Discovering my Best Self in Leadership Institute by Grace
To see more blog posts by teens involved in Youth Ministry & Confirmation Prep, check out: https://gspyouth.blog
As a senior, this is my second year being a part of the Leadership Institute here at Good Shepherd Parish. All of the time that I have gotten to spend a part of this group has allowed me to learn so much and make so many new friendships. Since our parish has people from multiple towns, Leadership acted as a catalyst for those inter-town friendships to form and some of my closest friends are now from another town.
The group of friends that has formed has become a safe space in which we all feel we can be open towards one another since we have talked about the deep stuff in our lives. Having people that you feel like you can talk to about absolutely anything is the type of environment that Leadership has cre-ated not only for me but so many others.
Leadership has also allowed for me over the past two years to become much more involved in what is going on at church and all of the different events that I can go to or volunteer at. This past year I was able to be a leader on all of the retreats that we hosted with our youth ministry program. Getting to lead small groups and activities allowed me to gain so many new skills that I most likely other-wise wouldn’t have gotten.
Leadership Institute has taught me courage. It takes a lot of courage to talk to a group of people and tell them what they should do (such as instructions for games and activities) or how to follow what is happening. I was also able to give my witness talk a few times which takes even more courage. To sit in front of about 40 or more people and tell them about the hardest times in your life takes a tre-mendous amount of courage and, because of Leadership, I had that opportunity to grow and do that.
Most importantly, Leadership has further connected me with God, I can find myself more easily spend-ing more of my free time in a positive way growing my relationship with God. Overall, leadership has truly allowed for the best version of me to come out and thrive in a welcom-ing community of teens that all have similar visions.
The time I have gotten to spend a part of this group has been great, and I am sad that it is almost over but I know that the friendships that it has facilitated will last.

In 1955, a husband and wife songwriting team attended a youth re-treat in California. They put together a song that captured their hopes for a better, more peaceful world. The song quickly spread around the world and has been sung by many famous singers and entertainers. It’s been sung in church, at rallies and in bathroom showers all over the country! The song was “Let There Be Peace on Earth, And Let it Begin With Me.”
Jesus gives His disciples a mission and directions how to achieve it. They go to all the towns He will visit and pre-pare the people to hear His message. There is urgency to the work: they are not to carry anything that will de-lay them, nor should they fuss about what they eat or where they stay. Announce the reign of God and move on. The conversion of each town started with the work and example of the disciples.
We each have our own personal mission, given in baptism and that unfolds over time. Some are called to reli-gious life, others to marriage, some to parenthood, others to social service or teaching or caring for the sick. Whatever our mission, the Lord calls us to it with a sense of urgency and importance. Your good work and ex-ample will announce the reign of God is at hand. Let it begin with you! ~James Gaffney, © 2010 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing [email protected]

The photo of a father and his toddler daughter face down after drowning in an attempt to enter the USA by crossing the Rio Grande added yet another tug to the global heartstrings. “Why would parents even try taking babies and toddlers on such dangerous journeys – whether toward the USA or across the Mediterranean in flimsy boats toward Greece or Italy?” some people wondered. This snapshot of a global immigration crisis re-minds us that the Biblical landscape is marked by the geography of hope. Once expelled from the paradise of Eden humans are constantly driven to find that new place in which they can live together in what the Bible calls shalom, in peace, prosperity, justice, freedom from war, illness, and hunger.
One powerful answer to the question of where to locate hope is represented in today’s reading from Isa 66:10-14. Jerusalem will be transformed into that global expression of prosperity, justice, and peace. Of course, prophets like Isaiah craft their visions in poetry, not the sober statistics of UN reports. To appreciate the poet-ry, notice that God’s people, those who love Jerusalem are being encouraged to exchange their present state of mourning for rejoicing.
Isaiah imagines God as a nursing mother with more milk than her eagerly nursing infants could possible drink, as the mother playing with those toddlers or comforting them in their childhood disasters. Added to that the riv-er is not the deadly torrent like the Rio Grande but an image of prosperity, the “wealth of nations”. (Adam Smith owes the title of his economics classic to Isaiah.) Contrast the plight of refugee mothers whose children are dying because they have no milk, of a mother and small children dying in the desert, of those who lost all belonging in the sea. Isaiah’s poetic vision of a mothering God extended hope to those mourning loss.
Would Isaiah’s phrase, “in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort”, elicit anything but a skeptical eye-roll from people today? We know that the crowd which escorted Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday were expecting that he would turn Isaiah’s poetry into reality. The healing powers that Jesus unleashed during his ministry even had his followers thinking that the forces of evil were on their way out (Lk 10:17-20). Jesus cautions against rejoicing in such victories, “…rejoice because your names are written in heaven (v. 20). “The Kingdom of God is at hand for you” relocated hope from a place to hearts of believers everywhere.
