BRANDT SNEDEKER: WINNER TAKES ALL

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Brandt Snedeker admitted that winning the FedEx Se-ries was all about timing.

He proved to be the right man in the right place Sun-day in the Tour Championship collecting the $1.44 mil-lion prize, and the FedEx Cup with its $10 million bo-nus. That’s more money than Snedeker had made in his career going into the 2012 season.

The $11 million is the same amount that McIlroy has earned in a year that included his second major victory and three other tournament wins.

McIlroy tops the rankings, of course, but after four play-off events in five weeks a new face is in the limelight.

That’s the attraction with the season ender, the FedEx Playoffs was structured to create uncertainty, a little tension and give every player in the 30 strong field a chance - at least mathematically.

Snedeker’s father taught him not to buy anything he couldn’t pay for, and Snedeker has followed that ad-vice. He has a house in Nashville, which he says is “not grandiose.” He still drives the SUV he bought after he made it to the PGA Tour six years ago.

Money may not have changed him, yet his win at the Tour Championship and the FedEx Series certainly will be life changing.

PERFECT TIMING FOR SNEDEKER

SNEDEKER SECURES PGA TOUR ChAMPIONShIP

Brandt Snedeker has won the season ending PGA Tour Championship by three strokes in Atlanta.

Snedeker, 32, shared the overnight lead with England’s Justin Rose, carded a two-under-par final round 68 for 10-under-par total, three better than Rose who finished in outright second at 7-under-par.

Luke Donald fired a final round 67 to move eight plac-es to finish at 6-under-par and in a share of third posi-tion with American Ryan Moore.

Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson finished in a tie for fifth at 5-under-par, with Tiger Woods firing a final round 2-over-par, 72, to finish in a tie for eighth posi-tion with Hunter Mahan, who fired the day’s low round with a 66.

Rory McIIroy shot a final round 74 to slip down the leaderboard six places to eventually finish in a tie for tenth position at 1-under-par.

Snedeker was also recently named as a wildcard pick for the Ryder Cup, which starts on Friday in Chicago.

The American was one of five players – along with Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and US trio Tiger Woods, Nick Watney and Phil Mickelson – who knew that victory in Atlanta could be enough to also win the US$10,000,000 bonus FedEx Cup series.

Had Rose beaten Snedeker in Atlanta, it would have given his Ryder Cup teammate McIlroy overall victory in the FedEx Cup standings.

Snedeker attributed his winning form in Atlanta pri-marily to his putting.

“I putted great all week, and you needed to do that in this wind and on this golf course,” said Snedeker.

“It’s just unbelievable. You know, this is what you work your whole life for. I look at all the putts I have hit and all the shots I have hit all through my life, it’s just unbe-lievable the ability to stay calm today.”

“It just came through. I’m very rarely speechless, but this is about as close as I get to speechless.”

Coming into the Tour Championship, Brandt Snede-ker’s 2012 had already been deemed a massive suc-cess.

With a win early in the year at the Farmers Insurance Open, 6 top 10’s on the PGA Tour, a spot on his first Ryder Cup team and over $3.5 million in season earn-ings in the bank were already to his credit.

Snedeker’s efforts at The Open Championship, where he led at the halfway mark before eventually taking a share of third place, also played a pivotal role this week.

“I kind of lean back on past experiences, for sure,” said Snedeker.

“I looked back at the British, and this morning kind of came to the golf course knowing that I had to deal with the pressure.”

“So I knew that by just hanging in there today, just stay patient that the result would follow. I got a couple of good breaks out there, and I stayed patient.”

“Even though I didn’t play particularly great, I hung in there very, very well. It could have gotten really ugly on the weekend, and it didn’t. “

With the win Snedeker banked US$11.4 million ($1.4 for winning the Tour Championship and $10 million for the FedEx Cup) to add to his $15 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour.

He also became the second straight FedExCup winner to capture the FedExCup and the Tour Championship.

Adam Scott shot 72 to finish at three-over-par for the week, thirteen shots back from Snedeker in 19th place.

“I was a little bit off and a bit loose this week,” said Scott.

“I didn’t really hit it close enough this week. I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get it quite dialled in.”

