Note: this list does not include all Tablelands hotels. Names listed are the current day names - many hotels have had various names over their history with many also rebuilt after the original hotel was destroyed.

Hotels have long been a social centre for rural communities across the Tablelands since towns were settled. Whether for a cold beer after a long day’s

work or somewhere to take the family for a meal, pubs are a meeting place for locals, visitors and tourists alike. Stories are told, world problems are solved and new friendships are formed in pubs. Nothing quite matches the warm feeling you get from eating a great counter meal and washing it down with an ice cold beer. If it’s winter and there’s a fire – even better.

The Tablelands is rich in hotel history, but sadly many no longer exist whether for economic reasons, or due to fire, dams or severe weather events. It’s hard to imagine that in the 1880s Herberton once hosted 18 hotels! Today two of those hotels remain standing and trading — Royal Hotel and the Australian Hotel. The Royal Hotel is the oldest continuously licenced premises on the Tablelands with the Australian Hotel second.

Most hotels were built with quality local timbers, which meant they were strong and would stand the test of time, cyclones and weather. The beauty of the timbers and craftmanship that went into these buildings is nothing short of astonishing and we are fortunate to still have them to treasure and admire today.

Built in 1908, the Peeramon Hotel withstood decades of bad weather but was badly damaged in 2006 by Cyclone Larry. It is currently being renovated and looking fantastic. Malanda Hotel, built in 1911, is the largest timber hotel in Australia, complete with stunning ballroom, large dining room and ornate timber staircase.

Built a year earlier, the Yungaburra Hotel (also known as the Lake Eacham Hotel) is the second largest timber hotel in Australia. The Ravenshoe Hotel holds the title of the ‘Highest Pub in Queensland’ at 920 metres. With its beginnings in the 1880s, the Barron Valley Hotel underwent a couple of rebuilds, with the latest in the late 1930s early 1940s in the fancy Art Deco style of the time. It’s interior remains mostly unchanged and utterly charming, and has been operated by the Nasser family since 1930.

A number of pubs on the Tablelands have succumbed to fire. The Atherton Hotel (burnt 1944), the Junction Hotel in Dimbulah (burnt 1957), the Millaa Millaa Hotel (burnt 1998), Carriers Arms (now Anthill Hotel) and Dunlops Hotel (now the Gateway Hotel) in Mareeba and the Tolga Hotel (burnt down 1929 and was replaced with a building transported from Kureen). These were all rebuilt and continue to trade. After the Atherton Hotel fire, only a charred light pole remained and so it became fondly known as “The Black Stump” – the rebuild was completed in 1954.

In the last year, the Kairi Hotel and Gateway Hotel have both undergone significant renovations, with the Gateway recently being recognised with a number of awards. To see these historic buildings brought back to life so that future generations can enjoy them is very special.

After the First World War, new gathering centres for returned servicemen surfaced in the form of RSL Clubs which focussed on their welfare. Whilst there are still many active branches and halls, only a couple on the Tablelands trade as clubs – Malanda RSL and Citizens’ Memorial Club and the Mareeba

RSL. These venues not only provide a social gathering place for returned soldiers, but also house war memorabilia and memorials to those who have served Australia.

In recent decades our towns have seen many clubs enter the scene. From sporting, golf, bowls, leagues and recreation clubs to international clubs, our hotels have added another facet to the way we socialise and stay connected within the community. Tablelands clubs are thriving and adapting for new generations of customers, but at the heart is always a place to gather with friends and family.

The Tablelands is blessed to have so many options when it comes to pubs and clubs and all serve great food for the whole family. Everyone has a favourite pub story and can recall an Aussie larrikin they’ve come across sitting on a bar stool who spins a good yarn – it’s what makes our pubs a treasure.

14 What’s On & Where To Go December 2017-January 2018

The beetles of summer

those in cooler regions may spend two years underground. The larvae are crescent-shaped with a pale, reddish-brown head and three pairs of legs, but can be quite difficult to distinguish from other beetle larvae.

