LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION: “ The fi rst of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.”
SAMUEL LANGHORNE CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN) was born – two months prematurely – under Halley’s Comet on Nov. 30, 1835 in Missouri. While on a riverboat ride Clemens fi rst heard the expression “mark twain” (a boating term meaning two fathoms), which he adopted as his pen name, fi rst affi xing it to a humorous travel letter in 1863. Despite his unfortunate fi nal years, when personal tragedy plagued him causing a darker tone to color his writing, he was bzeloved, feted and frequently consulted on issues of the day. Clemens predicted in 1909 that he would die when the famous comet would come back, and when he died in Connecticut in 1910, Halley’s Comet was once again blazing in the heavens.—DW
