Version 1: Cinematic

• Close up of feet standing @ the edge of the window (decision time).•Voice over after the children have left with Peter.•Low Angle: watching the kids fly, Peter convincing Wendy to go, parents coming up the stairs.•High Angle: watching the kids fly (see things from their perspective)•Lighting was low (dim) throughout due to the setting. Then, lighting changes-more side lighting as they travel through space.•Halo light behind Peter as he convinces Wendy to leave her home.•Music starts slow and soft and builds louder and more exciting; it’s instrumental music.

Version 2: Cinematic

• Shots were mostly medium and long as the kids were flying. When they were flying, there were a few close ups as the “flew” towards the camera.

• Low (dim) Lighting was more distinct and steady. The audience was able to see shadows on the ground (not visible in the other version).

• Camera angles changed from high to low often.

• The scene was mostly music; the music was fast and it was a song with lyrics, unlike the 1st version.

Version 1: Vocal /Facial

•Peter whispers to Wendy; his voice is promising, almost pleading for her to come and guaranteeing it will be fun.•Peter smiles a lot•Wendy’s dialogue is hesitant (“Never is an awfully long time”).•Wendy screams as they all fly through the air; she puts her hands up to protect herself from crashing into the chimney but Peter pulls her out of the way.

Version 2: Vocal/Facial• Not a lot of dialogue. Peter

encourages all the Darling kids to come with him (“Come on everybody! Here we go!”) and he tells Wendy matter-of-factly where Neverland is (“Second star to the right and straight on until morning”); Michael encourages the dog to come with (Come on, Nanna!”)

Page 5: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

Version 1: Actions•Peter holds out his hand to Wendy when she hesitates to go with him; he returns and whispers for her to come and forget all her worries.•Wendy puts her hands up to protect herself from flying into the chimney; Peter pulls her away.•All kids have their arms stretched out as they fly.•Parents run up the stairs and down the hall to try and stop their children from leaving; Nanna barks at the window and wags her tail.•Peter has the kids hold ankles as he takes them to Neverland; he leads the Darling children to Neverland.

Version 2: Actions• All the kids stretch out their arms

as they fly. John puts on his top hat, and Michael carries his teddy bear.

• Michael grabs Tinkerbell and sprinkles fairy dust on Nanna-who is tied up in the yard.

• All the kids land on Big Ben (the clock) and Peter points out Neverland to Wendy.

• Peter “skis” on two swans and plays his flute.

• The kids hold hands as they fly to Neverland; Peter leads the Darling children to Neverland.

Page 6: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

Version 1: Props/Setting

•London, kids are at home and getting ready for bed (they are in their pjs)•John takes the top hat from the gentleman on the street and wears it.•Michael brings his teddy bear.•Peter’s costume is unlike the Darling children; he’s wearing long, knee-length shorts covered with green and brown leaves. The shorts have a one shoulder strap.

Version 2: Props/Setting

• London, kids are at home and getting ready for bed (they are in their pjs)

• John has a top hat and umbrella• Michael has a teddy bear• Peter is wearing a green short

sleeve shirt, long pants, a green hat, and has a knife on a belt.

• Kids seem younger and happier, and more willing–easy to convince—to follow Peter; there’s no hesitation on Wendy’s part.

Your opinion!

Which version do you think is better AND why?• When you answer this question, be sure to name

the version and use the terms you have learned.• Eventually you will answer in CEW format.

– Although version two will always hold a special, sentimental place for me, I believe that version one is the better of the two for today’s audience. Version one’s artistic elements, specifically the cinematic and costume categories, make the improbable story more believable, more adventurous, and more magical.

Paragraph 1: Intro on the similarities & differences

In both versions, Peter is talking to convince Wendy Darling to fly away from her home and to Neverland. From the window in both scenes, Peter talks to Wendy; he sounds happy about the possibilities and knows that for her, running away is a big decision. The actions of the Darling children in both versions illustrate this desire for freedom. Not only do the children run away with Peter, but their flying is literal; they leave home and literally hold their arms out to fly away. Another similarity that adds to the scene in both versions is the music. While one version contains lyrics and the other is only instrumental, both help to set the mood of the scene. One final similar element is the color of Peter’s costume: it’s green. While Peter is convincing Wendy to leave her home and follow him to Neverland in both versions, the overall feel is quite different: Version 1 is much more adventurous & realistic while Version 2 is more light-hearted & playful.

