Governor Pence announces new agencyOnAugust23,GovernorMikePenceannouncedthecreationoftheCenterforEducationandCareerInnovation(CECI).JoinedbySpecialAssistantforCareerInnovationJaclynDowdandSpecialAssistantforEducationInnovationClaireFiddian-Green,theGovernorsignedExecutiveOrder13-21toestablishthenewagency.
CECIimprovescollaborationamongIndiana’spublic,privateandnon-profiteducationandworkforcepartnersbyaligningeducationandcareerandworkforcetrainingefforts.Thecenterfocusesonstudents,clientsandresultsandworktoensureIndianaisprovidingqualityeducationforchildrenandpreparingadultsfornewcareers.
“IndianahasmadegreatstridesinthelasteightyearswhenitcomestoimprovingeducationandworkforcedevelopmentopportunitiesforHoosiers,butwithunemploymentstubbornlystayingaboveeightpercent,thereisstillworktobedone,”saidGovernorPence.“TheCenterforEducationandCareerInnovationwillstrivetoimprovecoordinationbetweenpertinentagencypartnersandindustryvoicestoensureaworld-classeducationforstudentsandtobetterprepareadultstobesuccessfulintheirchosencareerpathwaythatalsomeetsindustrydemands.Bycreating

Governor Pence names Dwayne Sawyer new State Auditor Governor appointments
OnAugust15,GovernorMikePenceannouncedDwayneSawyerasAuditorofStateforIndiana.HecompletesformerAuditorTimBerry’sterm,whichrunsthrough2014.“Dwayne’sprofessionalbackground,experienceinpublicservice,strongcharacter,andinvolvementwiththeRepublicanPartymakehimthebestchoicetoserveasAuditorforthepeopleofIndiana,”saidGovernorPence.“Iamhonoredtoappointhim,andIknowDwayneSawyerwillserveallthepeopleofIndianawithprofessionalismandintegrityasournewAuditor.”TheAuditoroftheStatehasfourprimaryduties:accountingforallofthestate’sfunds;overseeinganddisbursingcounty,city,townandschooltaxdistributions;payingthestate’sbills;andpayingthestate’semployees.
Sawyerbringsexperienceinfinancialsystems,informationtechnologyandprojectmanagementtothisposition.
HemostrecentlyworkedinsoftwaredevelopmentforPositron.SawyeralsoworkedonfinancialmanagementsolutionswhileemployedbyRocheDiagnostics,DowAgroSciencesandEliLillyandCompany.
Sawyerhasservedwithdistinctioninlocalgovernment.ElectedtotheBrownsburgTownCouncilin2009,Sawyerbecamepresidentofthecouncilin2012.Astowncouncilpresident,Sawyerledhiscommunitythroughaperiodofunprecedentedgrowthwhilemanagingabudgetinexcessof$40million.Activeinlocalpoliticssince2005,SawyeralsoservesastheSecretaryofthe4thDistrictRepublicanCommittee.HeisamemberoftheExecutiveCommitteeoftheHendricksCountyRepublicanPartyandservesontheBoardofDirectorsoftheIndianaLeadershipForumandisa2009

AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControl,childhoodobesityhasmorethandoubledinchildrenandtripledinadolescentsinthepast30years.In2010,morethanonethirdofchildrenandadolescentswereoverweightorobese.Thisisthefirstgenerationofchildrenthatarepredictedtohaveshorterlifespansthantheirparents.Overweightandobesechildrenaremorelikelytobeobeseadults,placingthematriskforadulthealthproblemssuchasheartdisease,type2diabetes,strokeandseveraltypesofcancer.Theyarealsomorelikelytohavestress,depressionandlowself-esteem.
Sohowdidwegethere?Thirtyyearsago,mostpeopleledactivelifestylesthathelpedkeepthematahealthyweight.Kidswalkedtoandfromschooleveryday,ranaroundatrecess,participatedingymclassandplayedforhoursafterschool.Mealswerehome-cookedwithreasonableportionsizesandavegetablewasalwaysincludedontheplate.Eatingfastfoodwasrareandsnackingbetweenmealswasanoccasionaltreat.
Today,childrenexperienceaverydifferentlifestyle.Theactivelifestyleofwalkingtoandfromschoolhasbeenreplacedbycarandbusrides.Gymclass,recessandafter-schoolsportsprogramshavebeencut.AfternoonsarenowspentinasedentarystatewithTV,videogamesandtheinternetinfrontofour
children.Parentsarebusierthaneverandfamilieseatfewerhome-cookedmeals.Sothatisthebadnews;butthegoodnewsisthathealthy
lifestylehabits,suchashealthyeatingandphysicalactivity,canlowertheriskofbecomingobeseanddevelopingobesity-relateddiseases.
Thereareavarietyofthingswecandoasparents,caregiversandcommunitymemberstoimprovethehealthofourchildren.Parentsplayakeyroleinmakinghealthychoicesandshapinglifelonghealthyhabits.Kidslearnabouthealthyeatingfromtheirfamilyandfromwhatisservedathomeformealsandsnacktime.Visitmyplate.govandkidseatright.orgforgreatresourcesforrecipesandinformationonhealthymealplanning.

