LETTER OF THE MONTH

I want to pass on my compliments to Gold Coast Magazine. I have a subscription and when I go to my letterbox and find my new mag I can’t wait to open it and start reading immediately. Congratulations on the topics covered and how much is Gold Coast specific. I leave my GCMs on our coffee table in the lounge room and all our visitors pick them up and have a read. I also took my last magazine to the hairdressers because I find this is where I can really enjoy relaxing, and reading about the wonderful place where we live.

Keep up the good work and I will continue to spread the word about GCM. Now that the warmer weather is upon us I am sure the next mag will have some exciting features. Liesl Roughead, Merrimac.

Some serious pampering is in the order for our Letter of the Month with summer survival treats from MOR! including Sugar Crystal Body Scrub, Marshmallow Body Oil, Classic Collection Cassis Noir Hand & Body Wash and Hand & Body Lotion, Cassis Noir Lip Delight, plus Emporium White Hydrangea and Snow Garden soaps, all valued at over $200.

i remember the day my best friend acquired her first pair of Christian Louboutins. Her father had just returned from one of his many business trips to London and as a gift for his beloved eldest daughter, returned bestowed with Louboutins in

tow. Even back then they were considered the holy grail of heels, with their immaculate craftsmanship and shiny red sole. They were just divine and I loved them. My best friend was of course head over heels in love with her new acquisitions and her father earnt enough brownie points with his purchase to warrant going overseas never to return. My best friend somehow seemed complete now Louboutins reigned in her shoe cupboard. She was happier, chirpy and had an undeniable spring in her step, even when she wasn’t wearing her Louboutins, which was very rare I might add. Her gorgeous Louboutins, the highly coveted classic nude pump, conveniently went perfectly with every single outfit she wore, and I swear her legs looked longer, leaner and sexier when she wore them.

I, on the other hand, was green with envy, in a way only a best friend can conceal. I loved those shoes like a mother loves her firstborn and at the time I would have quite happily given mine up if an opportunity for a transaction became available. I often found myself staring at them wistfully, patiently dreaming that one day I could possess something of such profound beauty. I often wondered if she would lend them to me, we did have exactly the same shoe size, or even leave them to me in her will if something terrible was ever to become of her. But nothing ever surfaced. There was a glimmer of hope, however, when my friend announced she was moving to London as her father had decided to live there permanently with the rest of her family. She stated as it was so horribly cold in London, she would have no need for her collection of divine designer pumps and I was to ‘mind’ them in her absence. When the delivery of shoes arrived there were boxes of stunning Dior booties, gorgeous Mimco buckled pumps and limited edition Chanel kitten heels but much to my despair no Louboutins. Yes, I was terribly disappointed, but who was I kidding, if I owned those shoes they would be a permanent fixture to the soles of my feet. I would take them with me everywhere, wrap them in cotton wool each night and have them visit my cobbler for a leather treatment and resoling once a month.

I find myself dreaming of beautiful, pretty things at this exciting time of year and wistfully planning my year ahead. I hope you are too. Enjoy!

Lovers of vintage elegance and fierce feminine curves rejoice, Alannah Hill

has released her Spring/Summer 2010 collection and it is as sweet as pie.

Shot surrounding the crystal pools of our very own Palazzo Versace, Alannah Hill’s Spring Summer 2010 collection campaign is a celebration of the romantic silhouettes our mothers sported in the 1950s and ‘60s. Married with delightful gelato hues and soft watercolour floral prints, the collection adeptly named A Summer Seduction, is a celebration of everything you love about womanhood. Stripes and floral prints, lace, bows, beading and bold embellishment feature throughout the collection, adding an undeniable air of elegance.

Once you have spied the collection you will want the entirety in your wardrobe pronto. There is an outfit for every invitation, especially the pretty silk frocks, peplums dresses and skirts, beautiful blazers and soft cashmere cardigans, which just scream ‘take me out for an afternoon of frivolity’. Alannah’s signature looks rear their pretty head too including the likes of the strapless structured dress and the oversized flower accessory, which completes every outfit with style and grace.

The lovely Alannah was on set to style the entire shoot, adding her ladylike touches to each and every shot. Take a leaf out of Alannah’s book this party season and top off your ultra-feminine look with lashes of red tips and lips to add instant glam and intrigue. gcm

GRINDERMAN: GRINDERMAN 2

What began as a bit of experimental relief for Nick Cave and his band of Bad Seeds has flourished into a beautifully unhinged revelation that sees a return to the notorious Birthday Party growl. Still semi-improvised and lasciviously comical, Grinderman 2 is an evolution from its former. Referencing Miles Davis with a seedy blues running deep beneath, this record oozes a thundering malevolence. Dark tales that spin serpent wranglers, bat-faced girls and ‘Marilyn Monroe’s negligee’ somehow conjure themselves into Grinderman’s frantic brilliance. After 30 years in the industry Cave’s poetic gurgle still seduces the masses, and despite only just taking up the guitar, his hand ravages the strings like a pro. Maybe they might be 50-something but these long-haired rockers and moustache bearers prove there is more to a mid-life crisis than just a Ferrari.

gcm MY STORY

KATRINA ELLIS, NATUROPATH, HERBALIST, IRIDOLOGIST

As told to Aimee Ley

I studied on the Gold Coast and the day after I finished I flew to Thailand to work for the ex-Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand in his prestigious health resort Chiva-Som. I was just 23 years old and was offered the position of head naturopath and nutritionist. Here I performed consultations with famous actors, musicians, royalty, artists, models and television personalities from all over the world. The variety of nationalities and ages was enormous and I used every natural therapy necessary to assess and treat their various health conditions. I gave numerous lectures, wrote articles for magazines on health and cancer prevention and even hosted my own natural health television program. I also designed an organics food line and co-wrote the best-selling book, The Art of Healthy Living and Eating with Chiva-Som. After many years of working in this blissful paradise my life was about to change forever. Due to a number of factors, including exposure to a toxic agent, my stomach began to protrude. I sought answers from top specialists around the world and was misdiagnosed many times. Eventually one doctor hinted at the possibility that I may have cancer. However, he considered this extremely unlikely. In only a few months the tumor had grown to the size of a 10 month-old baby. On removal it was discovered that I had a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer that had unfortunately spread throughout my body.My prognosis was poor and the treatment was aggressive. At 28 years of age I embarked on a campaign to save myself. I chose to undertake orthodox treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, together with natural methods of practitioner range nutritional supplements, a wholefoods diet, yoga, meditation, positive affirmations, herbs and other forms of natural healing. Then against all advice, I stopped the aggressive chemotherapy as I knew it was doing me more

harm than good. I used my knowledge of natural medicine to try to save myself and only a few months later I was cancer free. The doctors told me that I would be a lucky girl if I lived past the year. That was 11 years ago. The doctors also told me that it would be a miracle if I had children, but I ignored this advice too and I now have a beautiful boy and girl. These real-life experiences allowed me to write the 2003 best seller, Shattering the Cancer Myth, a book that has touched lives all over the world. I believe the only people who truly understand cancer and the feelings and emotions experienced are cancer patients themselves. This story signifies a journey of the soul through heartbreak and excitement, sadness and courage, disappointment and hope. I wrote this book to help other people like myself, around the world, of all ages who face this confusing and mysterious disease. In today’s modern world, very little practical or useful information is available to cancer sufferers and their loved ones. Knowledge of a disease such as cancer creates power and self-empowerment makes us feel more confident in our ability to overcome this condition. I have continued to work as a naturopath helping others find their ultimate health potential. After a culmination of another seven year’s experience I have written Shattering the Cancer Myth– second edition, which is due for release before the end of the year. I have also written a fantastic wholefoods recipe book, which is to be released in the new year.I consult from my clinic the Katrina Ellis Natural Health Centre. Here, we use advanced testing devices to identify the cause of a health problem. We then incorporate the best natural therapies to encourage wellness at a cellular level. I refer between a team of elite medical and natural health professionals to provide a balanced approach to healing. I continue to provide regular seminars and lectures for the public, colleges and societies and travel overseas to work with my wonderful clientele. I am passionate about helping people and my books are designed to give inspiration and hope to others.gcM

gcm my career

NADER PEZESHKZAD, OWNER OF GEMVIEW

As told to Aimee Ley

I was always a very diligent student. I received my Master’s Degree in Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and started work as a research assistant at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Canada. I was part of a select design team that developed a new turbine blade designed especially to increase the efficiency of the aircraft. At this stage I thought my career path had been chosen but I could have never guessed what lay ahead of me in the future.