After pupating, the adults time their emergence with warmer conditions and are also stimulated by rainfall. Different species will emerge at different times throughout the summer; perhaps to avoid direct competition. Other factors can influence the exact timing of their emergence, such as seasonal variations in weather patterns. Most Christmas beetles emerge from November to February, but as we know many appear in late December.

Christmas beetles are good flyers and can cover distances of several kilometres. Many fly at dusk, and are often attracted to lights after dark and can end up buzzing around the front porch.

Adult beetles are voracious leaf-feeders and often congregate in groups to feed and find mates in a wide variety of gum trees. Such is their tendency to cluster that hundreds can be found in a single tree, while an identical adjacent tree remains empty. While on occasion these beetles can cause damage to trees, most will usually recover. As is repeatedly the case, the increasing severity of the impact of the beetles on some trees is the result of human ecological disturbance – the depletion of forests and the increase in grasslands as Christmas beetle breeding sites.

by Alan Henderson - Minibeast Wildlife www.minibeastwildlife.com.au

Summer in Australia signifies all sorts of occurrences in nature, and one which many people identify with

is the appearance of Christmas beetles. These lovers of eucalypt leaves often emerge in early summer, as Christmas approaches. They are frequently seen together in large numbers, decorating gum trees in their own unique way.

Christmas beetles belong to the scarab family of beetles. We have over 30 species of Christmas beetles in Australia, with colour forms that include brown, green, blue and stunning gold. Many are found along the east coast, and in some regions have become more abundant where land clearing has provided extra grasslands for them to reproduce in.

The life cycle of these beetles is the same basic cycle as most beetles. Eggs are laid underground in grasslands adjacent to eucalypt trees or forests. The grubs (larvae) feed upon grass roots and their growth is dependent on soil temperature. Those in warmer climates may emerge a year later, whilst

Tableland Trails and DestinationsA N U N D E R W A T E R T O U RI like cryptic titles. Recently I bought myself a little Olympus TG4 underwater camera with a fish-eye lens attachment. I’ve been thinking about all the possibilities when you don’t have to worry about getting camera gear wet and the perspectives that might be available from just under the water. At Millaa Millaa Falls recently, I started thinking about images from within, behind and under the falls. This developed into a tour of iconic Tablelands scenes from angles limited only by my imagination and ability to hold my breath. So it makes sense that the destinations in this article will feature waterfalls and other wet places!

Closest to my home is Emerald Creek Falls. The park entrance is off Tinaroo Creek Rd between Mareeba and Kuranda. The road has recently been cleaned up so it’s an easy drive to this fantastic attraction for swimming, picnicking and photography. Just before the walking track zig-zags up to the lookout, an unofficial track leads to a deep swimming hole at the bottom of a set of falls (not the main waterfall). After a short refreshing swim got me to a ledge, I was able to attempt a few shots through the water.

Another aquatic photo location was Lake Eacham. The lake, I have to say, is rather eerie when viewed from under water. As part of the Crater Lakes National Parks, Eacham and Barrine offer great recreational experiences but as anyone who has dived in the lakes will tell you, they are very mysterious from below

the waterline. The fish are quite friendly though!

The iconic Millaa Millaa Falls is one of the most photographed falls in Australia and as such is a subject screaming out to be photographed differently. Having tried many angles before taking the underwater approach, including a behind-the-falls view, I climbed the slippery track on the left bank. Shooting the sun

through a veil of water is an experience I thoroughly recommend however great care is needed on the slippery rocks and do try to keep water droplets off your lens. A trick to avoid this is to lick your lens then dip it in the water. Saliva is to a degree hydrophobic and displaces water giving you the opportunity for a clear shot and a bad taste in your mouth.

Most waterfalls around the Tablelands have the potential to get up close and personal with a waterproof camera. Both Millstream and Tchupala Falls (Palmerston Section of Wooroonooran National Park) once had trails to the bottom of each waterfall but as they have now been closed I can’t recommend these sites as destinations. So if feeling adventurous and you have a camera that you can take some risks with (GoPros and the like of course come to mind), why not try some new perspectives with old favourites. Just be extremely careful with slippery rocks and strong undertows around big falls and make sure you don’t run out of saliva!
