PASTOR’S CORNER
A friend of mine recollects the most memorable Christmas from her past: My sister and I lived with our mother. We were poor as poor can be, and Mom suffered from tuberculosis. With Christmas fast
approaching, we had no expectations for Christmas celebrations and presents. When we awoke on Christmas morning, our hearts filled with joy when we received some fruit, and each of us were given one set of new clothes for our baby dolls. In her sickened condition, Mom managed to sew the small sets of clothing. We experienced joy that morning, and also learned a lesson about gifts filled with love.”
Although Christmas is a season of hope, love, peace and joy, we are also reminded that the “Grinch” is lurking around. The hectic pace and stressors can easily lead anyone into the “Bah Humbug” mentality. Zachariah baulked at the Angels announcement that they were to bring John the Baptist into the world to prepare the way for the “Coming of the Lord.” Mary and Joseph had their doubts and fears about God’s design and desire for their role as instrumentalist in God’s ultimate plan of salvation for the world. Later, King Herod decided to take matters into his own hands to thwart God’s salvific plans. Remember the words from “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” As we celebrate God’s gift to us through the birth of Jesus and welcome his “coming” again and again into our lives every day, be on guard and let nothing destroy or steal the blessings of Christmas.
While sharing with a group of children one Sunday morning, we talked about the Advent wreath and the symbols on our chrismon tree. One child announced, “There is a crown on top” – how true the words. As we move slowly through the season of Advent, may we all know that there is a “Crown on Top,” and all we do in worship will point us to the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Herein is the greatest gift of love. When our experiences are grounded in the self giving love of God, our Christmas will be filled with hope, peace, love and joy. Merry Christmas Pastor Carl
