WHY Clothing.. - Repositioning cloth beyond charity; not as a donation but
as a development resource
- Forming a channel for urban India’s waste; anytime
anyone thinks of disposing off reusable material, they should
have a channel to reach it to the most needy.
- An idea that aims to address one of the biggest gap
area i.e. „lack of clothing‟ during winters. A much
predictable & an annual disaster !!
- Offers a solution in the shape of clean cloth sanitary
napkin for women who don‟t have enough to cover to
themselves.
- And it’s ultimately about dignity of someone!!
Our initiatives..

School to School- Sensitising urban schools to the educational needs of their counterparts in remote village schools.Channelising school material from one end to the other by building a long term relationship among them.
Not Just a piece of cloth- Turning old cotton cloth into sanitary napkins for women in slums and villages.

URBAN RURAL
Clothing with Dignity..
A village takes up a cleanliness drive,
Bihar
Road repair work in Morigaon,
Assam
Repositioning cloth as a
development resource instead of a
traditional charitable item.
Village communities are motivated
to identify the pressing development
needs of their own area.
They are encouraged to do
shramdaan ( community labour) and
get material in return, with dignity; as
a reward.
It helps develop a stronger
relationship between our local partner
organisation and the communities they
are working with.
Ultimate wastage is used a resource
Impact Cloth For Work Using cloth as a resource for many neglected development activities across India
Making drain , Bihar
Road repair,
Sunderban delta, WB Cleaning village, Bihar
Plantation, Maharashtra Cleaning of drainage
system, Bihar
Cloth For Work Turning cloth into a resource for many development activities across the country..
Made boundary wall of
the school, Maharashtra
Making a village school in Rs.80/- (less than $ 2)
People of Sitamarhi contributed bamboos and dry grass and worked for a day to make this
structure. GOONJ‟s expenditure was just Rs. 80 only, just to buy some steel wire to make the
structure strong. GOONJ provided basic clothes & school material as a motivation.
In Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh),
people‟s act of clearing their
fields off stones and pebbles
made acres of land more fertile.
A slopy stretch of land was
converted into steps where the
extra collected stones were reused
to build a basic staircase. Now,
women can easily walk on this
stretch with the water they fetch
from nearby, averting many
accidents..
Glimpses of Cloth for Work in Khandwa
Hundreds of villagers
are now taking large
scale land bunding as
one of the major
initiative under Cloth
for Work
Paucity of water is a big issue in Khandwa, MP. A classic case study of Shramdaan
was seen when villagers of Salidhana decided to dig up a well for themselves. A site
of cheer was witnessed when ultimately in January ‟09 they got water !
Innovative ideas responding to ignored needs
In Malnutrition hit Khandwa, MP,
waste water is channelised from
hand pumps to build kitchen
gardens. Now children in the
nearby school can have vegetables
in their midday meals.
Local villagers cleaned up their
well . The availability of water is
supporting agricultural activities
and local brick making work.
Making a bridge with village wisdom and resources
A 240 ft x 6 ft bamboo bridge made on river Sukhsar in Bihar. No money involved, voluntary
labor by the villagers, made under Cloth for Work/Vaapsi. The bridge connects many villages
now. Many other villages are motivated to take up similar initiatives.
SCHOOL to SCHOOL Winner of Changemakers Innovation Award..
S2S is one of GOONJ’s flagship
initiative channelising educational
and recreational material from the
cities for the children in villages &
slums across the country.
This is not a donation or charity
programme BUT it builds better
awareness among city kids about
the realities of millions of their
rural counterparts.
Urban school children not
only give their own
material, they organise
collection camps, talk to
people about the concept
Regular supply of educational &
recreational material from the cities
to the villages is acting as a strong
motivation for thousands of children
to continue their education.
A step to convert hundreds of
Aanganwadis into colourful and child
friendly places.
An Aanganwadi worker explains the
impact - “Pehley bachcha aata nahi tha,
ab bachcha jata nahi ” means earlier the
kids didn‟t use to come, now they don‟t
go !!
Turning disaster wastage into resources..
More than 100 trucks of clothing
was lying un-utilized in Tamil
Nadu Govt. godown Setting up systems and

Not just a piece of cloth Winner of World Bank‟s Global DM Award 2007

moisture free
Packing of ready napkins The final product Folding
Sensitizing urban
women about the plight
of countless women;
forced to use sand, ash,
rage, newspapers
during menses
Rural women openly
talk on the issue and
learn to discriminate
what they should use
Women also learn about
