Dear Goldthwait Friends, Marsh Restoration: I am delighted to let you know that we have made exceptional progress in our marsh restoration efforts. Our three-year restoration plan was first approved in 2016 and was extended for a further three years in 2019. Goldthwait overcame a huge challenge as our major contractor, the North East Massachusetts Mosquito Control (NEMMC) suddenly pulled out of the project in 2017 stating that they had other priorities. The NEMMC had promised to perform the marsh restoration work at no charge to Goldthwait, so this was a huge blow. However, with terrific support from our donors and efforts by our consultant DeRosa Environmental Consulting and their contractor WJC services, we managed to complete our perimeter ditch to the March in 2019. It is at the edge of the marsh providing good flow for the salt marsh. Since the start of the restoration work in 2016 we have spent almost $200,000. This restoration work would not have been possible without the efforts of Margaret Bacon and her company the Macquarie group who contributed over AU$100,000 during this period.

Part of the restoration work was to remove fill that had been pushed into the marsh many years ago, when there was plans to develop the salt marsh as a housing project. Goldthwait increased the salt marsh by about one acre representing almost 10% increase. The soil was sifted, cleaned and used on site avoiding costly and environmentally difficult disposal of the soil. During this restoration period, Goldthwait petitioned the town and the selectmen to fix the broken culvert wall at the Devereux parking lot. All the water was draining off the parking lot into the marsh and blocking the flow of salt water into and out of the marsh. In 2018, a new drainage system was built and it is working well allowing better flow of the tidal salt water.

Our final effort in the restoration effort is to clear the remaining diches that need to be cleared and especially ditches linking the four town drains that enter one side of the marsh and drain through the marsh. Since these drains flow fresh water into the marsh, they feed invasive plants. The myriad of birds – snowy owls, white herons, blue herons, killdeer, red tailed hawks and the foxes show that the marsh restoration work has proceeded well and we are pleased that the health of the marsh gets better each year.

Concert and Beach use: We had a wonderful concert with Mason Dearing and Jeanie Stahl (please see the concert section of the report). It was well attended and the refreshments included delicious lobster rolls. We also had overnight campouts of the Cub, Girl and Boy Scouts. We had work performed by the Marblehead High School. Involving these youth groups in the marsh is an important goal in having them adopt the marsh and look after it as they grow older.

Thank you for your help and support making the restoration possible.

The evening of the summer concert at Goldthwait Reservation could not have been more serene. The recently emerging salt marsh grasses provided a brilliant green backdrop, the pink and white blooms of the surrounding rugosa rose were buzzing with bees, and the wild sweet pea trailing along the cobble dune radiated its perfect pastel colors. To make the setting even more lovely, the Goldthwait directors, trustees, and volunteers added extra touches of color with beautiful potted perennials and bouquets.

The evening started with a meet and greet with the concert stars, where delicious foods—including lobster rolls, chicken salad, broccoli and garden salads, and fine cheeses—were elegantly served alongside outstanding wines. Mingling amongst the audience were the performers, including the famous Marblehead duo Jeanie Stahl and Mason Daring, “the darlings of the folk music scene” according to the Boston Globe. Mason, famous for his many soundtracks to John Sayles movies and for the soundtrack of such film hits like The Secret of Roan Inish and Music of the Heart, had previously lived here on Goldthwait Road—only a few steps away from the grassy picnic area where the concert’s white tent now stood. Duke Levine, who according to the Boston Phoenix is “best known as an MVP for hire by Peter Wolf, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and others,” was also among the crowd. Duke, who is currently a Malden resident, wowed the Marblehead crowd with the pleasing sound of his beautiful guitar later in the show. Also attending was Stuart Schulman of Groton, who earlier in his career played pop music for well-known artists such as Jonathan Edwards, Tom Rush, and Kate and Ann McGarrigle from Canada. As the crowd soon would find out, Stuart could bring a certain magic to his violin melodies that resonated with the serenity of the salt marsh.

Jim Trick of Marblehead, who performs regularly in the greater Boston area at venues like Club Passim, brought emotion and heart to the opening act of the concert with his rich, beautiful voice, relatable lyrics, and appealing songs. True to his engaging personality, he teased audience members in the beach (cheap) seats about being the ones who own the enormous yachts in Marblehead harbor. His fun and welcoming manner and inspirational music made for a perfect first half of the evening. After Jim’s engaging performance, an intermission allowed audience members to partake in more wine sampling— those which were expertly suggested by George Shube, and then specifically selected by the concert wine tasting committee (one of the more sought-after jobs in preparing and presenting this concert.) The second half of the concert was a splendid duet performance by Mason and Jeanie, accompanied by the romance and passion of Stuart’s violin and the power, strength, and additional melody of Duke’s guitar. Mason and Jeanie sang like birds courting—sometimes together in unison, sometimes apart in point and counterpoint—but always swooping and soaring. One particular favorite was the song about young lovers at Rosalie’s Restaurant (known to all Marbleheaders of the 1980s) made all the more sentimental with Jeanie’s ethereal voice combined with Mason’s tender-like strum of the guitar. Topping it off with the lyrical, moving, and very personal Marblehead Morning, Jeannie and Mason were able to bring the crowd to their feet.

