Our Stewardship Theme this fall at Good Shepherd is:

Good Shepherd Giving: Built on a Firm Foundation,

Embracing an Exciting Future!

As we commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, and over 60 years of life here at Good Shepherd, we celebrate the firm foundation on which our music, worship, ministry, fellowship, and service are built. But as our world, our culture, the whole Christian church, and our congregation are con-stantly changing, we are also, in faith, embracing the exciting future that God has in store for us.

All of the good things that have happened here at Good Shepherd, and all of the good things that will happen here in the future, happen because of, and only because of, your faithful and generous giving. So once again this fall, we will humbly and boldly ask for your financial gifts to support, maintain, and grow the ministry of our congregation.

Pledge cards will be mailed out the week of October 8th. When you receive your card, please prayerfully consider how much you can give to help shape Good Shepherd’s future with your financial gifts. Thank you !

Grubbiness is next to Godliness! St. Grubby’s Day is Sunday, October 29th!

Wear your grubby jeans and sweat-shirts to worship and stay for our annual fall St. Grubby’s Day! We will clean, vacuum, dust, rake, wash windows, and do other fall cleaning and maintenance tasks to care for our church property, both

inside and out.

Plan on staying to help between services or after our 10:00 am service. Cleaning supplies are provided but it helps if you bring rakes, leaf blowers, stepladders (for window cleaning), dust rags, brooms, and vacuum cleaners , or any handy gadget that makes cleaning fun or easy!

Pastor Loren and prepare a light brunch of pancakes and bacon to help you keep your energy up! Thank you for the one or two hours you give to help make Good Shepherd shine!

Introducing…..

A new Sunday Morning Education Hour

….. for 5 weeks only!

LIVING OUT OUR

LUTHERAN FAITH

SUNDAYS, OCTOBER 1 - 8 - 15 - 22 - 29

9:00 am to 9:40 a.m.

(before our 10:00 a.m. worship service,

with time for a coffee break in-between)

As we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of our

Lutheran Reformation this fall, we will use a short

resource book entitled “Baptized, We Live:

Lutheranism As a Way of Life,” by Daniel Erlander,

to explore and examine some key parts of Luther’s

theology and faith, and the implications these teach-

ings have for us still today as we try to live out our

Lutheran faith in our daily lives.

This Sunday morning study is open

to anyone and everyone. There is no cost!

The coffee will be on! So come, and enjoy the company,

and grow in your faith!

Thank You

• To Teresa Koch, Kristin Davis, and the crew who set up, prepared, cooked, cleaned up, and entertained the kids at our annual Rally Day picnic on September 10th.

• To Sandy Salwei for her faithful care of our beautiful front garden; To Tom Frahm for his weekly mowing of our church lawns, and to Brad Jans for his regular trimming of our front ditch and parking lot edges.

• To everyone at Good Shepherd who volunteers to make this congregation such a special place!

Financial Update

THANK YOU to everyone for your generous giving!

Good Shepherd’s actual expenses through the end of August were $272,286.27 with the expenses budgeted at $303,200.00. This means our expenses were at 89.81% of our budget through the end of the summer.

Our actual income through the end of August was at $269,530.62, with income budgeted at $303,200.00, mean-ing our income was at 88.90% of expected income.

So we are in a solid financial situation as we begin the fall schedule and enter the final quarter of the calendar year. We began our calendar/fiscal year on January 1, 2017, with $25,888.27 in our checking account. As of the end of August, we still had $23,132.62 in checking as we start the tradition-ally stronger giving months of fall.

Statements that reflect your giving through the end of September will be mailed out in early/mid October, so if you have questions or note errors on your statement, please contact Ginny in the office at 952-471-8433 and the necessary corrections will be made. If you are current with your giving, thank you so much! If you see from your state-ment that you are behind with your 2017 pledge and you can catch up this fall, we would appreciate that!

We’ve begun the fall in great financial shape because of your faithful giving throughout the summer!

Now let’s finish strong!!! Thank you!