John Senden finished back in 26th, 18 off the pace af-ter a final round 75.

PLAYER PROFILE

CULLEN FOCUSSED ON PGA TOUR CARDFrom his breakthrough win to playing with Rory McIlroy, Nick Cullen is having the best year of his golfing life

2012 has been a season of ‘firsts’ for South Aus-tralian left-hander Nick Cullen – a breakthrough win at the Indonesia Open in the OneAsia Tour season opener in March, which also provided him with starts in Japan, he qualified for his first Open Championship at Royal Lytham and had a brush with the world number one along the way.

As September ticks down, Cullen has further goals in his sights for the remainder of the year including a date with destiny at the PGA Tour Qualifying School in November.

Cullen is excited about the final few months of the year, where he will certainly be adding to his passport stamp collection, but you get the sense his schedule is being built around an assault on the PGA Tour Qualifying School in California from late November.

“I’m looking forward to a few weeks off after com-ing back from Korea (September’s High1 Resort Open).”

“I should get a start in the Dunhill Links Champi-onship in Scotland and will head back after that to prepare for the Perth International, then the US Tour School in November.” he explained.

“I’ve never played in Scotland so it should be interesting, awesome.”

Winning so early in the season helped Cullen in many obvious ways, boosting his bank balance by $180,000 and providing the comfort of a two year exemption, but it also allowed him set a playing schedule for the year.

Since March, Cullen has criss-crossed Asia, played tournaments in Japan and made a maid-

en appearance at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes in July after winning a position via the International Qualifying tourna-ment at Kingston Heath early in the year.

Although he missed the cut by a shot, the expe-rience of the Open was awesome.

“It’s always good when you play and you’ve got Tiger and Rickie and those sorts of guys walking around on the putting green.”

“In the end though, it’s just another tournament. I didn’t play that great and wasn’t that nervous.”

“I played 5 holes with Rory McIlroy in one of the practice rounds. I had a good chat with him and he’s a really nice guy so that was good.” he said.

How does a virtual tour rookie from Adelaide in his first trip to Britain as a professional land a practice round with the World Number One?

“I had my name down with some Japanese guys then changed it to some of the Spanish guys, but I didn’t really want to play with Alvaro Quiros and have him outdriving me by 50 every hole.” he laughed.

“So I put my name down with McIlroy, Greg Owen and Scott Pinckney.”

“Rory only played 5 holes with us then jumped across to 15. I’d never seen him play up close before so it was good to see.”

As one of Australia’s best up and coming players, local fans will have the chance to see Cullen play in Perth but will then have to wait until the Aus-tralian Open at The Lakes and the PGA Cham-pionship at Coolum for his next appearances on home soil.

He is at peace with his decision to pursue the opportunities in Europe and prepare properly at home for the Tour School, instead of playing the extra tournaments in China and Korea that would have boosted his chances of taking out the Or-der of Merit.

That’s the beauty of the two year exemption in his eyes.

“I haven’t really taken advantage of that (all the opportunities) this year but I get some more good starts next year so hopefully I can do well then.”

KEATING WINS MAIDEN LET EVENT IN TENERIFE

Australian Stacey Keating birdied the first ex-tra hole in a sudden death play-off to secure her maiden Ladies European Tour victory at the Tenerife Open de España Femenino on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Victorian in her second season on the Ladies European Tour holed a short birdie putt on the 452-metre par five 18th, after tying with Germany’s Caroline Masson at 9 under par in regulation play.

“It was a tough day out there and Caroline and I both played well. It was nice to take it to a play-

off and then get over the line,” said Keating.

Keating closed with a two under par 70 to come from a stroke behind Masson but it was a close final round duel in hot and windy conditions. The lead was exchanged several times before Mas-son made a mistake in the play-off by hitting her second shot into a water hazard. Her third came up short in the rough while Keating hit a superb approach shot to five feet short of the flag.

“All day it was very close and Caroline holed some putts when she needed to so it was nice and it’s always nice to birdie the play-off hole,” said Keating, who bounced back in the best way from the disappointment of being disqualified in last week’s Women’s British Open at Royal Liver-pool.

