1 Governor Brown Signs Bill Giving California Tenants More Time To Fight Evictions California tenants will have more time to pay rent or respond to notices to pay rent and eviction lawsuits, according to a bill Governor Jerry Brown signed into law earlier this month. Current State law maintains that tenants have three days to comply with lease terms or pay rent, and five days to respond to eviction proceedings. The new law changes calendar days to court days thereby excluding Saturdays and Sundays and other judicial holidays from the respondent’s timeline. This could add anywhere from two to three days to the tenant’s response time to the subject process. As rents continue to rise across California, proponents see the easing of eviction law as a “necessity”. The new legislation reflects the view of the CA State Assembly and Senate: i.e. enact further forms of “tenant protections” while doing little to facilitate the construction of new affordable housing. This new law will become effective on September 1, 2019. For more information regarding this bill, click here.

Governor Brown Signs Bill Giving California Tenants More Time To Fight Evictions

California tenants will have more time to pay rent or respond to notices to pay rent and eviction lawsuits, according to a bill Governor Jerry Brown signed into law earlier this month.

Current State law maintains that tenants have three days to comply with lease terms or pay rent, and five days to respond to eviction proceedings. The new law changes calendar days to court days — thereby excluding Saturdays and Sundays and other judicial holidays from the respondent’s timeline.
