GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) “Many moons ago,” Monsignor Marc Caron inquired about the

small pipe organ in Notre Dame Church in Saco. If he could get

funding, he hoped we could give the instrument to Prince of Peace

Parish in Lewiston for use in the underground chapel that seats

about 225 people in the Basilica of SS. Peter & Paul. Fortunately,

Father Maurice Morin’s estate made the refurbishment possible.

After repairs were made and enhancements added, Msgr. Caron invited interest-

ed parishioners and I to join Fr. Morin’s family for a dedication ceremony during

Saturday evening Mass on June 28. The liturgy was attended by some 200 Basil-

ica parishioners with a full contingent of a Knights of Columbus Honor Guard

(including one of our own from Biddeford). The Mass was celebrated entirely in

French -- homily and music included; the cantor was a little girl with a remarka-

ble voice! After the homily, ministers approached a plaque marking the event; it

was unveiled, and Msgr. Caron imparted the dedication prayer. From that point,

the music in the liturgy was accompanied by the “new” organ which sounded

absolutely terrific! Near the conclusion of Mass, I spoke briefly, noting Fr.

Morin’s ministry at St. André and St. Joseph. I recalled that the Morin family

had been involved in church music for many years, including Fr. Morin’s father

who sang at funerals for many years in the Lewiston area. Many of the Morins

were parishioners of mine in Lewiston, so we enjoyed a little reunion after Mass.

(2) Assignment of Priest: Effective August 8, Fr. Paul Murray is appointed

residential care chaplain for senior residential care institutions located in Lewis-

ton and Auburn. He will also provide coverage for emergencies at St. Mary’s

Regional Medical Center and Central Maine Medical Center, and assist in Im-

maculate Heart of Mary Parish (Auburn/Turner). Currently, Father Murray

serves as parochial vicar in the Dexter/Milo/Dover-Foxcroft/Pittsfield cluster. (3)

Thank you of the Week: to parishioners who volunteer as altar servers for our

weekend and weekday liturgies – adults and children alike. I also appreciate the

commitment required of the parents of these children. Thank you!

Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne:

A verse on a tombstone read as follows:

“Remember man as you pass by,

As you are now, so once was I,

As I am now, some day you’ll be,

Prepare yourself to follow me.”

Below the verse, someone had written the following:

“To follow you I’m not content

Until I find which way you went.” –Paul Meysing

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH www.goodshepherdparish.us July 27, 2014

A special message for summer visitors:

Welcome to Good Shepherd Parish, which con-

sists of 4 churches: Most Holy Trinity in Saco,

Saint Joseph in Biddeford, St. Margaret in Old

Orchard Beach and St. Philip in Lyman. We also

have two summer chapels, St. Brendan in

Biddeford Pool and St. Luke in Old Orchard

Beach. You may have noticed that St. Luke is not

open this summer because it is in need of a new

roof and ventilation system. Our parish owns 15

properties, 6 of which are listed for sale at this

time. All our properties are in need of improve-

ments aimed at increasing the useful life of a

building or adding to its value. These projects

result in considerable financial stress for the

parish. In particular, the cost of repairing the roof

and ventilation system in St. Luke is about $50-

60,000. Therefore, we have begun a capital fund

campaign to help pay for repairing the roof and

ventilation system. If you enjoy worshiping at St.

Luke in the summer months and would like to

help us raise funds for this purpose, you may send

a check to the parish office or go to the parish

website at www.GoodShepherdParish.us and

click “Online Giving,” where you will find a

donation opportunity for St. Luke Chapel; you

may also contact our finance coordinator, David

Gadbois, at the parish office. Thank you for your

consideration. Although our buildings are of great

concern, even greater is our mission of bringing

the gospel of Christ to our parishioners and to all

around us. There is good news in that regard.

From a global perspective, we have Pope Francis

admired throughout the world. The appointment

of Bishop Robert Deeley as the new Bishop of

Portland in February has been an exciting and

positive experience. In early April, a parish mis-

sion led by Fr. Larry Richards (well known on

Catholic Radio) attracted over 1100 people to

attend each of the four evenings. The mission had

a strong spiritual impact on those who attended

and continues to influence the lives of many

parishioners. I find in these combined experiences

signs of faith and hope for the Catholic Church in

Maine and for our parish in particular. We appre-

ciate the prayerful support of Catholics who visit

us from elsewhere; your presence enlivens us

during the summer months. May you have an

enjoyable, restful & peaceful vacation in Maine!

St. James School staff partners with parents, parishioners, and our community to provide students with opportunities to become faith-filled Catholics, creative and critical thinkers, life-long learners, and confident contributors to the Church and society.

JULY 27, 2014

Saint James School was well represented

in the La Kermesse parade. This year,

Maine Catholic schools will be celebrating

their 150th anniversary in Maine. Biddeford

and Saco have had several area Catholic schools, of which Saint James School is a combination, and is the

last remaining one. We celebrate in this rich history. It is important

that Saint James School remains here to teach the next generation

of children the values based education that develops the whole

child. Enrollment is strong for next year but there are still open-

ings, so spread the word! Not only do students excel academically

but they also develop socially and spiritually. If you have not given

Saint James School a serious look, you should call or stop by for a

tour to see what we can offer your child or grandchild. Please

spread the word of Saint James School to perspective families!

Maybe your grandchild would consider Saint James School with some support; maybe your neighbor would consider Saint James

School with a positive word; maybe your teammate would consid-

er Saint James School with a recommendation. You never know

what the little push might be, so help out the last remaining Catho-

lic School and spread the word! The office is open every Tuesday

and Thursday from 9-12 and other times, by appointment.

COMPANIONS ACROSS GOOD SHEPHERD: Communion to the sick and elderly is a unique and extremely

important ministry within our parish. We would like to thank all

of you who are bringing the Eucharist to our parishioners who are

unable to attend Mass on a regular basis, and to invite anyone

who is considering this ministry to contact us.

Good Shepherd is in the process of building a new program called

Companions across Good Shepherd. This ministry is devoted to

alleviating what Mother Theresa called “the terrible poverty of

loneliness” by providing weekly visits to the elderly or home-

bound in our parish. The purpose of this ministry is to reach out

to those within our own parish who need just a little time visiting

with someone. Your role as a companion would be to lend a

friendly ear. You can serve as little or as much as you would like.

If you feel that you are being called and are interested in volun-

teering in either one of these programs, Communion to the sick or

homebound or Companions across Good Shepherd, or would like

further information, please contact either Liz Williams or Deacon

Kevin at the Good Shepherd office 282-3321.