It was 1985 and I was holidaying in Brazil. I met a new group of friends and they happened to own an emerald mine. I knew nothing about mining, but I decided to visit the mine only to return with my very own rough emerald. I took the emerald back to Canada with me and as a very novice gemstone merchant I was surprised at the acceptance these precious gems received and the good profit returns.

After this first experience as a gemstone merchant I decided to quit my career and become a full-time buyer and seller of emeralds from Brazil. It didn’t take me long to work out I could make more profit in one month selling gemstones that I could in a whole year working as an engineer. The mine in Brazil where I source my emeralds is in a little village called Santa Terezinha de Goiás. Here the miners go about 100 metres down a well while a pump is constantly pumping out water so the miners can explore the well. When they return, they bring with them wheelbarrows full of clay-looking matter. Contained within the clay may be stones worth up to $150,000,US, however there is also the potential of finding nothing at all. This is the risk of buying the natural product.

Once I have the rough emeralds I take the stones to Goiânia or Teófilo Otoni in Minas Grais, Brazil. It is like being in the middle of a jungle, a world apart from the Gold Coast. Big, beautiful trees

reach over the top of the square creating a sort of natural canopy. Many varieties of birds and other indigenous animals inhabit the area. People here are very kind and genuine. Days seem as though they pass by in a flash because it is so far out from civilisation. Everyone in the area is so friendly that they all know each other by nicknames. My nickname is Nada, meaning ‘nothing’ as they could not pronounce my name. When my little brother joined me to work, his nickname became Nadinho (little nothing), and my older brother became Nadao (big nothing). Being in such a naturally beautiful place like Teófilo Otoni is like a complete holiday while making profit on the side. I love the food, which is so exotic and wonderful, plus the friendships I have here are very heart warming. Sometimes I almost don’t want to come home.

My career has taken me all over the world in the search for gemstones. I buy tanzanite from Arusha in Tanzania and rough diamonds in Antwerp, Belgium. My success as a trader means I now have a shop on Grice Avenue at Paradise Point where customers can see the treasures of my travels. It is a very beautiful jewellery shop with an amazing collection of elegant pieces ready to be purchased and loose gemstones, cut and ready to be set in their own bespoke ways. I really enjoy the design process and how we can create individual pieces you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Clients can come into the shop and create their own jewellery fantasies together with one of our incredibly talented and experienced designers.

The transition to jewellery design came naturally to me. I have a gemstone cutting machine that allows me to cut stones from rough and the CAD allows us to design a high calibre of jewellery that is impossible to be made by hand. It is completely symmetrical and can be scaled with a click of a button. In the future I believe we will be able to design a piece of jewellery digitally one day and receive the final piece within a week. gcm

LifeKhrishna Orloff is striking her best model pose on a bright-green verdant embankment at the opulent Jade apartments. We are smack-bang in the middle of Surfers, but the serenity of the exclusive gated building provides a secret escape from the bustling metropolis. The crash and boom of messy afternoon waves is all we can hear as they belt the sand some 20 metres away over the escarpment. Khrishna's tiny hand branches over her bronzed forehead as to shade her face as she vivaciously struts her hip in the opposing direction. It’s getting late in the afternoon and the crisp westerly sea breeze is making itself known. It carelessly picks up Khrishna’s spray-laden locks and whips them uncontrollably away off their perfectly placed position before playfully fluttering her designer kaftan around her Versace-clad feet. Khrishna doesn’t move a muscle; she keeps her eye on the prize as the wind has its way.

Although not known first and foremost as the model type, local business woman and single mum Khrishna Orloff needs no introduction to the lens and lights. Actually she’s

an old hand at the prettying up, pouting and poses. Khrishna was just 14 years old when she kicked off an eventful modelling career under the watchful eye of high-profile local agent Pam Tamblyn. It was back in the days when Pam operated out of Palm Beach and the insightful scout spotted the petite brunette on a Gold Coast beach. “I was asked to enter a swimsuit competition,” starts Khrishna as she slips into a divine, brilliant red Carla Zampatti gown between wardrobe changes. “I ended up winning the competition,” she laughs. “I couldn’t believe it at the time because I was such a skinny little thing.”

Small in stature with a petite frame, today Khrishna’s slim body is ever so toned and ballerina-lean. One can only imagine how tiny she must have been at such a young age, but her minute appearance didn’t stop the young model as she held her own against girls almost double her size. “I worked almost constantly on the Gold Coast, which is so uncommon these days,” she reminisces. “I was really well paid and I loved the industry. I had no aspiration to be a model before I was scouted, I was such a twiggy. It was quite surreal because I got used for a lot of body work and I would look at my body and think wow, there really is no body!” she exclaims, referring to her tiny frame. “I was like olive oil!”

As the hair and beauty team buzz around Khrishna, touching up her powder and reapplying her lipstick, she continues recounting her years behind the camera. “Modelling took me to a lot of places and I was very fortunate to work in both Sydney and Melbourne. I did Lou Design swimwear catalogues along with other catalogues and magazines. I was also an in-house model, which was fun because I got to see the new season swimsuits before they came out.”

But her work wasn’t limited to behind the camera. Like other girls involved in the modelling scene, Khrishna entered competitions on the nightclub circuit. Miss Nightclub Australia was just one of the awards she took out, a prestigious trophy at the time which, also meant she worked with Pepsi Cola.

Khrishna moved to Sydney to further her modelling career, but away from her familiar seaside town she saw firsthand just how different life can be. “I had gone from being a well-paid model to starting again and not knowing anyone,” she explains. “Sydney was such an exciting place, but so different to the Gold Coast. Quite scary but intriguing. It was a huge wake-up that life was so different on the Coast.

“While in between jobs I looked for something part-time to get me by. My mother was a nail technician and I swore I would never in my wildest dreams get into the industry, but sure enough I did,” she laughs. “I was living in Cronulla so I got a job in a salon nearby, but it wasn’t long before if I had taken over front of shop with my nail bar. Once the Cronulla salon was established I decided to move to Bondi where I started another salon in Bondi Central. The shop was huge with an apartment upstairs. The salon was really decked out with hair, beauty and nails.”

With two pumping nail salons and a stack of staff to manage, Khrishna quickly learnt the ropes of the small-business world. Her eyes light up as she speaks animatedly about her business venture. “I think I fluked it,” she admits. “I had never done it before. Paying huge rents and managing staff, but with so much pressure beneath me I had to do it and it was good. I learnt how to do hair and the whole beauty side and I also lived above the shop. It was sensational, bigger than I could ever explain it to be.”

