DISTRICT 1A MOURNS - LION GEORG TOFT PASSED AWAY!
A TRIBUTE TO PCC GEORG TOFT:
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CHICAGO MAYFAIR LION PCC
GEORG TOFT He always said he was born at a very early
age and never overcame it. He was an excellent
photographer as the pictures hanging in his home will
attest. He was a communicator, a writer, a speech giver,
a program creator, a Lions historian without peer, a
rememberer of facts and trivia, a reader of mysteries, a
lover of the Wizard of Oz, Tosca, Aida, Cats and quiet
jazz, could still jitterbug, had the soul of an artist and
absolutely loves Fannie May Nougats – dark chocolate
mostly. Lion Georg was married to Lion Judy for 51-1/2
years - a father of three children, Lion Doug, Colleen
and Amy but - most of all - in every fiber of his being -
he was a Lion! He like many other young kids living in
the City, went to the local grammar school, the Homer
School, and went on to attend Lane Technical High
School. Although it may be hard to imagine now, in his
early days, he was a speed skater and entered local
competitions and even took a turn at jumping barrels.
He did spend some time doing local auto racing but his
first love was photography. He went on to enlist in the
Army and spent a good portion of his time at Ft Knox,
Kentucky. After his service time, he came back to his
first love and eventually opened a small photography
studio on Elston Avenue and found a Lions Club to join.
Thus, the rest of his life had been shaped by his being
interested in all facets of photography and being a Lion!
He was invited to membership in the Chicago Mayfair
Lions Club in 1965 and held many club offices, including
President in 1969, 1980 and 1997, the 50th anniversary
of the club and again in 2011. He was awarded a Melvin
Jones Fellow at the 50th anniversary celebration. He
went on to serve District 1-A as Zone Chairperson,
Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer, and Chair of the Finance
Committee, MERL Committee, Leadership, and Long
Range Planning, Extension and Membership
Committees. His involvement on the District level also
included serving on the convention, election, midyear
workshop, circus, golf and bowling committees. He also,
at the request of seven sitting governors, created and
published the Governor’s official newsletter. He went
on to represent the Lions of District 1-A as Governor
and Multiple District 1 Council Chair for the 2003-2004
Lions year - the last person in MD 1 to hold this position
simultaneously - as 2 well as having a positive gain in
membership during his tenure - thanks to the Lions who
were part of his team. He served the State as
Membership Chair for three years, was a presenter at 4
State Conventions and 5 MD1 Forums. He has
presented programs on Roberts Rules, Dr. IQ, History of
Lionism, various new member orientation programs, co-
wrote the Membership Shuffle performed at District
and State conventions and presented programs to
seven different Lions Clubs in Iceland. On the
International level, he has served on 7 International
Parades and Sgt at Arms committees and in 2003 was
selected to serve as the 2007 International Convention
Parade Chairman held in Chicago, Illinois and as such,
set up the logistics of moving the over 12,000 people
marching in the International parade. He had been
awarded the District Cabinet Lion of the Year, 2
Extension Awards, 3 International Presidents
Certificates and 3 Membership Keys and in 2003
International President Tae-Sup Lee personally
presented him with the President’s Medal, the 2nd
highest award that can be given to a Lion. His Lionistic
activities were wide and varied. He was a board
member of the Strickfaden Committee at the Chicago
Light House for the Blind. He was Chair of the ERIC
Committee for the Lions of Illinois Research Institute
charged with raising one million dollars from Lions to
add additional research floors on the research institute.
He truly understood the accomplishments of the Lions
of Illinois Research Institute as one day in September,
2010; he woke up and found his vision to be impaired.
