School History, Infrastructure, Academic Status and Challenges: School History:

Govt. Senior Secondary School Katrain is situated on the Kullu-Manali National Highway about 20 km from Kullu. It was established as a primary school in the year 1904 on a piece of land donated by a local resident Sh. Gaddu Mal Upadhyaye. The school was upgraded as a Middle school in 1919, as an Anglo-Middle in 1921 and as a High school in 1955. It became centre for Middle and Matriculations Board’s annual Examinations in 1970. It was further upgraded as a Senior Secondary School under new education policy in the year 1986 with another piece of land donated by Luder Sarai Trust of Bajaura. The devastating floods of 1995 washed away the huge playground on the bank of river Beas causing great shortage of land for sports activities. In 2000 the alumni of this school formed Old Students Association. The OSA purchased and donated a piece of land measuring 2.5 bigha on the historical occasion of centenary celebration of school expanding the campus for construction of Science block and toilets and also for school games.

Ever since its inception, the school has been catering to the educational needs of a vast area. It has honour to produce innumerable human resource to serve the society in different fields of social life. A few gems have brought laurels to this institution by occupying high positions in medical, engineering, military, political and social fields.

Presently, the school has excellent infra-structure to accommodate its strength of nearly eight hundred fifty students. Adequate class rooms, huge library hall,Science Block with well furnished laboratories,ICT lab ,Smart Class rooms and desk facilities for all the students make this school an ideal institution for pursuance of modern education. The compact campus of school facilitates the maintenance of discipline which further strengthens the teaching- learning ambience.

The committed, experienced and dedicated staff of 31 teachers and 6 non-teaching staff are determined to lead the students to great heights .With the active support of School Management Committee, local Panchayat and Old Students Association the school administration hopes to provide the best atmosphere for teaching and learning.

Challenges ACADEMIC 1. Need for Improving Annual Exam Results: 71% of the students were successful in annual examinations in academic session 2012-13, wheres 24% students failed and 5% students were placed under compartment. Thus, it is a chellenge to make 30% students able to pass examinations.

2. Unsatisfactory results in terms of quality: However, the results are not bad in quantity, but these are unsatisfactory in terms of quality. The Table-6 above shows that only 18% students have earned first division whereas 25% have passed in second division. Only 3% have scored 75% or more. 3. The students are weak in Mathematics and Science: The overall result of 10th class in 2012-13 session was affected due to the poor performance of students in Mathematics and Science. Only 50% students in Mathematics and 60% in Science could get pass marks in this examination. The issue has been discussed in the meetings of SMC members many times and the steps for improvement were decided in meetings with the concened teachers. Teachers for these subjects were arranged for taking extra classes of all the students of matriculation during vacations in January 2013. The efforts turned fruitless because of the indifference attitude and irregular attendance of the poor students.

Page 18: Government Senior Secondary School Katrain Distt. … · Government Senior Secondary School Katrain Distt. Kullu ... and desk facilities for all the ... volleyball kho-kho and kabaddi

17

4. Absence of concrete steps for improvement of weak students: In spite of the poor performance of the students becoming known after every monthly or terminal test, no concrete remedies were carried out for enhancement in their performance.

5. Irregularity in students’ attendance: The attendance of the students is recorded and displayed on the boards every day. All the absentees are traced out and daily counseling sessions are held with such students. In spite of these efforts, the average weekly attendance remains between 85% to 90%. About 15% students are irregular in attendance. This is the reason for their poor academic performance. 6- Absence of necessary dialogue with the parents: Most of the parents are from remote villages, and are busy in earning their livelihood. They generally are not aware of the importance of quality in education. There is an urgent need to start dialogue with the parents regarding the attendance and bringing about qualitative improvement in their learning

7-Optimum use of ICT: Teaching through the ICT smart classroom has been started from session 2012-13 but this could not be done in an effective manner, as most of the teachers are not able to design and use the support material. 8. Students are poor in knowledge/skills in languages: Most of the students have poor language abilities. This accounts for their poor performance in written examinations mainly in Mathematics and Science. 9. The idea of student centered teaching could not be translated into practice: Inspite of many trainings imparted under SSA and RMSA, most of the teachers are still teaching in conventional way that promotes cramming.

10-Vacant Posts of Teachers: The science teacher in the school has been deputed as BRCC in SSA whereas two posts of teachers remained vacant. The SMC however made temporary arrangements of teachers, but these efforts could not produce desired results. 11. Other vacancies: The posts of Superintendent and Senior Assistant have been running vacant since April 2012 and November 2012 respectively. As a result, the Principal and some other teachers have to clear all the office work that adversely affects the teaching learning activities in the school.