“I’ve probably had the worst week of my life and the best week of my life in two weeks. It was very disappointing last week but this makes up for it, I can tell you. It will be all forgotten, last week,” she said.

Keating earned €52,500 for the win with the midway leader and 2007 champion, NSW’s Nikki Garrett, 2 strokes adrift in 4th place at 7 under.

26-year-old Austraian Stacey Keating has won her first Ladies European Tour title with fellow Aussie Nikki Garrett closing in equal 4th place

DALE WINS SA SENIOR AMATEURBY AUSTRALIAN SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF

In an exciting day’s play the experienced NSW senior Denis Dale has finished as the winner of the 2012 South Australian Senior Amateur Cham-pionship played at the Barmera Golf Club on the Murray River.

Trailing overnight leader, John Beaumont, by a stroke, Dale fell further behind with Beaumont playing beautiful golf to be one under par after 8 holes.

When Beaumont then struck trouble at the 9th and Dale birdied the 10th, it was a one stroke margin to Dale.

Victorian Alan Bullas was also playing very well in the final group and was just a couple behind.

The margin stayed the same for most of the back nine with some good golf played by all three as a strong wind came up for the final holes.

When the group reached the 485 metre par 5 eighteenth all three still had a chance to win - Dale leading Beaumont by one and Bullas by two.

The final result saw Denis Dale (73-82-75=230) the winner from Alan Bullas (77-78-77=232) and John Beaumont (74-80-78=232).

The destiny of players hoping to secure one of 10 LPGA Tour cards for 2013 via secondary Symetra Tour Money List will unfold with the final event of the season to be played this week.

Tour rookie Julia Boland from Tamworth, NSW blew a great opportunity to secure her card for next season by shooting a final round 78 after starting the final round in a tie for 6th in last week’s Vidalia Championship in Georgia.

26-year-old Boland, a winner at the Four Wind Invitational in August, sits sixth on the Money List with one event remaining and is in a battle for ‘Rookie of the Year’ honours with Mi Hyang Lee of Korea.

AUSSIES IN LINE FOR LPGA CARDS ON SyMETRA TOUR

Despite winning the Tate & Lyle Player’s Champi-onship in June, Perth’s Kristie Smith is now in the unfortunate position of being well outside the coveted Top 10 (17th place), following consecu-tive missed cuts over the past two tournaments.

She will need to pull out all stops at this week’s Daytona Beach Invitational in Florida if she is to stand any chance of breaking into the Top 10 and achieve a long-held goal of an LPGA Tour card.

This season marks the first time in history the Road to the LPGA will award the top-10 players with equal, exempt status on the LPGA Tour for the 2013 season.

PGA TOUR UNVEILS NEW ROAD TO TOUR CARD

Buoyed by the success of the FedEx Cup play-offs on the main tour, the USPGA Tour intends to introduce a new road to that Tour for players on the secondary Web.com Tour.

From 2013, a series of four “final” events will be played beginning August 29, offering 50 full cards on the major Tour for those who star.

Each of the four events will have a one-million dollar purse and will comprise of the top 75 play-ers from the Web.com Tour money list as well as

players who didn’t make the top 125 to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

“With the introduction of this new qualifying process and four Finals events in 2013, the Web.com Tour is about to embark on the most ex-citing era in its 23-year history,” Commissioner Finchem said.

“The Finals will be the culmination of a sea-son-long quest to secure a PGA Tour card and will end the year in a new and exciting fashion.

Beginning in 2013, the Web.com Tour will clear-ly be the pathway to the PGA Tour.”

The first three of those events have already been announced. They are:

✪ The Hotel Fitness Championship (AUG 29)

✪ The Chiquita Classic (SEP 5)

✪ Children’s Hospital Championship (SEP 11)

A fourth event is still to be announced and will be played from September 26-29 to give players a one-week break before the final “showdown”.

The player’s consistent efforts to get into those final four events will count for nothing once they are there, as all players will start from “scratch” in the finals.

Despite that, the top 25 from the Web.com Tour regular season will still be assured of getting their

cards. The next 25 will also get some sort of card status as well.

The separate money list from these finals events will decide the pecking order for the tourna-ments of the 2013-2014 season.

Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said the intro-duction of this new qualifying process and four finals events made it the most exciting era in the secondary tour’s 23-year history.

Surprisingly, it’s not the end of the road for the gruelling Tour School.

It will still be played although players will be vy-ing for cards on the Web.com Tour.

At one stage the Tour tossed around the idea of having just three end-of-season events but even-tually decided to go with four to be assured of the most consistent players progressing.

SOUTh PACIFIC GOLF OPEN KICKSTARTS PGA SEASON

The South Pacific Golf Open Championship offi-cially starts the 2012-13 season of the PGA Tour of Australasia and is set to get underway this Thursday at the Tina Golf Course in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Sixty-three Australian and New Zealand touring professionals will tee it up alongside five local Professionals and twenty-four amateurs from the golf club.

This is the second year the tournament is being played on the PGA Tour of Australasia, having grown substantially since its humble beginnings as a pro-am on the NSW/ACT Pro-Am Circuit.

Last year Matt Griffin recorded his second win as a professional and he enters this week as one of the gun players following his recent win on the OneAsia Tour.

“I have always enjoyed playing golf on the is-lands and I think it has a lot to do with a relaxed atmosphere,” said Griffin

“I go into the event with some form after my win last month on the OneAsia Tour and feel my game is still there. It’s a great feeling to return to be able to defend your title and hopefully I can make it back-to-back wins.”

Former PGA Tour winner Andre Stolz and US Open qualifier Anthony Summers are two play-ers also hoping to get their Australian season off with a win with Stolz looking for his fourth PGA Tour of Australasia victory.

“I have really enjoyed playing New Cal the few times I’ve been there, it can be an incredibly tough test if it’s firm and fast and then also add some strong wind and you’ve got a battle on your hands,” says Stolz.

“I think the course really suits my game, I’m usu-ally a good driver of the ball and I can control

my ball in the wind. You need to do both these well to have a chance of winning at Tina so I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

After a successful start to the 2012 PGA Tour of Australasia season, which included consecu-tive runner up finishes at the Queensland PGA Championship and the NZ PGA Pro-Am Cham-pionship, Andrew Martin is a player looking for his breakthrough win this week.

“It’s been a good start to the year for me with the results I have had so far, I guess based on these I’m on the verge of a breakthrough win and I feel it can come at the South Pacific Open given the good shape my game is in,” said Martin.

“To get that first win as a Professional would just mean the world to me. I won a lot as an amateur and to finally put my name up there as a PGA Tour of Australasia Tour winner would just be un-believable.”

Other players set to contest the South Pacific Golf Open Championship include Open Cham-pionship qualifier Aaron Townsend, WA PGA champion Michael Wright, and NSW PGA cham-pion Matthew Guyatt.

The winner of the South Pacific Golf Open Championship will earn a spot into the Perth International, Australian Masters, New Zealand Open, Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship, as well as Official World Golf Ranking points and the champion’s share of the AUD$120,000 prize purse.

TEENAGER LyDIA KO CONFIRMS AMATEUR STATUS

She’s still only 15-years-old and already the pres-sure is mounting on young New Zealand star Lydia Ko to turn professional.

Wins in the New South Wales Open and the Ca-nadian Open have thrust the youngster onto the world stage and already has her being compared to former American protégés Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie.

Yet Ko is staying put for the moment and hopes for at least another two to three years of ama-teur golf before she makes the jump into the pro ranks.

While she has already shown she has what it takes to meet and beat the best players in the world, Ko shows surprising maturity for one so young when she says, ‘there’s no hurry’.

Indeed the budding superstar of women’s golf has indicated she would like to graduate from high school in New Zealand before any thoughts of a life on tour are even considered.

“I want to play amateur [golf] for a couple of years,” Ko revealed at the British Women’s Open.

“I’m not trying to go there too quickly and I think there’s so much to do as an amateur.

“I want to graduate high school first back in New Zealand and I want to play amateur for a couple of years.”

“Hopefully when I do turn pro, I’ll be able to play on the LPGA.”

And while Ko’s game already looks capable of winning a major championship, when the time is right, there is no doubt playing two major cham-pionships this year has also given her something of a reality check, as well.

