GOOD NEWS
We have had four baptisms this week! Last Monday night, Jesse Allen was baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of his sins. Jesse is the son of Brian and Mary Dee Allen. He is a 10th grader at Cookeville High School. On Sunday morning, Celeste Reed responded to the Lord's invitation and was baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of her sins. Celeste is the daughter of Darren and Stephanie Reed. She is a 7th grader at White County Middle School.
After the morning worship service, Terri Mayfield requested to be bap-tized. Terri was invited to come to worship by Barbara Shiver who was also baptized a few weeks ago.
On Sunday evening after Teens 4 Christ in Sparta, Karley Gentry was baptized. Karley is the daughter of Denny and Mary Beth Gentry who have recently placed membership. Karley is an 8th grader at White Coun-ty Middle School.
The words of Scripture are just as true today as they were 2,000 years ago.
"He who believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16.16). NEW MEMBERS
We are excited to introduce Ryan and Katie Kelly as our newest members at Jefferson Avenue! Ryan and Katie have been worshiping with us for several months now. Ryan works as a lineman and Katie is a speech pathologist. Ryan's parents, Tony and Lee Ann Kelly, placed membership last week. Welcome, Ryan and Katie!
SUPER SUNDAY IS HERE!
Each year, on the first Sunday in February, we have our Super Sunday. This coming Sunday, we will hear three great lessons from Dr. Richard Hughes, former Bible professor at Pepperdine University and current scholar in residence at Lipscomb University. He will be speaking at the 9 am Bible class hour in the auditorium and will be preaching during the morning worship.
After the morning worship service, we will enjoy a catered meal in our Fel-lowship Center. All you need to bring is a dessert. Dr. Hughes will present a third lesson after the meal.
So who can you invite to join us on Sunday? Invite your family and friends and co-workers to join us!

If you ever want to know the spiritual landscape surround-ing John the Baptist’s and Jesus’ ministries, Luke 7:29-35 paints a great picture. And when all the people heard Him, even the tax col-lectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers re-jected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man has come eat-ing and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ The messages of John and Jesus landed on all kinds of soil. With open hearts and minds some received their words and produced the fruit of conviction, repentance, and submission. Others had a difficult time overcoming self-rooted obstacles. In these verses Jesus addresses this issue, especially among the spiritual leaders. The San-hedrin, the “spiritual leaders” of the Jews had already heard John the Baptist and rejected any application to-wards themselves. He was a man who lived without the trappings of the Sanhedrin eating locust, wild honey, not drinking wine, and calling people to repentance. Jesus came eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners; also calling people to repentance. Yet no matter the man or their style the message was rejected. They were like little kids playing in the marketplace who were never satis-fied with the music they heard. These spiritual leaders only wanted to hear what they wanted to hear and rejected any-thing else. Their heart was closed off to their need for re-pentance and for Jesus. They like leaders and others to-day were unwilling to admit fault or weakness. The thought of “We have reached a status above repentance” must have enshrouded their hearts and minds. Pride and fear are issues faced then and now. Fear of losing status among others. Fear of everyone finding out you are not perfect. We allow these fears and our pride from hearing messages we need to hear much like those Jesus’ time. Is there a message lately you have heard and tuned out be-cause it required you to change, show humility, or request forgiveness? When is the last time the sense of conviction overpowered your fear and pride? Maybe you like me need to stop waiting to hear a message we like and act on the messages we need. Evan
Over the next several weeks, in this space here, I’d like for us to consider the foundation of the early church. What was it they were committed to? What was it that drove them? The best place for us to find answers to those questions is in Acts 2, where the church began.
ACTS 2:42-47 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were to-gether and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distrib-uting the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their num-ber day by day those who were being saved.
If you pay attention, you’ll notice the first four words here: “and they devoted themselves.” What is about to follow those words is an outline of the covenant, the commit-ment, that the believers made to God and each other when the church first started. And I think that covenant and commitment is worth thinking on today. As you read, you’ll notice five different things that made up the commit-ment the early church members had. These five things should form our covenant and commitment today to each other and to the church. Today, we’ll make note of the first one.
COMMITMENT TO THE WORD
Above all else, the early church was committed to God and his Word. Their life was governed by it. Their relation-ships were changed because of the Word, the way they worked changed because of the Word, the decisions and choices they made changed because of the Word. Believ-ers, from the beginning of the church, have had their lives transformed because of the power of God and his Word.
We, as individuals, and as a group, must be no different. God, and his Word, must be at the center of our lives. It must dictate how we live and who we live our lives with. For this group, God and his Word should be at the fore-front. What we do and how we do things will be affected because of our belief in God and our commitment to his Word.
