student project for revitalisation of built heritage, 9th
semester, 2012
location: The Bazaar Mosque, Prilep, Macedonia
collaboration with: Bojana Koroshevska and Anastasija
Nikolovska
The content of the project is a program that aims tocreate social interactions and attract more people. As the nature of the program focuses on revitalizingthe Bazaar mosque, the old-new facility depicts itselfas a recognizable structure, and with its form, materialization and details tends to become the newfocus and benchmark architecture in the bazaar. Thisthen will rejuvenate the object and give back itshistorical role as a hub of activity and social life inthe environment, with a touch of modern purpose.
The approach of proposing a new volume isunobtrusive in its material representation, withrepetition/extension of some of the existing volumesof the mosque. Thus, the aim of the new facility is toregain the monumentality of the site by imitating thevolume of the mosque and the use of boldmaterialization, which is not found in the closerenvironment.

The design of the landscape around the mosqueforms a new social setting in the bazaar, a smallsquare with three so-called scenes in the open withimprinted steps to learn some of the world famousdances. In order to draw the movement towards theentrance, this square continues with a ramp. Theground floor of the building is first accessed by theentrance lobby, where a small wardrobe andrestrooms are situated in both the left and rightwings. Then, the main stage is approached throughglass doors set in the arcs of the mosque, with theauditorium set to the arcs and the scene set tomihrab of the mosque in the bottom.
With the stairs placed centrally above the entranceone arrives at the upper level where the followingunits are situated: shop and info desk of orientaldances and culture, coffee bar and a hall for dancepractice and two changing rooms with sanitary anddepot for costumes. Stairs, used for communicatingbetween the hall and dressing rooms on the upperlevel and the stage on the lower level, crawl snuglyagainst the back wall of the mosque.
The structural system of the additions consists oflightweight prefabricated panels placed between astructure of a steel skeleton.

the second floor a library, a mediatheque, a readingroom and areas for individual and group researchand debate.
The structures appearing on the perimeter of thenorth-east and north-west side of the site, representthe economic stimulus for the cultural district andaccommodate a creative market, shops for music, books and artistic materials, a publishing house andindividual artistic study.
In the remaining freestanding building, the groundfloor is partly free and there is an open bar and astorage room for the restaurant which is located onthe upper level.
When superposing historical layers and spatialoverlapping of their elements, different relations andinteractions are obtained. The purpose of thisprocedure is the process of re-qualification of thefound production facility to be achieved through theattempt of preserving the language of therecognized architecture.
Recalling upon Peter Eisenman's planning tactics, overlapping of shifting grids, the printout of thebuildings that are not saved, is in one way applied tothe new structure. The result is a new so-called"artificial archeology" of the new structure, which initself carries the imprint of the previous context.
In the retained building of the production hall andthe structure clinging next to it, a cultural andeducational center is inserted, following the principleof "production" of culture and art in the newstructure and "presentation" in the existing structureof the hall. The existing production hall incorporates:an auditorium (in the form of a small universal hallwith additional rooms), exhibition space, depot, space for video projections, administration andaccommodation for visiting artists. In the volume ofthe new structure one can find: multiple zones forworkshops, painting and sculpture studio, choralsinging and small stage for dance and acting, and on

The structural system and materialization aredetermined universally for all new structures, as twodependent aspects that should be derived from eachother. The structural system comprises ofload-bearing walls and slabs, assembly of precastreinforced concrete wall panels and slabs, similar tothe system "Karposh", but yet in a modernized andmodified form.

new multipurpose hall
Second prize for the design entry for construction of a
new multipurpose hall in Skopje, 2013
location: Skopje, Macedonia

By abstracting/subtracting the volume of the oldmultipurpose hall from the given boundaries of thebuilding location, the new model of the building isdefined as a public space and a space thatremembers and celebrates a past time, still focusingon the future and meeting the needs of the city.
This inner plaza presents the womb of the newfacility, the main venue for communication withinthe building and a focal point of gathering andattracting visitors and passersby in the goal ofkeeping the building active throughout the day. Theaccessing and communicating diagram to everysingle use of the new hybrid concept of the buildingis simply solved by assigning the ramp as a mainpedestrian street throughout the void of the absentvolume of the old hall. The emphasized public use asa main feature on the one hand and the contextwithin which the comprehensive program shouldappear on the other hand, imposes the need of anew solution that comprises of a public space, accented, undoubtedly read out, and continuouslyflowing throughout the ground floor. Thus thislocation becomes undoubtedly an urban attraction.

