While on a riverboat ride Clemens first heard the expression “mark twain” (a boating term meaning two fathoms), which he adopted as his pen name, first affixing it to a humorous travel letter in 1863. Despite his unfortunate final years, when personal tragedy plagued him causing a darker tone to color his writing, he was bzeloved, feted and frequently consulted on issues of the day. Clemens predicted in 1909 that he would die when the famous comet would come back, and when he died in Connecticut in 1910, Halley’s Comet was once again blazing in the heavens.—DW
