This Sunday we hear the story of the prodigal son. The hearts of the two sons tell us a great deal about the human heart. The heart can be open or closed, cold or warm, repentant or unrepentant, forgiving or unforgiving, grateful or resentful. The heart of the Father, on the other hand, is constant, it never grows cold, hard or resentful but remains open, warm and forgiving towards both of his sons. The Father shows us what the heart of God is like. God never closes his heart to anyone of us or removes himself from our sufferings, mistakes and problems. He is our Emmanuel - God who is always with us. A God who draws us back to be encircled in his love. One of the things that can help our healing, is to be loved for being just who we are, with all our giftedness and our human weakness. Sanctuary Lamp Special Intention

Sinners and outcasts are at ease with Jesus, and his

story of the prodigal son tells

why. Today’s readings are a source

of hope and consolation for all who have sinned in any way. Our Lord’s eating with sinners is a sign of God breaking through his own laws in order to save those who are in danger of being lost.

Joshua ‘rolls away’ the reproach of Egypt from his suffering people. The ‘Passover’ of the threat of annihilation is celebrated. The bread of life; the manna in the desert

gives way to the possibility of a new dispensation; a new form of bread for the

journey and a new Passover.

St Paul indulges in one or more of his favourite themes and sayings. We who believe are ‘in Christ’ and have been

recreated. We are already a ‘new creation’. Our work is that of

ambassadors. We are to be reconcilers because we have been reconciled.