Whether by luck or natural ability Khrishna went on to successfully open yet another nail bar in Cronulla while working in all three salons and juggling trips overseas. Six years passed by

along with a marriage, followed by a divorce, before Khrishna decided a sea change was in order so she packed up her life and headed to the Gold Coast. After another four-year stint with a salon in Surfers Paradise, Khrishna found she was burnt out so the nail bar went on the market. “I get burnt out because I work in the salons and I am talking to clients all day. You say you are going to only work five-hour days, but it never happens and you see the money coming through and you don’t want to turn clients away. It was hard because every salon I started had to be bigger and better than the last one. After I sold the nail bar I thought I could just live a happy life on the Gold Coast, but I got bored with it.”

True to her entrepreneurial tendencies, Khrishna started yet another business venture in Surfers Paradise, Underworld, a lingerie store on the Surfers strip. “I had never been in retail before, but I thought ‘how hard can it be’? It was unreal, but as much money as I made, I lost. I sold the store and once again found myself with nothing to do. I seriously had to get a career going on. I was in debt and needed to make the money back so I returned to nails.”

The next set-up is where Khrishna has established herself today, in the Lido Arcade in Surfers Paradise, along with her recent Bundall store. She is now known the Coast over for the salons that carry her name. “We are cheap and we are good and we have atmosphere,” explains Khrishna. “I try to keep my prices that little bit cheaper because for people on a normal wage, by the time they have paid their rent or their mortgage and their food and put the kids through school there is not much left over. I want to make it so every woman can afford to have her nails done, except me,” she smiles, showing off her natural nails. “Look no nails,” she laughs. “Everyone else has beautiful nails except me, just like the plumbers pipes, that is me to a T.”

As a measure of quality control Khrishna recently opened her latest venture, a training academy at Bundall where young nail technicians can learn the ropes of the industry before starting their careers in one of Khrishna’s salons. “It allows me to open more salons,” she starts. “We are looking at expanding again very soon so hopefully there will be Khrishnas splattered everywhere.”

A wistful look comes over Khrishna’s face as she speaks of her dreams for her budding nail empire. “I would love to have franchises, possibly in Dubai. I would also like to be a brand name with nail polishes, lip glosses–something that every girl would have in her handbag. Now that I am not working in the salons so much I am trying to take a bit of a step back. I have so many girls that I don’t need to be hand and file. But then again, I have clients who have been coming to see me for 12 years and they won’t see anyone else. That’s my problem,” she laughs.

Just as we are about to get ready for the final shot of the day, Khrishna’s 15-year-old daughter, Shoshuna arrives on set to see her mum. With her long dark hair and angelic features, it’s not hard to see where the Year 10 St Hilda’s student gets her looks from. “She is my number one,” says Khrishna affectionately as she hugs her daughter. “My salons come number two. This is life, this is how you bring up your kids and this is how you make a living.”

So how did she get by as a single mother? “You just have to,” explains Khrishna. “That is the bottom line. I came from a really great life and I want to give that to my daughter. If I have to work hard then she understands.”

When the world gets too much for Khrishna she jet sets to either Bali or Thailand to ground herself. Being surrounded by pure beauty and the simple things in life allows her to put life in perspective and also enjoy valuable time with her young daughter. “We go to Bali almost every school holidays,” says Khrishna excitedly. “It is great to get away from it all. If you can’t find me, I'm in Bali.” gcm

The festive season tends to blur into a series of events, the racing carnival, family gatherings and celebratory dinners, which are loads of fun, but also exhaustive for your wardrobe. Unless you are one of the lucky few with a dedicated room to accommodate for an extensive wardrobe and collection of accessories, chances are you will be stuck with nothing to wear to at least one important event this season. Stress no more because ingenious Australian online boutique ‘Can I Borrow That?’ is here to rescue you from your wardrobe dilemmas. Think of ‘Can I Borrow That?’ as your extended wardrobe, online and always available. Here you can flick through pages of designer dresses from the likes of Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Just Cavalli and Alexander McQueen and borrow them for a mere fraction of their retail price. There is also a divine range of handbags, fascinators and jewellery at your disposal. You can even reserve a specific item for a date in your schedule, or if its last minute, overnight delivery is available Monday to Friday nationwide. Once your seven-day borrow time is up all you have to do is return the item, ‘Can I Borrow That’ not only take care of the postage for you, but the dry cleaning too!

LOVING... THE WEDGESo it took us a while to warm to the wedge, but these gorgeous Tony Bianco kid suede wedges did the trick. The perfect accompaniment for the summer party dress, the wedge reduces risk of dreaded ‘stiletto heel stuck through timber decking’ at your next outdoor do. It is also a lot harder to roll your ankle or trip up stairs while strapped in a wedge, so we think they are winners all round!

CAN I BORROW THAT?

TREND: TIE DYEYes, the flower child trend is back on the runways and making its way into the chain stores and eventually your wardrobe this season. Don’t worry, tie dye doesn’t have to be dowdy, it’s about art and individuality. Designers such as Gail Elliott’s Little Joe, Kookai (pictured) and Calvin Klein are embracing the trend and so should you. We recommend incorporating it ever so easily into your wardrobe with a patterned dress like this one from Kookai.

Who’s that girl? It’s local talent Hannah Saul. We love them local and so does a bevy of Australian designers, including Kookai, who included Hannah in their lineup at the Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival recently.

Surrounded by divine silver designs at Silvershop, store manager Belinda Lee and her assistant Shari Bridges are in a jewellery heaven. “Every member of our staff has a self-confessed

obsession with jewellery,” admits Belinda. “Silver jewellery in particular. We all have our own unique style, but the common theme is a love for silver jewellery.”

Once you visit either the Robina Town Centre or Marina Mirage stores, it’s not hard to see why the staff at Silvershop are practically dripping in divine silver jewellery. Each of the stores is filled with elegant glass cabinets displaying the most beautiful collections of contemporary and classic silver designs from all over the world, and the temptation is clearly just too overwhelming to resist.

“Our customers always comment on how lucky we are to work in such a beautiful store filled with such gorgeous jewellery and I have to agree, especially when new collections arrive in store, we just can’t help ourselves,” exclaims Belinda.

One of the first things you notice about Silvershop, except for the exceptional range of celestial designs on show, is the staff’s passion shown for not only for jewellery but for customer service. Each staff member is trained professionally in all aspects of customer service and they see their position as more of a lifestyle than just a position.

“Shopping at Silvershop is not just about buying jewellery,” explains Belinda. “It is an experience and we want every customer to get that special Silvershop treatment. We love building relationships with our clients and helping them select that perfect item or collection of pieces. It’s a really enjoyable part of our job plus the customer knows they are always going to get great service here.”

When it comes to selection, the customer really is spoilt for choice at Silvershop. There are a bevy of brands in store, and the list of designers is constantly expanding as the team unearths stunning collections from around the globe. The most popular brand is Najo, a brand that includes both contemporary and classic silver pieces in their collections. “Najo has two releases each year and the second collection has just hit the shelves,” explains Belinda. “The range is really so popular, I think because there is so much variety. It also has a great mix of contemporary pieces mixed with the classics.” Shari is also a huge fan of the Najo brand. “It’s so contemporary and the pieces are so unique – more for the one-off type of girl who doesn’t want to see her jewellery worn by another person. I have plenty of Najo pieces in my personal collection and I am yet to see another person wearing the same piece. I also like to mix the traditional Najo pieces with the more contemporary styles to get a really individual look.”