As a professional photographer, not to have the use of
your eyes can be an earth shattering point in your life as
not being able to create a new world through the lens
of his camera could have been devastating. Instead, he
immediately made an appointment with the doctors at
the Lions of Illinois Research Institute and asked for
their help – which was immediate. It was discovered he
had suffered a bleeding blood vessel and developed
Wet Eye Macular Degeneration. As a result he became
part of a trial program with a drug which if proved
successful, could help many with his problem, creating a
time release program that could perhaps cut down on
the frequency of the monthly shots endured by so
many. After the initial treatments, he found he was the
“first in the world” to receive this type of treatment for
his condition at his age. His eye sight dramatically
improved and he and his family were fully aware of the
gift he was given – to get his sight back and again 3 use
his camera as his third “eye on the world.” He knew and
understood that because of the Lions who worked so
hard to build the research facility years ago, he had a
place to turn in his time of need. His eye continued to
improve and along with monthly checkups and shots in
his eye, his vision was holding its own. After these two
difficult years, he truly knew what it means to be a Lion
and be a part of an organization that is constantly
reaching out its hand saying “we serve.” In November
2010, he and his wife were presented with the
“President’s Volunteer Service Award” presented by the
President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a
letter of congratulations from the White House and
appropriate lapel pen to say thank you for being a
volunteer! He continued to work on the District level as
the District Magazine Editor. Although the MERLOW
Committee no longer functioned, he was still asked to
do presentations on Lionism to various clubs around the
District. Additionally, he continued to be a part of the
MD1 State Constitution and Bylaws Committee offering
recommendations on updating the MD1 Constitution
and By Laws to conform to the rules of Lions Clubs
International. His work on a District Level shifted into
being on the 501c3 Committee, helping to shape the
future of the District as a 501c3 entity. This has been a
long and arduous undertaking but the series of
meetings culminated into the filing of all documentation
to bring this idea to life. Lion Georg understood that to
be a member of a worldwide organization such as Lions
clubs International, you have to understand your
commitment of time to others, time away from your
home and family, time spent in meetings, time to raise
funds, time to do community service and time to be
involved with the family of man! He knew and
understood the importance of “his time” as a Lion. In
the 2011-2012 year, the Chicago Mayfair Lions Club
proudly presented their candidate for Lion of the year,
District 1A, Lions Clubs International - Lion Georg G. Toft
– who was a special husband, father, and a Lions Lion!
On December 2, 2015, at 6:20 a.m., at the age of 79,
Lion Georg Toft, a 46 year member of the Chicago
Mayfair Lions Club, was “called home” to Valhalla!
GOVERNOR RALPH ZARADA SPEAKS:
Fellow Lions
I hope your Thanksgiving
holiday was filled with joy and family fellowship – and of course lots of turkey with all the trimmings.
We have ended the first
quarter of the 2015-2016 Leadership year and I am
happy to report that we are continuing to grow our
District. Here are the numbers:
We brought in 90 new members, reinstated nine Lions,
and four Lions transferred to different clubs. We lost 58
members, but still had a positive gain of 45 members,
bringing the membership total at the end of October to
1,863. The Illinois College of Optometry LEO Club will be
expanding its membership by 50 new members on
December 15th and the new club in Broadview is
getting close to the 20 member charter floor. We need
to continue this pattern in order to keep our district
vital and moving forward.
In the past few months we had some great news from
around our district that I would like to share with you.
On November 22 the official charter of the
Chicago Ridge Lions Club was held at the Oak
Lawn Elks club. During the Charter Night
ceremony, 30 of the 36 charter members were
inducted and the new Club Officers were sworn
into their positions. The members present then
signed their names to the Charter document.
International and District dignitaries attended
the celebration, including Lion Bob Corlew, First
Vice President of Lions Clubs International, Lion
Dan O'Reilly (PID), Lion Steve Anton (State
Council Chair), and several Past District
Governors. There was also a large audience of
Lions from surrounding Clubs, including Oak
Lawn, Burbank, Worth, and Orland Park. Later
this month, the club will be adding another 16
members to their roster, bringing the total
number of new Lions to 52 and making the
Chicago Ridge Lions Club the fifth largest club in
District 1A!
LCI selected District 1A to lead a pilot project
with VSP to distribute eyeglass gift certificates
to needy adults and children. We were given
500 certificates—330 are for all ages and 170
are for children only. If there is a need for
eyeglasses in your service area or if you are
having a health fair or a school health screening
please contact Lion Mike Smigelski
([email protected]) for details about the
program and how you can help someone who
needs eyeglasses.