New Member Sunday - October 15th

We have scheduled our Good Shepherd New Member Days for Sunday, October 15, 2017, and Wednesday, October 25. We will be receiving and welcoming New Members on these dates

New Good Shepherd Church Directory Coming Soon!

We have exciting news to share! We are in the process of creating an updated church directory. Our church has changed over the years by growing in numbers, and in the many ways we communicate. We have a team effort going with a directory committee and the church office to create a directory that can be printed for purchase, or accessed online. Thankfully, our new church office software is able to easily create this directory.

We have two simple requests from our members: 1. Please verify and/or update your contact information (address, phone numbers and emails). 2. Provide your own family photo (landscape orientation only). These can both be done electronically by visiting goodshepherdmn.org/directory or at designated worship days that we will schedule in October, where a committee member will update your contact information with you. Note - There will be no costly formal photography sessions . If you need a picture taken, our committee would be happy to help you with that. We are very excited to provide our members with an updated directory and our church office is thrilled with the chance to update their records!

More information will be coming soon, so stay tuned!

SECRETARY’S REPORT -- A motion was made by Blake Smith, seconded by Cheryl Morrissey to approve the sec-

retary’s report. Motion passed.

Dear Members and Friends of Good Shepherd,

Once again this fall, we will have our Good Shepherd Stewardship Emphasis,

and I will boldly ask you for your financial gifts to support the ministry of our

congregation. As I have said in the past, this is one of the hardest and most uncomfortable

things for me to do - to ask for money! Yet, it is also one of the most important things that I do

as a pastor. Biblical scholars will point out that Jesus taught more lessons and told more parables

about money and our relationship to it than he did about faith! So here I go again…..

Our Stewardship Theme this fall is “GIVING at GOOD SHEPHERD:

BUILT on a FIRM FOUNDATION, EMBRACING an EXCITING FUTURE!

Our congregation, along with the whole Christian Church on earth, is built first and foremost on the firm

foundation of Jesus Christ. As we sing in an old, traditional, familiar hymn, “On Christ, the solid rock, I

stand!” This fall, as we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, we also recognize

and remember that our faith is built on the firm foundation of the Lutheran proclamation that we are saved

by God’s grace alone. And as we recall and remember our how history here at Good Shepherd, we also know

that we stand on the firm foundation of over 60 years of ministry, praise and worship, fellowship and service.

And because we stand on these firm foundations, we can look to an unknown future with excitement and hope!

Our world is constantly changing! Our culture in our country is constantly changing. The whole Christian

church, and our Lutheran congregations, are constantly changing. In fact, it is a critical time for the Christian

Church and for our Lutheran faith, as a recent article noted that over 85% of all Lutheran congregations are

declining at this time.

But at Good Shepherd, we are embracing an exciting future because we have built a firm foundation.

Our choirs and bands, and our strong tradition of high quality praise and worship are a critical core in our

congregation. We have an exciting, exploding youth ministry, and we are strengthening our Sunday School

and have added a Wednesday evening Kid’s Club for our children. We have some wonderful fellowship

events for our families and for our adults. And we are known for our strong service and our generosity in

our community and beyond. We are moving forward in faith, and it is exciting!

But all of our wonderful and powerful ministry happens here, and ONLY happens here, because of your

generous and faithful giving! Our budget this year (2017) is $454,800.00, and $429,000.00 of that amount,

or 94.33% of our budget, comes from the gifts of our congregational members and friends! (The rest comes

from Shoreline rent.)

So once again this fall, I am both boldly and

humbly asking for your help, for your financial

gifts to keep our ministry at Good Shepherd -

built on a firm foundation - moving forward as we

embrace the exciting future that God has in store

for us! If you are not giving to Good Shepherd

at all at this time, or not giving on a regular basis,

I hope you will prayerfully consider making a

weekly pledge for 2018. If you are already giving,

I thank you from the bottom of my surgically re-

paired heart and ask you to consider increasing or

growing a step in your giving. With everyone’s

generous help, with everyone all-in, we can contin-

ue to strengthen our firm foundation of ministry at

Good Shepherd and continue to be a blessing to

our members and our communities as we embrace

God’s exciting future for us.
