With an out of sorts Thursday night training where the heavens all but opened up and the boys were wet and shiver-ing from the cold – it was good preparation for what would be in store for us come Sunday. Again, travelling out to Bagster Road the signs looked ominous; the weather wouldn’t be kind to us today and we knew we were short a couple players but Thursday night’s hard training would hold us in good stead; we were confi-dent. We were scheduled to start on time this week as we had an umpire; young Mitch was very good. As a team we talked about being tough and brave this week particularly because of the weather. But the boys wanted to perform well especially since it was Mother’s Day and they wanted to do it for their mums – GAME ON!!! Our start was immediate with the first bounce; a great contest from both Alby Bradshaw and Lachlan Anderson, got the ball into the forward line with Jordan Ruchs giving his mum a great gift by pointing at her in the crowd after he booted a goal with his celebration. That was the start we wanted. We continued to dominate the centre with Riley Baker again showing fantastic desperation. Our back line held strong with some nice defensive marks from Harry Slater and Oliver Ward. But we had great support from everyone on the field – you might not always get a touch but running to the right spots is where to start. Little Sammy Carter shows this every week and soon will have the ball on a string!! At the first break we had to congratulate ourselves for starting well and for ending that quarter with some strong team play. The second quarter started much like the first with strong performances from the centres like Brodie Mur-phy who seemed to get his hands on the ball a bit this quarter. Hamish Martyn and Lachy Anderson showed every-one that playing in front of your opponent in the backlines will earn you the ball. Riley Rosenburg had his best game for the Kookaburras and this quarter racked up the touches in the backline. The rebound from Alby this quarter was solid from defence and we had a few shots at goal from the forwards– but like last week, we didn’t quite get the re-wards until Jayden Djorem popped up straight in front of goal and slotted one through the big sticks!! At half time it felt like we had good control of the ball and were really trying to bring out our skills with some foot passes and handballs. They may not have all come off, but as we practice, we’ll improve and begin to transfer the ball to each other with better efficiency. The sky is clearing so let’s use the ball well this quarter, keep it up boys!!! The third quarter started and again our centres took control straight away. Salisbury’s backline were going to be under the pump this quarter! We got under way with a nice goal from Harry Slater who celebrated with a tight dou-ble fist pump before he was swamped with high fives from his team mates. Little Zak Big Heart again showed his experience with some great efforts and Caleb Zanker taking some clean ball and rebound from the back half. There was some behind the play incidents this quarter but we showed we’re about playing the ball with Jayden Jackman taking his share and bravely going on and getting his own ball and not being a part of any inappropriate play. Well done Jayden, that’s tough stuff!! This shows what type of team we are; we’re about fair play, skilful play, team work and FUN!! Who is Golden Grove Under 7 Gold? WE ARE!!! At 3 quarter time it looked like the rain was going to hold off and we could really turn it on this quarter. Come on boys!! We made a few late changes that saw a few extras where they shouldn’t be, but two minutes into the last quarter we’d sorted it out. The last quarter must’ve looked like pure skilful, team play domination from the Golden Grove U7 Gold boys. Ajay Visnyai and Bailey Casey in the centre were getting their hands on the ball and pumping it into the forward lines where Miller Jolly had a few big shots at goal. There was a great play from Adam Barnett in the backlines who took a courageous mark, back turned out of the pack and delivered the ball to Jayden Jackman in the centre who took off booted the ball into the forward lines where Hamish Martyn was given a free kick (but would’ve marked it any-way). Hamish came back off the mark and had a booming shot at goal – it might have been a little too far for Hamish as it didn’t quite make it, but that play gave us a fantastic reflection on our performance. Great work boys, you did it for your mums!!!! Highlight of the day was certainly Jordan Ruchs booting 5 goals with Jayden Djorem and Harry Slater both bagging 1 each. In summary we have improvement every week across the board. Last week we spoke about standing the mark, this week we had someone stand the mark at nearly every free kick and we played to the Umpires whistle and the Under 7 rules. We play Angle Vale this week on our home deck. The Owls are sure to be a strong side and the Kookaburra’s will need to bring their best for a great contest. Who is Golden Grove Under 7 Gold?! WE ARE!!!! Go Kookaburras!!!!