Also stocked in store is the ever-popular Pandora collection, which continues to be a big hit with women of all ages. “We have also just received the Pandora breast-cancer double leather bracelet,” says Belinda. “It’s a stunning design and best of all,15 per cent of the sale price goes to breast cancer research.”

The Von Treskow and slightly edgier Von T ranges are also extremely popular, especially the ball bracelets, which are certainly on trend at the moment. Von Treskow is a handmade collection featuring sterling silver designs set with natural and semi-precious gemstones. The most popular elements of the designs include the primitive coins, religious trinkets and Elizabethan tassels, which inspire the classical, yet long lost treasure creations of this spirited designer. Von T on the

other hand is daringly casual. Tough chic meets gothic romance in this classic yet raw jewellery range. Tough skulls mix with precious stones of onyx and pearls for instant rock-star appeal.

“Our customers are so varied because each of the different ranges we stock appeals to a different age group,” says Belinda. “For this reason we are always very popular for gifts for mothers, sisters, best friends and partners, because we really do have something extra special for everyone.

“Silvershop is also like a fashion store to accessorise an outfit you are putting together for a special occasion. We have bridesmaids, girls coming in for school formals and even the racing season to find that stunning statement piece of jewellery to complete an outfit,” explains Belinda. “Pearls and diamantes are popular for special occasion jewels.”

“Summer is going to be all about colour,” predicts Shari. “Our Biba range embraces beautiful coloured stones that are just perfect for Summer. They also mix in well with your silver too.”

With two stores on the Gold Coast there has never been a better time to visit Silvershop especially with Christmas rapidly approaching. “Silvershop is ideal for picking up Christmas gifts you know are going to be treasured,” says Belinda. “We also have something for everyone’s budget and we help our customers find exactly what they need while keeping within their price range. We take a lot of pride in putting together something really special for our customers.”

Visit the team at Marina Mirage, Shop 7, Seaworld Drive Main Beach, phone 07 5531 0411, or Robina Town Centre, Shop 4024 Robina Town Centre Drive, Robina, phone 07 5580 8122, alternately visit silvershop.com.au gcm

Crowninggcm PROMOTION

Jenny Corbett talks to GCM about the inspiration behind Pure Colour Lounge, located at pristine Paradise Point.

THE CONCEPT Designed with purity in mind, Pure Colour Lounge is a place you can be directed along your own personal transformation with the help of a team of professionals. The salon’s concept is crisp white, which reflects the moral foundation owner Jenny Corbett follows to run her business. From the staff and clients to the non-toxic hair products, pure is the theme at Pure Colour Lounge.

The staff at Pure Colour Lounge take great pride in the relationships they form with their loyal clientele. Every six months the salon invites clients to a free education workshop, and each week 10 clients are invited to the salon for a personal training session in everyday hair care. Here clients can learn everything from blow-drying and brushing to the art of volume control. In addition, each new client gets a pamper bag to take home, especially selected by their hairdresser and they also receive promotions throughout the year.

THE LADY BEHIND THE SALON For Pure Colour Lounge owner Jenny Corbett, the process of continuously learning in an ever-growing industry is a full-time job. She regularly attends seminars to keep updated on new trends and the latest colour, and even goes overseas to bring back the latest products and techniques.

“I was invited to attend the prestigious Vidal Sassoon workshop recently in London. It was such as fantastic experience, which I feel has enriched my knowledge of the industry to a whole new level. I also used my time in London to bring fresh ideas and colour that other salons would not be aware of yet. So it gives us that leading edge.”

Jenny says it was her father, a well-known oil painter in Korea and America, who encouraged her to be a hairdresser. “When I was a teenager I wanted to be a musical actress. So many nights my dad would talk about the ‘power of art’ and ‘given talent’. I couldn’t understand why he talked to me about it over and over again. He must have seen my talent since I was a little girl.”

WHAT YOU WILL LOVE The first thing you notice when you arrive at Pure Colour Lounge, except for the crisp white fitout, is the strange-looking machine. Jenny explains the machine is the electronic shampoo bed, a beauty salon bed with an ingenious basin built into it.

“This is my favourite,” says Jenny excitedly. “I have an injured neck and lower back from an accident and for me to use a classic basin, even for five minutes, was a nightmare. So I found the most comfortable Japanese basin in the world to have in my salon. Our clients love coming to the salon for their shampoo experience. I love to see clients happy and having that special time to enjoy the salon that I’ve made so unique.”

The chairs are fully automated, reclining completely parallel to the floor so all the client has to do is lay down, close their eyes and enjoy a relaxing scalp massage. The privacy screens automatically come down while you enjoy your hair experience, creating a private cocoon of pure bliss.

When visiting Pure Colour Lounge you can expect only the best products to be used on your hair. A one-on-one consultation is given to each client upon arrival where the hair and scalp condition is assessed. The team at Pure are always focused on their client’s health, wellbeing and hygiene and even use single-use disposable towels. In addition, Jenny and her team rigorously test each product before it is used in the salon to ensure they are of the upmost quality.

“Chemical composition, pH level and risks to the clients are of paramount importance to us,” explains Jenny. “Our preferred products have a natural organic base and are sulphate and ammonia-free, giving the client an irritation-free experience.”

For Jenny, her tireless work at Pure Colour Lounge is never done. In order to keep the salon ahead of the game, Jenny will further develop her skills so she can offer her clients cutting edge technology in hair and scalp analysis to achieve better colour outcomes both visually and physically. GCM

VersaceboundWhen it comes to hair and eye styling, legendary Oscar

Palazzo Versace, Australia’s only fashion hotel, is proud to now house two of the Gold Coast’s favourite beauty gurus. Celebrity hairdresser Oscar Cullinan, owner and director of Oscar Oscar Salons and A-list brow stylist Amy-Jean Linnehan of Amy-

Jean Eye Couture have united to share an opulent salon space within the confines of Palazzo Versace. Due to open mid-November, the salon is set to be luxurious and opulent to reflect the divine surrounds of the esteemed hotel.

For Oscar, the salon will mark the opening of his 10th salon and he couldn’t be happier with the superb location. “When I was asked if we would like to open an Oscar Oscar Salon at the Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast I just knew it would be a perfect fit for us. The fact that we were asked to open in one of the world’s leading fashion hotels just reinforces that Oscar Oscar Salons are now synonymous with high fashion and have become one of Australia’s most recognisable and desired hairdressing salons.”

Oscar Oscar Salons have celebrated over 21 years of creating glamorous hair in Australia with salons in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Oscar and his team are responsible for over 60,000 hair appointments in the past 12 months, working to create fashionable and beautiful hairstyles for over a thousand clients every week.

“The Versace salon will be a more intimate, boutique salon and the design will reflect the opulence of the Versace hotel. We are using a lot of mirrors and dark finishes to create a really sexy salon space, and the overall feel will blend in with the design of the Palazzo Versace,” says Oscar.

Although surrounded by the classy new-look salon, clients to the new Oscar Oscar Salon at Palazzo Versace can expect all the services Oscar Oscar Salons are renowned for, including balayage, micro-foiling, keratin-taming treatments and of course, the award-winning Oscar Oscar cutting and colouring experience. Oscar himself will be available by appointment at the new salon for his celebrity style cutting services.

Amy-Jean Linnehan is also thrilled to be opening up shop at Palazzo Versace. “It’s so exciting to see it finally come to fruition as I’ve been teasing my clients with details over the past 12 months,” she laughs. “The decadence and opulence of the hotel will be mirrored in the interior design with a modern twist. I’m rapt that Oscar and myself are making a promise to offer the highest standard of service available on the Gold Coast in luxurious surroundings.”

