Are You Just

WAITING IT OUT?by Herbert W. Armstrong

RECENTLY I received a let te r from agirl, 21 years of age, who hasproblems I believe to be com

-without friends or companions-be

cause of the TRUTH of God. She wasafraid of what people would think andsay if they learned about her religion. They would think her "fanatical"

would ridicule her.She had been taught as a child by her

mother about the second coming ofChrist, and the end of this world. Shehad been led to expect it immediately, but now, since listening to The WORLD

An Open letter

"Perhaps I can help you. Two or threepoints stick out in your letter. At firstyour let ter sounded like that of an introvert, but as I proceeded I sensed thatyou are permitting FEAR to grip youand isolate you. I see indications of fearof people and their opinions, and fear ofGod- I mean a fear different from thenormal true fear of The Eternal weought to feel.

How to Solve Your Problem

"I believe it would be best for you,for the coming year at least, to go aheadand enroll in the Teachers' college nearyou. Also to enroll for the AmbassadorCollege Bible Correspondence Course, and make Bible study an active, busy, happy occupation. We have been forcedto curtail enrollment in AmbassadorCollege for this year, and our quota is

filled. I f you were to come to Pasadena, you would be thrown with a growingfamily of young people who know andbelieve the truth. Frankly, strange thoit may seem, I do not believe that is bestfor you right now. You have a problem-to overcome this fear of the world, and the marking-time waiting-for-theLord attitude which has made you unhappy. At Ambassador you would haveno opportuni ty to overcome it or fightit off-the problem would be removedentirely. I think it's better for you, willstrengthen you and develop you more,to fight out this battle and win the victory over it. A year at Teachers' collegewill be of great benefit, if you shouldlater come to Ambassador, for we shallneed teachers in the future."Meanwhile, perhaps you can start

attending regular church services at theTabernacle near Gladewater. It is 8 mileswest of Gladewater on Highway 80.Our private driveway back to the Tabernacle grounds is marked by a sign 'PRIVATE GROUNDS-RADIO CHURCH OFGODTABERNACLE,' and is beside the restaurant and cabins at that place. . . .The Feast of Tabernacles will be heldthere beginning sunset October 11th,and ending sunset October 19-8 days.

Mrs. Armstrong and I return from Europe just in time for this, arriving fromNew York at Gladewater the morningof the 11th, and I should like to have atalk with you then. Be sure to look upMrs. Armstrong, or Ted Armstrong, tellthem who you are, and they will getyou into my room there."Just forget SELF, give your life whol

child of God is commanded NOT to beunequally yoked with unbelievers (I ICor. 6)."Happiness is a state of mind-not a

matter of other people, or their fellowship, their ridicule, or their praise. Happiness comes from the knowledge, theSpirit, and obedience of God-and frombeing so BCSY in it-SO ENGROSSED in

this glorious interest and activity, and inBible study and prayer, that we have notime to become despondent, bored, unhappy."

God's Vacation Plan

for YOUHave you wondered if a Christian should take a vacation? Here is

God's answer-s-and here is the way YOU can afford it!

by Roderick C. Meredith

DID JESUS ever take a vacation? What about those years when He

was undoubtedly helping Josephas a carpenter? Did he ever take tripsaway from home on special occasions to

get a needed change from His dailywork?Would God have YOU take such a

trip and vacation? We are commanded to "live by every

word of God" (Luke 4:4). Has God inHis perfect wisdom revealed that eachuf us should have a change and a restfrom our normal work during each year?Has He given specific instructions as to

how this is to be carried Out? Has Godrevealed a plan which ensures that this

~ ' a c a t i o n WILL be made possible to allHis children?

