    Gods Promse or humanty

HE SON WAS WEARY AND HUNGRY. Eyeing the pods that the pigs enjoyed, his minddrited bak to the past. For a brie seond he suppressed a subtle smile as he remembered theprodigal liestyle o parties and plenty. Hed elt as though he had it all bak then, but now he hadnothing. His unappeased appetite suddenly and merilessly awoke him rom the daydreams obetter days.

Without warning a thought entered his mind, but it was too shameul even to entertain ora seond. How ould he return home ater what he had done? He had let. He had rejeted hisathers love by preerring the passing pleasures that an inheritane ould aord. Surely there was nohomeoming or a disrespetul and disgraed son.

But he was tired o running and going hungry. He resolved to return but with a sel-imposedondition, a sign o his ontrition. He would return no longer a son but a slave.

Te story o the prodigal son is one o the most well-known biblial parables. Imagine the ear theson must have elt as he made his way bak home. consider the inner turmoil and questions thatmust have swirled within. How utterly shoking that the ather would run to meet him and reeivehim bak, not merely as a servant but as his beloved son.

We are the prodigal son. We spend too muh o our lie eating with the pigs when the Fatherstable is set. Beause o the work christ has done on our behal, we an be reoniled to the Fatherand when return to Him, we will nd Him waiting and weloming.

Red the prble o the prodigl son (Luke 15:11-32) nd sk yoursel whihbrother you most resemble. In wht wys? How oten do you spend timesimply onsidering your doption into the mily o God? Wht responsibilitiesome with the truth o our doption?

Because of our adoption inChrist, we are given a new...In this lesson, we will explore the topic oadoption and its privileges. As earthly adoptioninvolves a undamental transer o identity, sowe will fnd that the gospel reality o adoptioninvolves a radical transormation.

How can we tell whether or not we are basing our identity onsomething other than Christ?

In what ways does the picture of adoption help us understand ourrelationship to God? How does the picture of adoption change ourrelationship to one another in the church?

    1. identity (gAl. 3:27-29).

Who are you?Suh a short question, isnt it? But it is paked with layers o meaning. How shouldwe respond?

Some might highlight their aademi or athleti aomplishments and awards. Others will hooseto emphasize publi pereption and soial status. Tey may boast o their gender, ethniity orphysial attributes. Some identiy themselves by what they do, what they own, or who they are with. But should our identity be dened by these things? What is at the ore o our being?

Te Sriptures speak oten to the question o identity. But the root o identity lies not inperormane, looks, intellet, or personality. As important as those things may be, they are

seondary to the one oundation or identitythe gospel o Jesus christ and our relationship to thetriune God. We either relate to God by humbly trusting Him as Savior or persisting in rebellionagainst Him as our Judge. Either way, it is our relationship to God that onstitutes the mostundamental aspet o our identity.

We were hopeless and helpless in our state o sin. But God. What a proound transition in twowords! Our resue and restoration o identity begins and ends with Jesus christ. But God. Suhsweet words usher us into the beautiul reality known as adoption.

    2. inheritAnce (gAl. 4:1-5).

Would you rather be a slave or a son? Tats not a very difult question to answer, is it? We allreognize that sonship omes with undamental privileges not aorded to slaves. Even more, slaveryis marked by the sins o injustie and oppression. But sonship is beautiul and reeing.Te Bible uses the illustration o slavery to get aross our relationship to sin and the law. Jesusdelared that man is naturally enslaved to sin (John 8:34). In the passage above, Paul stated thatmankind was in slavery under the elemental ores o the worlda phrase paralleled with the lawa ew verses later.

Te law enslaved us by holding out the promise but not the power o redemption. I you obeywas its ondition, but our allen nature ouldnt meet the requirement. Te laws purpose was to leadus to a posture o humble reognition that we are in need o Gods grae.

Tis passage ontrasts two modes o being, two orms o obediene, two undamental identities:

servants and sons. Servanthood is based upon works. Sonship is based upon grae.As a result o sin, mankind is enslaved not only to sin, but also to the wages o sindeath. Tis is

our rightul inheritane as sons o the domain o darkness. But in christ, we have been transerredto a new kingdom o light (col. 1:13-14). We are now heirs o the King, o-heirs with christ.

How does the Bible dene adoption? Te Greek words or adoption or adopted our vetimes in the New estament, eah time by the apostle Paul.

Tough the word itsel is not oten used, the idea o adoption is all over the New estament.christ and the apostles onstantly pointed to the unique sonship o believers. Tey oten spoke othe beautiul relationship we now share with the Father.

    3. spirit (gAl. 4:6-7).

A nal truth we see in this passage is the indwelling presene o the Holy Spirit. Tis presene isa great privilege o the gospel. Jesus alludes to the Spirits presene in John 14:17, and this promisebeame a reality or His disiples at Penteost.

Troughout the Old estament and the gospels, the Spirit was ative. He was present and ativelyinvolved in the reation o the world (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 33:6), He empowered prophets, priests and kings(Num. 11:25; 1 Sam. 16:13) and breathed the Sriptures (2 im. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21). Te Spirit ameupon the Old estament people o God (and oasionally even those who were not His people), butHis work in the Old estament should not be onused with His permanent indwelling in the New.

Tis side o Penteost, the indwelling presene o the Spirit is aomplished at the moment osalvation when we are born again. Indwelling reers to the Spirits permanent presene in the lives othose who have been justied and adopted into the amily o God. At the time o our onversion, weare sealed by the Spirit. He is our down payment or uture salvation, the rstruits o the blessingthat will be ours when Jesus returns and restores all things.

consider the ollowing passages to see the piture o indwelling that emerges rom the Sriptures:Te eets o the Spirit are many. Tey inlude santiation, perseverane, boldness, the ruit othe Spirit, et. But Galatians 4 (see also Rom. 8:15) highlights a partiular benet or ministry othe SpiritHis expression o our new relationship with the Father. Te Spirit testies to a partiularreality: we are sons and daughters o God.

Trough adoption, the Lord God is no longer just Master and King, but He is also aithul Fatherand Friend. Te ombination o both o these perspetives is essential to a healthy relationship withGod. Many o us tend toward one aspet and neglet the other. Reognizing His transendene, weorget His immanene. Seeing His grae, we neglet His justie. Both perspetives need to be upheld.

conclusionTe gospel is suh rih and robust good news. We who are dead are given lie. We who are dirty areleansed. We who were hildren o wrath are made sons o the living God.

At some time, we are all orphans. Like little Oliver wist, we were exposed to the world, vulnerable to the whims o others, and subjet to our own eshly desires. Te law was an orphanageto disipline us or something greater. Let at the mery o the meriless, we were hopeless andhelpless. But God.

In the gospel we nd uneasing treasures o Gods grae. Trough the git o adoption, we haveound hope and help. Orphans are adopted, slaves are made sons. Trough aith in christ, we havereeived a new identity, a new inheritane, and the indwelling presene o God Himsel. Now, our

mission in the world is empowered by the Spirits presene in our lives as He prompts us to share thegood newsthe message o spiritual adoption through aith in christ. o God be the glory! I willnot leave you as orphans; I am oming to you (John 14:18).