As the evening came to an end, with the sun long past setting and the evening stars shining down, concert-goers dispersed into the darkness, but could be heard humming a few tunes as they departed. One audience member rejoiced that she moved to Marblehead because of Mason and Jeanie’s song, Marblehead Morning. Times like this we realize how fortunate we are to live in this special place. We are privileged to have a natural resource like the Goldthwait Reservation in our back yards and are even luckier to be surrounded by people who continually help support the maintenance and restoration of the salt marsh and the protection of its wildlife inhabitants. Goldthwait Reservation, Inc. thanks everyone for their ticket purchases, and their constant support and encouragement over the years. With the help from the people of Marblehead, great progress has been made in restoring the salt marsh to its former beauty.

The concert was made possible by the generosity of the following individuals and organizations: Jeanie Stahl, Mason Daring, Duke Levine, Stuart Schulman, Jim Trick, Gene Arnould, Tamie and Twig Burke, Suzanne Conway, Christine Cudihy, Jeff Doherty, Alexander Hare, Lynda and Paul Hare, Nina and David Hutchison, Nancy and Tim Geraghty (in particular for Nancy’s beautiful bouquets), Steve and Nan Haskell, Jeanne and Jack Kleene, Susan Lavoie, Fiona and Geoff Lubbock, Francesca Lubbock, Merel and Chris Monaco, David Nickerson(Bay State Event Solutions), Linda Quealy, Maeve Rice, Betsy Rickards, Chris Rogers, George Shube, Apex Tent, The Marblehead Reporter, and The Marblehead TV (MHTV).

Beach Update Annual Clean up – As usual we had a wonderful assemblage of volunteers

Beach - was kept meticulously clean by Christine Cudihy, Carolyn Kennedy and Fiona Lubbock.

Parking lot – Carolyn Kennedy managed the beach/picnic and parking area team: Frankie Kennedy; Christian Penkrat; and Stella Monaco.

Marsh Work – Nicholas Schluter managed the marsh maintenance and restoration team: Charlie Minney; Paul Heffernan; Sean Heffernan; Joe Krell; Jack Maniaci; Grady McGowan; Thomas Quigley; Christian Schluter; Loch Sheridan; Tyler Sitnikov; and Max White.

Sign board and the walkway - was maintained beautifully by Jeff Doherty.

Permits – fire permits for beach rocks and the fire pit and permits and reservations for larger activities are managed by permit coordinator, Jeanne Kleene. There were four separate Scout events (Girl, Boy and Cub Scouts overnights and a Girl Scout Sing Along) and many very nice friends and family gatherings and birthday parties. There was a family Celebration of Life/Memorial, a renewal of vows, a wedding and a church family picnic. Permits were issued for 25 different activities, with fire permits issued for most of those. New contributors signed up and donated. $500 in direct fees were received. We require a deposit to ensure clean up. Nearly all the guests complied with the rules (e.g. liquor liability insurance where needed) and cleaning up afterwards.

Late night revelers - in prior years we have had late night revelers that have disturbed the neighbors but for the last several years we did not need to hire any police details. Outreach - the Directors continue to work together to educate the community about the importance of protecting our salt marsh through published articles in local papers, guest lecturers, and events. Stargazing events were cancelled due to poor night sky visibility.

Marblehead High School Service Day: As in past few years, and as part of their Community Service Day, the students of Marblehead High School did their school and the community proud. The enthusiasm and energy with which they tackled the different tasks offered to them was impressive. Relocating rocks, weeding, replacing board walk planks and removing plastic and unwanted debris from our precious coastal area....nothing was too big a task for these awesome young men and women. They made a difference, one rock, one weed, one plank and one plastic bottle at a time. We are very grateful to them all for helping clean up our beautiful reservation and promoting environmental stewardship. The Goldthwait members that organized and directed the work are to be commended for their excellent efforts. We are now looking forward to their next visit to Goldthwait!