God 's P lan

As Mr. Armstrong has mentionedmany times, God does not want us to beunhappy, sick, or distressed, We bringthese things on ourselves by disobeyingHis perfect laws which are intended to

produce abundant happiness and joy.God is LOVE. And so in His love and

wisdom, He has revealed to us that it isHis will that we take a special kind oft'acation. It is to be done in a mannerwhich will bring us the greatest possiblejoy and lasting benefu: Some of youbrethren already know the kind of vaca-tion I mean. And many of you knowfrom personal experience how right Iam-or rather how loving and graciousGod is to give us all this blessing.I am speaking of your at tendance at

God's annual festivals or holy days. Besure you all read Mr. Armstrong' s cur-

rent articles explaining the pttrpose andmeaning of these days. You need to un-derstand them thoroughly. And, as oneof God's children, you are commandedto keep these festivals for yom own

good.

Men in this world take their vaca-t ~ o n s at a time and in a way that seemsfight to them. And they plan their re-~ i g i o u s gatherings around "camp meet-Ings" according to what seems right ac-cording to hlfman reason.

They are in ignorance of the fact tha tGod reveals that we should combine

these two activities according to themarvelous plan He has revealed. We

are commanded to both worship and rejoice together in God's presence at Hisannual festivals. This is the best possiblek ind of vacation-as many hundreds ofyou brethren know from experience. How could you more joyfully spendyour vacation than with other brethrenwho believe God's t ru th as you do, andwith whom you can talk and play andworship in an atmosphere of love se-cluded from the outside world?

A Command and Privilege

Most of you brethren who receive theGood News have already studied andshould now understand the subject ofGod's annual holy days. But some ofyOIl may have been recently convertedand baptized. You especially need tostudy Mr. Armstrong's current articleson the holy days and their meaning. And you should study th.is matter prayer-fully in your Bible-remembering thatwe are commanded to get back to "the

faith once delivered to the saints" (Jude3) and to follow the inspired example

of Jesus and the apostles. We have proved in past articles-and

will continue to do so--that the annualsabbaths or feast days God gave His

people were commanded and intendedto be kept forever (Lev. 23:21, 31,41). Jesus set us a perfect example inkeeping them, and the apostles continued keeping them and even command-ed Gentile converts to keep these daysof God (I Cor. 5:8) .

While the world is busy observingthe pagan holidays of Christmas and

Easter, and devising "camp meetings"according to human reason-the "waywhich seerneth right unto a man"(Proverbs 14: 12) - i t sneers at the daysGod has made holy. The world ridiculesthese days as "Jewish"-forgetting thatJesus and the apostles kep t these daysin the New Testament. These days arenever referred to as being "holy to theJews." But God calls them "MY sab-baths"-holy unto the Lord! These annual festivals ar e holy to the

Eternal Creator who gives you everybreath of air you breathe! He com-

munds you to keep them-for your owngood. You are defying Him if you re-fuse to keep them. In so doing you willlose knowledge of the t rue God and ofHis plan which is pictured by thesedays. And you will be missing out onthe most happy, joyous, and really

~ o r t h w h i l e vacation opportlmity thereIS.

God's annual festivals truly are a greatblessing to those who are yielded to

God. Many of you bre thren have comeout of this world, and then found your-self unable to have fellowship with anyof God's people. It is often impossibleto meet with other true brethren on theweekly Sabbath. BUT God's annttal Sab-baths or holy days provide an oppor-tunity to travel even some distance andhave that needed fellowship with othermembers of the true church of God.For many brethren who have attended

before, the annual festivals are eagerlyantic ipated as an opportunity to renewthe wonderful fellowship with brethrenfrom all over the nation-and to drink

in spiri tual food in the inspiring meet-ings which are the highlights of the en-tire year.Yes, God himself instructs us that

we ShOldd take a vacation. In His wis-dom, He has ordained that we shouldtake time each year to make the trip toattend His annual festivals-where wecan relax from our daily routine, rejoicewi th other brethren, and learn morespiritual truth in a few days than weordinarily would in months. This isGod's way!Inevitably, many brethren will say,

"But we can't afford to attend God's

festivals."The truth is, you cannot afford not to

attend! And God has instituted a planto ensure that you CAN attend-if youwill do your part.

How to Afford It?