Under 8 Green A fantastic performance by the Under 8 Green boys on a cold and raining Friday night against Tea Tree Gully Red. The remarkable 18 goals and 7 points we kicked is a testament to all the hard work you've been putting in and our fierce desire to chase loose balls, kick to targets and play as a team. Such an impressive performance in really tough conditions - well done boys! The ball was very heavy from the rain so we quickly realised we needed to find shorter targets, and it didn't take long for this strategy to take effect. Our first score came from a solid mark in defence to Logan which then led to a chain of kicks from Liam to Louis to Jordan to Alex who then goaled! Blake was also busy getting a lot of the ball and finished with 1.2 for the quarter. Liam and Zach kept providing the opportunities in the centre and Jordan used his speed to chase down a couple loose balls and kick a goal. The second quarter opened with Owen getting a clearance down to Ryan, who marked it and kicked to Logan who scored a goal. With the tough conditions, sometimes we'd miss everything or score a point, but our forwards played amazing defence to keep the ball in our forward third for the majority of the quarter. Birthday boy Indy in particular worked hard getting intercepts in the forward line and finished with 2.1, while Jace did the same and finished with two points. Rhys also went for a run but the kick fell short, and Kam was solid for us in defence on the few times it got down there. Zach presented himself well in the third quarter in the forward lines, kicking two goals from marks early in the quar-ter. Mackye showed lots of fight for the ball and shared it around with a handball to Harley which resulted in Harley kicking a goal. Mackye was also rewarded for his hard work by later running in to kick a goal himself. Louis also showed off his skills with three goals coming from a range of hard-ball-gets and marks. Blake got amongst the play again in the last quarter, putting another 1.1 to his tally. Noah took a strong mark within range and kicked a goal, and also fought hard for the ball later but unfortunately missed the shot on goal. Jor-dan was all over the play again, taking marks and kicking another two goals. Jordan also showed his selflessness by giving off a handball to Alex who slotted the goal - a great example of the team-first attitude the boys have shown this year. Keep up the fantastic work!! Scorers: Louis 3.0, Jordan 3.0, Blake 2.3, Indy 2.1, Alex 2.0, Zach 2.0,

Logan 1.0, Mackye 1.0, Harley 1.0, Noah 1.0, Jace 0.2, Ryan 0.1

Under 8 Gold On a cold and wet Mother's Day, Under 8 Gold travelled to Hope Valley, with the conditions as muddy as ever!

The team got off to a cracking start, lead by captain Jordan Miller providing lots of drive from the centre, resulting in a six-goal opening term. James Gray played his first game for the year, and you could tell he was keen to make an impact, scoring an amazing long range goal. The defensive effort to keep the ball in our forward third was excellent, with Jack Goreing capital-ising on his great work with a couple of goals, along with "Mr Reliable" Braden Carpenter continuing his good form in the forward line. Hope Valley only managing to get it past the centre once in the first quarter which was a brilliant effort from our team.

Owen Jarrad had another fantastic game, reading the play so well, and his skills in defence are certainly a strength of his. Brooke Silby is continuing her strong start to the year to have one of her best games, and Bailey Maddeford's confidence is growing every week, giving him the chance to show his skills.

One of the characteristics of the team is making sure that everyone gets involved, and this was exemplified by an unselfish act by Tyson Walters in the last quarter, where he was directly in front of goal, but passed it to his team-mate Nathan Petrie (playing his first game for Under 8 Gold), who recorded his first ever goal for the Kookaburras just before the siren went - well done Nathan!

And well done to the whole team, who made sure that Mother's Day started off well for all the mums that do so much to support our kids playing football!

Goal Scorers: Braden Carpenter 2.1, Jack Goreing 2.0, Brooke Silby 2.0, Corey Edwards 2.0, Nathan Petrie 1.2, James Gray 1.1, Owen Jarrad 1.1, Matthew LeRay 1.1, Noah French 1.0, Jordan Miller 1.0, Kodi Landherr 1.0, Tho-mas Glen 0.1

Under 9 Gold The weather was perfect for footy against a strong Broadview team on Sunday, but our boys were determined to put on a good perform-ance for our mums on a special mother’s day.

I thought that the boys demonstrated all of the skills that we have been practicing to date including discipline tackling, getting the ball to rotate backwards on the kick, keeping our feet/getting up quickly and handballing to team mates in better position especially whilst being tackled. I was certainly proud of the way that we attacked the footy and on most occasions were first to the ball.

Tyson Durdin (Captain) and Riley Watkins (Vice Captain) led the way winning the toss. Tyson certainly played a captains game in what I thought was his best game for the year taking several big contested marks and large kicks that cleared the opposition hitting team mates on the chest. The first quarter was very competitive and produced two great moments with Luke Webb taking a great mark and kicking his first goal and Josh Richter marking and kicking 1 of his 2 goals getting his 50th goal for the Kookaburras.

The second quarter was a lot tougher with Broadview attacking hard. It was outstanding to see Jayden, Daniall and Alex take some good marks and were constantly at the ball. Brodie Leisavanieks was impressive in the last line of defence, the ball could not get past him and the delivery to the forward line showed great team work. Well done Brodie! Seth, Isaac and Riley all had special moments taking courage’s marks and delivering with handball to team mates in better position. All three players listened excellently holding their positions well.

The third quarter saw Talan, Jakson and Danyle Dobbie continuing to work hard constantly linking up handball and kicks which allowed us to get the ball into space and put scoring pressure on the scoreboard. Xander was moving well around the ground and it was particularly good to see him bring other team mates into the game when he hand-balled to Riley who was in a better position and moved the ball forward quickly. Wyatt again played a strong game and is regularly getting the ball, building his form from last week. Great work Wyatt. Daniel Hewitt and Tom were lively around the ground and when asked for a big lift in the last quarter really delivered.

Overall it was a great team effort against a strong opposition. Well done guys! I would like to thank all the parent helpers on the day, particularly Michael in the cold rain doing the goal umpire role.

