GOLF COURSE CONSTRUCTION: GROW-IN PHIWSOPHIES by TERRY BUCHEN, CGCS Superintendent, Double Eagle Club, Galena, Ohio O NEOF THE MOST specialized and least understood challenges ever faced by a golf course superintendent is overseeing the construction and subse- quent grow-in of a new golf course. In this unique area of turfgrass management, there is a lot of art to go along with the science. The Double Eagle Club in Galena, Ohio (north of Columbus), was designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf. It was con- structed by the Wadsworth Golf Construc- tion Company of Plainfield, lllinois, using cool-season grasses. Double Eagle was grown-in during 1991 and opened for play in 1992. In the following article I would like to share some of the trials and tribulations of being an owner's representative and golf course superintendent at the Double Eagle Club, as well as discuss points experienced from the grow-in of 10 other golf courses. Overview It is safe to say that: 1. After the initial seeding and when the sprinklers are turned on for the fIrst watering, the most critical time during grow-in is the first three weeks! 2. Growing-in newly planted turf will require up to 10 times more fertilization (for a limited period of time) than an existing golf course practicing routine maintenance. 3. Preventative fungicide applications should be applied at higher rates, with shorter intervals between applications, as recommended by the pesticide label. 4. The common goal of the owner, archi- tect, contractor, and superintendent always is to grow-in the turf with minimal soil erosion as fast as agronomically possible. The grow-in budget usually is the deter- mining factor. Fairways Penntrio creeping bentgrass was planted at 2 pounds pure live seed (PLS) per 1,000 square feet with a Brillion Turf-Maker Seeder. The soil physical analysis indicated a silt loam composition for the 6- to 8-inch depth of topsoil. Soil nutrient tests revealed defIciencies in N-P-K, a soil pH range of 6 to 7, and acceptable minor nutrient levels. Atrazine levels were checked, even though the property had not be farmed in eight years, and minimal amounts were detected. After experimenting with high rates of N-P-K during prior grow-ins, we decided to go with Scott's Pro-Turf fertilizer, a homo- geneous product that is safe for young turf. Overview

It is safe to say that:1. After the initial seeding and when the

Fairways

Our goals and concerns were:1. A heavy pre-plant fertilizer application

was needed because of the frequent irriga-tion cycles used. In addition, granularSubdue also was applied to control damp-ing-off.

2. My experience has been that fertiga-tion should be used only as a supplementto a granular fertilizer program, especiallyduring periods of excessive rainfall and/orcool temperatures when the sprinklers arenot used very often.

3. The heavy, granular pre-plant fertilizerapplication was sufficient to last for the firstthree weeks. After this period, the irrigationcycle was "backed off," allowing for addi-tional granular applications to keep thegrow-in proceeding at a fast pace. We theninitiated a granular fertilizer program with apush-type rotary spreader. Once the turf wasfar enough along and the soil firm enough, atruckster/tractor-mounted spreader was used,usually after the three- to five-week periodand beyond.

4. A second Subdue granular preventativefungicide application usually was madeduring the initial three-week period, usingpush-type rotary spreaders. The soil and turfwere too soft and weak to allow any typeof heavy spray equipment. All subsequentpreventative spray applications were madewith a walk-behind spray boom or truckster-mounted 100-gallon sprayer with a rear-mounted boom.

5. All sloped areas were straw mulched,with the material blown into place and then"crimped" in with tractor-drawn and push-type crimper implements.

The new turf was mowed with a light-weight triplex utility unit for the first fewmowings, using solid rollers front and rear.Mowing was done in the afternoons only,and the clippings were not collected. Afterthe first few mowings, a five-plex mower,with solid rollers front and rear, was usedwith the grass catchers. In catching theclippings early on, the golf course was keptfirm, 'with a minimum amount of thatchpresent. In this case, a fairway topdressingprogram was initiated from the start. Thesolid rollers, both front and rear, werechanged to the Whiele rollers as soon as theturf was knitted-in and matured enough.

In my opinion, one of the many "secrets"to a successful grow-in is the timing of thefirst mowing. Allow the grass blades to "lea/-out" to the two- to three-leaf stage beforeinitiating the very first cut. If the new turf iscut too short on the first mowing, the newgrass will be severely set back.

Roughs

Roughs were seeded with a blend ofbluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescueat 4 pounds PLS per 1,000 square feet and

fertilized similarly to the fairway program.No preventative fungicide program wasneeded. Seed germination was earlier thannormal due to the extra nutrient boost, andthe new turf was successfully established.Sod was used around all sand bunkersadjacent to fairways, greenside bunkers, oneto five strips around each tee, and whereneeded around green banks. For easieraccess, the new sod, which closely matchedthe seed specs, was not initially mowed untilthree weeks after seeding when the waterwas backed off.