But HOW can we afford it?These festive occasions are command

ed to be kept in the place that Godchooses. Deuteronomy 16: 16 shows par-ticularly that the days of unleavenedbread, including the passover (verse 6),the day of pentecost, and the feast of

tabernacles are all to be kept where Godwould choose.

How do we do it?God has not only provided, bu t also

comrnandcd, a way to make it financial

ly possible for everyone to keep His

holy days!I t is a way which requires con tinua l

EFFORT and determination. I f we are to

be OVERCOMERS-and they only willbe in the kingdom of God-then wewil l have to exercise enough strength

of character and will to obey this command of God. Actually it works no realhardship, bu t brings a great blessing toourselves and others. It is a way that

builds fai th and hope and pat ience andlove. What does God command?God commands us in Deur. 14:22-27

to save each year a special or secondtithe, to go to the place God selects foreach of His festivals, and to rejoice inthem. This second tithe is for expense

money to. enabl e us to keep God 's annual holy days. In ancient Israel most ofthe money was spent for food there, asthe expense for traveling was almostnothing. Today, however, our greatestexpense is often transportation ratherthan food. As the purpose of this secondtithe is to enable us to attend the festivals, we will often spend a good portionin transportation.

Not t he Fi rst Tithe!

Please do not confuse this secondtithe, especially for these occasions, withthe first tithe, which God has commanded us to r ende r to His true ministers forproclaiming to the whole world the gospel. Unlike the second tithe, the firsttithe or tenth of our income belongs toGod. He created all things and is onlypermitting man to use this materialworld anyway. "The ear th is the Lord's,and the fulness thereof ; the world, andthey that dwell therein" (Psa. 24: 1) .In Numbers 18:21 we read that God

gave a tenth or t it he of Israel's incometo the Levires for an inheritance . Thistithe does not belong to us; it is th einheritance of God's ministry. TodJYthe pries thood has been changed (He

brews 7: 12 ), so we now pay our tithesto God's representar ives , Chris t' s t rueministers, for the gospel work (I Cor.

9:14). In Malachi 4:8-12, it says thatwe are robbing God if we fail to renderto Him (through His true servants) ourtithes AND offerings. Most people inthis confused world don't even realizethis. But once we have the knowledgeof the truth, we had better repent andbegin to obey God in this manner. Aswe JUSt read in Malachi, if we do obeyGod by paying our t ithes and giving

offerings, He will bless us. But God doeswant us to be willing to obey Him, and

The GOOD NEWS

to pu t thar ahead of our selfish desires. In Deuteronomy 14:22-27 , we find

that our Creator commands us to lay bya second tithe of our increase or incomeand go to the place which God has chosen. From this tithe we ourselves are to

eat, drink, and rejoice in this place-theplace where God has chosen that Hisannual holy days are to be held. We set

aside this specia l tithe (o r tenth) ofour income every year in order that wemight have the expense money to attend and to rejoice with the brethren.Notice that it says in verse 23: "andTHOU shalt eat before the Lord thyGod. . . ."

This tithe is to be spent on yourself- no t for the ministry. Since there is acommanded t irhe for the ministry, thismust be another, different tithe. In the 12th chapter of Deuteronomy

this special t ithe is mentioned in verses6, 11, and 17 along with the sacrificesIsrael used to bring. Here again this

special or second t it he is for you to useAT THE PLACE which God has chosenfor you to appear before Him on theseholy days.Yes, God has provided a method by

which we can keep His festivals IF weare willing to do our part! It isn't difficult once we try. God has promisedto care fo r our every need ( I Peter5: 1). And if 'we love the brethren Wt;

won't fail to do it.Are we going to follow Christ? Let

everyone examine his own heart!

Produce Too!

