Christmas Message 2012It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold“Peace on the earth, good will to all from heaven’s all-loving King”

The world in solemn silence lay to hear the angels sing.

For over 120 years this Cathedral church has attempted to be a place where the song of peace and good-will of the angels can be heard again in Vancouver. At Christmas most especially we sing of it, and tell inword and song the story of God being born as a baby in order to bring peace and love to the world. But it is not only at Christmas but throughout the year that we try to live into the angels’ song and makeit closer to reality for the people of our city. We open our doors to the hungry and provide them withrespect and companionship as well as with food. We invite people in to experience the peace and beautythat comes from listening to great music, and also we provide a place for silence and stillness in the midstof bustle and busyness. We celebrate the gifts of children and let them know that they are beloved andessential members of our community. We provide a welcoming space for 12 step groups and a listening earto those wrestling with their own inner tensions and conflicts. We sing and talk and pray together about aworld of peace and justice, and turn in worship to the God who yearns for there to be abundance and lovethroughout the world. In order to be a place of singing and silence, of peace and respect and goodwill, we have to spend money. The money to keep these doors open and food and hospitality flowing out to our city comes from dona-tions given by those who value what they have experienced here. We ask that this Christmas you mightconsider making a gift to this cathedral church so that we can continue to sing the angels’ song in this beau-tiful place.

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above;glory to God in the highest:O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

See how the shepherds summoned to his cradle, leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear;we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Yea Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;Jesu, to thee be glory given;Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.I love you, Lord Jesus — Look down from on highand stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Congregational Carol The First NowellThe first nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay,in fields where they lay keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain

Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far;and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. RefrainAnd by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far;to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. RefrainThis star drew nigh to the northwest; o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. RefrainThen entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. RefrainThen let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord, who hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood salvation bought. Refrain
