The Roots of Tyler Black

Tyler currently sits as the University of Guelph’s NCC for the 2014-15 school year. At Guelph, the NCC holds the position of Vice President of Communications (VP-C) on the Interhall Council (IHC) Central Executive Board; remaining in constant contact with the RHA and the school’s other external organizations to advocate on behalf of the 5000 Residence students at the Universi-ty. From receiving his first “Ducky Award” at his very first ORHA (Ontario Residence Hall Association) conference in 2013, it was clear to the rest of the delegation that the quiet, shy first year was coming out of his shell to be a brilliant student leader. After this conference, he proceeded to get involved with Interhall Council as a Hall President for the 2013-14 school year; leading a hall of six hundred students to a first place win at the annual Pep Rally, starting new initiatives, and assisting and running in new pro-grams throughout the year. By the time he was elected to be VP-Communications and NCC, he had already attended a NACURH and GLACURH conference respectively, while sitting as one of the co-chairs on the Conference Team for ORHA 2014. Once elect-ed as NCC, he proceeded to lead enthusiastic and rather spirited Guelph delegates to NACURH and GLACURH; bringing a variety of first year students and experienced student leaders that still wished to grow. Through his passion, dedication and drive to his roll and his RHA, Tyler has re-vamped the way Guelph attends conferences, as well as the definition of the word “advocacy”. By changing the delegate selection process to prioritize first year, first time dele-gates, he ensured that students who were just coming out of their shells in their first couple months of post-secondary education would have the courage and motivation to grow into the student leaders he knew they could be. His fresh ideas for advertising have promoted election times for the RHA, bringing in approxi-mately 30 members (half the organization) by October. The way he goes above and beyond his duties while still remembering to be a student first is highly respectable, and his role as a student lead-er on the Guelph campus is admired by many.

In addition to NCC duties, Tyler is also responsible for:

Promoting communication, cooperation and interaction between the Central Executive, Hall Executives and Hall Council members.

Representing IHC and all residence students on the Central Student Associa-tion (CSA) Board of Directors.

Coordinating all advertising throughout residence for campus-wide initia-tives through postering, social media and monthly emails to the residence population.

Forming and chairing the Advertising Committee, which is responsible for the promotion of IHC events and Public Relations support in the Residence Halls.

Supporting the IHC Public Relations Officers in their positions and teaching them effective advertising techniques.

Organizing and running the campus-wide Fall Leadership Interhall Confer-ence, as well as the Winter Leadership Conference in the event that ORHA does not occur.

Acting as a student advisor of the Guelph Residence Recognition Program (GRRP).

The Central Executive also participates in the Hall Mentor Program in which they act as a resource to a group of Residence Halls that work closely together. Tyler is currently the East Residence and East Village Hall Mentor. He started working with the two initial East Residence executives to develop a plan to run their Orien-tation events shorthanded after they were elected in March and April 2014. In Sep-tember, he ran Orientation events for Village as there were no IHC members at the time and acted as the IHC liaison for RLS members and students until Fall elections occurred. As new first year students were elected into the executive positions, he sat down with them all and worked very closely to transition them into their roles, gradually backing away as they be-came more confident in their positions. The East Residence and Village IHC members have grown to respect and appreciate Tyler and all of his contributions, from attending Hall Council meetings, to his constant availability for one-on-one support,

to planning for the long-term success of their area of campus.

Duties of the NCC

In his role as NCC, Tyler is responsible for the following:

Facilitating Guelph membership with the Ontario Residence Hall Association (ORHA) and GLACURH/NACURH.

Maintaining regular and necessary correspondence on a provincial, national and international level with the affiliated organizations.

Informing IHC members of all updates and pertinent information received from the organizations.

Attending corporate business meetings at the provincial, national and international levels as the University of Guelph official representa-tive.

Forming delegations, coordinating registration and transportation of delegates to ensure attendance at all ORHA, GLACURH and NACURH conferences.

Organizing and constructing a roll call, display and/or banner to be presented at conferences where applicable that will reflect IHC, the University of Guelph and the theme of the conference.

Ensuring all membership dues are paid and registration forms are sent in on time

Organizing and submitting research contributions on current school activities or policies to the NACURH and ORHA Resource File Index (RFI).

