Christmas Message 2013Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds

On this 125th anniversary of the founding of this church, we welcome you and thank you for celebratingChristmas here this year. We have a very special relationship with Christmas at the cathedral – it wasChristmas Eve 1888 that our founders chose the name Christ Church for their new parish. They wantedto establish a congregation that would present the story of Jesus Christ in a gentle and inviting way. Wecarry on that tradition.

The story of the birth of Jesus takes us to the margins of society, where a pregnant woman and herbetrothed husband could not find lodging except in a barn. It was there that our Lord was born. Born inobscurity and dying as a criminal, the story of Jesus continues to engage our imaginations and invites allwho truly hear it into lives of compassion and service.

Here at Christ Church Cathedral we seek to honour those who, like Jesus, live on the edge. Through thefall and winter months members of this parish work to provide food for the hungry — up to 100 peoplea day are fed through the ministries of this church. The 127 Society for Housing, founded from thisCathedral church, provides long term housing in 3 apartment buildings (soon to be 4!): the salaries of theCommunity Workers in these residences are supported through Christ Church Cathedral.

And here every day, and especially on Sundays, we gather to celebrate the presence of God in scripture andsacrament. We pay particular attention to children and young people: we want the story of Jesus to be somuch a part of their lives that they become people of compassion and love in the world.

At Christmas we celebrate the good news that God has come amongst us in the flesh in Jesus Christ—andinvites all of us to be God’s presence of love, justice and compassion in the world today. As you worshiphere this Christmas may you know this love in your life. Know that there’s always a place here for you atChrist Church Cathedral. And as you are able, thank you for your financial support of this place. Your giftsnot only help keep this heritage church open 7 days a week, but also enable the ministries of compassionand care.

We celebrate the vision of our founders, we continue their work of sharing the good news of Jesus, and welook forward to many years of ministry and service in downtown Vancouver living into our motto, “OpenDoors, Open Hearts, Open Minds.”

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above;glory to God in the highest:O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

See how the shepherds summoned to his cradle, leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear;we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Yea Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;Jesu, to thee be glory given;Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Children’s Story

Congregational Carol Good King Wenceslas

Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of StephenWhen the snow lay round about deep and crisp and evenBrightly shone the moon that night though the frost was cruelWhen a poor man came in sight gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me if thou know'st it, tellingYonder peasant, who is he? where and what his dwelling?""Sire, he lives a good league hence underneath the mountainRight against the forest fence by Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine bring me pine logs hither.Thou and I will see him dine when we bear him thither."Page and monarch forth they went, forth they went togetherThrough the rude wind's wild lament and the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now and the wind blows stronger.Fails my heart, I know not how, I can go no longer.""Mark my footsteps, my good page, tread thou in them boldly.Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod where the snow lay dinted.Heat was in the very sod which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure wealth or rank possessingYe who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.