Amy-Jean is renowned for her expertise in all eye-enhancement services. From brow sculpting and colour adjustment to lash extensions, eye make up styling and feather brow tattooing, Amy-Jean is a perfectionist with years of experience at her craft. To complement her services Amy-Jean also has an eye-styling make up range called Amy-Jean Eye Couture, which consists of specially developed products for the eyes only.

“It’s a range I have been developing for four years now and I have been holding off with the release to coincide with the launch at Versace,” she says. “It’s very specific to the services my team offer in-house. For example I have developed a mascara with a unique wand and a lash shampoo that is compatible for all individual eyelash extensions.”

With such a specialised service Amy-Jean is in high demand, spending five days a week servicing her Gold Coast clients and two days in Sydney where she has a loyal bunch of clientele. Now with the Versace salon, Amy-Jean is looking forward to pampering her clients in true VIP style.

“From refreshments served in Versace glassware to complimentary eye make up application for all customers, the Versace salon is going to provide the complete experience,” explains Amy-Jean. “I am employing more staff front of house as well as my creative team together with Oscar’s professional staff, to make every aspect of the service a memorable experience.”

The new salon is located near the Versace Boutique on the ground floor in a room previously known as the Marco Polo room. You can access the salon via Marina Mirage where plenty of undercover parking is available, then simply walk over the ramp that connects the Mirage to Versace. For more information or to book an appointment in the new salon phone Oscar Oscar Salon on 07 5591 8976 or Amy-Jean Eye Couture on 07 5591 8970. gcm

“The Versace salon will be a more intimate, boutique salon and the design will reflect the opulence of the Versace hotel. We are using a lot of mirrors and dark finishes to create a really sexy salon space, and the overall feel will blend in with the design of the Palazzo Versace,” says Oscar.

gcm PLASTIC SURGERY with Dr Terrence Scamp

www.goldcoastmagazine.com.au 83

The silly social season is coming up and you want to put on your best face, but the mirror doesn’t lie. You’re too young for a face lift or you just don’t want an operation at this stage, but you know you can do with a little “freshen-up”. So what are your options?

The face lift is designed to return the sagging jowls and neck tissues to their original position. It is the definitive solution to these problems despite advances in non-surgical options. The results from injectables and light sources to the jowls and neck just don’t

compete with the results seen after a face lift. However, your face ages in more ways than just by sagging. In this part of the world the most

striking example is photo-ageing – the ageing effect that the sun has on your skin. Sure, it’s most prevalent in the fair-skinned majority of us, all wearing skins that evolved in the cold northern European weather and taking it out unprotected into our sub-tropical sun. However, even darker skin types show the effects of sun exposure, not so much by the red blotches, rough spots and wrinkles that arise in the fairer skins, but by brown discolourations and uneven pigmentation that can spoil a previously flawless olive skin.

For your skin, it’s what you do each day that counts the most. Fair skins need constant protection from our harsh sunlight and even darker skins look better with UV protection as it maintains their perfect even tone. Using a colour-matched mineral make up with sun filter capacity is an easy way to give your skin daily protection without departure from your usual routine.

A sun filter is a good start, but generally speaking it doesn’t provide adequate protection. Topical anti-oxidants in effective preparations such as the SkinCeuticals range saturate your skin with protection from free radical damage from sunlight, smoking and other toxins. Plus there are specific plant-based preparations to help fade down those brown discolourations that can occur in all skin types.

Microdermabrasion is a simple, comfortable, no-downtime procedure can freshen up the top layer of the skin but also enhance the absorption of a good skincare program. If the damage is done and the red and brown discolourations are getting harder to hide with make up then treatment with an intense pulsed light can help to fade these away in a series of no-downtime procedures.

If your skin has really had too much of the good life and it shows, laser resurfacing may be considered. This acts in two ways. First it removes a lot of the sun damage that lives in the more superficial part of the skin, but also it stimulates the deeper portions of the skin to lay down new collagen and improve the elastic network and fade those fine lines away. Laser resurfacing is much more precise than it was 15 years ago and can be fine-tuned from anything from a deep procedure, designed to fight acne scarring or deep lines, right down to a laser micropeel with minimal downtime, simply designed to freshen up the skin and return its youthful glow.

The other two ways we age is by our expression lines becoming not a fleeting visitor matching our momentary mood, but a permanent resident refusing to be budged. Most commonly these are the frown lines, crow’s feet and the horizontal lines across the forehead. However, if you are expressive you may also accumulate lines near the corners of your mouth and around the lips.

Injections to relax those overactive muscles are very effective and there is no doubt that Botox has taken the world by storm. It is the most popular cosmetic treatment on the planet, due to its minimal discomfort and no downtime and proven effective results. However, if those lines, have been there a long time and are extra deep they may need more than a gentle relaxation to encourage them to depart. Safe, effective dermal fillers are available to not only soften such lines but also to help return the youthful proportions of the face. Because that’s the other way we age: by shrinking.

The grape becomes the sultana. The full-blown cheek of youth turns into a hollow crease and those rosy lips become a thin red line. Scientific developments in dermal fillers have provided us with a menu of preparations to be matched to the problem at hand, be it a wrinkle, a sunken cheek or a disappearing pout. The long-lasting results from these safe and effective products can help return the youthful proportions of the face and this can be achieved with almost no downtime and minimal discomfort.

Esteem Day Spa is about matching all the tools that science brings to us with the individual’s needs and desires and tailoring a treatment program to suit their preferences and their lifestyle. Our aim is to help you put on your best face for the festive times ahead. So turn the other cheek. A younger, natural, smoother cheek, and face forward for the days to come. GCm

Creating a state-of-the art medispa requires the right information, the right equipment, the right people and the right training. While we live in a wonderful part of

the world, we are a long way from major research centres in Europe and the USA. To stay in touch with the latest developments in cosmetic surgery and non-surgical rejuvenation requires frequent attendance at international meetings where the best speakers discuss the latest developments. At a recent meeting in California the room was filled with almost every world authority on lasers. The carefully structured program and the adequate discussion time combined with further informal discussions combined to impart a sense of where we are with laser and what the near future is likely to bring. All the noted manufacturers were on hand to display their latest and greatest wares.

But getting the right laser is only one step in the right direction. Importantly you need the right people and the right training. Mary- Ellen Beattie is a registered nurse with five years' experience in the use of laser and light-based devices. The combination of experience, up-to-the minute training and the best equipment enables her to provide her clientele at Esteem Day Spa with a standard of treatment unsurpassed anywhere in the world.

To maintain and enhance the improvement gained from the Esteem Day Spa lasers and light-based devices, one needs good skincare. Kerry-Ann Sirovs uses the Beau Visage device (a special camera that shows the skin’s health and sun damage in a way not apparent to the naked eye) to track the progress of clients on their individually tailored skincare program. Different skin types age in different ways and the emphasis on correcting the ageing progress and achieving optimal skin condition requires an individually balanced program of UV filters, anti-oxidant preparations, pigment faders, moisturisers and cleansers. Kerry-Ann can take this improvement further by use of our Limelight, or intense pulsed light devices, but a sound, scientifically based skincare program forms the foundation of a program to protect, repair and enhance your skin.