The Fruits of his Labour: Conference Life

The Fall Leadership Interhall Conference is a one-day leadership con-ference for Residence students, and is one of the VP-C’s biggest responsi-bilities. FLIC 2014 focused on “leaving your legacy,” and Tyler chose to use the theme of Comic Con as a way to frame this idea in a relatable way to students. Every Residence Hall assembled a delegation, decided on a sub-theme for their Hall and incorporated it into their Displays and Banners. They were also assigned a task in which they had to show-case a superpower in their Roll Calls. All twelve Residence Halls attended and jumped right into their themes- Opening Ceremonies had The Avengers sitting in the same room as the Game of Thrones cast, Elsa, Ghostbusters and The Walking Dead, to name a few. Delegations consisted of the Hall executives, general resi-dence students, as well as RAs. Having a large Residence Life Staff (RLS) presence at FLICmic Con was a huge accomplishment, as strong collaboration and representation has been a goal that Student Housing as a whole has been working towards over the past few years. Tyler reached out through the Residence Programming Coordinator and was able to send an email to all of RLS about attending and submitting programs to run at the conference. The programs selected to be presented at FLIC were of a very high caliber. Tyler encouraged delegates that attended GLACURH and/or NACURH 2014 to get involved and they presented several programs they either presented or attended and it was wonderful to see them sharing their skills and knowledge obtained at external conferences directly with Guelph residence students. Tyler also reached out to other Guelph student organizations to see if they wished to contribute ses-sions. The keynote speaker was Guelph’s own Robert Routledge, Acting Manager of the Centre for New Students and former Ori-entation Coordinator, who spoke about his own pathway into Student Affairs and encouraged delegates to think of what they personally could do to “leave their legacy” at the University of Guelph. Overall, the Conference was a huge success- students had the opportunity to connect with others from all across campus who they may have never met otherwise, they learned about involvement opportunities in residence as well as at Guelph as a whole, and they all left inspired to start leaving their own legacy. Tyler was the one who flawlessly coordinated the conference and made all these opportunities possible.

The Winter Leadership Conference provides another opportunity

for Residence students to learn and grow, and Tyler’s extensive

planning process was no exception. Due to uncertainty with On-

tario’s annual regional conference, ORHA, and high interest lev-

els from FLIC delegates as well as students who were unable to

attend, Tyler began planning the Winter Leadership Conference

(WLC) in early January. He decided to make the theme of the

conference “The Next Step” as it falls during the beginning of

March, a pivotal time in the semester when students begin think-

ing about what opportunities they will pursue in their next school

year. In an effort to provide an opportunity for IHC members to

get involved from a different perspective, Tyler created a WLC

planning committee. He had all of the knowledge and tools to do

it himself, but instead he used his experience to let others take the

lead. The WLC planning committee has served as a great transi-

tion for the VP-C - elect, as she had the opportunity to experience

firsthand how to coordinate the conference, which will allow her

to plan the 2015 and 2016 conferences with ease.

Pollinating the Student Leader Garden: New Initiatives and Transitioning Tools

Agents of C.E.N.T.R.A.L. is a student mentorship program that Tyler introduced to the E-Board in September 2014. He based the idea on a program he and the VP-Internal learned about from the University of Northern Colorado at NACURH 2014. This program allowed current IHC mem-bers considering a Central E-Board position for the following year to apply to shadow the current members to learn more about what their positions entailed. Every member had at least one person apply to shadow their position, and this allowed them to develop a better understanding of what their responsibilities would be and how much of a commitment the role required. After spending the Fall semester shadowing the E-Board, 4 of the 6 incoming members for the 2015-16 school year now have a more extensive understanding of their future positions, thus making future tran-sitioning easier for them. The success of this program is due to the hard work that Tyler put into developing the application and timelines for it, and it is definitely going to be continued in future years. “Implementing Agents of C.E.N.T.R.A.L. is one of the best things our E“Implementing Agents of C.E.N.T.R.A.L. is one of the best things our E“Implementing Agents of C.E.N.T.R.A.L. is one of the best things our E---Board has done this year. Along with his RHA position, Tyler is also heavily involved with the on-campus community. Using his two years of knowledge and leadership experience he obtained as a member of Interhall Council, Tyler successfully applied for a position on Guelph’s Orientation Team. The O-Team consists of a group of four people and the IHC President that plan and coordinate Guelph’s Orientation Week in September. While this week begins on first year move in day at the begin-ning of the school year, the position begins in January with extensive training and team building before a summer of full-time commitment to the job. Tyler has jumped right into the position in working well with his supervisors and other team members to select Orientation Team Leaders to help organize all the volunteers; as well as new recruitment strategies to rally a greater number of Orientation Volunteers needed to make the week run smoothly. Along with the rest of the team, Tyler will be attending an annual regional conference presented by the National Orientation Direc-tor’s Association (NODA) to connect with other schools in a new leader-ship capacity. This conference will build upon his pre-existing experience