Let's use the minds God has endowedus with to carry out these commands ina reasonable manner. Deuteronomy 14:

22 states that you shall tithe the increase of your seed. Then it is certainlypermiss ible for you who are farmers tobr ing some of your produce or cannedgoods to the feasts instead of money.Sad as it sometimes is, with some

families, the second tithe jm t hasn't

been enougb to bring t hem to the feastof tabernacles. In this case, those havingmore than enough second tithe shouldhelp those who lack. Remember, Goddoesn't expect. the poor to save morethan their small tenth, but they must

do their part! God often blesses others, however, with a l arge r t en th so they canhelp those who have less.We find in Acts 4:32-35 that the

early Church of God helped its needymembers and we try to follow this pr inciple. If there is nor enough secondtithe to take the entire family to the

three great feasts, then JUSt the man, ashead of the family, should go (Deut.

16: 16). The Other members of the [amily are expected if. circumstances permit, and God will help us work it Out, intime if we do our part. Of course, if the

September, 1954

husband is an unbeliever, the wifeshould certa in ly try to come anyway.

T ith e fo r the Poor

In reading rhe reference given inDeuteronomy 14:22-27, some of YOil

may have wondered about the meaningof verses 28-29. In these verses, God iscommanding another, altogether differ-

ent tithe. Now don't be shocked! You may not

have known it before, bu t God wantsus to save one more tithe every thirdyear to help the poor and needy! Thi sis God's way of providing money forcharitable purposes. In both Deuteronomy 14:28-29 and

Deuteronomy 26: 12-15 we find thistithe commanded. It used to be setaside in every walled city, "within thygates" (Deut 26: 12). But now manypoor are so far away that we simplysend it wherever needed. This thirdtithe IS to be saved oniy every third

year.Since the laws of lerting the land

rest and releasing the poor debtorswere based on a cycle of seven years,we are to save this special tithe in thethi rd and sixrh ye;lrs out of every sevenyear period. None of you were reallyGod's children-spiritttdl)' Israelites(Gal. 3:29 ) -unt i l you were converted and baptized. So you won't savethis thi rd t ithe unt il the third year afteryou were converted.Remember that this tithe is for the

poor and needy. I f you are really in financial straits God does not expect yOI!

to save thi s tithe: This is a matter between you and God alone, and youshould be honest a bout it befor e Him.This t it he is for the poor, not [rom

the poor! And remember that this specia l t ithe

is only to be saved every third and sixthyear Out of seven. Some of you may t hink tha t paying

God's (nor your!) first tithe to His

work, saving a second tithe with whichto attend His feasts, and, every third

year only, saving an additional third titheto give t he poor and needy is going tobe impossible. That's what the worldbelieves! But we are not of the world

but of the bousebold of faith.Do you th ink God has commanded

you to do something which He knowsyou will be unahle to perform? No!

Those of us who have saved these threetithes know by experience that God isable to bless us sufficiently that weabound to every guud wark( 11 Cor.9: 6-8). He is do ing it this moment forhundreds of the brethren and He will

do it for you. You just do YOUR part

and God will be faithful to perform

HIS!

Meat for the Meal-Planner

by Isabell Hoeb

IT IS NOT an exaggeration to say that

mea t is the most universally l ikedfood.

While consumption of wheat flour inthe United States has steadily diminished since 1939, the per capita conSltmption of meat has risen. In 1939 theaverage person ate 145 pounds of redmeats and poultry combined. By 1952the total had risen co 179 pounds. But if you think Americans eat a

great deal of meat, notice the figuresfor two other countries! Before the Second World War, New

Zealanders ate 321 pounds of meat per

person and Argentineans, 300 pounds.

Values in Meat

Why this universal preference formeat? The value of meat has becomeincreasingly apparent since the composition of different foods and their effectson human nutrition have been studied.Being 75% water and 25% solid mat

ter, meat has the peculiar property ofbeing more concentrated after cookingdue co the loss of moisture. A four-ounceserving of average beef contains asmuch protein as three glasses of milk.Slightly more protein is found in thesame quantity of chicken, fish and lamb.