In the '70s collagen injections were developed by processing and purifying cowhide to treat lines on the face. However, their problems were linked to allergic reactions and the duration of the product, which was rarely more than several months. Modern injectables are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in the body. Synthetic copies of this product are purified and stabilised to enhance their longevity. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and these versatile products can provide correction of facial lines or enhancement of lips, cheeks and jawlines for durations of one to two years. The product is formulated in different ways so that in its deepest forms it can mimic the shape of a full young cheek, while in its finest form it can restore the healthy plumpness of young skin, be it on the face, hands or décolletage.

Injections of Botulinum Toxin have been around since the '70s but were only applied for cosmetic use 20 years later. These safe and speedy injections can soften strong frown lines, crow’s feet or forehead lines, and even provide a mini-lift to the brow and corners of the mouth. Their reliability and predictability and the minimal discomfort have led to enormous acceptance by those who don’t want their face to tell their age. Esteem Day Spa is fortunate to have three highly trained registered nurses, Liz Hele, Shar Fleming and Samantha McCormack, with enormous experience in wrinkle- relaxing injections and dermal fillers. Their training is constantly updated, and under the personal guidance of Dr Terrence Scamp they provide Esteem with the final cog in the wheel, the right people.

So with the right knowledge, the right people and up-to-the-minute training techniques, equipment and products, Esteem Day Spa can truly claim to be state-of-the-art for both non-surgical rejuvenation and cosmetic surgery. For more information phone Esteem Day Spa 07 5539 1000. gCm

talking hyperhidrosis with sam mccormacki

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be a disabling condition affecting social and occupational activities, and is associated substantially with reduced quality of life. With Summer around the corner it can be a hard time for a hyperhidrosis sufferer. Statistics supplied from Allergan Australia 2009, show that 0.5-2.8 per cent of the population are known to be affected by this condition, however, the improvement of the quality of life these sufferers get from treating this condition could never be measured.

Hyperhidrosis truly hit home for me after a close family friend came to me asking me to help treat him. When he opened up to me and explained the impact on day-to-day life he experienced, it made me feel pleased that I could perform this medical condition with Botox on him to improve his self-esteem. It became clear to me this treatment truly works from the inside rather than traditional cosmetic injections working from the outside. The limitations he explained to me were how he would always have to buy new t-shirts after four wears due to stains a few wears created. Having to have a business partner do the front work for him as his excess sweating made him feel that he looked inexperienced, unprofessional and nervous, which he believed would impact on their financial revenue. He could never wear a suit without having to wear the jacket because he was too embarrassed to lift his arms up, which made him dread summer functions. When I looked at things from his perspective, I truly appreciated the role a hyperhidrosis treatment plays in a medical practice.

The procedure is a walk in, walk out one that consists of small, multiple intra-dermal injections given in a grid-like pattern all over the affected areas. There is no down time, it is safe, easy and gives generally a longer duration than typical anti-wrinkle injections, lasting up to 9-12 months. There are secondary causes of hyperhidrosis such as hyperthyroidism and pheochromocytoma, thus full health screenings are always carried out prior to injections to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The treatment of hyperhidrosis is not to achieve full anhidrosis, it is to reduce sweating to a physiologically normal level that patients find tolerable.

Socially, emotionally, occupationally and financially the treatment of hyperhidrosis cannot be undervalued. To some the treatment may be seen as excessive, but to others it is life-changing.

Sam McCormack is a registered nurse with four years industry experience. She is a dedicated injector at Esteem Day Spa under the direction of Dr Terrence Scamp.

hidden hearingthe new revolution

The rapid advancement in hearing aid technology has resulted in approximately 200 people a week being fitted with the

latest in digital hearing aids on the Gold Coast alone. In many cases it’s simply an improvement in clarity for speech that’s

required, but the difference these digital devices are making to people’s daily lives and ease of communication is incredible.

Page 89: Gold Coast Panache November/December 2010

www.goldcoastmagazine.com.au 87

If you look around and think that nobody’s wearing hearing aids, think again, chances are you just haven’t noticed. In the past few years millions of dollars has gone into the research and development of hearing-aid technology, meaning that most hearing aids are now diminutive in size, to the point where they can’t be

seen, and yet are so comfortable that you don’t know you’ve got them on. In the general population over the age of 40, the need for hearing aids is almost on par with the need for

glasses. The ability to hear is quite literally your licence to communicate with the world, and so if it gradually drops away you’re going to notice it, and it’s going to affect your quality of life. Even a mild hearing loss can really affect the clarity of sounds and the ease of daily communication. Often the difficulties people have are in specific situations, like hearing speech clearly in the presence of background noise. One may also find that they need to increase the volume of the TV above the comfort level of others, or are having to often ask others to repeat themselves.

It’s a sad situation that some people do not address their hearing concerns. Research shows that the longer a person leaves their hearing loss unattended, the poorer their hearing becomes over time. This is known as auditory deprivation, and is similar to the “use it or lose it” phenomenon. Essentially it means that over time the brain loses its ability to process certain sounds clearly. By using a hearing aid we can continue to stimulate the brain with the full spectrum of sounds and pitches, meaning that these areas of the brain remain useful and active.

The development of digital technology is perhaps the most significant advancement in hearing aids in recent years. Not only has it resulted in improved sound quality, but it means that all hearing aids can be uniquely programmed to match an individual’s hearing levels. In more recent times hearing aids have become fully automatic, meaning that users can now insert the device and forget about it. The automatic settings can also be matched to the lifestyle of the person.

For example, someone with a busy lifestyle who’s often in social environments will require a higher level of noise reduction than someone who spends most of their time at home in quiet. For those who are really technology savvy, the hearing aid can even be paired to Bluetooth devices, such as mobile phones and iPods. These recent developments in technology have resulted in an enormous increase in the number of people fitted with hearing aids. On the Gold Coast alone it is estimated that approximately 200 people or more a week are being fitted with the latest in digital devices. Clients can generally choose between a behind the ear or completely in the ear device, however, certain styles can be more suitable depending on the type of hearing loss and the lifestyle of the client.

The first step towards doing something about your hearing is to book a free assessment with an audiologist to see which hearing aids are available to suit your hearing levels and lifestyle. A1 Discreet Hearing Aids are the leading provider of the smallest, most discreet digital hearing aids on the Gold Coast and supply a full range of the latest technology. They have a permanent hearing centre at Q Super Centre in Mermaid Waters, and visiting sites at Parkwood and Coolangatta medical centres. Phone A1 Discreet Hearing Aids on 07 5578 6669 to book in for an obligation free hearing assessment and consultation with a university-qualified audiologist. gcm

Fit BitEverthing health...

Would you eat a purple carrot? It would take a little time to get used to, but these strange- looking vegetables are jampacked with vitamin goodness. Actually, the purple carrot contains four times the amount of anthocyanin found in blueberries. For those who don’t know what an anthocyanin is, they are the powerful antioxidants that slow dangerous blood clotting within the body, safeguarding the heart. Keep an eye out for the purple carrot, coming to a grocery store near you.

gcm PROMOTION

There’s more to the Gold Coast than just surf, sand and sun – our thriving tourist town is fast becoming a centre of excellence in high-quality healthcare. Ramsay Healthcare, Australia’s largest and most respected private hospital operator, invests heavily in the area not only for the benefit of local residents, but for the wider community.

PINDARA PRIVATE Ramsay Healthcare’s investment in the Gold Coast is big, $63 million has been spent on the recently completed stage one redevelopment of Pindara Private Hospital with more to come as part of a multiphase master plan to improve the facility. Located at Benowa, Pindara Private Hospital has serviced the growing population on the northern end of the Gold Coast for the past 39 years. In this time, the facility has had several different owners, but none have committed to major renovations or extensions.