Under 9 Blue A cold wet and windy day met all the brave Burra’s on the top oval Sunday morning, Mothers Day and all the Mums were treated with chocolates by the Captain’s Dad Ange Tarzia. Michael won the toss and decided to kick into a 6 goal breeze against a Hope Valley team that were down on numbers. Congratulations to all the Burra's who put their hands up to play for the opposing team.

It was a pretty even and low scoring first quarter, highlighted by some great defending by Luke, an early chase and holding the ball call really set the tone for the day. Hope Valley scored the first goal but some great work between Marin, Lachlan and Harrison saw the Burra's draw level. Caleb was doing some great work at ground level and Declan was proving a great rover, seeming to be everywhere. Noah and Devlin were playing well for Hope Valley, Callum and Nicolas all over the ground for the Burras.

The second quarter saw Harrison and Brayden setting the tone for the Burra's. Devlin was magnificent this quarter which was highlighted by great tackling and team work from our team, Sawyer digging in deep at ground level and having great second and third efforts. This quarter finished with a great team goal finished off by Owen who was proving to be the difference. Luke was starring in his defensive efforts, Nicolas and Caleb giving strong support.

The third quarter saw Hope Valley take control of the game, Sawyer and Kai were playing well for the opposition, and despite Michael's great efforts, Owen's great tackling and great work between Harrison and Marin Hope valley were getting in front. Lachlan looked like he was in trouble at 3/4 time but great work from the Team Doctor had him ready for the start of the fourth quarter.

At the team huddle between quarters Coach Dan Hussey gave what most present said was a Barassi like team talk, it certainly worked with the team playing out of their skins in the last quarter. The Golden Grove Goal Umpire may have had the rain at his back or he forgot his glasses but the boys played to the whistle and to their credit did not let anything get in their way. Kye was sensational in the last quarter, Devlin's tackling and Callum's ruck work were magnificent. Caleb and Sawyer chasing hard and setting examples to the team. Great interchange of passing be-tween Devlin, Luke, Kai & Marin saw Michael score a 30 metre goal. Great work from the team and a thoroughly deserved victory by the mighty Burra's.

Under 10 Blue

This week’s game led us to Eastern Park on a blustery winter’s day. The game started with the Blue Burra’s on the back foot straight away against a barrage of forward movement from a physical Eastern Park team. The boys did their best repelling constant attacks but suc-cumbed to repeat goals by the opposition in the first quarter . The second quarter saw the Blue Burra’s pick up the tempo of the game. Aaron picked up multiple touches in the back half and backed his pace and evasive skills to rebound the ball from our defence. Some strong tackling and pressure led by Jacob, Brandon and Callum saw the Burra’s starting to gain some ascendency in the mid-field. The team were challenged by the coaching group at half time to man up, apply pressure, tackle and bump and re-sponded well by holding Eastern Park goalless in the third quarter and clawing back the lead through a clever Bro-die goal on the run. A strong last quarter led by the two Jakes and goals from Sam and Jacob closed the margin. A very disciplined game from Max, Waylon and Koby in defence saw Eastern Park unable to score a goal after half time and the Blue Burra’s winning the second half by three goals. The Blue Burra’s, in one of the toughest most physical games in three years, should be very proud of themselves and how they represented Golden Grove Football Club in the high-est manner.

Under 11 Red Miserable conditions greeted the fans and parents but for the players, wet muddy conditions are perfect for a game of footy. Warm up proved a good opportunity to get used to the slippery conditions. Nick and Jordan attended the toss and we were kicking with the wind with a strong cross-breeze. First-quarter: good pressure early boxed Tea Tree Gully in their defensive 50. A holding the man free kick to Nick lead to a good lead and mark by Kayne who finished well for a goal. Nice team play between Riley and Kayne led to a mark and goal after the siren to Nathan. Quarter time: 2-5 to 0-0. Second-quarter: Corey defied the conditions and took a great overhead mark. Pressure was on the team early as we fought against the strong breeze scrapping and defending well. No score for either team. Half time: 2-5 to 0-0. Third-quarter: Great teamwork from Kayne found Harry in the clear just missing the set shot for a point. All players were combining well allowing the team to pump the ball forward again and again. Some great battling in the packs was a highlight during the quarter to contest and win the ball. However, we only had four points to show from the majority of the possession. Three quarter time: 2-9 to 0-0. Fourth-quarter: Kicking into a strong breeze, the boys were challenged to maintain the lead in the last quarter after being overrun last week. Winning possession from the contest led to a Brady point to start the scoring in the last. A deft tap by Riley fell nicely to Nick who finished truly from 25m out. Teamwork was coming to the four with good passing and hands leading to a nice Brady snap for a goal. Defensive efforts were much improved this week keep-ing the opposition scoreless. In the end a good win in tough conditions. The song was sung with gusto. Final score: 4-11 to 0-0. A final note of thanks to Matt, Mel, Stephen, Shane, Ian, Kym, Jo, Mackenzie and Katerina who helped in the can-teen and bar on Friday night. The next time we are rostered to volunteer we encourage those parents who couldn't help on this occasion, to put their hand up and get involved. This will help to share the load and ensure it's not the same people volunteering all the time. Without volunteers our club wouldn't be running.