Marsh Update Marsh Restoration Plan On 8th April 2016, the Marblehead Conservation Commission (ConCom) approved Goldthwait’s restoration plan prepared by DeRosa Environmental Consulting (DeRosa) with consultation from the North East Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management (NEMMC). It was filed with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) under file number DEP 40-1232. The permit was for three years and in March of 2019, the ConCom extended the permit for a further three years. The filing stated “This Notice of Intent (NOI) requests the approval of the Commission to reclaim pre-existing ditches throughout Goldthwait Reservation, and use herbicides to control and eliminate invasive species. The project also involves mechanical invasive plant control, salt marsh and freshwater wetland restoration, and structural improvements. “ It also stated “This reclamation work will be conducted under the authority of the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District (the “District”). In addition, gravel that has eroded from the parking area into the salt marsh will be removed, restoring portions of the salt marsh and greatly increasing water quality on the Reservation. Fill will also be removed from the freshwater wetland in the northwestern corner of the Reservation.” The NEMMC has committed to perform the reclamation work at no charge to Goldthwait. However, in 2018, Roy Melnick Executive Director of the NEMMC, stated that he would no longer honor the commitment to perform the restoration. He explained that the NEMMC no longer performs preventative maintenance. He determined that there was no immediate threat of mosquitoes in the Goldthwait marsh and that he would therefore perform none of the restoration work. Fortunately, DeRosa using their environmentally trained contractor W.J.C. Services, has managed to: reclaim the preexisting perimeter ditches (outlined in DEP 40-525 8/21/1996); remove the gravel and fill by the parking area; and remove the fill in the Northeast corner of the marsh. The work has been excellently performed and the cost has been met with extremely generous donations by our contributors. A good deal of the fill was used to level a lawn for a house on Orchard Street and most of the remaining fill was used to replant the grassy picnic area by the parking lot/fire pit. Disposal of soil contaminated with seeds or vestiges of invasive species is expensive and using the soil as we have, represents an outstandingly beneficial environmental solution. The levelling of the lawn will reduce fresh water runoff into the marsh. Fresh water runoff reduces the salinity of the marsh which encourages the growth of invasive plants. Perimeter Ditch Goldthwait’s environmental contractor W.J.C. Services has now reclaimed the pre-existing perimeter ditches which is a great success. Ditch Clearing The NEMMC identified twenty ditches that needed some clearing. It cleared several in 2017 but three or four required additional work which we will try to effect by hand in 2020. The drains also bring more than a ton of sand, silt and stones into the marsh each year which provide a breeding ground for invasive plants unless the silt is removed. Earlier this year, a group of individuals cleared the critical central channel from the middle of the street to the middle of the marsh by hand. The group was led by Tim Geraghty and was supported by Tom Carroll, Geoff Lubbock and Jeff Doherty. The clearing of the central channel is critical since 27 town drains combine to feed into this portion of the marsh from the drain pipe in the middle of Phillips Street. Prior to this trench being cleared earlier this year, it was 50% blocked. Town Support The Town of Marblehead Water & Sewer Department commissioned a report titled “Goldthwait Reservation Salt Marsh Drainage Evaluation” prepared by Haley and Ward, Inc. (HW) Part of the report dealt with the state of the town culvert at the edge of the marsh near Beach Street and the culvert leading from the marsh to the harbor. The report showed that the culvert was in relatively good shape with no blockages. The free flow of water is very important to the marsh and this was good news. Another part of the report dealt with marsh restoration and maintenance. This part of the report was unfortunately erroneous and misleading as the neither the Water and Sewer Department nor HW contacted Goldthwait prior to the report being completed and they did not review the restoration and maintenance plans produced by Goldthwait’s environmental consultants that were review and approved by Marblehead’s Conservation Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection. HW also concluded that there were no constrictions on the flow of water into the marsh from the culvert under the Devereux parking lot. In fact, there is a very serious restriction with this small culvert that is quarter of a mile long. The constriction is so severe that high tide in the marsh can be an hour later than high tide in the harbor.

Overview: Goldthwait Reservation is slightly more than 16 acres, 1 ½ acres of which are recreation land and the rest is conservation land. In describing the work in the reservation, we start at the Northwest corner (the corner of Orchard Street

and Beach Street and progress clockwise around the reservation). Northwest Corner

The area of greatest change has been the Northeast corner where we removed a significant amount of fill in 2016 and restored the perimeter trench at the edge of the marsh. The area where we removed the earth has been reseeded and looks very attractive. We continue to remove the Japanese knotweed by hand and it continues to be reduced significantly. Herbicides have not been particularly effective in eliminating knotweed; hand pulling/cutting has been much more effective. Our goal in 2020 is to prepare a wildlife corridor plan for this area. We continue to cut and treat the phragmites in this area.

