What do we mean by Meniere’s Disease?

[3]Meniere’s disease is related with abnormal flow of fluids in the inner ear which causes sudden attacks ofvertigo (spinning motion), dizziness, a roaring or ringing sound in your ear (tinnitus), feeling of pressure orfullness and [4]pain in the ear. This disease usually affects one ear only. It is more common in the people ofthe age group of 40 to 60 years.

What are the causes of Meniere’s disease?

The exact cause of [5]Meniere’s disease is still not known. But abnormal volume or mixing of fluids isthe largely accepted cause of this disease. Apart from this, many other factors are also considered responsible

6

Page 7: Gopesh K. Sharma, MD Articles

for triggering this disease:

• Circulation Problems

• Viral Infection

• Allergies

• Irregular Fluid Drainage

• Genetic Predisposition

• Head Injury or Trauma

• Migraines

• An Autoimmune Reaction

What are the signs and symptoms of Meniere’s Disease?

Symptoms associated with [6]Meniere’s disease seem to occur as episodes or attacks. Following are thepotential signs and symptoms of Meniere’s disease:

• Episodes of vertigo (spinning sensation) followed by off balanced sensation, nausea and at times vomiting

• Sweating due to severe vertigo

• Tinnitus; perception or feeling of ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling or hissing sound in the affected ear

• Loss of hearing in the affected ear

• Aural fullness or increased pressure in the ear

• Headaches

• Sensitivity to loud noises or sounds

What are the treatment options available to treat Meniere’s Disease?

Researches show that most of the patients respond to [7]treatments forwarded for Meniere’s disease. [8]Doctorsadopt number of strategies including the following to treat and manage the symptoms following this disease:

• Medications: [9]Doctors may prescribe certain motion sickness and anti-nausea medications tominimize and relieve the symptoms of vertigo and nausea. Medications to treat dizziness are alsoprescribed.

• Injections: Doctors may also inject antibiotics and steroids into your inner ear through the middleear to minimize the vertigo and imbalance symptoms.

• Hearing Aids: Hearing aids may be advised to improve hearing. Other than this, to improvise thefluid exchange; a device delivering air pulses to middle ear may be fitted into the [10]outer ear.

7

Page 8: Gopesh K. Sharma, MD Articles

• Surgery: When all these treatment techniques do not prove helpful to improve the condition thento treat severe, recurring and disabling vertigo; surgery is advised as a treatment option. One of thefollowing procedures may be adopted:

1. Endolymphatic Sac Procedure is performed to reduce the production of fluid and to increase the fluiddrainage.

2. Vestibular Nerve Section Procedure is performed; where nerve connecting the ear to brain is cut tominimize vertigo.

Balloon Sinuplasty (2014-04-26 10:57)

Treating Sinusitis with Balloon Sinuplasty

According to the report issued; every year 37 million Americans are getting affected with[1] Sinusitis.Though majority of the people get relieved with the help of medicines, there are still a certain number ofpeople who require additional procedures than medications.

What do you mean by Sinusitis?

The infection or inflammation of [2]Sinus lining is known as Sinusitis. This inflammation happens dueto the[3] swollen sinus openings which in turn shuts the drainage of mucus thus leading to [4]Sinusitis.

What are the symptoms associated with Sinusitis?

The potential signs and symptom of Sinusitis may include:

• Difficulty in breathing through nose

8

Page 9: Gopesh K. Sharma, MD Articles

• Yellow or green mucus

• Facial pain and Congestion

• Toothache

• Losing the sense of smell or taste

• Headache and Sore Throat

• Fatigue

• Bad Breath

What are the treatment options available to treat Sinusitis?

[5]Doctors or Otolaryngologists mainly use three types of options to treat Sinusitis:

• Medical Therapy

• FESS(Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery)

• Balloon Sinuplasty

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon Sinuplasty is the latest and minimally invasive technology used by [6]Otolaryngologists to treatrecurrent, [7]acute or chronic sinusitis. Balloon Sinuplasty; unlike conventional sinus surgery does not requirecutting and removal of bone and tissues. Instead, a small and flexible balloon catheter is used to open up thecongested sinus pathways which in turn facilitate the flow of mucus.

How is the Balloon Sinuplasty performed?

[8]Balloon Sinuplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia. During the procedure, a small andflexible wire catheter equipped with a tiny balloon is inserted through your nostril by an ENT to reach theinflamed sinus. Thereafter, the balloon is gradually inflated to restructure and widen the [9]blocked nasalpassage, thus allowing the nasal cavity to drain better. The balloon is then deflated and withdrawn; leavingan open sinus passage.

What are the benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty?

• [10]Balloon Sinuplasty has been indicated to be clinically safe, effective and minimally invasive as well.

• The procedure involved is less painful and as well as there is a lower risk of swelling, bleeding, bruisingand infection.

• No bone and tissue is removed thus natural sinus openings are preserved.

• Recovery is faster than the conventional sinus surgical procedures.

It is a common disease affecting 1 out of every 10 people.

What do you understand by Swimmer’s Ear?

Infection or inflammation of outer ear canal is known as Swimmer’s Ear or Otitis Externa. Either thebacteria or fungus can cause this condition as the water trapped in the ear canal provides a breeding groundfor bacteria or fungi.

What are the potential causes of Swimmer’s Ear or Otitis Externa?

As the name itself suggests, the most common reason of [3]Swimmer’s Ear is the increased or excessive

11

moisture in the ear canal due to bathing, showering or swimming. When the water gets trapped into theear canal, the growth of bacteria or fungi multiplies which eventually leads to Otitis Externa. Other factorsleading to Swimmer’s Ear may include:

• Allergies, bony overgrowths in the ear canal and sweating• Abrasive cleaning of the ear canal or cleaning ear canal with a sharp object• Scraping the ear canal with cotton swabs, fingernails or bobby pins• Skin infections like; psoriasis, eczema or seborrhoea• Ear plugs, hearing aids or headphones inserted into the ears• Chemicals in the hair dyes, shampoos, bleaches and soaps• Living in warm and humid temperatures• Trauma to ear canal• Dry ear canal skin, lack of ear wax and damaged ear canal skin

How can Swimmer’s Ear be treated?

Swimmer’s Ear is not a dangerous condition if treated properly by an [4]eminent otolaryngologist. You usuallyget well within seven to ten days after starting your treatment. [5]Otolaryngologist will determine your courseof treatment after considering your age, overall health and medical history. The treatment options extendedby an otolaryngologist may include:• Professional cleaning of your ear canal using a cotton-tipped probe or a suction device. This would furtherhelp to keep ear canal open, to remove debris and to decrease bacterial count as well.• Either of the antibiotic or corticosteroid ear drops may be prescribed to relieve itching or to fight infection• If your ear canal is swollen shut; your doctor may place a sponge or wick in to the ear canal to makeantibiotics work more effectively• Non oto-toxic topical treatment is prescribed if you have tubes in your ear drums• Topical antibiotics may be prescribed to treat infected ear canal and oral antibiotics will be prescribed totreat the infection beyond the ear canal• Follow-up [6]appointments are scheduled to repeat ear cleaning, replace ear wicks and to monitor yourprogress• Pain medications may also be prescribed and you are instructed to keep your ear dry during the treatment