Of the variety meats only liver andheart are significantly higher in somefood values than muscle meat. Heart

and liver are both rich in i ron and copper, and only liver is rich in vi tamin A.Sweetbreads contain almost no vitaminB. Fowl and beef are about equal invitamin value.Lean meat is 18 to 20 per cent pro

tein-protein that contains ALL theamino acids the body needs for growthand repair. Tests have shown that thehealthy body needs a new supply ofcomplete protein every day because itdoes not store any excess protein that iseaten. Two to three per cent of the lean is

fat, If the meat is well marbled, the leanmay contain up co 17 per cent fat. Onlythe prime cuts ever contain this muchfar and by the methods used co cookthese (broiling and frying), most of thefat is cooked out.

"Organic extractives" comprise from

one to two per cent of meat. These extractives const itute most of the charac

teristic /laval' of meat , and stimulate theflow of digesive juices when eaten. Extractives dissolve easily in water. Therefore, any liquid, other than Fat.. from the

meat should be served with it as gravy

or sauce.Of the minerals, phosphorus and iron

and copper are the principal ones foundin meat. It is very deficient in calcium.Whenever meat containing bone iscooked in stews or soups, you can addvinegar, tomato juice or lemon juice tothem before cooking. This dissolvessome of the calcium from the bones andadds to the food value. The usual proportion is one tablespoon of vinegar orlemon juice co each cup of l iquid used.If you use tomato juice, substitute it forpart of the l iquid, using as much as tasterequires.

The vitamins found in meat are mostly of the B complex. Liver is very richin vitamin A, and the l iver and brainscontain a little vitamin C. These two arenot found in the muscle meats. The facttha t mea t is rich in B vitamins is another reason for serving the juice witbthe meat because these vitamins easilydissolve in water.

Meat Structure Affects Cooking

Diffe rent cooking methods are recommended for the various cuts of meat. Why is this?

The way mea t is constructed deter

mines to a great extent how it is to becooked. Muscle meats consist of muscletissue, connective tissue and fat.

The smallest unit is the muscle cell.It is liquid matter enclosed by a thin, tender sheath. A number of these arebound together by a heavier tissuecalled connective tissue. It is composedof smaller cells and is therefore tougherjust as the closer grain of a-hardwoodtree is harder than the more open grainof softwood trees. This connective tissue is composed entirely of a protein, collagen, which becomes gelat in whenit is put with water or with water and

an acid, and heated. When the animal is fattened, the fatis first deposited around the internalorgans and then in the cells of the connecrive tissue. As the fat collects ill theconnective tissue, it stretches the cellwall, making it thinner. Consequently,FATMEAT IS MORE TENDER THANLEAN.Th e fa t prorecrs th e mear f rom excessive drying during cooking, bu t excessfat should. be trimmed off before cook

ing.In a well-finished animal, some of the

water in the muscles is replaced by fat.Meat from such an animal is firmer

than that from a range-fed animal or

from veal.Meat of the most-used muscles of the

animal is tougher because it containsmore connective tissue. This tissue alsoincreases in quantity as the animal ages. However, these meats contain more "extractives" which add the flavor that isespecially desirable in stews, chili andsoups.

Cooking Methods

One of the main purposes of cookingmeat, then, is to break down this connective tissue-to tenderize it.

Cooking also improves the appear

ance of meat. Not very many peoplecare to think of eating raw meat.Another object is to develop flavor.

Flavor includes aroma as well as taste. This is generally accomplished bybrowning the meat.

Cooking meat also sterilizes it, eliminat ing the possibil ity of any infect ionbeing contracted from it.All methods for cooking meat come

under two headings-dry heat and moistheat. Methods using dry heat are broiling (o r grilling), frying, pan-broilingand roasting. ONLY the most tendercuts are suitable for cooking bj' dry heat

methods because dry heat toughens meatby evaporating water from it. The fat inthe prime cuts, however, reduces evaporation to some extent. Brushing themeat with fat before cooking also prevents some evaporation.

MEATS SUITABLE FOR BROILING areprime cuts of Porterhouse, club, rib, tenderloin and top round steaks, andground beef patties. Broil ing is not anappropriate method for cooking ceal

because it is watery and has almost nofat.

