College Profile

Govt. Degree College Udhampur was set up in 1961 as a three year degree course in Science & Arts with a pre – university class attached to it. The first batch of 30 students was admitted on 27 June, 1961 and interestingly no. of girls (17) was more than no. of boys (13). The majestic campus of this decades’ old college is situated in the outskirts of Udhampur town on a hillock overlooking the Devika, the sacred Ganges of Jammu region. Since its inception the college has achieved major landmarks, and is at present one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. At present, the College provides instruction in the disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Science (Medical and Non-medical), BCA and BBA. We also offer two Post Graduate Courses i.e. Post Graduate course in English & Post Graduate course in Hindi. A sizable section of students joining this institution comes from such families which mainly depend on agriculture and are economically as well as socially weak. The College carefully caters to the educational needs of this particular section of the society, and puts in every effort to ensure a gradual and meaningful development of the students, both in curricular and extra-curricular domains. The College has a highly qualified and experienced staff, well-equipped laboratories, rich library, play-fields, Boys’ hostel, Multi-purpose hall and other infrastructural facilities. Besides, the lush green splendid campus of the College and equipped with all basic amenities and (with a back drop of the Gangeda Hills) provides ample reasons of attraction and a conducive environment of optimum learning to the students. Introduction to the session 2008-09

The session under consideration remained an unstable one as the Dr. A.S Rishi superannuated and Dr. Kiran Bakshi , Principal Govt. College for Women Udhampur was given additional charge of this College. She was succeeded by Dr. Ashok Kumar Manwati, a renowned scholar in the field of Mathematics. However, the teaching –learning activities of the College were conducted very well.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution. • Symposium on “Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s Crusade for Education” on 6th Nov.

2008.Rabia Khanam of MA III stood first, Neha Sharma of B.Sc Second & Seema Chib of B.Com III got the third prize.

• Symposium on “Disaster Management Community Awareness, Mitigation & Preparedness” organized on 18th Nov, 2008.Bhumika Abrol, Simmi Chib, Shivani Bhat got 1st ,2nd &3rd respectively whereas Sneha & Vineet Gupta were given consolation prizes.

• Celebrated the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of Lt. Sh. Rajiv Gandhi. A symposium was held on the topic “Renewable Energy: Uses and Benefits” in which the students as well as the staff of the college participated.

• A total of 20 NCC cadets (13 Boys & 7 Girls) from various colleges & schools represented J & K Directorate in NIC at Amravathi Nagar (T.N.) w.e.f. January 5th to 16th, 2009 under the command of Lt. Kamal Kishore, NCC Officer of the College.

• A total of 06 NCC cadets of this College participated in National Integration camp at Nagrota, Jammu w.e.f. 3rd of October to 15th of October, 2009.

• This College and Department of Information Udhampur jointly organized a “Multi-lingual Mushaira” in the college campus in which around 26 noted and budding poets from the fields of Hindi, Urdu and Dogri Literature participated

• 30 November,2009 : Three-day NSS workshop included symposium on National Integration , cleanliness Campaign & culminated with a blood donation camp in which volunteers/staff donated blood.

• The College Principal, Staff & Students, students including NCC Cadets & NSS Volunteers took pledge to work with dedication to preserve and strengthening freedom and integrity of the Nation in connection with National Integration Day on the birth anniversary of Veteran Leader & Ex-Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi.

• An awareness lecture about the H1N1 Swine Flu virus .

• On 15th August 2008 - NSS volunteers sold 500 flags hand-crafted by mentally challenged young adults of Hi-tech Family Enrichment Foundation.

• NCC Cadets visited Orphange (Bal Ashram) on 20th of November, 2008 in connection with NCC Day celebration.

With the object of effective and efficient handling of examination work, like every year ,Examination Committee was constituted to conduct the exams. The examination committee took various measures to ensure a transparent conduct of internal and external examination. The entire conduct of examinations, regular as well as private, throughout the session was made centralized. The College staff was also deputed to other Govt./private institutions as Flying Squad. The teachers were appointed as paper setters, moderators,Evaluaters/re-evaluaters in theory and practical examinations .