The roughs were fertilized and strawmulched similarly to the fairways, and thewater was decreased at the same time. Allnew sod was mown with rotary mowers withgrass catchers and then raked to collectextra clippings. Self-propelled rotaries wereused until the seeded turf was sufficientlyrooted to handle riding equipment.

Greens

The greens were seeded in two directionswith a drop seeder using Pennlinks creepingbentgrass at 2 pounds PLS per 1,000 squarefeet. A riding sand bunker rake with knobbytires was driven over the surface to com-pact and firm the seedbed. The depressionsfrom the tires help keep moisture in thesoil longer and do not have any long-termeffects on the smoothness of the green. Thedepressions flatten out over time fromirrigation, rainfall, and the rolling action ofthe mowers, and they totally disappear afterthe first heavy topdressing. It is amazinghow much seed germinates in the tiredepressions!

The root zone mixture was 85% sand and15% Canadian sphagnum peat moss. Anintermediate layer was not needed afterthorough testing of all subgrade materials. Itis always a good idea to run a nutrient soiltest of the root zone mix. Initial nutrientlevels of the seedbed mixture indicatedN-P-K levels were deficient and many minornutrients also were low. Nutrient levels wereinitially corrected with Scott's STEP granu-lar material, and another application wasmade during the 10th week after initialseeding.

Beginning with the third week, we used"The Sandwich" method of grow-in wherebythe turf was topdressed each week to bringthe turf level up, and the mowers were subse-quently lowered each week to bring the turflevel down.

The greens were much easier to fertilizein comparison with the fairways and roughs,as cart paths were nearby and the greensdid not footprint appreciably because of the15 inches per hour initial infiltration rate.Preventative fungicide applications weresimilar to the fairways, utilizing granularproducts for the first two applications.

Tees

Penncross creeping bentgrass was seededat 2 pounds PLS per 1,000 square feetsimilarly to the greens. The root zone mixwas the same as the greens, but was at a depthof six inches. No subgrade gravel or drain-age tile was used since the subsurface of thesoil was sloped 2% to the rear. The root zonemix was graded perfectly level for what wefelt were ideal playing conditions. [Editor'snote: We sometimes see tees constructedwith a slight front-to-back slope.) Fertiliza-tion, pesticide applications, and topdress-ing programs were similar to greens.

Some Thoughts for aSuccessful Grow-in

Fertilization

The first three weeks of heavy wateringmakes it very difficult to fertilize greens,

tees, and especially fairways and roughs. Usea safe, homogeneous fertilizer product that isa proven winner and that you are personallyfamilar with. You must know how it willrelease the major nutrients. Trying to testunfamiliar or unproven products duringgrow-in is very difficult and risky at best.Fertigation works as a supplement to granu-lar fertilizers.

Keep the phosphorus and potassium levelshigh to promote top growth and root develop-ment and to help prevent disease. During theinitial 10- to 12-week period, determinewhen to begin a routine maintenance fer-tilizer schedule. The heavy fertilizer appli-cations during the rapid grow-in periodcan be overdone, causing excessive thatch.Micronutrients should be added during theinitial seeding using a granular material toguard against excessive leaching, especiallyon sand-based greens and tees. (Remember,grow-in fertilization is just the opposite ofroutine maintenance!)

Fungicides

The initial fungicide application prior toturning on the sprinklers for the first timemust be a granular systemic fungicide. In myopinion, using a liquid and spraying bare soilis not very effective. A second application ofthe same product should be made two tothree weeks later, usually when the turf iswell established and after decreasing the fre-quent irrigation cycles. All subsequent pesti-cide applications can be sprayed, as the turfusually can handle the weight and trafficof a lOO-gallon truckster-mounted boomsprayer on the fairways and a walk-behindboom on greens and tees. Using treated grassseed does help, but the granular fungicideprogram must be used. This is the onlyproduct formulation that can withstand thefrequent irrigation and lush turf growth.

Pythium/damping-off is the main diseaseof concern with the high fertilizer rates. Ihave always used my "gut feeling" regarding

preventative broad-spectrum fungicide appli-cations and have never used them until afterthe three- to four-week period. There neverseems to be any reason to justify their use inthe early stages of grass development. Ifyou feel that a broad spectrum systemic/contact fungicide is needed, be careful.Some granular fungicides of this nature arenot safe for use on newly planted turf.

Watering Practices

Watering only during the daylight hoursworks best. "Wake up the new turf with adrink in the morning, and put itto bed withwater at dusk." This old saying is so verytrue. A good rule-of-thumb is to water everytwo to three hours with one to three turns ofthe sprinkler head during each cycle. Thebiggest mistakes made during grow-in arewith watering practices, where the soil isnot kept wet enough due to concerns abouterosion. To properly water a new seedbed, asmall amount of erosion usually occurs.

