DESCRIPTION

This presentation looks into the growth of open access and how institutions can tangibly support authors and mandates. It focuses on how, by increasing open access output, an institution can raise the visibility and impact of research, ultimately increasing both the visibility and prestige of an institution.

What does “open access” to scientific research mean?

• Universally available online without any barriers to access

• Creative Commons– Licensed to allow redistribution and reuse (as long as

attribution is given)

• Permanently archived in multiple locations to ensure long term access – PubMed Central

Page 3: Gold open access – a successful model?, Stockholm University October 2011

Traditional Model?• Severe disadvantages of restrictive access

• Political Argument – pay taxes, have access

• Increasing cost of subscriptions

• Transfer of copyright

Routes towards open access• Gold OA

Publishing in an open access journal: – Fully OA journals

e.g. BioMed Central, Public Library of Science etc– Optional OA in traditional journals

(now offered by most major publishers)

• Green OA Depositing articles in an OA repository:Subject repositories– PubMed Central– UK PubMed Central– ArXiV

Page 6: Gold open access – a successful model?, Stockholm University October 2011

Open access flavors at Springer

Hybrid Open Access

• Open Access option in majority of Springer titles• Open Choice for

individual authors:Article fee € 2000/ USD $ 3000

Fully Open Access

Authors’ Rights

• Self-archiving of author’s accepted version• Deposit into

PubMed Central

Page 7: Gold open access – a successful model?, Stockholm University October 2011

Springer is a green publisher

Page 8: Gold open access – a successful model?, Stockholm University October 2011

Springer pioneered the hybrid journal;

•Open access journals covering all disciplines•Creative Commons•53 journals already, 11 already have impact

factors•Administered by BioMed Central•No subscriptions, article processing fees

instead (800 – 1,250 EUR)– Paid by the author (via research grant, library, institutional OA

fund, …)– Paid by a member institution– Waivers (economic hardship)

BioMed Central• Pioneered open access publishing model

• Launched first open access journal in 2000

• Now publishes >200 OA titles

• Creative Commons license

• Costs covered by 'article processing charge' (APC)