Ko described Royal Liverpool as one of the hard-est courses she had ever played, after finishing

tied for 17th (alongside Lexi Thompson) but a massive 18 strokes behind runaway winner Jiyai Shin.

That included a triple-bogey seven on the 14th hole, which effectively ended any hopes of a top-10 finish.

“The bunkers here are nearly as high as me,” she commented afterwards.

Still Ko, who plays her golf out of Gulf Harbour, the magnificent layout just north of Auckland, did go on to finish leading amateur, which she admitted was one of her ‘major’ goals coming into the week.

And her coach Guy Wilson won’t be trying to hustle her into the pro ranks either:

“The more events she plays well in, the more events she will get invites to,” Wilson said.

“Sure, there is not a lot left for Lydia to achieve in the amateur game.”

“But the more pro events she can play in as an amateur, the more she will be prepared when she does make the leap of faith.”

Ko will play in the World Amateur Team Champi-onships starting this week in Turkey.

At the age 15 and with two professional wins already under her belt, New Zealand’s Lydio Ko is determined to keep her feet firmly on the groundBY PAUL PRENDERGAST

RORy SELLING UP TO ShIFT STATESIDE?Rory McIlroy has set tongues wagging in North-

ern Ireland by placing his £2 million house out-

side Belfast on the market.

It has been rumoured for some time that McIlroy

would looked to establish his permanent base

in the United States after taking up PGA Tour

membership in 2012.

The 23-year-old Ulsterman is believed to be

house hunting with girlfriend, Swedish tennis ace

Caroline Wozniacki, in the Jupiter, Florida area

where he currently rents a home and where Ti-

ger Woods, Keegan Bradley and Lee Westwood

also live.

McIlroy took up a membership at the exclusive

Bear’s Club earlier this year.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, McIlroy’s

five-bedroom house on 14 acres features a prac-

tice area with putting green, driving range and

gym.

The owner’s perspective in the sale brochure

says “I have really enjoyed living here. It’s a real-

ly special place that has allowed me to relax and

unwind – when I get time!”

The world number one, who will spearhead Eu-

has been in tremendous form since winning his

CITy OF SyDNEy AMATEUR RETURNS TO MOORE PARK

This weekend sees the City of Sydney Amateur International returning to Moore Park with a number of Australia’s main amateurs competing.

The tournament was given a boost recently with the R&A granting the event world amateur rank-ing status and in recent years the City of Sydney Amateur has gained momentum attracting the cream of Australian amateur talent.

Significantly, the event has also been designat-ed as a Vardon event for entry into NSW State selection squads.

Ricki Kato, Dimi Papadatos, Daniel Bringolf and Ruben Sondjaja are confirmed starters for the

three round stroke event, which sees the cut of top-60 and ties competing in the 36-hole Sun-day round.

Last season, Kato collected the Tasmanian Open with a wire-to-wire victory for the 17-year-old’s first National Trial event title, although he has won numerous junior amateur events, including the Harvey Norman Junior and the Srixon Inter-national Junior.

At the 2012 Australian Amateur championships, Kato progressed to the quarter-finals with vic-tories over reigning Australian Amateur Stroke champion and number one seed, Cameron

Smith, and England’s Ashley Chesters.

Kato’s run for the national title was only cut short in the quarter-final by eventual winner, Germa-ny’s Marcel Schneider.

Papadatos played well recently in the US with a tied 4th place finish at the Sahalee Players Ama-teur which added to his three top-10 finishes in Australia before leaving.

Papadatos will have the added advantage of playing on his home course and should feature strongly in this event.

Daniel Bringolf’s game has been a little patchy since winning the 2011 Malaysian Open Ama-teur.

A quarter-final appearance at the Australian Am-ateur last March his best result since, although Bringolf made the cut at the British Amateur.

With a world ranking just under 150, Bringolf will be aiming to use this weekend’s event as he em-

The tournament enjoys a rich history with golf-ing greats such as Bruce Devlin, Graham Marsh, Jack Newton, David Graham, Frank Phillips, Ted Ball, Bob Stanton & Bill Dunk all former partici-pants.

Legendary amateurs Harry Berwick, Tony Gresh-am and Alan Waterson also made regular ap-pearances at the tournament.

