Yet another SLC has flown by and for some it was the last, and
others just the beginning. But, for all of us, it was a celebration of our
passion for the healthcare profession, and I can’t wait to continue this
celebration with those of you who have qualified for the ILC! It is an honor
to be the state that gets to host this dignified event, and it is of utmost
importance that we represent our state well. Therefore, I am calling on all
attendees to bring their passion, energy, and A‐game. I would also like to
remind those attending ILC about all that there is to experience besides
competitions. There will be an exposition where you can meet all kinds of
healthcare professionals and get to see all kinds of new healthcare
products ‐ from textbooks to technology. Not to mention the countless
leadership and healthcare related workshops that will be taking place
throughout the conference. Finally, I would like to urge everyone to
network! This is such a unique opportunity to meet people from across the
globe who share your passions. So, say hi to those around you, ask where
they're from, maybe ask about their competition or future aspirations. I
can’t wait to make more memories with Florida HOSA, and this time along
with the rest of the world.
Goodbye SLC, Hello ILC

Transition from the 2018‐19 State Officer Team to the 2019‐20 team. Much respect and gratitude for the previous team, and a lot of excitement for the new team. They are about to take their HOSA journey to the next level by serving the members of Florida HOSA statewide. However, before beginning their terms of office, it is important they get a chance to understand one another and prepare for the year ahead of them. This preparation is conducted at the New Officer Conference. During NOC, your team will undergo training to help them throughout their terms, from giving speeches to rules and etiquette, and everything in between. This will not only make for a strong team, but will also continue to keep our organization successful. It is imperative that the State Officers are aware of each other’s strengths to effectively fulfill our responsibilities. After taking the time to better understand each other, your new team will be ready to serve you! Please help me welcome the new State Officer team! President‐Elect ‐ Varsha Katoju; Northern Vice‐President, Secondary ‐ Neha Dantuluri; Northern Vice‐President, Postsecondary ‐ Brandon Shadeed; Southern Vice‐President, Secondary ‐ Noel Michel; and Parliamentarian ‐ Joshua Hanlon.
New State Officer Team!
A Big Thank You to Our Advisors!
Sricharan Pusala State President‐Elect
Brandon Shadeed State Northern Vice‐ President, Secondary
The 2019 State Leadership Conference was a huge success! Thank you to all of the members, advisors, and guests that came out. All of the State Officers enjoyed meeting each and every one of you and creating many more bonds. This conference wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing help from our volunteers, Courtesy Corps, past State Officers, alumni and, of course, our advisors!
If everyone only knew how much the advisors do for Florida HOSA. We would like to put it this way - SLC would not be possible without the endless support from our advisors. We appreciate each and every single one of our amazing advisors. Our appreciation goes out to those advisors that were able to bring their chapters to the SLC and continue to support their students. We also want to give a huge thank you to those advisors that were able to fit time into their busy schedules and help out at the conference. Advisors were all over the place helping out! We most definitely couldn’t have done it without you!
Florida HOSA, thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to serve you this past year. I am so honored to be able to be back this year and continue to give back to the origination that has given me so much. I look forward to seeing all of you around this coming year.

Florida HOSA, this past year has been outstanding and momentous through the broken records and memories made. The passion and purpose shown through your dedication and service has made this year one of the best yet! From the final gavel tap from ILC 2018, our incredible year began! As summer progressed, the anticipation for the new school year grew; for our fresh books, our new classes, and another year of HOSA! You all jumped right into action at your various regional conferences and FLDA. The Classical Greek Leaders at our Fall Leadership Development Academy helped establish core values in our members that were stronger than Ancient Greece! You demonstrated what it means to lead by example by communicating, being creative, and persevering. It was amazing to see old faces and meet faces anew. Ideas and stories were shared while your drive and dedication heated up! Your excitement carried over to the competitive events this past Winter. The State Team was awestruck by the demonstration of skills and talents at each region’s conference we visited. And that spark lit the fire that was unleashed at the State Leadership Conference this past March! The Sunshine State shined at our SLC and every moment was precious from the first gavel tap until the last. But don’t fret! For everyone who attained the chance to represent us at the International Leadership Conference - congratulations! We’ll be seeing you right in our own backyard again in June! Even as we look into the future, don’t forget the bonds and memories that were made this year. Our success and challenges form us into the leaders and future health professionals that we are today. Thank you, Florida HOSA, for being the amazing organization that you are. Even as this year ends, we know that we’ll have an incredible one again.
Congratulation class of 2019! As this year comes to end, you begin to look back on your year in HOSA and wonder if your time with HOSA is over. Lucky for you, our Florida HOSA State Association has Postsecondary/Collegiate chapters at different Florida colleges/universities where you could still attend conferences, compete, and partake in the various events in which you have participated since high school. If your college doesn’t have a HOSA chapter, you could start your very own chapter. The only requirement is that you’ll need at least 5 members and an advisor. More information can be found at http://www.flhosa.org/resourcespublications/starting-a-chapter and http://www.hosa.org/sites/default/files/PostsecondaryCollegate%20Handbook%20Jan%202015.pdf. Once you graduate college, your HOSA journey doesn’t have to stop there. After college you are able to register to become a member of the Florida HOSA Alumni and Professional Association (FHAPA). FHAPA was established “to support and promote Florida HOSA activities at chapter, regional, and state levels.” FHAPA gives you the opportunity to help Florida HOSA by judging and coordinating competitive events and much more. FHAPA membership dues are only $10. For more information, just visit this website. http://www.flhosa.org/about-us/fhapa It has truly been an honor to serve you all this past year. I wish you all the best of luck in your future professions.

