1st Quarter Events (June – Aug 2012):

Schools re-opened after summer vacation on June 1, 2012, and the following events occurred

during the first quarter:

Teacher Recruitment & Orientation in Salem Postings were advertised in daily newspapers

133 people applied for the posts and 123 were interviewed

37 were shortlisted and out of that, 14 teachers were recruited

The recruitment number was calculated based on the number of expected remedial

students

On July 17, an orientation training about Isha and the GSAP program was held by Mr.

Boopathy, Mr. Palanivelkannan and Mr. Subramaniam

Orientation & Training for Teachers

A two-day training for teachers was conducted in Dharmapuri on June 5th and 6th, with

Shri. Thirunavukarasu CEO (R), an Isha volunteer, as the resource person

Another was held in Coimbatore on June 7th and 8th with Shri. Kaliyappan SSA Co-

ordinator (R) as the resource person.

Topics included: Role of the Teacher, Project Updates, Plans and Overview of ABL & ALM

methodologies

In addition, Shri. Boopathy held sessions on “Conveying messages” and “Learning through

fun games”

Teacher Training on ABL Methodology

On August 24 – 25, Remedial Coaching Training for Tamil and Maths was held for Isha

teachers at Vageeswari Vidhyala Matric Hr. Sec. school in Reddipatti, Salem

12 project teachers from 4 schools participated in the training program

Mr.Ranganathan - RMSA-ADPC, was the resource person and also guided the

organization of the program

The training sessions were supported by:

o 6 Block Resource Training teachers

o 2 Elementary school Practicing teachers

o 2 teachers from Vageeswari Vidhyala Matric Hr. Sec.school in Reddipatti and

their students

The first day of training reviewed Tamil teaching techniques with demonstrations,

inspirational speeches, and motivational video clippings. The training covered the following

topics:

o Teacher’s roles and responsibilities and the importance of a teacher’s job

o How to be with the children/students

o Teaching approach and its techniques - demo with student participation

o Tamil syllabus - ABL card usages, level fixing, letters introducing method, words

creation, reading and writing methods and evaluation

o Targets, action plan with time line

o Preparation of Learning leader and students learning evaluation/achievement chart

o 2 books on Tamil remedial teacher's guide were given by Correspondent of

Vageeshwari Vidhyalaya to all our project teachers.

The second day of training for Maths remedial coaching included the following sessions:

o Mrs.Karthihajothi and Maths teacher - Vageeshwari Vidhyalaya explained how to

introduce shapes, numbers and quantities, zero concepts, and simple addition and

subtraction with self-learning Maths kits. They conducted a demo with the

participation of their class students

o Mr.Ranganathan explained the eight types of hurdles/milestones in teaching Maths

to a student. He showed a motivational film for Maths and also taught:

o CPA (Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach) technique for Maths teaching,

demonstrating the Maths teaching methods with kits and teaching aids

o Place value introduction by 3 ways, Numeric values and simple +,-,x,/ intro

by 7 ways.

o Big/difficult basic calculation methods

o Target and time line

Due to lack of time, it was announced that the Maths session will be completed during a

one day training program to be scheduled in Oct 2012.

The program was concluded by planning the target for the succeeding month, i.e. all

teachers will introduce all Tamil letters and place values, simple addition, subtraction,

multiplication and division in Maths. The progress will be monitored on a weekly basis by

Mr. Subramanium and by the HM of the respective school, and on a monthly basis by Mr.

Boopathy and Mr. Ranganathan.

Remedial Class

Students were assessed based on their reading and writing abilities. Based on the

assessment, the slow learners are separated from regular class and given remedial

coaching. Students for remedial classes have been identified from 6th to 9th Standard for

Tamil and Maths in all three districts as follows:

Spoken English Classes

Spoken English class using Karadi path and Magic English (ME) methodology was

started. Teachers were given one day training. Mrs.Hani, Resource person in ME and

Mr.Anbu ME Trainer for our project conducted the training. 23 teachers in Coimbatore

and 48 teachers in Dharmapuri are trained to conduct the session. In Salem, 13 Isha

teachers and 4 regular teachers were attended the training. The session included

topics on Karadi path and ME methodology, various paths used and mock sessions in

which teachers got opportunity to get practical inputs and clarification.

Baseline assessment on current students’ status in understanding, reading and writing

English language was completed in all the schools. The classes will be started from

Oct 2012.

Phase I of the spoken English classes with a total of 72 sessions, will happen for 6th &

7th standard students. It is scheduled to have 3 sessions in a week in regular school

hours. Class materials were distributed to all the schools.

Yoga programs

Three-day Yoga Classes for 10th standard students were conducted in 12 schools in

Dharmapuri, 11 schools in Coimbatore and four schools in Salem. Similar classes were

conducted for other standards based on the students’ strengths and availability.

Patangasana, Shisupalasana, Surya Namaskar and Isha Kriya were taught.

Yoga classes for teachers were aslso conducted at the Isha Yoga Center in Salem.

Patangasana, Shisupalasana, Surya Namaskar and Isha Kriya were offered in the one-day

program. Project teachers along with regular teachers participated in the class.

Green School Movement

The Greencorp co-ordinator and two students from each school participated in a

training program conducted by Project GreenHands as part of its GreenSchool

Movement. 13 schools out of our 14 adopted schools participated in this training and

received 2000 covers and required seeds to start the nursery.

Healthcare programs

As part of ARR’s 10th year celebration, Health & hygiene awareness camps were

conducted in Coimbatore schools. The same was conducted in our adopted 4 schools

which reached 987 students and 32 teachers

Special events

During the Independence Day celebration, as Isha’s contribution – 66 tree saplings are

distributed and Sadhguru message is given to all 31 schools. Local volunteers

represented Isha in the schools. During the event, our program was recognized and

appreciated. Volunteers took responsibility of regularly visiting the schools and giving

moral support to the students.

Issues & Solutions:

In Coimbatore, remedial classes have been started in 14 schools; they have not been

started in Devarayapuram, Alandurai and Narasipuram schools because of the

unavailability of Isha Teachers. Discussions took place regarding collaborating with

various Teachers from training institutes in Coimbatore.

Celebration