as a student leader , and his previous experience at conferences as Guelph’s NCC will be beneficial in his ability to network with various individuals and make connections to allow him to be successful in his new position.

Tyler is also involved outside Residence Life and within his College Government as the treasurer on the Toxicology Student

Association- a branch of the College of Physical Sciences. Through this, he keeps track of all the program club’s finances,

participates in executive meetings, and gets involved in the College’s events. Through this, he has taken leadership skills

learned through his experience on Interhall Council and applied them to another branch of University student involvement

to improve the club’s finances and provide a fresh perspective and outlook on how the club is ran.

The Guelph Residence Recognition Program

The Guelph Residence Recognition Program (GRRP) is the first step toward a more established NRHH chapter at the Uni-

versity of Guelph. Tyler oversees the Coordinator of the program to make sure all is running smoothly. Over the past year,

Tyler has yet to miss a meeting despite the fact that he does not have a vote. He is constantly striving to recognize those

around him and embodies the values of the program as well as lives them in everyday life.

The NC-Seeds: International Conference Involvement No Frills 2014 There was no one formally in the NCC position prior to Tyler being elected, and this required him to put in additional effort in order to transition into his role effectively. The current E-Board and Advisor did not have any formal GLACURH boardroom experience, so he had a lot to learn. Tyler was able to teach himself what being an NCC entailed and despite attending No Frills 2014 without an out-going NCC to show him the ropes, he was able to actively participate in discussions while learning parlia-mentary procedure. He engaged in discussions with the incoming Director about what the region could do to better support Ontar-io schools as Guelph was the only one that attended No Frills. In addition, Tyler spoke with the incoming AD-NRHH about steps that Guelph would have to take to work towards turning the current NRHH chapter into a fully functional and established organization in residence.

NACURH 2014 Tyler began preparations for NACURH shortly after returning to Guelph from No Frills. The delegation selection pro-cess for NACURH conferences at Guelph prioritizes returning delegates, but is still open and welcome to any residence

student that wishes to become involved in a student leadership position. Potential delegates were required to submit an application stating what they would take away from the confer-ence, as well as goals for their positions and how attending NACURH would assist in achieving them. Tyler’s review of the applications ensured that delegates were attending with the right mindset- goals for positional and personal growth, networking, learning from and about other school RHA’s, and so forth. The delegation consisted of mostly re-turning delegates whom Tyler knew were experienced leaders in residence, and he encour-aged them to use their experiences to create or re-adapt programs to present. This chal-lenged them to expand their horizons and add a new dimension to their conference experi-ence. NACURH 2014 was the first time in recent memory that Guelph had programs accept-ed to be presented at the NACURH level - let alone three from a delegation of six individu-als. Tyler worked with the delegates to ensure they thoroughly prepared their sessions in the weeks leading up to the conference, and he also assisted with running one when he was not in the NCC boardroom. Through Tyler’s support and encouragement, all 3 programs were successful, and one delegate even received the honour of running a Top Program! Tyler divided the 5 delegates into two separate sub-committees to work on the banner and the display. This allowed more focalized attention to both these areas, and gave every delegate a chance to contribute to preparation for the conference. This was integral to the delegation coming together and feeling comfortable with each other before attending a conference of this

magnitude. The banner subcommittee’s hard work even led to the Guelph placing in the Top 10 for Large School Banner. For his dedication to the region and in recognition of his constant work and communication with the RBD about ways to make the GLACURH experience more beneficial for Canadian schools, Tyler received the Golden MOWII Pin at NACURH 2014!