and beams is implemented in a simple manner, while the part of the hall comprises of load-bearingwalls.
Finally, the first contact with the new building isestablished through its facade manifestation. Theoffered solution defines a double facade treatment, where the primary is comprised of glazed areaswhere it is necessary or full facade and a secondaryfacade of aluminum perforated membrane, aconcept of theater curtain, contributing to thesustainability and energy efficiency of the building, but also shaping the character and metaphoricalmanifestation of the primary purpose of the building.
On the account of the liberation of the ground flooras free space, the volume of the multipurpose hall issituated on the upper level, forming a new typologyof urban colonnade, followed by three squares.
Thereby the division of the spatial capacity in twoparts (multipurpose hall and the additional contents)is visible, and they are being continuously connectedthrough the access ramp/street that runsthroughout the inner plaza of the object.
The structural duality is also preserved. In thesegment of the additional uses a skeleton structuralsystems comprising of reinforced concrete columns

student project for architectural design studio, 7th
semester, 2011
location: summer stage Dolni Saraj, Ohrid, Macedonia
collaboration with: Bojana Koroshevska
"The Old Town" of Ohrid, with its particulartopographic configuration and landscape, isextensively rich in monumental buildings fromdifferent parts of its history. The commitment tochange it or upgrade it is a great responsibility.
The historical locality of Dolni Saraj, situated on oneof the most beautiful terraces above the Lake Ohrid, just above the church of St. Sophia, calls formonumentality, abstraction of the idea, simplegeometry and materials that emphasize theabovementioned aspects.
The complete disposition of the program isrepresented by the two longitudinal parts placedalongside the eastern and the western edge of theterrace. In these parts the main users units areorganized: the accommodation capacities and othercontents for the guests in the eastern, and theservices and administrative units in the western part. The two parts are connected with a transept at thesouthern side, where the restaurant is located.Below the level of the ground floor there is a spacenter, in the form dictated by a so-called artificialarcheology.
20
21
Such a disposition of the volumes shapes an innercourtyard - plaza, leading from the entrance on thenorth side to the auditorium and balcony on thesouthern. This square represents an urban publicspace, and as it serves as a communication spot inthe hotel, it is a stimulus of the social life in the cityof Ohrid.

The first contact with the building is establishedthrough its facade manifestation, of course. All threesegments flow into one another vertically and theinsertion of the concrete facade segments and ribs isin direct interaction with the formal configuration ofthe other buildings at the university campus.
The facade articulation and morphologicalconfiguration of the building is in a directcommunication with the Faculty of physicaleducation, sport and health. Due to their urbandesign that forms a special micro-site, the twobuildings interact and create a space that isundisturbed by the differences in their appearance.
The university campus of St. Cyril and Methodius isone of the most significant point of reference in thecity. Defined as the center of education andprogress, with its unique configuration andarchitecture, it creates a whole new system of socialliving dedicated to education and innovation.
The new Faculty of Computer Sciences andEngineering is defined to be the flagship of this idea.Occupying the most out of its building area as aresult of the dense disposition of the programsegments, the building is defined as a system ofpublic and semi-public spaces intended primarily forits users.
Starting from the ground level, the mainrecognizable feature is defined as "the internalstreet", which creates the public nature of thebuilding and allows an uninterrupted communicationthrough it. Different uses in the building are situatedtangentially around this component.
The vertical arrangement of the program providescircular configuration around the galleries of theinternal street. The main program segments aredefined as: educational center, research center andcomputer center, are accessible and used asseparate units, but also joint sections that flowthrough the suggested volume.
26
27
With its disposition in the the basement level, andthe dual approach (from underground and groundlevel), maximum use of the program unit is ensuredand the continuous distribution of the rest of theprogram is enabled.
The first contact with the building is establishedthrough its facade manifestation. The dominantapproach is the use of the dark fiberglass facadefinish which in places is interrupted by the use ofglazed surfaces. In the dominant shell of fiberglassfinish, the occurrence of big openings that oversees"behind" the shell is striking.
The formal manner of the new building for theFaculty of Physical Education, Sport and Healthepitomizes the use of spaces dedicated to physicalmovement and sports.
The main communication in the building is a systemof ramps with a dual function - distribution of usersand a jogging path. Thus, this system of rampsbecomes the main "sports internal street" in thebuilding. This street is connected with the micro-site,allowing continuous physical activity in and out of it.The emphasis is placed on the proposed solution ofthe segment of the sports hall, the holder of thewhole program.

The different program units are grouped bysimilarity (spa services, physiotherapy, accommodation and gastronomic center) in differentvolumes, with previously adopted dimensions.
The final architecture of the complex is unobtrusiveand in a way nuanced with the untouched nature ofthe micro location, and it seems as it was grownthere.
The outgoing parameter in the genesis of the spatialdisposition of the different volumes of therecreational spa originates from the spatialorganization of the houses and barns in the village, usually with a square floor plan and intuitivelyarranged regarding the topographic configuration.Consequently the spa center intends to generate acenter of events by itself, partially detached fromthe village.