SecretaryofStateConnie Lawsonisinvitingallstateemployeestoparticipateinthe2013WalktoEndLupusNow—afun-filleddayofactivities,foodandfitness—onOctober12,2013.SecretaryLawsonhasteamedupwiththeLupusFoundationasthehonorarychairpersonforthiseventwhichwillhelpraisemoneyforLupusresearchandhelpspreadthewordaboutthisdebilitatingdiseaseaboutwhichlittleisknown.

South Split Project update: City prepares for 59-day I-65/I-70 closure

TheSouthSplitprojectbeginstodaySept.3,andINDOTistakingmeasurestominimizethelengthoftheclosureofthisbusyhighway.
TheSouthSplitprojectclosesI-65andI-70betweenthenorthandsouthsplits,ontheeastsideofdowntownIndianapolis,for59daysstartingtodaytoreconstructandlowerpavementbeneathsevenbridges.Theacceleratedprojectisnecessarytoincreasebridgeclearancesbecauseunpermittedandoff-routetruckswithoversizeloadshaverepeatedlystruckthesebridges.
ThestretchofI-65/I-70tobeclosedisusedbyapproximately100,000vehiclesonanaverageday.StateCentralOfficeworkersandthoseINDOTworkerscomingtoCentralOfficeshouldplantoallowextratimefortheircommutes.Additionally,vendorsandpartnerswhoareinvitedtomeetingsattheIndianaGovernmentCentershouldberemindedtoallowextratimefortheircommute.
Theprojecthasgeneratedlocal,stateandnationwidenewsbecauseofthefrequencyandseverityofthebridgestrikes–asshownonvideofromINDOTandJointTransportationResearchProgramcameras.ThankstoaninnovativeINDOTbiddingtechnique,whichrequiredcontractorstocompeteoverconstructioncostandclosuredays,theSouthSplitisclosedonly59daysinsteadoftheexpectedclosureof90days.INDOTisoffering$60,000perdaytothecontractortomeetorbeatits59-dayschedule.

Health alert
StatehealthofficialshaveconfirmedacaseofmeaslesinanindividualinMonroeCounty.Theindividual,whowasnotvaccinated,becameinfectedwithmeasleswhileoverseas.TheIndianaStateDepartmentofHealthandlocalhealthdepartmentsareworkingtopreventfurthertransmissionofthediseasebyidentifyingindividualswhomayhavebeenexposedaswellaspotentialadditionalcases.TheindividualvisitedtheIndianapolisInternationalAirportonAug.22,whileinfectious.Thosewhovisitedtheairportthatdayanddevelopsymptomsofmeasles,suchasrash,fever,cough,runnynose,andredeyes,shouldstayhomeandcalltheirhealthcareprovider.SecondarycaseswouldbeginexperiencingsymptomsfromAug.24throughSept.12.Healthcareprovidersshouldconsidermeaslesinpatientswithrashandfever,particularlyifthepatientisunvaccinated,andvisitedtheIndianapolisInternationalAirportonAug.22,orhasahistoryoftraveltoTexas(whereameaslesoutbreakiscurrentlyoccurring),internationaltravel,orcontactwithinternationalvisitorsorsymptomaticcases.Healthcareprovidersareencouragedtoaskthesepatientsiftheyhavebeenvaccinatedagainstmeasles.
