THE VOICETHE VOICE

“In the church, the primary musical instrument is the human voice, given by God to sing and proclaim the word of God.”

Principles for Worship, ELCA, Augsburg Fortress, 2002

On Friday evening, after we had spent an hour or so reflecting on our week in Washington, D. C. and drawing quilt squares for the Mission Trip quilts Linda Rabe has been making for us, we transitioned to a time of worship. A nice loaf of wheat bread and individual cups filled with grape juice … both purchased at CVS … were placed in

a window opening overlooking the city in the choir room which had just been used for a month or so as the art room for Luther Place Memorial Church’s ArtSmart Day Camp for kids in the neighborhood. When we had all reassembled in a circle for worship, Jack asked if we were going to have special music. I think I told Jack that if we’re going to have special music it would be up to the group to provide it. Which Jack heard as a cue to begin singing a Sunday School song.

The music was special all right.

We ended up singing so many songs I have no idea which one was first. I’m pretty sure we sang “This Little Light of Mine,” “The Church Song,” “I Just Wanna Be a Sheep,” “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” “Jesus Loves Me,” “The B I B L E,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” “I’ve Got Joy Down in My Heart,” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It took a little encouraging from a few of the strong singers, but pretty soon almost everyone was singing at the top of their lungs. In a room with very lively acoustics … you know … hard tile floor, high ceiling, lots of vertical hard surfaces (walls/windows).

We didn’t sing every verse or every line correctly, but overall it was a wonderful, fun, lively beginning to worship. It was a room full of life brought forth from hearts and minds that were formed in our worship space at Grace. I thought of the quote above from the ELCA statement Principles for Worship and thought also how seldom I hear a worship space so completely filled with song. Once in a Baptist church at a preaching conference in Nashville, the hymn, the space, the musical instrument, and the people came together to raise an amazing a song of praise to God. Each of those parts of any worship service needs attention to make moments like these possible.

The Hymn The hymn or song itself must be sing-able and must be presented so people can read it and

follow it. Musical notes are often helpful, even if people are not musicians. Relying on “musical notation” is helpful only for people who are trained to read music for those clues; most people can’t follow hymns that are edited with lots of those symbols. An element of sing-ability is familiarity, and by familiarity I don’t mean you hear the song on the radio ten times a day for the month that it’s popular. By familiarity I mean the song has become part of your life, because worship is part of your life. The less worship is a part of our lives, the less chance that our voices will be ready and able to give God the joyful praises he deserves on his special day. Especially when that special day is a Friday evening in a messy choir room in a church a thousand miles from home.

The Space Worship spaces full of sound-absorbing materials will also absorb the sound of singing. I’m not sure if God hears our singing before it’s absorbed into the sound absorbing materials. I’m pretty sure God hears on a whole different level. But if carpets eat all our efforts, we certainly don’t get to enjoy them. We have improved our sanctuary for singing by removing a lot of our carpet.

The Musical Instruments

Any kind of accompaniment (bands, musical instruments, singers) are there to guide us and encourage us, not to take center stage, not to drown us out. Musical instruments are not necessary for worship, but are very helpful if played with their proper purpose in mind.

The People Something about our experience together in D.C. kept us from being self-conscious about singing. Even if we sang the wrong word or note, our

A THANK YOU TO GRACE

joyful noise (racket? Hullaballoo?) was Grace: it covered up our failings, real and imagined. Something about our experience in D. C. drew us together, made us grateful and joyful in song, made us capable of prayer, and inspired us to share about how we were blessed by God. Though our experiences together taught us many new things about history and the larger church, they were not unusual experiences for members of Grace Lutheran Church: we helped take care of children, we worked in a food pantry, we worked at a homeless shelter, we enjoyed food, fun, and fellowship together. These experiences are what we are all called to do together as Christians and as members of Grace. These experiences strengthen our faith. These experiences are the reason why church isn’t really about chillin’ with squirrels in the woods. These experiences equipped us and inspired us to “sing and proclaim the word of God” and to have a whole lot of fun doing so!

Hero Central VBS 2017

“Do good! Seek peace

and go after it!”

Psalm 34:14b

A heartfelt “thank-you” is extended to all of you who helped make our week of VBS a huge success! Because of your generosity, 50 kids from Grace and 16 visitors (new and repeat!) from the Green Bay community had the opportunity to learn about five heroes from the Bible. We also learned how God made each of us a superhero: “God’s heroes have heart, courage, wisdom, hope, and power!” With the help of 25 teachers and helpers, we spent the week making hero-related craft and science projects, munching on treats made specifically for heroes and learning songs at super-hero speed. Each day, all heroes gathered for our opening and closing where we looked forward to our visits from “Flame” (our red panda puppet) and “Captain Shield”! On family night, we shared our favorite songs during worship. After we ate, a number of local heroes stopped to visit us! We were very excited to have policemen and firemen come! We were able to sit in the police car and try on handcuffs and climb on the fire truck and run under the huge hose that they sprayed! (It went across the street and into the park!) We were able to take lots of pictures and video. (Check out Grace Lutheran Church Green Bay on Facebook!) They thanked us for the Hero cookies we baked for them to take back to their stations! A fun hero also came! That was Mr. Thibby and his ice cream truck! On our closing day of VBS, we went and enjoyed time swimming and playing at Tundra Lodge! There were nearly 90 of us! Lastly, during VBS week we did extra jobs around the house to earn money for our mission offering: the Goody Triathlon. We saw a lot of super-hero heart and courage as we listened to how Kare Goodness, a phy ed teacher at Pulaski High School and member here at Grace, began this event seven years ago. If you would like to see and learn what we saw and learned, just Google “Goody Triathlon”. Amazing! It was another incredible week! Again, all of this is only possible because of members of Grace and your support of our children’s ministries programs. Thank you.

VBS THANK YOU