Once the seed is wet for the first time, itcannot be allowed to dry out even for theshortest period of time. It is best to wateronly with individual field controllers. Oneperson should water semi-automatically ona few holes and watch for over-watering andunder-watering, and turn off stuck sprinklerheads immediately. Except for initial testing,do not use the master irrigation controllerfor any type of watering during grow-in. Aperson must be there to properly monitorthe soil and turf.

Irrigation System Testing

Flush and test each sprinkler and all pip-ing for as long as is practical to help elimi-nate sprinkler head malfunctions. Mostleaks and stuck sprinkler heads can beeliminated by flushing during installationand once again before grassing begins.

Mulching

The best results with grassing have beenwitnessed when fairways and roughs aremulched with hay or straw, depending onwhat is locally available, to keep the soilmoist and to help guard against unneces-sary soil erosion. The mulch should not bespread so thick that the new turf is smoth-ered. It should be "tucked" in with a tractorand hand-operated devices. Talk to the localsupplier about possible weed seed contami-nation in the straw; the cleaner, the better.

Preemergent Herbicides

Consider using Siduron preemergentherbicide, with a starter-type fertilizer as thecarrier, on the bentgrass fairways. I haveseen anywhere from fair to excellent resultsachieved for a two- to three-week periodagainst weed seed germination. Do not be

Proper fertilization, preventative fungicide applications, proper watercycles, and mulching of slopes are critical for a successful grow-in.

Bunkers

Consider installing the bunker sand andsodding around the bunkers at the same time,just prior to seedbed preparation. Coordina-tion of hand-watering the sod is importantto properly water the newly sodded turfwithout washing soil into the newly placedbunker sand. For ease of irrigation, install aquick-coupler valve next to all areas thatare going to be sodded. Algae may appear onthe surface of the bunker sand during thefIrst three weeks of watering, but will dis-appear after the irrigation cycles are reduced.

Drainage Grates

Sodding around drainage grates, bothin the fairways and the roughs, is recom-mended. The addition of hay or straw balesor a silt fence is an extra precautionarymeasure to keep the drains from becoming"silted over" with eroded soil. Straw mulchplaced away from the catch basins willfurther ensure better results.

Construction Progress

The last 5% of the construction phaseis the busiest time. On average, up to onehole a day can be totally fmished andturned over to the superintendent for his/her grow-in expertise. Have all equipment,materials, chemicals, and fertilizers on handwell before each hole is completed.

Equipment

Again, stay with proven winners as itpertains to any equipment purchases for thegrow-in. I always have purchased equipmentI was personally familiar with because mal-functions can be disastrous. I have used"demos" of unfamiliar equipment, but it isdifficult, at best, to spend much time evalu-ating the equipment. Grow-in is a very busytime.

Take extra precautions against the con-struction dust. Air filters on all equipmentshould be cleaned and checked many timesthroughout the day. Also, change engine oilfrequently.

Mowing

For the first mowing, let the grass blades"leaf out" by letting the turf grow about

50% higher than the desired first mowingheight. Always use solid rollers, front andrear, until the turf is established. The grassblades should be at least in the two- tothree-leaf stage before the first cut is initi-ated. Grow-in is made particularly chal-lenging by the many different mowingheights encountered at the same time asgreens, tees, fairways, and roughs are indifferent stages of maturity. We label indi-vidual mowers with the machine's precisemowing height to avoid confusion andcostly mistakes.

Seeding Rates

Use the pure live seed (PLS) method forall seeding rates: Purity x Germination =Pure Live Seed %. Divide the PLS figureinto the desired seeding rate to determinethe actual seeding rate needed for 100%PLS. Work with the contractor to doublecheck all seeding rates and equipment cali-brations. If a different type of seed is usedwith any seeding equipment, blow theseeders out with air to avoid undesired seedcontamination.

Teamwork

The owner, architect, contractor, andsuperintendent must all work as a team toachieve the desired objective - the openingof the new course. Leave your ego at homeand communicate and help each other outduring the busy times, especially during irri-gation testing and subsequent grassing.Strive for a good, professional relationshipbefore and after the construction is com-pleted, and you will sleep better at night.

Summary

The fascination of the game of golf isthat no two courses are alike. This holdstrue for building and growing-in a new golfcourse as well as playing the game. In thisarticle I've attempted to detail a numberof the techniques used to grow-in golfcourses with which I have been associated.Obviously, there are other ways to dothings. Nonetheless, I hope this articlehelps the turfgrass manager with one of thegreatest and most rewarding challengesin our profession.