Ramsay’s decision to expand and redevelop Pindara means an additional 50 beds, four new operating theatres, a dedicated endoscopy unit, a 13-day bed incology unit, two additional ICU beds, new Specialist Suites and a multi-storey car-park will be added to the facility. This investment also adds new, much needed services for the benefit of the community, including a new 13-bed children’s ward. This new ward is great news for parents and complements the existing services available to families through the hospital’s busy maternity unit, with its four delivery suites and 16-cot special care nursery.

The Pindara paediatrics ward Nurse Unit Manager, Jill Barnes, said her new ward is an exciting new service for the community. “Mums and dads can now have peace of mind that their child is able to access safe and secure private hospital care at Pindara Private Hospital, should the need ever arise. This is especially re-assuring in an emergency situation. Pindara Hospital already offers the community a fabulous emergency service – adding a paediatrics ward, completes us in a way. We can care for kids from birth for the rest of their lives.”

Pindara is an acute medical, surgical and maternity facility recognised nationally and internationally as a leading Gold Coast provider of healthcare services in cardiac and coronary care; obstetrics, gynaecology and IVF; day surgery; and orthopaedic, breast, bariatric/obesity, colorectal, ear nose & throat, general, vascular and plastic surgery; as well as gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, urology and urogynecology. There is also a cardiac catheterisation lab, an 12-bed combined ICU/CCU as well as ward accommodation, in a combination of private and shared rooms for medical and surgical patients.

Patient health, safety and comfort are the hospital’s main concerns and the Pindara team is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to patients. All departments are staffed by experienced and skilled healthcare professionals who are familiar with the latest developments and research in their respective fields. Pindara is fully accredited by ISO 9001 that ensures that hospitals provide the highest standards of service.

PINDARA CARDIAC AND EMERGENCY CENTRE When accidents happen, Gold Coast residents and the thousands of domestic and international holiday makers who visit this popular tourist destination each year can rely on around-the-clock emergency medical care provided through Pindara Cardiac and Emergency Centre. First opened in 1987, the centre was at the time the first private emergency centre in the country. Since then it has grown to be one of the busiest 24-hour emergency centres on the Gold Coast, treating in excess of 400,000 patients in total and on average over 22,000 emergencies per annum.

Today the Pindara Cardiac and Emergency Centre is staffed by a team of 17 dedicated emergency-trained doctors and nursing staff. The team delivers diagnostic and treatment services around the clock and networks closely with local general practitioners and specialists to ensure follow-up care is provided where necessary.

Patients can self-present or be referred to the centre by their general practitioner or other medical specialist. Every patient is triaged by an experienced registered nurse on arrival. This ensures that patients are treated in the order of their clinical urgency and that their treatment is timely for their needs. Patients are assessed by experienced medical personnel before the appropriate specialists are consulted.

The Pindara Cardiac and Emergency Centre is well-equipped with life-saving technology and is supported by 24-hour radiology with X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan and nuclear medicine imaging; as well as Pindara Private Hospital’s state-of-the-art operating theatres, intensive care and coronary care units with cardiac catheter laboratory and on-site pathology services. For a comprehensive and personalised emergency service Pindara Cardiac and Emergency Centre is a leading provider on the Gold Coast.

MATERNITY uNIT Gold Coast mothers-to-be are in safe hands in the Pindara Private Hospital Maternity Unit thanks to the individualised, holistic care provided by an integrated team of highly skilled midwives and maternity trained nurses, accredited obstetricians and health professionals, whose aim is to provide the best possible outcomes for the childbearing family.

The Pindara Private Maternity Unit provides an expert service. The expertise and contemporary skills of the unit’s staff ensure mothers deliver their babies according to the personal birth plan of their choice, while being supported by experienced Pindara midwives. Delivering at Pindara Private Hospital offers mothers a welcoming and relaxing environment as well as benefits including comfortable, air-conditioned modern surroundings, contemporary well-equipped birthing suites and private-room accommodation with ensuite.

There is even a Regal Suite package designed to allow a new mum and her partner to bond and be totally involved in the care of their newborn, as well as to add that extra touch of luxury. The Regal Suite package includes accommodation and all meals for a partner, as well as little luxuries such as a fresh fruit bowl; mini bar stocked with a range of non-alcoholic beverages; complimentary cotton-weave robe and matching lounge slippers; a pamper pack for both new parents and a local newspaper.

All new Pindara babies are attended to by an on-call paediatrician 24 hours a day; and the Unit has a Level 2 Special Care Nursery with experienced nursery staff in case of an emergency.

ThE bIRTh CENTRE The Birth Centre at Pindara Private Hospital is a homely environment. Birthing suites are designed for comfort, safety and relaxation to allow each new mother to choose her own birthing experience. Medical equipment is easily accessible, but functionally concealed in wall units.

To ensure specialised neonatal care is always available, a fully equipped neonatal ‘special care’ nursery is conveniently located within the birth centre. Highly skilled staff and the latest technology are available in the nursery.

If you are pregnant and want to know how to book into Pindara Maternity Unit, ask your general practitioner for a referral to an obstetrician. Your obstetrician will provide you with the necessary forms for admission to the Pindara Private Hospital Maternity Unit. Complete the admission forms as soon as possible to confirm your booking. You can also have an informal visit to the unit to view the facilities and meet the midwives.

Head above the rest…Well done to the team at Burleigh Brewing Co, who have just added another trophy to the poolroom after they took out the gold at the World Beer Championships in the US. The winning brew, Black Giraffe, is a collaboration with local Kenton Campbell, the man behind Zarraffa’s Coffee, combining a tasteful mix of, you guessed it, beer and coffee. Judges at the competition described Black Giraffe as ‘exceptional’ and ranked it the highest in the Speciality Beer category, but the crew that created it says it has the ability to make you feel all tingly inside. Raspberry + Rose Chocolate Wafers Makes about 24

150g best-quality dark chocolate (72% cocoa solids)150 best-quality white chocolate3-4 tablespoons freeze-driedraspberry crispies (approx. 25g)3-4 tablespoons crystallised rose petals3-4 tablespoons pink sugared rose chips or sugar sprinklesLine two large baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment. Break the dark and white chocolate into pieces and melt separately in heatproof bowls set over pans of simmering water. Stir until smooth, remove from heat and cool slightly. Spoon heaped teaspoonfuls of melted chocolate on to the prepared baking sheets, spreading the chocolate into discs with the back of the spoon. Scatter with raspberry crispies, rose petals and rose chips or sugar sprinkles. Set aside to cool and harden completely before removing from the parchment with a parchment knife.

Strawberry + Vanilla Conserve Makes 3-4 small jars

450g preserving sugarJuice of 1 lemon1 vanilla pod550g small ripe strawberries, hulledTip the sugar into a preserving pan or other larger pan. Add the lemon juice and two tablespoons of water. Split the vanilla pod in half lengthways, then using the tip of a small knife scrap out the little black seeds and add the pod and seeds to the pan. Set over a low heat and stir from time to time until the sugar has dissolved.Remove the pan from heat, add strawberries and gently stir to coat in the hot syrup. Leave to stand for 30-60 minutes, to allow the fruit to soften and release its juices into the syrup.Return the pan to a medium heat and cook at a steady boil, without stirring, for about 10 minutes or until the conserve reaches settling point. Remove the pan from the heat, discard the vanilla pod and leave conserve to cool in the pan for 10 minutes as this ensures the strawberries are evenly distributed throughout once the conserve is bottled. Carefully spoon into sterilised jars and seal immediately. Leave to cool completely before labelling.

