Gopal Balakrishnan will speak about how the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis has put a question mark around the account of capitalist globalization as destined to expand irresistibly into the foreseeable future. He will defend Marx’s explanation of why the capitalist system not only generates such cyclical crises, but also how it reaches the outer limit of development. He will also consider the political scenarios that arise amidst this convoluted “end of capitalism.” Balakrishnan is a professor in the Department of the History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz, teaching seminars in classical political thought, philosophy from Plato to Hegel, Marxism, and critical theory. He is a long-time member of the editorial board of the New Left Review and has been a regular contributor of this journal. He is the author of The Enemy (2000), a comprehensive, critical reconstruction and contextualization of the entire oeuvre of Carl Schmitt, Debating Empire (2003), Antagonistics: Capitalism and Power in an age of War (2008) and is close to completing a two volume reconstruction of Marx's thought entitled The Architectonic of Capital.
Professor Balakrishnan will sign books following his lecture. The UH Bookstore will have books available for purchase.
