TOWN MANAGER & BOARD OF SELECTMEN- Several years ago we created the “Power Fund” for folks to donate money to help their neighbors in Gouldsboro with electricity and fuel. Some people do not qualify for state or local programs and need just a bit of help to alleviate disconnection or experience cold homes. If you would like to support the fund please send or bring your donation to the town office. BIG thank you to all of the folks who have donated over the years. Tax bills were mailed August 27th for the new fiscal year. Our mil rate increased from 9.2 to 10.15. At the annual meeting in June voters approved funding reserve accounts and several special projects. We will be paving the first part of Gouldsboro Point Road this year along with multiple culvert replacements and ditching as needed throughout the town. We were also required by the State this past year to build a salt/sand shed on route one. That project was over $350,000. If you would like to review your assessment, feel free to contact the Assessor’s Office at 963-5589.
We are searching for someone to care for our gardens at the town office and other community spaces. There is also an opening to clean the town office a couple hours a week. Please call the town manager at 963-5589 for
additional information.
Special appreciation to Mc’s and Young’s for offering our trash tags at their markets as a service to our community.
It is so helpful for many who cannot get to the town office during business hours.
TOWN CLERK- The first installment of property taxes are due by OCTOBER 31st and the next by MARCH 31st, interest starts accumulating on NOVEMBER 1st and APRIL 1st – There are two coupons on the bill, one for each payment. Bills are sent once a year. Taxes can be paid at any time during the year. If it is easier for you to pay once a month, that works for us, too! We want it to be as easy for you as possible. If you’ve had an address change please be sure to contact the town office so we can make updates and get correspondence to you in a timely manner. Also just a reminder, keep an eye out for a date on the next newsletter of when you can come register your dog for the upcoming year!
**JUST A REMINDER THE TOWN OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED FOR LABOR DAY ON SEPTEMBER 2nd**
GOULDSBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT- It’s that time of year again. The tourists are leaving and the children are going back to school. Remember that the school zone on Main Street will be in affect again 7 – 8AM and 2:30 – 3:30PM Monday through Friday. The speed limit while it is in affect is 15 miles per hour, and the fines for speeding in a school zone are
steep. We will be enforcing the school zone during those times. It is for the safety of the children walking and for the buses going to and from the school. There are also crosswalks in town now, and you are required to yield right of way to anyone in the crosswalk. These are used primarily by students to go to the library and other after school activities. I heard a lot of positive feedback about our school visits last year and we plan to continue with those this year as well. I know the parents and children enjoy seeing us. Be safe -Sergeant Shively

GREETINGS FROM RSU#24- It is hard to believe that the start of the school year is here! We open our doors for our students in kindergarten through grade 9 on Thursday, August 29th and all students (K-12) will be in session on August 30th. Although the summer break is nice to recharge the batteries, the beginning of school is always a fun time of the year, as we welcome students and parents back to school. We have a number of new employees joining the RSU #24 team, including several new administrators. I am pleased to announce that Heather Dorr is the new principal at the Peninsula School, Shannon Forni is the new principal at the Ella Lewis School, and Fredy Lazo will be the new assistant principal at Mountain View. These three have been in the district and are excited to be in their new positions. JT Green will be the new assistant principal at Sumner Memorial High School. Mr. Green joins the RSU team from Maryland and is excited with his move to Maine and to Sumner Memorial High School. We have completed a great deal of work in our facilities as part of our upkeep and improvement. In addition to the annual maintenance and some smaller projects, we have replaced a section of the roof at the Mountain View School and will be doing phone system expansions at Mountain View, Cave Hill, and at the Ella Lewis School. We also will be installing a generator at our District Services Facility. The generator will be done in order to maintain the district-wide services, especially the district technology infrastructure that is housed at our building. With the passing of the referendum to build a new facility to replace Sumner High School, we continue to work closely with our architect to move the project forward. The architects are working on the schematic designs and will be facilitating some required geotechnical work on the proposed building site. Also, as part of the project plan, finalized the purchase of the Daley house, which is located on the east side of Sumner. This purchase is necessary to provide a safe and efficient building campus for the new school. As always, please feel free to check the district website (www.rsu24.org/newbuildingproject/) for updated information regarding the building project and for upcoming Building Committee meeting dates and agendas. Thank you for your continued support of the school district. We feel very fortunate to have a school district that collectively cares for and wants what's best for our students. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns. I can be reached at (207)422-2017 or [email protected]. TRAPS 2 TREASURE- Traps 2 Treasure is open and accepting used and unwanted traps up at our site adjacent to the Gouldsboro Transfer Station. We encourage anyone who wishes to clean up their yard, their wharf or the shore to drop traps off Sundays 12 – 4PM. We have collected or had donated over 500 traps and many are still fishable. We invite fishermen to come have a look. The price for traps ranges from $10-$25. We have a few bricks, toggles, rope, and patching material you may want for repairing traps. Proceeds go to support the programs OceansWide offers students in the Marine Pathways program up at Sumner. For more information on OceansWide and what they are doing for the students in Maine please visit www.oceanswide.org . For info about the Traps 2 Treasure program, please call Becky O’Keefe @ 207-669-2187. BLOOD DONATIONS!- LIVES ARE SAVED thanks to the many blood donors in this community, as well as those who came from Sullivan and Milbridge! The August 14 Red Cross blood drive, honoring Becky Birely, was well supported by all. Thank you to those who came intending to donate, those who were able to donate, the bakers who contributed extra refreshments, the volunteers who greeted, checked donors in, read to children while parents donated, welcomed donors to the refreshment table after donating, and helped tidy up details at the end of the day. Tracy and Bonnie of the Peninsula School deserve special thanks for coordinating use of spotless space and extra signage, especially since the blood drive was not the only function of the day. Thank You Community!
