• “The author writes with a sympathetic tone…the valley itself is closed off from the world through the fog. This mirrors Elisa and shares the author’s sentiments towards her life”

• Steinbeck writes with feelings of nostalgia. His description of the simple farm life brings this tone out. The detail to the gardens and valley demonstrate his longing for his past experience on a farm.

• Ellison’s uses a tone of disgust seen in his description of the audience and their action in “The Battle Royal.” The audience is seen chasing the women and assaulting her while, Ellison uses terms like “fat fingers” to describe those reaching out to grope the young lady.

• Ellison writes with a tone of embarrassment seen in his portrayal of the narrator. Ellison shows his embarrassment by bringing to light how the narrator’s speech can not bring about change. While the narrator attempts to “cast down his bucket where he is” Ellison demonstrates that this is not enough. This is shown when the narrator is first sentenced to beatings and torture, which take away from the speech he attempts to deliver.

Ellison and Joyce both create oppressed characters, but use a different tone to emphasize their character’s struggle.

Ellison’s narrator is described in an ashamed tone. The narrator’s action is that of a compliant African-American rather than a man voicing his beliefs.

The Narrator accidently slips in his speech saying, “social equality”, but quickly withdraws his true feelings to not shake the status quo and provoke the audience. This slip of the tongue shows the authors ashamed tone through scrambling of the character to correct his actions.
