ASL: Rules of Etiquette
• Eye Contact• Signing Space• Which hand do I use?• Facial Expressions• ASL Is not English• Fingerspelling• Precision is Important• 5 Parameters of Sign
Eye Contact
• In Deaf culture not maintaining eye contact is considered rude.
• If you don’t maintain eye contact it can mean several things to deaf people:
you are not paying attentionyou are day-dreaming
you don’t want to participate in the conversationYou are not interested in conversation
*Remember your eyes are your ears.
The Signing Space
• The area where most signs are made in normal conversation. Signing outside
the sign space is uncomfortable on you and the person watching.
*Most signs are:Centered on your right or left of
your middle torso.
Which Hand do I use?
• The hand that feels comfortable to you: most of the time it is the hand you write with.
• (marriage ceremony)• That hand is called your: dominate hand• The other hand is the :non-dominate
handDON’T SWITCH!!
Facial Expressions
• When people talk in a monotone you become bored. That same truth holds for signing without
facial expression : IT IS BORING for me and other deaf people.
ASL is not English
• ASL is not English
• You must learn to think in ASL not English
Fingerspelling
• We talked about this yesterday
• Try to communicate in other ways before you fingerspell.
• It is not an easy task to master. It takes time and that’s fine.
Precision is Important
• Signing clearly is the same as speaking clearly
• Sloppy signing is exactly like mumbling
• This can lead to misunderstandings.
