export tariff rate, the deemed quantity is 50% of your total generation, this isbecause they assume that is approximately what a typical household will not use and whatwill be exported back into the grid. This 50% is paid even is you use ALL of the electricityyou generate. Battery storage can become a significant benefit because of this assumption.

• Cut your carbon footprint. Solar electricity is green renewable energy and doesn't releaseany harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. A typical 4kW Solar PV system could savenearly two tonnes of carbon per year.