The event has been gaining momentum in re-cent years. In 2008 the Australian Eisenhower Cup team used the City of Sydney as one of its pre-tournament warm up events.

WEBB MOVES BACK INSIDE ROLEx TOP 20Karrie Webb’s unfortunate final round 82, in the shocking conditions that plagued the final day at Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool last week, deflated a brave tilt for an eighth major championship and a fourth British Open.

Her final round saw her relegated to a tie for 5th, 12 shots behind eventual winner Jiyai Shin of Ko-rea.

However, the Hall of Famer’s finish allowed her to rise one spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings to Number 20, while the next best Australian, Katherine Hull, is ranked 57th.

Former Robina High students – Amy Yang and Haeji Kang – were ranked 11th and 59th respec-tively following the Open.

With her 2nd British Open victory, former world number one Shin climbed five places to number five while runner-up, Inbee Park, rose two places to 7th.

Despite an indifferent year by her standards, Tai-wan’s Yani Tseng is still a runaway leader at the top of the rankings ahead of U.S. Women’s Open champion, Na Yeon Choi of Korea.

Webb’s next tournament will be the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur from October 11th.

ShARK’S STONECUTTERS RIDGE OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Greg Norman described it as the perfect site for a golf course. Now the Great White Shark’s first signature course in Sydney has officially opened for business.

After months of sitting idly waiting for an expect-ed influx of members following a vote to transfer from the nearby Ashlar golf course, Stonecutters Ridge finally has some golfers flooding its fair-ways.

The 6,247m layout is expected to rate highly in the rankings of Australia’s top 100 courses.

And why not? Every other one of Norman’s lay-out in this country seem to figure somewhere in the rankings, including layouts like The Vintage, Sanctuary Lakes, Moonah, The Grand, Ellerston, The Glades, Pelican Waters and Brookwater.

“I fell in love with the Stonecutters Ridge site

because, as a designer, I look for certain move-ment in the terrain,” said Norman, who made several site visits to check on the progress of the new course.

“This property was special because the gaps be-tween the ridges were almost perfect for a golf hole.“

“There wasn’t a whole lot of earth-moving to do here - you could actually just do your layout, put the greens in the right places and put your tees in there and just go with it.”

Stonecutters Ridge, in the Sydney suburb of Cole-bee, meanders along Eastern Creek through the rolling topography of the site.

Golfers will no doubt come from everywhere

to check the place out and stroll through pic-turesque fairways, complemented by Norman’s trademark water features and spectacular natu-ral bushland.

Intimidating bunkers, challenging greens and impressive water features are all hallmarks of a Greg Norman design.

OVERLOOKED hARRINGTON REMAINS A TEAM PLAyER AT hOME

American Hunter Mahan says he won’t watch a single shot.

Yet Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, the other high-profile player to narrowly miss a spot in this week’s Ryder Cup, says he’ll ride every putt and watch every stroke his European buddies make in the year’s biggest golf event.

Mahan and Harrington were both considered and subsequently considered unlucky not to be wild-card picks for the Ryder Cup.

Mahan says he won’t watch the Cup but will be content to check the scores at the end of each day’s play.

On the other hand, Harrington will be at home glued to his television set.

“I watch every shot hit on TV. I’ll have myself a golf-fest. I’ll really get into it,” Harrington said.

“It’s a big deal to Europe that we win the Ryder Cup and I’m cheering for the boys.

“The Americans have a slight advantage because they are at home.

“But the teams are evenly matched.

“It will come down to whichever one turns up the best. It is that tight.”

Harrington’s non-selection ended a run of six straight Ryder Cup appearances and he now ad-mits “even the dogs in the street knew I wasn’t going to get a wildcard pick”.

But not being a member of the European Team

means not enjoying the excitement of the world’s biggest golfing occasion.

“There was an incredible amount of pressure back in 2010,” Harrington said.

“But this time around I had come to terms with the fact that I couldn’t play myself into the team, whatever I did after the USPGA.

“I was very comfortable with the process. I am a great believer that you have to play yourself into the team automatically and I didn’t do that on merit.