From One Great Year to the Next
HOSA Fun Never Ends!
This past State Leadership Conference was successful and memorable, and it was all because of the members, advisors, and volunteers. As always, it was great meeting more of our Florida HOSA members and seeing some familiar faces! Every year Florida HOSA raises money for the HOSA Service Project, for 2018 ‐ 2020 the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. The biggest fundraiser that we hold at the State Leadership Conference is Penny Wars where each region tries to raise the most money and be crowned the Penny Wars Champion! Each region had a jar where members placed money. For every penny that was placed in a region’s jar that region was rewarded one point. However, for every silver coin or paper bill that was placed in a region’s jar, that is how many points were taken away from their total. For example, if there are 200 pennies in a jar, that is 200 points. If two dollar bills, or any combination of silver that adds up to $2, are added to the jar, the total points for that region are now 0. The total points were added up at the end of the conference and the results were announced. In third place, raising a total of $962.15 is the Suncoast Region (4). In second place, raising a total of $1,337.33 is the Sunset Region (6). And for the fourth consecutive year, in the first place spot, the region that had the most points is the Broward Region with $5,623.72! This year’s SLC Penny
Wars raised a Grand Total of $11,029.54!! I am so proud of what everyone was able to accomplish and cannot wait to see all the members that will be representing Florida HOSA at this year’s International Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL. It has been an honor serving you these past two years, and I am excited for our last hurrah!!
Charles Benitez State Southern Vice‐
President, PS/C
Shane Alexander State Parliamentarian
As you know, we are global organization. And as we get ready to represent our State Association at the International Leadership Conference in Orlando this year, we want to make sure we look our very best! Remember that the dress code for ILC is the official HOSA uniform or a black/navy blue suit jacket, black/navy blue pants for men, black/navy blue slacks or skirts for ladies, a white collared shirt for men, white blouse for ladies, black/navy blue closed‐toed shoes, and black/navy blue belt. The attire should all be one color (black blazer with black pants or navy blue blazer with navy blue pants). Men are also required to wear a maroon/navy blue tie, while the ladies have the option of wearing the official HOSA scarf. Shirts should be tucked in and no undergarments should be visible while in official HOSA attire. During the competition, proper attire may vary from the official HOSA attire. Business attire, scrubs, or khakis with a polo might be able to be worn; check your event guidelines which go into more detail about the dress code for each individual competition. I look forward to seeing you all looking sharp in Orlando for the International Leadership Conference ‐ don’t forget to say hello!

The Gulf Coast Region kicked off the 2018 ‐ 2019 HOSA year by voting for our Regional Officers ‐ Ainne Cortes (President), Denny Lu (Vice President), Micaela Ruiz (Secretary), Angela Banda (Historian), and Andrew Carrillo (Parliamentarian) ‐ at the Fall Leadership Conference. Not only were our Regional Officers elected, but there were lots of activities for the Gulf Coast Region HOSA members including HOSA Bowl and Extemporaneous Health Poster simulated competitions. Soon after, the Regional Officers went to FLDA where they learned a lot about leadership and had many opportunities for networking. They learned so much that some of our middle school members even brought back the leadership skills they learned to their school pep rally. A few months later we had our Regional Leadership Conference where a guest speaker from the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation informed members about ways to help children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Everyone was so moved by the guest speaker that some students took it into their own hands to raise money for this foundation by creating a Penny Wars competition in their own school. Recently we had members that attended the State Leadership Conference. There was a total of 25 students from the Gulf Coast Region that placed in the top 5 of their event. This included 8 middle school students, 12 secondary students, and 5 postsecondary students. We would like to congratulate everyone who competed at the State Leadership Conference. We would also like to wish the best of luck to those who will be competing at the International Leadership Conference in Orlando.

Florida HOSA greatly appreciates the time and effort each advisor puts forth every year to see our members succeed. Indeed, Florida HOSA would not be one of the leading State Associations it is today without its talented and caring advisors. Because our members also recognize the impact advisors have on students’ lives, many of them nominated their advisors for these awards. While each Florida HOSA advisor is certainly deserving, our Outstanding Advisors this year are:
Thank you for all that you do!