I received 10 peace posters for consideration
for the District Peace Poster contest. The
posters have been snapshot and recorded for
judging by select Cabinet members. The
deadline for voting by these judges was
November 29. The winning poster will be
District 1A’s Peace Poster submission to the
State. I want to give a big shout out to the
following clubs for their service work to the
community over the past months.
Chicago Filipino American Lions Pearle Vision 5K
to support the Lions of Illinois Foundation in
bringing vision awareness to the communities
Chicago Ridge Lions "One Can Make a
Difference" Food Drive
Cook County Lions Veterans Service Day
Franklin Park Manila Lions Annual Thanksgiving
Dinner for senior and needy citizens
Puerto Rico Lions Feed the Children in
Humboldt Park
River Grove Lions Humanitarian Night for the
Farnsworth School for the visually impaired
To all the clubs who came out and helped with
the MedFest Special Olympics Opening Eyes
event at the United Center
And to all the clubs who rendered service work
to their communities
Service work is what sustains and motivates all of us
in working together in our mission of "We Serve" to
make a difference in our communities and around
the world.

Editorial:
What a Start!
December is just begun; and we heard a very sad news for District 1A as we heard from PCST Judy – passing away of her beloved husband – PCC
Georg Toft on December 2, 2015.
Entire District 1A was shocked to hear this sad news, even though many of us knew his serious illness. Many shed tears in their eyes, many sent messages through facebook.
He was a leader not only in 1A or MD1, he was known all over in Lions World. His vision, his ideas, his thoughts, his strength and his photography got impressed by many and he won the hearts of thousands. He was
very brilliant and always giving advice to his friends to do the right thing.
As a parliamentarian, he knew every rule from the book “Roberts Rules” and was reminding us during meetings whenever one slips aside from this. His strength in narrating Lions History by remembering events which made Lionism great will be missed due to his loss. He was the master mind for orientation and lions’ history.
As I worked with him closely as his Vice District Governor when he was District Governor and simultaneously he became the Council Chairman for MD1, Terry and I became thick friends with Lions Georg and Judy. He is used to call me ‘Son’ and I was calling him ‘Dad’ even though age difference between us was only 14 years. I respected him as a mentor, guide and best friend. He was my hero in the world of Lionism and was a ‘Think Tank’ for Lionism.
As a District Governor, he started 5 new clubs and when I became Governor, he asked me to take the challenge and bring 5 more and I did it. His inspiration, courage and wisdom to make others successful were one of the gems on his decorated hat in Lionism.
I will be missing him in my life;
his guidance,
his vision and his mission will be missed by many.
When laid foundation to start VOICES, he committed himself 100% for the success. He worked day and night to get approval from State, Attorney General and IRS to become 501 (C3) institutions. He wrote the constitution and by-laws and received approval from Lions Clubs International. His first dream project for VOICES – KID SIGHT he introduced just before completing his first term as its first President of VOICES.
What a leader he was! What a visionary and missionary for Lionism he was!! To remember Lion Georg, District 1A should name a project on his name so that he can smile from heaven and send his blessings to us to follow his footsteps.
May his departed soul rest in peace and many God Almighty grant PCS Judy Toft, Lion Doug, Colleen and Amy and their loved ones enough strength to bear this loss, Amen.
-Lion Austin D’Souza, Ph.D., Editor
Fellow Lions,
It has finally happened. After a yearlong procedure to secure the funding and with the help of a matching grant from Lions Clubs International, V.O.I.C.E.S. has purchased four (4) plusoptix cameras that will enable us to
screen the vision of children from six (6) months to six (6) years of age. Several clubs throughout our district and several Lions have generously donated towards the purchase of the cameras. Now only one more step to go. This month the members of V.O.I.C.E.S. will be training in the operation and care of the cameras. With this in mind we are set to kick off the Kids Sight program in our District. If your club wants to have someone from the V.O.I.C.E.S. committee come out and speak about the process or perhaps at your Region Meeting please contact me to set up a date for us to come out and visit. Should your club want to set up a vision screening for children in your area, please contact me and I will help you get started on the process. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the V.O.I.C.E.S Committee, -CC Steve, V.O.I.C.E.S. President
Chicago Ridge Lions Club with 50 newly chartered members. I said, “Wow” as in recent years we never had an opportunity to charter a huge new Lions Club. Under the leadership of Past International Director Dan O’Reilly and PDG Harold Burkett, Jr., this took place in Chicago Ridge. Kudos to these leaders and also all the new members of Chicago Ridge Lions Club and their
hard working office bearers. New Club’s Guiding
Lions are Lions Frank Kirar and PDG John Coleman and the sponsoring club is Oak Lawn Lions Club. Below is the acceptance speech by Chicago Ridge Lions Club’s Charter President Bill Lammel:
International Vice President Bob Corlew, District Governor Ralph Zarada, honored guests, and visiting lions, it is my distinct honor as president of Chicago Ridge Lions Club, to accept
this Charter on behalf of my fellow lions. I would like to express our gratitude upon officially becoming members of Lions Clubs International, the World’s largest humanitarian service organization.