“There are a lot of very good players out there and the spots dwindle very quickly.”

And don’t discount Harrington from making a seventh Ryder Cup showing in 2014.

“To make the 2014 Ryder Cup I need to play well now,” he said.

“I need to get myself in position. My push for 2014 starts right now.

“I feel I am playing great golf but I want to be inside that top 50 because it’s supremely hard for someone outside to get in the team auto-matically.

“You can do it with a couple of wins but two wins is a big year.”

The Ryder Cup is contested every two years with the venue moving between courses in the Unit-ed States and Europe.

The 2012 contest will take place from 28-30 Sep-tember at Medinah Country Club in Illinois - the home of the 2006 PGA Championship.

The 2014 contest will move back to Europe at the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perth & Kinross, Scotland.

Since its inception in 1927, the US have won 25 matches versus Europe with 8.

While American Hunter Mahan has made it clear he won’t be watching his team this week, Padraig Harrington will be riding every puttBY MICHAEL COURT AND BERNIE McGUIRE

RYDER CUP

ThE RyDER CUP SPECTACLE hUNTER MAhAN CAN’T BEAR TO WATChWhile Hunter Mahan wishes the US Team all the best, he won’t be watching it himself

While the world waits for the star-studded Ryder Cup matches at Medinah Country Club from 28 - 30 September, a player that most considered a lock to be on the US Team for most of 2012 won’t be able to bring himself to watch.

Sure, Hunter Mahan’s form had gone cold lately in comparison to the four selections captain Da-vis Love III made (Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker) following the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, but he might have expected more after finishing only one spot out of automatic qualification following the PGA Championship.

Mahan is a two-time winner on Tour this year, in-cluding the World Golf Championship Accenture Matchplay event in February where he trounced current world number one Rory McIlroy in the final, factors Mahan might have thought would have swayed Love III to look his way.

His recent track record in team play is also strong. Mahan was a member of the last two Ryder Cups teams, holing one of the most crucial putts at Valhalla in 2008 and losing in a close tussle with Graeme McDowell in the final match in 2010.

He was also a solid performer in the U.S. teams’ Presidents Cup victory at Royal Melbourne, soundly defeating Jason Day in the final day sin-gles in the process.

So you can imagine, his omission cut deep and Mahan’s play at the BMW Championship the fol-lowing week at Crooked Stick showed how much it impacted on him.

He said he felt ‘empty’ at Crooked Stick, closing with an 80-77 weekend to finish in last place at 12-over 300 to be 32 shots off the pace.

“It was hard, harder than I thought,” Mahan said

BY PAUL PRENDERGAST

of the week. “Golf is hard right now. I just can’t deal with it all. It doesn’t have much appeal. It feels empty. I tried to patch things together, change putters, a quick fix, but at the end of the day, I’m out of will.”

Mahan admits he would struggle to bring him-self to watch the Cup matches later this month. “I don’t think so,” Mahan said.

“Being there, having gone through it ... it’s tough to say that too.”

“You have so many friends on the team and you want them to do well. I don’t feel good saying that, but I think it would be hard to sit and watch it.”

The week off before the Tour Championship in Atlanta allowed Mahan time to regroup and he responded in fine fashion, shooting a final round 66 to move up the field to tie for 8th at East Lake.

He will now try to enjoy some time off with his wife to distract himself from the matches going on without him in Chicago.

Whatever he plans to do this week, Mahan did concede that he would not completely block out how his friends are going as they try to snatch the Cup back from the Europeans.

“I’ll watch the match results each game, at the end of each day.” he said.

OLAZABAL CALLS FOR MCILROy TO STEP UP

Now that he’s world number one you can expect young Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy to take on a lot more responsibility, according to his Ry-der Cup captain Jose-Maria Olazabal. And for-mer captain Colin Montgomerie agrees.

Two years ago a curly-haired younger version of McIlroy went to Celtic Manor as one of six wide-eyed European rookies looking, listening and learning.

Now McIlroy has spoken of what he felt was now an obligation, as a two-time major winner and currently the game’s best player, to be more out-spoken and take more of a leading role in the

European Team room.

“Rory and everyone in the team have to be lead-ers in a way because at the end of the day they have to deliver,” Olazabal explained.