Beef should be at least one inch thickfor broiling. Thinner cuts dry out toO

much.Pan-broiling has the same effect as

broiling. The meat is put into a hot, ungreased skillet and turned frequentlyso that it does not burn. Any f:l: thatcooks Out is poured off as cooking proceeds, a: the meat will be fried insteadof broiled. No lid is used on the frying

pan.Since salt draws out moisture, meat

cooked by dry heat is salted after cooking.Frying is adaptable to thin steaks of

the less tender cuts. A little oil is pm

into the pan. Cuts suitable for fryingare good, commercial and utility gradesof those listed above for broiling. Tothis you may add the prime cuts ofbottom round steak, round steak, shoulder arm steak and chuck steak. The loin, sirloin and rib chops of veal are alsosuitable.

Larger cuts of meat are of ten ROAST

ED. The side of the meat to be turnedup should have a layer of fat so that itwill be self-basting. The meat is placedfat side up in a pan and baked uncovered. It should not be seared beforeroasting.Tests have proven that meat roast

ed in a temperature no higher than

325 0 F. retains much more of its juicesthan when a higher temperature is used.A temperature of 300 0 or even less isbetter. Another advantage is that less ofthe fat layer melts off to soak into themeat.

The fat layer is easily trimmed off

after roasting. A small roast cooked atthis temperature requires about 30 minutes per pound to cook well done.

I f the roast has much exposed surface, such as a flat roast, it should be brushedwith melted butter or oil. This reducesevaporation of the meat juices.Prime grades of beef rump, chuck

ribs, shoulder arm and heel of round aresatisfactory for roasting; also chuck ribs

and arms of veal. Prime, choice·andgood grades of veal loin, rump, leg andsirloin develop full flavor in roasting.

Moist Heat Cooking

Moist heat is practical for toughermeats because the meat can be cookedslowly for a longer time, giving themoisture time to gelatinize the connective tissue.Marinat ing the meat in diluted acids

or cooking meat in such acid liquids tenderizes tough CUts. Tomato juice, vinegar, sour cream, sour milk and lemonjuice are acids used for this purpose. Ifmeat is marinated, it should be slicedfairly thin. After the acid liquid ispoured over the slices, set the meat inthe refrigerator to soak at least 12 hours. It maybe left as long as two days.Stewing is a common way of cooking

very tough meat. It is usually covered with wa{er and simmered--NoT

BOILED. Protein in meat hardens at boiling temperature just as the white of aboiled egg does. Either small or largepieces of meat can be stewed. The meatis not browned. Stew may be cooked aseasily in the oven as top-of-stove. The

pot should be covered.Good to utility grades of the shoulder

arm, rib ends, plate (breast), brisketand neck make fine stew meat. For meat that is not quite so tough,

braising is a flavorful method. The meat

The GOOD NEWS

is first seared in a little fat, then coveredand cooked slowly with a small amountof added liquid. The only object of searing is to brown the meat. It is done ina hot, though not smoking, skillet. Aheavy pan is best. A large piece of meatcooked by braising is called a pot-roast;small pieces of meat braised are called africassee.

Commercial and utility grades of justabout any cut will do for braising.Braising is especially suitable for vealbecause the browning develops flavorwhich veal naturally lacks. Chicken isalso tasty cooked this way.Pressure-cooking is desirable only for

exceptionally tough meats or for use athigher altitudes. The high temperatureeffectually breaks down connective tissue but correct timing must be carefullyobserved so that the protein is nottoughened by over-cooking.

Searing meat harms only the proteinin the browned surface, but the im

provement in flavor makes it more appetizing and stimulating to digestion.

Liver is a problem because it usuallycontains a considerable amount of blood. If it is washed much, it loses an appreciable amonnt of its vitamins, particularly those of the B complex. Most ofthe blood can be eliminated by rinsingthe liver once in barely warm water andcutting OUl the large tubes (blood vessels) with a kitchen scissors or a sharppointed knife. Cutting out these membranes and trimming off the outsideskin makes liver more agreeable to eat.

