Living with his brother, Henry, in Smith River Valley, Montana in C/1880
Townsend, Montanna - Funeral services for Avon Goodale whose body was recovered Saturday
afternoon from the sloughs of the Missouri River, were held at the Methodist Church. Mr.
Goodale was one of the Broadwater County pioneer citizens and held in the highest esteem by
everyone in the community. He was known to be honest and truly one of the sturdy "old-timers" of
this section. He was born in the State of Maine in 1859 and lived there until he was 14 years of
age when, in 1873, he came to Montana. He first located in Smith River Valley and engaged in
stock raising with his brother, John (Henry), later coming to Townsend where he was in the
livery business. On March 16, 1904, he married Katherine Broderick who preceded him in death
six years ago. He, with his wife, had charge of the county poor farm for seven years covering the
period from 1918 to 1925, after which he engaged in business for a couple years in Townsend,
being proprietor of the "Rainbow" soft drink and confection. He is survived by two brothers and
two sisters and a daughter (Irena) by a former marriage. ~ Helena Independent (MT), 1 Oct 1931