. Northwest corner looking East Northwest corner looking south

North Boundary (parallel to Beach Street) Area in front of the houses The existing trench was cleared by hand by our employees and flows well. The Marblehead Water and Sewer Department completed a study of the Culvert at the edge of the marsh and found it to be in relatively good condition and without blockages. They provided Goldthwait with a copy of the videos taken of the inside of the culvert, which allowed Goldthwait to identify an opening to the culvert on the Beach Street side which had been blocked and was causing the adjacent property owner flooding problems on their lawn. Goldthwait removed the blockage and the flooding issue appears to be resolved.

Area by the Park and Rec Building Trees and branches have fallen into the marsh and need to be removed. The whole area could be cleaned up and it would be a good project for the Marblehead High School students in 2020.

Northeast Corner

Culvert Wall by Devereux Parking lot: The collapsed wall of the culvert by the Devereux parking lot has been repaired and is working well with two drains added to this area. The planted bushes and grass have grown in successfully. In 2020, it will require some extra seeding and replacement of plants. Also, the main channel has some areas of restriction that should be removed to allow for the free flow of the water. The channel parallel to beach street has maintained its integrity and flows well. While most of the plants were added by the Town water department, Goldthwait added additional plants with the approval of the Conservation Committee.

Before After

Sand Pile corner of Devereux parking lot and the beach Prior to the survey by Donohoe in 2015, Goldthwait was unsure of the location of the property. The sign on the beach that welcomes people to Goldthwait was placed about 40 feet onto Goldthwait property. This resulted confusion by the town of where the Goldthwait property begins. As a result, the town pushed some sand onto Goldthwait which needs to be pushed back into the parking lot to avoid it being swept into the marsh by high tides. The sand also presents a very enticing ramp for vehicles to drive up. The town has offered to place boulders at the edge of our property to deter people driving onto our property. This area is also rather messy and by cleaning it up we hope that the dumping of trash will be reduced.

Bushes and Trash North East Corner Nicholas Schluter removed numerous knotweed plants on the border between the parking lot and Goldthwait by digging them out. There were tall phragmites on the boundary and also in the marsh area. The Northeast Corner had numerous invasive bushes, Japanese knotweed and phragmites. DeRosa Environmental and WJC Services cleared the invasive bushes in 2018 and the brush was disposed of in 2019. Continuous hand removal of the Japanese knotweed along with the cutting and treatment of the phragmites with Natures Avenge (made from oranges) has reduced them to less than 20% of their initial level.

Looking North looking North West

Rocky finger into the marsh (middle of beach/eastern side) There is a finger of rocks on the eastern side that projects into the marsh. We have been removing these with shovels and wheel barrows but the work is slow. Also, there are a large number of sumac trees that have grown this area that will need to be removed. Trenches – Eastern /sea side In 2018, stones were cleared from the three trenches leading from the beach into the marsh. One trench had a very good flow of sea water flowing through the rocks and by clearing the other two trenches, we have seen additional flows. Goldthwait Parking lot Berm The Japanese knotweed by the parking lot appears to be completely eliminated as has the pepperweed and the phragmites. This is a huge accomplishment. The newly created parking lot berm has prevented stones from being washed into the marsh from severe storms – a huge accomplishment. Garden area by the left walkway This was laid out in 2018 by Nancy Geraghty with the help of the Marblehead High School students. In 2019 this area was weeded and cutivated. Central beach plum area This was weeded with some new beach plums added in 2019. An invasive Rosa Ragosa was removed along with some poison ivy. Garden area by Sign This was created by Jeff Doherty in 2019 and flourishes. Grassy Area The area was overseeded by Lassana 2019 prior to the concert and has recovered well from the significant storm damage in 2018

Walkways The walkways were beautifully maintained by Jeff Doherty; Gary Ritter; Tim Geraghty and the Marblehead High School students.