Page 17: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

Paragraph 2: What aspects of the first version support your thesis? What is

their importance? Tie it back to your thesis! In the first version of the scene, the elements of voice, action, cinema (specifically music) and costume set the mood of the story as adventurous & realistic. Peter is talking to convince Wendy Darling to fly away from her home and to Neverland. He hovers in the window while Wendy hesitates to join him. He leans close and whispers quietly, “Forget them, Wendy. Forget them all. Come with me where you’ll never…never have to worry about grown up things ever again.” These words are exactly what Wendy wants to hear; she doesn’t want to grow up-yet she hesitates. This is realistic in that the audience can identify with a negative reaction to change as well as to hesitation; Wendy doesn’t want and fears growing up. Her world will change and she is literally and figuratively standing on the edge of that change. In this scene, Peter’s next actions (he smiles mischievously) at her weak protest of “Never is an awfully long time” suggests that he knows she is weakening and he is happy with this “long time” arrangement and sure about her running away. Wendy joins him (rejecting adulthood), and the audience learns this when the camera cuts to Wendy flying with Peter and her brothers away from their home. The actions of the Darling children illustrate their freedom. Symbolically, they are like birds. The Darling children spread their wings, or in this case, their arms, and flown away from home. They have never done this before, so this is a new adventure for them with many possibilities. The irony is that although Wendy doesn’t want change, she will discover a different world in Neverland, unlike anything she knows. However, she doesn’t have to have any responsibility-other than that which she voluntarily takes on. This is realistic for an older audience; responsibility for many begins will small choices. Another element that adds to the adventurous mood is the music. In this version the music is instrumental. It starts out soft and slow, but as Wendy makes her decision and begins her journey, the music builds stronger and louder. The notes hold the awe, wonder, and excitement which reflect the adventure on which all the Darling children are embarking. Finally, Peter’s costume adds to the realism. While the audience knows this is Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, and the story is imaginary, the costume chosen makes this seem real. Peter is wearing long shorts covered in green and brown leaves. A branch wraps around his left arm. Barefoot with messy hair, he looks like a boy who embraces life outdoors. These elements create a vision of Peter Pan as not only a great adventure but also a real possibility.

Paragraph 3: What aspects of the second version support your thesis? What

is their importance? Tie it back to your thesis!

Paragraph 4: Your evaluation of which version you think was better and why it

was better.

• Use the film language you have learned to justify your opinion.

• This should be longer than a few sentences.• Take at least one element from each category

to justify your reasoning.

Compare and Contrast Homework

Please follow the directions in this power point in order to complete the worksheet. It is due when you come to class on Monday, January 12th. This will be a grade.

There are no retakes on summative assessments because the practice is the “redo.” This is the place to mess up and redo the work to prepare for the final!

Page 21: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

Supplies--You will need:• Your worksheet (if you need another one, it is

on the website with this power point).• Your film unit notes on cinematic elements. If

you need a refresher, that power point is also on the website with this power point.

• Something to write with.• Internet connection (if you are reading this, you

already have access to the internet)• About 45 minutes of time (the equivalent to a

class period)• Your brain and some patience!

Page 22: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

Worksheet• Before you start, read through the worksheet.

• Side 1: As you view the scenes, you will write down observations you notice about the following areas: vocal/facial expressions, cinematic elements (movie notes will be helpful here), actions, and setting/props/costumes. You will do this for EACH scene.

• Side 2: Once you are done taking notes about each scene, decide what is the overall feel or meaning of both scenes? (Claim) Then you are going to compare and contrast these scenes. That is, you are going to look at the similarities (what makes these scenes the same) and then decide how these scenes differ from each other (how are these scenes different). (Evidence)

• For both similarities and differences, you are going to explain HOW these details create the feel or meaning of the scene. This is the warrant (so what?)

Page 23: Good Morning! Please take out your materials from yesterday as well as your notes, and a pen/pencil

The Great Gatsby • You will be viewing two different versions of

Gatsby’s death from The Great Gatsby. • As you watch each version, do side 1 first. You

will probably have to view each scene several times to complete your notes.

• When you are done with side 1, then complete side 2. You will probably have to view the scenes again if needed.

• See the next slides for viewing information.

Thesis Template

While ______________________________________________, the overall feel is quite different:                                 (insert overall similarities of both scenes)version 1 is __________________________________________ while _________________________.                                  (insert the overall feel of version 1)                        (insert the overall feel of version 2)

See slide 5 for tone words that will help with overall feel.

Example from Peter Pan

While in both scenes Peter is convincing Wendy to follow him to Neverland, the overall feel is quite different: the live action version is much more adventurous and realistic while the animated version is much more light-hearted and playful.

The Great Gatsby quick overview

• The scene you are about to see is the death of Jay Gatsby, the film’s main character.

• Gatsby has had an affair with Daisy, a married woman, but it is over. Daisy’s husband, Tom, had an affair with a woman named Myrtle, but she was killed in a hit-and-run accident where Daisy was the driver. In this scene, Gatsby is alone in his swimming pool, however, George (Myrtle’s husband), enters the pool area, shoots and kills Gatsby and then shoots himself.