Cooking Frozen Meats

Frozen meats can be thawed or notbefore cooking. There seems to be noconsistent difference in flavor or juiciness. I f it is thawed first, it should beleft in the original package. At roomtemperature a pound of meat requiresabout 2 hours to thaw. In the refrigerator it thaws in about 5 hours. Unwrapped meat should not be thawed inwater as the juices seep out and are lostin the water.Frozen meats to be fried, such as

chicken and fish, can be placed in a panand quickly thawed enough in a warmoven so that the pieces can be broken

apart. If oven roasts are set to bakewhile completely frozen, they will require about 20 more minutes per poundof cooking time. Inch-thick frozen steaksand chops require about 8 minutes more;

l ~ - i n c h pieces about 15 minutes morethan the regular cooking time.Information about the different Cuts

and grades of meat can be obtainedfrom the Uni ted States Department ofAgriculture through writing your staterepresentative in Congress or from somecook books.

There is not space here to discuss

dressing and cooking chicken and fish. The most common ways of prepar ingthese are by frying, broiling and bakingor roasting. In general the same principles apply to them as to beef.

Historical Example

A most convincing example from areliable historical source of how theJews paid these tithes is given in thebook of Tobit. This book is found inwhat is known as the Apocrypha-a

collection of Jewish history and writings covering and extending beyond theperiod between the Old and New Testaments.

These writings were not inspired, bu tthey do give us a great deal of reliableinformation. Tobit was a man of thetribe of Naphrali, which was among theten tribes taken captive by Assyria.Prior to the captivity, he kept the commandments of God even after the restof his tribe began offering sacrifices toBaal. In the third paragraph of the book of

Tobit, he tells us, "But I alone went

many a time to Jerusalem for the festivals, as the Scripture commands all Israel with an everlasting decree, takingwith me the first fruits and the tenth

part of my crops and my first shearings, and I would give them to th e priests, the sons of Aaron, at the altar. A tenthpart of all my produce I would give tothe sons of Levi, who officiated at Jerusalem, and another tenth I would sell, andgo and spend the proceeds in Jerusalem each year, and a third tenth I wouldgive to those to whom it was fitting togive it, as Deborah my grandmotherhad instructed me-for I was left anorphan of my father."Thus we see that the Israelites had

always understood that they were tosave three tithes, and that each onewas to be used for a different purpose.

God's commandments are not hiddenfrom anyone who sincerely desires toknow the truth.

AN OPEN LETTER

to our newly begotten brethren

recently baptizedby Herbert W. Armstrong

GREETINGS! newly baptized Brethren in Christ Jesus:There is joy and rejoicing

among the angels in heaven over yourrepentance and having been begot tento a lively hope as children of God thruJesus Christ our Lord!

And there is new joy in the heartsof ALL our true brethern and co-workersin Christ over your recent conversionfrom the desires and will of the fleshand the ways and customs of the world,to the government of God in your lifenow, that you may have reward in HisKingdom at the coming of Christ, inthe World Tomorrow!

You will Meet Trials

You have entered upon a new l ife-alife of great happiness and joy-a lifeto continue FOREVER-yet, in thispresent evil world it will not be an easylife. As a matter of fact you have left be

hind the "easy way"-the popular, broad road that leads to destruction. You have passed the cross-roads andturned off onto the narrow, rutty, bumpy, rocky and HARD and DIFFICULT roadwhich very few people in this worldever are willing to enter-but whichleads to SUCCESS, to USEFULNESS, to

HAPPINESS, JOY, and ETERNAL LIFE.

It leads to rewards-not of idlenessand ease, bu t to usefulness and serviceand accomplishment and success-so

great that I know your mind can't possibly grasp it, now. BUT YOU'LL HAVE

TO PAY T HE PR IC E!It won't come easy! All your temp

tations, trials, persecutions and hardships will come from other people-orfrom the devil-or from the consequences of sin, which means violations ofGod's laws and ways. You must rernernber you still have to live IN a worldorganized and living in disregard ofGod's laws-a world governed by thesway of Satan, and according to the impulses of pr ide and vanity, the lusts ofthe flesh, and the greed and tempers ofhuman nature. I f you were still OF this

world, the world would love its own.But because you have renounced thisworld and its ways, and are no longerOF it, the world will hate you, persecute you, turn against you, even as ithated and persecuted your Saviour before you.

