A message from Deb ...

Our first week back has been very successful. Students have settled in quickly and it has been great to move around the school and see so many smiling faces.

During these first few weeks classes establish their goals and expectations for behaviour. Time is spent doing a range of social learning activities to ensure students feel connected and understand what our school values - respect fairness and achievement, look like in practice.

Within the class and across the school students will take on responsibilities. There will be opportunities for students to take on specific leadership roles as part of our Student Leadership program.

During the year staff will be looking closely at how we incorporate the General Capabilities into our teaching practice.

The General Capabilities are overarching aspects of learning included in the Australian Curriculum, they are: Ethical and Intercultural understandings, Creative and Critical Thinking, Personal and Social Capabilities, Numeracy, Literacy and Information and Communication Technologies.

Our focus on Quality Teaching and Learning connects well with these as does our focus on: Student lead learning experiences.

Providing students opportunities to understand how they learn and make the links to personal goals.

Negotiating tasks, goals and expectations.

Explicitly teaching group skills so learning conversations between peers is valued.

Whole school agreement forms Students will be bringing home the Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use of electronic devices for signing in the next few weeks. The purpose of this is to ensure parents/ caregivers and children have a clear understanding of the way we work together at Goodwood Primary.

We value feedback!!! At the beginning of a school year there are often questions that come up in terms of school routines and how the new year is set up. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to discuss

questions. Jenny and I are also available so please feel free to make an appointment. Thinking about this I would also encourage you to... ‘Tell others what they do well and what you like about them… and that aspect of their behaviour is likely to be much more in evidence...’ In other words a balance of constructive criticism and what is going well is always helpful.

Transition to school and preschool Our new reception classes and preschool children have had a very smooth start.

We want to welcome all our new children to Goodwood Community and thank the staff involved in the transition during 2014, their efforts have lead to the positive start for 2015.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our two community events coming up: the breakfast

this Friday morning at 8am in the PAC and at the Acquaintance Night/AGM next Tuesday February 10th at 5:30.

Kind regards,

Alex Duncan Year 4/5

Hi I am very excited about being a part of the Goodwood Community. I have been teaching Reception to year 7 at Torrensville Primary School over the

past 4 years. Our class has had a fabulous first week and we are enjoying getting to know each other.

Sarah Dingle Year 1 Hello I have taught many varied year levels over the past 5 years most recently I have worked with Reception, year1 and 2 students.

Kim Raftery Preschool Teacher

Hi I have been working in preschools for the past 15 years. I love working with students in the outdoors and involving children in their learning experiences. I look forward to developing relationships with kids and families at Goodwood Preschool.

Fiona Dobrowolski I am looking forward to being a School Support Officer here at Goodwood Primary. I enjoy working with children.

Nicole Tamasi Hi I have been a SSO for 4 years. I love

working with the kids and watching them learn and grow. I look forward to getting to know everyone as I have heard lots of positive things about Goodwood Primary.

Our Year 6 teachers... Omission in last weeks news from Deb: Silvana Barbon was not included as a teacher of our year 6 class. Silvana will be teaching our year 6 students on Fridays. We apologise to Silvana for this omission.

BIRTHDAY CAKES/PARTY INVITATIONS

BIRTHDAY CAKES: At Goodwood Primary School we celebrate children’s birthdays in a range of ways such as singing to the birthday child, giving them a birthday sticker or perhaps the child

pops a balloon on the interactive whiteboard and a song occurs etc. We appreciate that birthdays are a special occasion. We do not share birthday cakes at school and seek parent support with this. We ask that parents keep cake sharing for family time and/or parties outside of school hours. This supports our DECD Healthy Eating Guidelines and those children who have allergies.

PARTY INVITATIONS: Parties are an important and exciting event in children’s lives (and for many adults too!). However we know that parties cannot include every child in the class so therefore seek parent support in ensuring party invitations are

distributed in a sensitive manner (eg posted out or handed out discreetly out of hours). At the same time parents are encouraged to develop their child’s resilience in managing disappointments as they are a reality of life and we all need to learn to deal with them.

SWIMMING PROGRAM 2015 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR R-5 PARENTS

All students from Reception up to and including the year 5 students, and the three IEL classes attend a full week of swimming lessons as a mandatory part of our Physical Education Curriculum.

This year swimming lessons will be in week 5 (23rd

Feb-27th

Feb) at the Unley Swimming Centre, Forestville. There are some important requirements that parents are requested to attend to prior to week 5. These include:

› Due to child protection requirements adults are unable to be supervising in change-rooms unless they have a current criminal history screening. Therefore it is important that all children start practising these skills if they don’t already manage dressing independently.

› Parents are only allowed to dry and help their own child

change but are not allowed into the change rooms so this is why children need to practise these skills. Assistance can be provided with shoes and socks.