“I will be relying on the big guns in our Ryder Cup team and Rory is now one of those big guns.

“Rory has been playing really well and his win in Boston is what you sort of expect from him now.

“You expect that kind of discipline from the No. 1 player in the world.”

Monty was so confident of McIlroy he threw him

into the deep end on the very first morning in Wales and he then played in all but one of the five sessions.

“It was difficult in Wales to look upon Rory as a rookie, which he was, given at the time he was No. 3 in the world,” said Monty.

“Rarely does that happen in the Ryder Cup team that you have a player so high up the rankings and competing in a Ryder Cup for the first time.

“So I would expect him to step up to the plate now.

“Two years ago Rory didn’t know what to expect of the Ryder Cup.

“But he knows what it’s all about now and I’m confident he will step up to the plate along with

some other more senior members of the team, the Donalds, the Westwoods, the McDowells and the Poulters.

“When Rory says something in the team room at Medinah it will mean more now because he’s actually been there.

“And now he’s number one in the world, and with two major victories under his belt he should be saying things.”

COUPLES NAMED IN 2013 GOLF hALL OF FAME CLASS

Fred Couples admits he doesn’t consider himself a ‘great’ player – not even at the age of 52.

Yet the 1992 Masters champion and winner of 15 titles on the PGA Tour certainly rates among the most pop-ular players in world golf.

So there may be criticism, but there will be a lot more backslapping when it comes to Couples being voted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

US PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem made the announcement that Couples would be lauded as part of the 2013 class in May in Sawgrass, Florida at St Au-gustine.

“Freddy is one of those unique players whose talent and accomplishments are Hall-of-Fame calibre, as are his personality and popularity,” Finchem said.

“He’s been a fan favourite for decades, thanks to not only his significant achievements on the golf course, but also because of his relatable, friendly manner that has connected him to fans around the world.”

Couples is revered around the world for his seeming-ly effortless golf swing. He earned the name “Boom Boom” because of his long driving.

It carried him to the top of the game, when he won the 1992 Masters on the way to becoming the first Amer-ican player to reach number one in the Official World Golf Rankings.

He was at his peak in the early 1990s, winning the PGA Tour Player of the Year and the Vardon Trophy in 1991 and 1992. He also won two Players Championship ti-tles (1984 & 1996).

Couples played on five Ryder Cup teams, helping the Americans to victories in 1991 and 1993.

He is also one of Davis Love III’s assistant captains for this week’s Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club and will be captain of the US team in next year’s President’s Cup.

Typically Couples was as laid-back as ever when he heard of his latest honour:

“For me, at my age of 52, I think it’s certainly a great honour and great timing,” he said.

“There are other people in the Hall of Fame that are maybe good players. But good is a good thing.”

“I’ve been good at it for a long time, and I hope to continue to play a few more years.”

STRICKER WINS 2012 PAyNE STEWART AWARDSteve Stricker has been named the 2012 winner of the Payne Stewart Award and was honoured at a private reception at the TOUR Champion-ship in Atlanta last week.

The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a player sharing Stewart’s respect for the tradi-tions of the game, his commitment to upholding the game’s heritage of charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and con-duct.

Stewart was an 11-time winner on the PGA Tour and World Golf Hall of Fame member who died tragically the week of the Tour Championship in 1999.

“This award means a great deal to the players on the PGA Tour and I am truly grateful to be the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award,” said Stricker. “I was fortunate enough to spend time with and compete against Payne and I watched how he handled himself on the course.”

Stricker becomes the 15th recipient of the award joining inaugural winners Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer (2000), Ben Cren-shaw (2001), Nick Price (2002), Tom Watson (2003), Jay Haas (2004), Brad Faxon (2005), Gary Player (2006), Hal Sutton (2007), Davis Love III (2008), Kenny Perry (2009), Tom Lehman (2010) and David Toms (2011).

Stricker, 45, has won nine of his 12 PGA Tour titles since turning 40 after returning from a de-bilitating slump between the 2003 - 05 seasons.

Stricker has played for the US in two Ryder Cup and four Presidents Cups and will again be a part of the US Ryder Cup Team this week in Chicago.