We are honored and enthusiastic to be part of the greater Lions family and eager to start our mission, to provide service to local and world communities. We fully accept our responsibilities to our club, the association and most importantly, the citizens of Chicago Ridge. We will proudly use the motto, “We Serve” as we work in the community and strive to help where there is a need.
We are anxiously to work closely with our fellow club members, empower people, are recruit others to meet our service initiative. We look forward to meeting our clubs challenges with a spirit of fellowship, the camaraderie of teamwork and civic pride that we will gain together with our membership in the Chicago Ridge Lions Club.
As president of the Chicago Ridge Lions Club I openly and humbly accept their responsibilities of my office. In doing so, I pledge to you, the members of the Chicago Ridge Lions Club, my full cooperation, as well as that of my fellow club officers. We also will continue to spread our spirit of fellowship, as well as our motto, “We Serve” to all facets of the Chicago Ridge community and as ambassadors beyond. In turn, we ask for your time, your treasure or your talents in support of
our club initiatives and most importantly our meetings, where we share diverse ideas, plot our club course and grow collectively. Together we can do so much good for those in need, bring our community closer together, and show the world who we are.
It was once said, “A journey starts with a simple step.” So, I call upon you, Chicago Ridge Lions, this party is our first step, let us go forth and be a Progressive Unifying Force. Let us show every face we meet and every head we turn as Lions….. We Serve, Thank You.
Duffels for
Dignity
Spouses’
Project
I thought I would give you an update on this project. First of all, for those of you who are
not familiar with this project, let me give you a brief description. The Spouses of the Council of Governors 2015-16 have banded together to lead a service project that will provide wheeled duffel bags for foster children to various agencies in the state. These foster children move from location to location with their meager belongings in a black garbage bag. The group’s goal was to provide 50 duffel bags to an organization during the 2015-16 Lions year. The first presentation will be at the December 5th Council meeting to the Lutheran Agency, which is located in District CS.
The group came up with a title “Duffels for Dignity” and then they determined we needed a logo, which is shown at the beginning of this article. After the logo was created, everyone thought, we need a luggage tag and the next thing I knew, we had luggage tags. I would like to thank two people for their help on this part of the project. Lion Rich Polanek our designer who donated his services and PCST Dawn Grogan for having the luggage tags donated by her company.
(Some spouses of current council at the MD1 Mid Year Leadership Forum in East Peoria Duffels for Dignity Table below:)
But funding the project became our priority. Many of the funds were personal donations from the spouses.
As the energy and excitement continued to grow within the group, another idea was discussed…selling Christmas cards (which were designed for our group). They were first available at the 1-M Convention and at the MD-1 Forum. We are almost sold out of Christmas cards. But will have greeting cards for all occasions very soon. Please contact Lion Pam Fowler from District 1-J or any of the Spouses, if you are interested in Christmas cards. The cards will be available at the December 5th Council Meeting.
I would like to thank those of you that have made personal donations; they are so very much appreciated. In addition, I had the opportunity to attend the PDG dinner/meeting which is held every year on Saturday night after the MD-1 Forum. PDG Tom Senger asked me to talk about the “Duffels for Dignity Project” afterwards the PDG’s voted to donate $500.00 to the project, which will provide us with an additional 25 duffels bags for the foster children. We can’t thank them and everyone else enough for their donations.