› Parents cannot take any photographs at DECD swimming

lessons. This is DECD Policy and Unley Council Policy (who run the pool).

› Parents and visitors attending the lessons to watch their

children or grandchildren must wear a badge that identifies them as connected to the school (the teacher can give you these prior).

CLASSROOMS AND CHANGES IN PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS Parents will have noticed that classroom spaces are changing in terms of layout and furniture and that there is an increased emphasis on creating a more homely environment that is flexible rather than an institutionalized looking space. Children are more involved in working out how they would like their space to look (ie environments are personalized). This is all linked to what we know about optimum learning environments

and the way children learn. For example round tables facilitate collaboration between students and provide options for different ways of grouping students. The ability to collaborate is considered an essential 21

st century skill. Professor John Hattie, (author of

‘Visible Learning’ and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute) has demonstrated through 767 studies that peer tutoring has a powerful effect on learning. The academic and social benefits are great for both the tutor and those being tutored. Using light, versatile, portable seating supports flexibility in how spaces are used and sitting on a stool requires activation of core muscles. There is less emphasis on sitting on a defined

seat at a desk for long periods of the day.

UNIFORM POLICY

Our uniform policy expects all students to wear the school colours of navy blue and gold and as a community this is well supported. However, we seek parent and

student support in keeping denim wear for weekend wear, as we see denim worn in various shades of blue other than navy. We also expect students to be Sun Smart in line with our policy of protecting children from the effects of high UV rays. Very short shorts are not supporting sun safe behaviours and wearing them exposes more skin for

possible sunburn. We request that short shorts are not worn to school.

Instrumental Music

Learn Through Music provide an instrumental music service. You can access information about this service from the front office.

Teachers too benefit from working collaboratively with a peer and research supports this. Teachers who are working in our double classroom spaces this year are already seeing and experiencing the benefits of working in a team. Teachers bring expertise in different areas and being able to share this

when planning can increase the opportunities for our students. Jenny Wade

SOCIAL LEARNING PROGRAM At GPS we commence the school year with a strong focus on Social Learning. Developing social and personal skills support children to understand themselves and others. Strong skills support children to manage their lives, thereby helping them to work and learn effectively. By engaging in a range of activities and learning tasks that support the development of these skills a positive classroom culture and respectful, cohesive relationships are built. Teachers also facilitate the development of a class code of

conduct, class identity and the expected routines, both in the classroom and across the school. In addition, the school values of Fairness, Achievement and Respect are highlighted within these two weeks. Our first assembly for the school year in week 3 on Wednesday (11

th Feb) at 2:30pm will showcase some of the learning

related to this. Jenny Wade

Goodwood Primary School … Class Parents, are you interested? We need you!!!!!

We are a very community orientated school and parents value participating in many different ways. To support this we ask for a minimum of 2 parents to nominate themselves to take on this role.

Role of Class Parents:

Provide school community focal point for each class.

Support other parents

Encourage participation

Communicate Governing Council events, activities, programs

To ‘facilitate participation’, not to be the only one participating (ie organise others to contribute to class baskets for a raffle – don’t do it all yourself!)

PLEASE NOTE: Personal or learning issues directly related to another child’s progress are not the business of Class Parents. Parents need to seek out the class teacher or leadership to discuss anything of this nature. Class parents can also direct parents to the teacher or leadership.

Things to consider as a class parent:

Teachers: Respect the individual positions of each class teachers. Communicate your plans and seek their prior approval if it intrudes into their schedule. If problems arise, arrange events that can occur separately from the planned activities of the teacher i.e. out of hours events.

Practical Outcomes: Take it upon yourself to actively communicate and engaged with other parents and let them know that you are the Class Parent Arrange class gatherings (e.g. after school informal get together) Utilise the Buzz Book (to be distributed shortly) to arrange a contact list of other parents on email (you might need to follow up a few missing names / contact details). Say hello and welcome new parents / families - particularly new families from other countries Actively promote and recruit social event participation (eg tables at quiz night, contributions to class baskets, attendance at the Extravaganza etc) Take the time to appropriately celebrate or commiserate family events within your class community. Communicate with teachers – be a focal point to connect parents and the teacher (if required). Involve yourself with Governing Council sub committees if interested in specific school directions (eg finance, fundraising, student wellbeing, grounds and buildings, canteen, uniform sales, after hours care, sports etc) – if interested please feel free to call me on 0414 655 499 or email me: [email protected]. Generally - share the GPS love!!!!!!!!