Why You Must Suffer

"My PEACE I gin: unto youthat my JOY might remain in you, andthat your joy might be full," said Jesus."These things have I spoken unto youthat in me ye might have PEACE. In

the world ye shall have tribulation: but

be of good cheer; I have overcome theworld."You will meet many affiictions-trials,

tests, troubles-even more than before. But, if you trust in Him, the Eternal willdeliver you OUt of them ALL (Psalm34:19). ALL who will live Godly inJesus Christ shall suffer persecution. (I I

Tim. 3:12).But WHY? Because God has called

you to surrender your life to HIM-toGIVE your life into HIS HANDS-thatHe may transform you into a perfect, holy, righteous CHARACTER. God isCREATOR! And now, with your consent, according to your own free will, youhave placed yourself in His Hands toCHANGE you-to CREATE ou t of youthe Supreme Masterpiece of all HisCreation! And CHARACTER means SELF-DI

RECTION WITH GOD'S HELP INTO GOD'S

WAY OF LIFE. You'll find it is a new

and different way of life from the wayyou have lived up to now. It meansSELF-DENIAL! It means SELF-DISCI-

The concluding installment of Mr.

Armstrong's series on the meaning

of the annual festivals.

PLINE! It means resisting all that is evilor wrong in your nature. It means break-ing up wrong habits-rooting them outof your life-and instilling into your lifeNEW habits-and making these newerright ways fixed HABIT.

This is not easy.It takes WILL POWER.

It requires DETERMINATION.Besides all this, God will permit trials

and tests to come upon you-severe

problems. He will permit CIRCUM

STANCES to drive you to HIM for HELP

- fo r deliverance! You may soon thinkno one in the world is troubled like youare. You will begin to wonder why youhave greater trouble to face than anyone else on earth-c--not realizing thatall other real Christians are going thruthe same tests! Perhaps closest relativeswill turn against you, probably becauseof the Word of God-the TRUTH youhave embraced and started to live. But, if you learn the lesson of FAITH

- and if you have PATIENCE-you mayKNOW that you will be delivered outof every trouble that comes up. Godhas PROMISED to deliver you from everytrial-if you obey and trust Him. Yousee, you are now His very own childactually begotten of Him just as muchas you were begotten of your humanfather. When God gave you the preciousgift of His Holy Spirit-placed HisSpirit within you to renew your mindgive you a sounder, more understandingmind, fill you with His love; faith, patience, power, goodness-His own character, in short, you became an actual be

gotten SON-or daughter--of GOD. Nomerely a creature or being He created

bu t His very own child, actually begotten of Him by His seed, so to speakHis SPIRIT, entering within you. He isnow your FATHER! Not figuratively, buacrually-REALLY!

Now you can go to Him JUSt as anychild can go to his father, for counseand advice, for wisdom, for directionfor HELP in any time of need. Wouldgood human father deny his own childany good thing the child might reallyneed? Neither will your heavenly Fathe

Since you are now a real begottenchild of God-now one of the FAMILY

of God, which is His true Church-you

are one of His heirs. Angels are notsons, but servants. And a servant is notan heir like a son. You are now a co-heirwith Christ, to inherit , with Him, ALL

THINGs--eternal life, this earth as aneverlasting possession, eternal happinessand..joy!

But we are now only heirs-only be-gotten sons. And JUSt as it was necessaryfor us to grow physically f rom the timewe were begotten in ourmothers' wombs

until we developed ready to be born, finally separated from the dependence onthe mother for nourishment and sustenance, and coming into individual andseparate existence, so the begotten spiritual infant must grow and developspiritually, being fed the spiritual food, the Word of God, by the Mother of usall, the true Church, until, at the coming of Christ we shall be CHANGED.