6

Tyler has taken full advantage of the resources that GLACURH has to of-fer its member schools, and proposed to adopt some of their procedures and implement them at the University of Guelph. In previous years, the consti-tutional review process has been long and confusing for members to follow along as amendments would be discussed. Tyler suggested to the VP-Internal that she could adopt the GLACURH procedure for presenting new amendments by formatting them the way GLACURH legislation is pre-sented. During mid-year constitutional review, Tyler used this process to propose that Pro/Con be introduced into the Central Executive Board elec-tion procedure. This amendment passed and was implemented at elections for the 2015-16 E-Board in early February. Pro/Con was well received by the voting members present as it allowed them the opportunity to critically evaluate every candidate’s presentation, regardless if they were running opposed or not, to ensure that the best possible candidate was elected.

GLACURH 2014 The GLACURH delegation consisted of mainly first time delegates with a few returners, creating a perfect mix to help the new delegates adjust to the conference atmosphere. He divided the large delegation into banner, display and roll call sub-

committees to ensure that every member of the delegation had as large of a contri-bution as possible. The delegation was encouraged to submit multiple programs to run. Five programs were selected, and as with NACURH, one of the Top 10 Pro-grams was a Guelph program. The University of Guelph won Best Roll Call at GLACURH 2012 and 2013, a fact that Tyler was incredibly aware of as he had helped contribute to the 2013 success. By creating the separate subcommittees, the delegates were able to pay extra attention to ensure the roll call was of the highest possible quality. Guelph delegates were thrilled to accept the Best Roll Call for Large School award on behalf of the University of Guelph for the third year in a row at Closing Ceremonies. Tyler is well aware of the challenges Ontario schools face that the American schools in the region do not, and in his role as NCC he has not been afraid to stand up as the main Canadian voice in the boardroom. Guelph shares a strong bond with Brock University in Ontario, and Tyler made it a point to reach out to the Brock NCC to catch him up on proposed legislation. They discussed at length the effect the legislation would have on Ontario schools and upon realizing that the province would not be receiving the support it needed, Tyler spoke up in the NCC boardroom and proposed an amendment that would benefit all schools equally, re-gardless of nationality. While the amendment did not get passed, standing up for his province to explain his perspective and ensuring that his voice was heard was a

huge milestone for Tyler. This critical moment that sparked heated discussion in the GLACURH boardroom shows just how fast the evolUtion from quiet, unsure NCC-elect at No Frills 2014 into a confident representative of Canada occurred.

Dear GLACURH,

It is a great pleasure for me to write this letter of support for Tyler Black. In my capacity as a Residence Hall Advisor at the

University of Guelph, I have come to know Tyler quite well on both a personal and professional level. I can attest to his

strong leadership skills and how they have contributed to a number of valuable learning experiences for him, as well as for

the student body at large.

My role in Residence Life provides me with the opportunity to work with countless numbers of dedicated, motivated and

passionate student leaders. Every so often I am fortunate enough to work with a student leader that goes above and beyond

in their roll to better support their peers, residence students and the University as a whole. Tyler Black the NCC for the Uni-

versity of Guelph is this type of leader. Tyler has consistently surpassed my expectations and is a grounding presence

amongst the Interhall Council executive at the University of Guelph.

On his home campus, Tyler has been integral in the success of Interhall Council as an organization. Tyler has planned and led

the implementation of two separate conferences on our campus geared towards residence students and leadership devel-

opment. Tyler has also played a role in constitutional amendments that steer the organization in a more student oriented

and fiscally responsible direction.

At the GLACURH level, Tyler has recruited, prepared and organized a large delegation who attended GLACURH 2014. Tyler

has tirelessly fought for what he believes is best for the University of Guelph at the GLACURH level and is not afraid to voice

his opinions and counter legislation that does not best serve our institution and its residence students.

Tyler is a strong leader and a role model for all Interhall Council members. He is proud to be a member of this organization

and strives every day to represent himself, the organization and the University the best he can. Tyler is an outstanding NCC

and his dedication, commitment and drive should be recognized and celebrated.

Thank You for your consideration. I would be happy to provide further support at your convenience.

Sincerely,

Jason Verhoeve