Governing Council Interface Intend to meet briefly once per term touch base on upcoming events, programmed activities, class participation etc

SPORTS DAY 2015 For many years Goodwood Primary School has held a Twilight Sports Day at Goodwood Oval, Millswood. Children have stayed home from school until 1:30pm and then they have walked over to Goodwood Oval in class groups. Then they have participated in tabloid and championship events for about 4 hours. After careful consideration, and in consultation with the Governing Council, Goodwood Primary School’s Sports Day will be held

within usual school hours in 2015 as a TRIAL. The critical factor in making this decision is based upon the wellbeing and participation for all of our students, but in particular the Early Years students. In the past with events starting close to 2:30pm, many Early Years students have struggled to fully participate in the activities due to the time of the day. Their energy levels and resilience are lower as the day progresses. It becomes significantly challenging to keep many of them going for these reasons. This affects their enjoyment of the day. We also intend to have our Sports Day in week 2 Term 2 (Wed

May 6th

) which will facilitate compliance with recommended Sunsmart guidelines. We value community involvement so we encourage the parent community to plan ahead and book time away from work if possible on this day. This is also important to the children. We plan to have a dedicated lunch break where families can picnic together with their class groups in addition to other break times. It is important to note that a review process will take place shortly after Sports Day to enable feedback on the day and enable comparisons between the model of Twilight Sports Day

and School Day Sports Day. We appreciate your support in accepting a trial of a new model for 2015.

ITALIAN NEWS Languages is one of the Learning areas that is part of the Australian curriculum.

Students are able to engage in learning a language in addition to English. At

Goodwood Primary School, Italian is taught from reception to year 7 for 50

minutes per week. Students go to the Specialist room where Italian language is

displayed in the room to assist language learning.

There are many reasons why students study Italian. Italian is one of the major community languages in

Australia. As Italian is widely spoken in Australia, there are many opportunities to hear and use the

language in real life situations.

Further, as Italian has similar letters and sounds to English it is one of easiest languages to learn. It has

many connections with English, sharing many Latin derived words therefore many Italian words are

instantly recognized.

The study of Italian links to other curriculum areas such as History, Geography, Arts,

Music and Literacy.

Students at GPS study Italian using a thematic approach whilst incorporating drama, arts, design &

technology and information technology.

AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM & LANGUAGES

I plan to implement my programming according to

the Australian Curriculum guidelines. Within the

strands of Communication and Understanding I

will design units of work to suit each band. Then I

will assess and report student performance against

achievement standards.

GIARDINO ITALIANO

Above is a photo of the Italian garden at the Goody Patch where there are traditional herbs and

vegetables planted. Also there are signs with the names of these in Italian. Last year, produce was utilised

and students assisted in preparing, cooking and sampling of Risotto.

If parents have any queries about the learning of Italian please contact me as I am happy to answer any questions.

Term 1 Overview

Beginning of the year I will start teaching all classes

the topic of greetings and describing themselves.

“Ciao! Mi chiamo…..”

Younger classes will be listening to a story called “Il Piccolo Capitano” - ”The Little Captain” where students will

participate with activities related to this text.

Older classes will be doing an Investigation Inquiry about themselves and present an oral presentation in

Italian to the class.

Ciao da Signora Barbon

Health and Physical Education Lessons at Goodwood Primary School.

Your child will receive two lessons of Physical Education each week and a health lesson, IEL classes this varies.

Health lessons will cover the areas, Social Skills, Relationships, Food and Nutrition, Well Being and Keeping Safe - Child Protection.

The Phys Ed program will involve the students participating in different forms of physical activity such as game skills, social skill games, sport education, dance, simple gymnastics and swimming or aquatics.

The Physical Education program will work on sequential development of skills in the above areas during the year and in Term 1 – Junior Primary classes will focus on fundamental movement skills and social skill games while Primary students will be concentrating on social skills activities and

development of games skills. All classes will be practising activities for sports day this term.

The Health program for Term 1 is covering Social Skills/Relationships, Identity, Emotions and How we change as we Grow.

Your child’s Physical Education Day is:

Clothing: On your child’s Phys Ed day it is important that they come dressed appropriately for physical activity and with shoes that will support their ankles, no sandals, high heels, thin straps or boots. Long hair needs to be tied back for safety reasons.

They need to wear a hat when activities are planned for outdoors and if they don’t have one, they will have to sit in the shade and miss a learning opportunity. It is also really important that all students have a drink bottle so they can re-hydrate as they need it. Sunscreen is recommended when we are outdoors.

Illness/Injuries: If your child is unable to participate in a Physical Education lesson for any reason we will need a note from you to exclude them. If there is no note we will presume that they are able to participate in the lesson.

SAPSASA: Swimming will be held this term. Students who turn 10, 11 12 or 13 this year are eligible for this

event. Girls in Year 6/7 will be able to try out for the Adelaide South East district softball team. Other sports will be offered later in the year. Information will be given out to students as we receive it. If you have any questions about Health, Phys Ed or SAPSASA please contact us through the Front Office.