Our goal now is to present duffel bags at the February Council Meeting and at the State Convention.
Stay tuned for more information on this project in the state newsletter and also your district newsletters as this project moves along.
Need more information about this project? Feel free to contact any of the Spouses or myself to answer any questions you may have.

MD1 Host Committee
In one year and seven months, the Lions Clubs International Centennial Convention will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago starting on Friday, June 28 and running through Tuesday, July 4, 2017. The International Parade will be Saturday, July 1, 2017 and is scheduled to march down State Street from Lake Street south to Congress Parkway.
The MD-1 Host Committee has been working on the convention activities, but more importantly working to raise the necessary money that is needed to support those activities. For the most part, the Lions have been supported in the purchase of the two Commemorative Pins and the MD1 Vest that reflects the pride of our Lions. Unfortunately, the area of individual Club and District donations has been well below our projections.
The third pin in the set of three will be available this spring. Between Pins #1 and #2, there has been more that 5,500 pins purchased. The committee is looking to produce and sell a limited number of “Shadow Boxes” that will contain the three pins, and also have two additional pins. This project is
still being developed and will hopefully to be available by the State Convention in May, 2016.
There are polo shirts and baseball caps available for sale with the committee logo proudly shown on it. They will be available at all the sub district convention and the State Convention. This is only the start of some of the merchandise that will be available to commemorate this celebration. After the first of the year, you will be able to order them on-line.
Please consider making club or district donation. Each level has a different banner patch and over the next couple of years you can earn all three patches. For clubs
that can’t make that size of a donation, then consider joining with a fellow club and work together to earn that patch. For a donation of either $100, $250 or $500 participating club would receive a banner patch for the respective donation. I would like to thank those clubs and districts that have made a donation already. Also, as an individual, you can receive the patch for your vest.
There are a variety of areas that volunteers are needed. The list of areas is located on the flyer. Please look over the list and mark the areas that you are interested in working. The shift time is about 3 hours to the maximum and with enough workers it would not be longer, unless you choose it to be. All volunteers will receive a vest to wear showing the Lions that you are here to assist them. I hope that you would consider to become an active part of the committee.
-Lion Robert Block, PDG 2017 MD-1 Host Committee, Chairman
FACTS ABOUT VP BOB:
Hails from Milton, TN, which is an unincorporated community. Married to Lion Dianne. Both of them are Progressive Melvin Jones Fellows. VP Bob is a member of the Murfreesboro Lions Club and has been since 1978. Has also been active in the
Boy Scouts of America, the Jaycees and the Red Cross. Lions Bob & Dianne have 5 children and 4 grandchildren.
FUN FACTS ABOUT VP BOB:
In 2nd
grade, VP Bob was a Jr. Fire Marshall! He wore a little badge and insisted on going to school early each morning to inspect to be sure there were no fires overnight
As a child, Bob had a pet Collie. Not being too original on names back then, he named his dog….. “Collie”!
He was a club organizer, even as a child, starting the
“77 Club” when he was in 2nd
grade! It was named 77
because you should be 7 years old in 2nd
grade, but it probably had more to do with the fact that 77 Sunset Strip was a popular TV show at the time!
VP Bob learned to drive at an early age (driving farm trucks and tractors off road). He had his first wreck at 8 years old!
His favorite vehicle to drive when he’s at home is his 1995 Ford F-150 Pick-up. It has 265,000 miles on it, and gets really good gas mileage! He filled it up right after Christmas in 2014, and it still has a half a tank today
People are waiting to join Lions Clubs! Let us invite them to our meetings and get them involved in our activities to feel lionism in their hearts.

Does Your Club Take Active Part?
-PDG Austin D’Souza, 1A Centennial Service Challenge Chairperson
How many clubs in our district are reporting their monthly activities on MyLCI? Very few and it is shame to us. We in District conduct so many activities in our communities and these activities are not reported on MyLCI. As a part centennial celebration, we promised to serve 100 million people worldwide. I am very positive that we can do this and all our activities adds up when we report our service activities on MyLCI.