Upper grassy area Many of the black locust invasive trees were cut down by the Marblehead students in 2018. Tim Geraghty and Tom Carroll removed many of the stumps in 2019. Some sumac and black cherry still need to be removed in 2020. The briar roses need to be pruned and trimmed. Two large Norway Maple trees were trimmed early in 2019, but even with that, it was significantly damaged in the August microburst. The tree needed to be taken down and removed. The Kley family generously donated money to Goldthwait to cover the cost. Boundary trench parallel to Phillips street by the parking lot Fill next to the parking lot was removed in 2018 and Bill Cuddy of W.J.C. Construction restored the perimeter trench at the edge of the marsh. Salt grass plants were added in 2018 and additional salt grass plants transplanted onto the cleared area in 2019. Forgione Landscaping cleared and reseeded this bank area in late 2019, while leaving the bee and butterfly plants in place. Boundary Trench parallel to Phillips up to Orchard street In 2018 the NEMMC used its rotary clearing trencher to clear this trench. The trench was not cleared to the original specifications and in addition the entrance to the trench was higher than the far end of the trench resulting in water being trapped. In 2019, Bill Cuddy reclaimed this preexisting ditch and used the removed earth to build the bank as proposed in the restoration plan. We now see small fish (mummichogs) in this trench. Boundary trench South West Corner Bill Cuddy reclaimed this trench. President Jeff Doherty did some magnificent work in installing extension piping to the existing drains into the area from drain pipes and sump pumps. The area was reseeded by Barbuzzi Landscaping which was generously paid for by the DiCenso family. Mid Orchard Street – Longfellow Road extension The right of way was cleared in 2018 and the fill at the edge of the marsh removed. In 2019, Bill Cuddy added piping to lower the end of the town drain pipe into the marsh – hereby removing considerable erosion at the outfall. It was covered and reseeded. Salt grass plants were added to this area in 2018 and the salt grass continues to grow in 2019. The banking has been maintained by Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd and it is attractive. The area by the Saltmarsh was overgrown with Forsythia and invasive plants and trees. The forsythia was cut down to about four feet and the invasive plants were removed.

Rights of Way

Goldthwait has rights of way down Longfellow Road, Mansion Road and Page Road (over by Beach street). These rights of way had been blocked by bushes, Japanese Knotweed and sumac. In 1985 Anita Poss, then counsel to the Board of Goldthwait wrote “the Board feels that it is very important to allow both visual and actual access to the saltmarsh land from Orchard Street, and to maintain a consistent position with respect to all of the Goldthwait easements.” This position has been consistently held since that time by subsequent boards. Two of the rights of ways have been cleared with one right of way still to be cleared. Clearing the rights of way have provided wonderful views of the beautiful marsh to neighbors and passersby and many appreciative comments have been received by the Goldthwait board. We thank the families abutting the rights of way for their help in keeping the rights ow way clear.

Invasive Species Elimination Pepperweed – THE NEMMC decided to not apply an herbicide to eliminate the pepperweed as they had previously agreed (at no cost to Goldthwait) and instead Goldthwait paid DeRosa Environmental Consulting to perform the work. The pepperweed appears completely eliminated. Knotweed – Hand-pulling by Goldthwait volunteers has reduced Knotweed by 90%. The only remaining area of any significance is in the Northeast corner. Phragmites – Many cuts and one application of Nature’s Avenger by DeRosa Environmental has reduced these considerably but it will probably require two more years for these to be completely eliminated. Phragmites have been eliminate 95%. Purple Loosestrife – There was very little loosestrife this year.

Marsh Denizens Coyotes, Foxes, Snowy Owls, Blue Herons, White Herons, Hawks, Killdeer and Snowy Egrets along with many other birds continue to grace our marsh. The flow of salt water allows the mummichogs to prosper giving back fish to the ocean and food for the seabirds. As the marsh improves, we see more and more of these lovely animals.

Financial Summary Revenues Net contributions from both donations and fundraising were $55,096 down significantly from $81,667 in 2018. The main reason is that one of our trustee’s employers contributed almost $50,000 in 2018. However, the Charles A. Mastronardi Foundation has contributed $5,000 and the Snave Foundation has contributed $1,000 in 2019 so we are working hard to bridge the gap. In spite of a fabulous concert, concert revenues were down.

Barbuzzi Landscaping ($1,002) filled in the sump pump and drainage pipes leading into marsh at the corner of Phillips and Orchard Streets. The DiCenso family generously donated money to pay for this work. Additional labor and supplies ($450) were required to install the drainage piping. DeRosa Environmental Consulting prepared our required 2018 annual report for the Conservation Commission and treated the pepperweed and phragmites. Forgione Landscaping cut and reseeded the area next to Philips Street by the parking lot. Debris removal in the parking lot was performed by Amaral. Rentall sold us a new weed whacker and serviced the weedwhackers (very unreliable weedwhackers this year). The tree next to 13 Goldthwait was trimmed early in the year (Fallon ($715) but it was hit by the microburst and had to come down (Ciccoria $1,800). W.H. Goodwin removed debris from the beach. W.J.C. Services completed the boundary trench by the parking lot ($2,000). W.J.C. Services also widened the trench parallel to Phillips street and extended the boundary trench by widening the existing trench from Phillips to Longfellow road ($7,134).