Macaroons Makes about 20

150g icing sugar75g ground almonds2 large egg whitesPinch of salt35g castor sugarPink, green or lilac food-colouring pastePreheat the oven to 170°C and line two solid baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment. Sift the icing sugar and ground almonds together in a bowl. Place the egg whites in the bowl of a free-standing electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Add the salt and whisk until the egg whites form soft peaks. Add the castor sugar a teaspoon at a time, whisking well after each addition. Continue whisking until the mixture is stiff and glossy. Add the food-colouring paste, using the point of a wooden skewer and mixing well to colour the mixture evenly. Fit a piping bag with a one-centimetre plain nozzle and pipe five-centimetre disks on to the baking parchment. Dampen the tip of your finger and gently flatten the top of any of the macaroons that are peaky, then give the tray a sharp tap on the work surface to knock out air bubbles. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the mixture to settle, then bake on the middle shelf of a preheated oven for 9-10 minutes.Remove from the oven and leave to cool on the tray. Once completely cold, sandwich the macaroons together with jam, cream, buttercream or ganache and serve. gCM

witches falls winery It was cold and wet by mid-afternoon so the girls at the cellar door, god bless, fitted me out with a company jacket. Witches Falls has an impressive list of mostly Granite Belt born wines on offer and winemaker Jon Heslop delivers subtlety and balance across the range. The whites included a 2010 Fiano, a grape variety originating in the south of Italy, all fresh and tropical and a 2009 Wild Ferment Chardonnay, the fruit flavours balanced perfectly by the judicious use of oak. The reds boast an excellent 2007 Cabernet, a spicy light-bodied 2009 Grenache – great barby red – and the beautiful 2004 Prophecy Shiraz with fruit sourced from the Clare Valley, cherry ripe and black forest cake in a bottle. Thank you, ladies, I’ll be back, so keep the jacket handy.

HERITAGE ESTATE WINESHeritage Estate Wines have had a presence in the Granite Belt region since 1992 and their wines have had considerable success, with their 2007 Reserve Chardonnay awarded Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year in 2008. The 2008 Chardonnay would appear to be a good follow-up with stone fruit and some oaky vanilla on the palate and a vein of fine citrus-like acidity leading to a dry finish. The 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon tasted of blackcurrant, mint and some toasty oak and should drink well as it softens over the next year or two. The cellar door at Tamborine has a good feel about it with an open fireplace and one of the best outlooks on the mountain, with views back down the valley to the coast.

Enjoy the wine and the view...

CEDAR CREEK ESTATE VINEYARD & WINERY

The Cedar Creek Winery on Hartley Road is quite a set-up with a rainforest walk, wedding chapel, stylish restaurant and cellar door. Grapes are sourced from the South Burnett region, about three hours north-west of the coast. I tasted fresh, crisp unwooded 2009 Chardonnay, a soft, medium-bodied 2008 Cabernet Merlot and a 2005 Shiraz that was showing the benefits of some bottle age. My picks though, were probably the sticky called Entwined – a blend of chardonnay, semillon and Verdelho – and the JP Selection Tawny Port. The main attraction for me here was the recently opened Queensland Wine Centre. The centre profiles around 100 different Queensland wines, with a different winery showcased each month, a very welcome addition to the local wine scene and reason enough to visit the mountain.

Tamborine Mountain is a leisurely 40-minute drive from the heart of the Gold Coast. It boasts an eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, art galleries, antique stores and spectacular views on both sides of the plateau. There are B&Bs beautiful rainforest walks, breweries and lo and behold – wineries! So with this little fact in mind, I ventured up the mountain recently with a view to trying some wine and enjoying the scenery. There are seven wineries on the mountain, and while I only look at three here, I do suggest you take the time to visit them all, respect the investment these companies have made and appreciate what they have to offer, all right here on our doorstep in the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland. Enjoy!

Mountain Yield

The Queensland Wine Centre was officially opened on September 9 by the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh. What was previously the storage and winemaking area in the main building is now a striking, open-plan tasting area and an eye-catching barrel bar. It gives Queensland wine fans the opportunity to sample and taste wine from 14 different Queensland wineries all under the one roof. Food and wine matching classes are on the agenda as are weekly wine specials. The Queensland Wine Centre can be found at Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard & Winery, 144 Hartley Road, North Tamborine. Out DiningTen Japanese

Restaurant 07 5570 1010

Heaven! Surely we have all used that word at some point to describe a place or feeling we’ve had. For most of us, heaven conjures up feelings of bliss, transporting us to a place

of peace and tranquillity. Did you know that in Japanese, heaven translates to the word ‘ten’? We didn’t – until we experienced it for ourselves recently at Ten Japanese Restaurant at Broadbeach. May we invite you to share with us then–a glimpse of heaven.

VISUAL FEAST Situated in the Meriton Pegasus building opposite the Casino, Ten Japanese restaurant is neighboured by a bustling Chinese restaurant. It’s when these two cultures are blatantly put side by side that you realise the immense difference between them. Whereas the Chinese is fast-paced and almost harsh, when you enter through the two magnificent custom-made doors of Ten, serenity overtakes and penetrates your soul.

AURA OF THE SPACE Ten may mean heaven, but the room is very earthy, filled with the elements of nature. Stone is used in a variety of form and dimension, with granite, marble, exotic tiles and stone pebbles scattered throughout. There are two major attention-seekers vying for top spot. One is the glass-walled wine room, which teases with over 1200 wines, and the other is the stunning teppanyaki, a semi-circle of glistening stainless steel adorned by 16 elegant high- backed chairs and an exhaust canopy that would probably cost more than some houses. Further afar, the sushi-bar with its hand-woven red screen has an abundant cascade of fresh seafood, while the private dining room offers just that! It’s all very impressive.

TASTE JOURNEY Dining at Ten Japanese restaurant is a multi-faceted experience. It holds the style and elegance of a fine dining restaurant while offering a fascinating multiplicity of cooking styles. Foodies, forget TV’s MasterChef or The Iron Chef, as in the teppanyaki you have a unique cooking experience happening right in front of you,

with your own chef. Ladies who lunch a lot – you should lunch a lot here, as it offers three or six courses for $45 or $70, respectively, as well as a la carte. Dinner heads to the high end of the budget with your choice of a la carte, or a nine-course, 12-tastes degustation. Do check on the web though, as menus and prices vary regularly.

Whoever commented that ‘degustation is to eating, what bonsai is to gardening,’ explained it well. Exquisite black and silver glass plates are the canvas for course one with its three tastes–tart of pacific snow crab; slivers of smoked ocean trout with oba aioli; and grilled foie gras with duck confit and orange. Next, ravioli is filled with a ragout of Wagyu and bathes in a white asparagus soup with poached quail egg. Coral trout is cooked in front of you, hot hot heat, herbs and broth sizzle under a copper lid, and the result is mutually crisp and moist. Lamb fillet, scented with thyme, barely feels the heat of the teppan before it’s yours, embossed with shaved WA black truffle. Scampi wrapped in prosciutto plays with the heat for a mere moment then it’s on to cauliflower puree, lemon butter drizzled about, shredded radicchio challenging with its bitterness but perfect. Strawberry and calvados sorbet is next, aimed to jolt the palate back into swing before premium-grade nine+ Wagyu is seared, sliced and served with king oyster mushrooms as compatriots.

Oh... but there’s still more. Course eight–garlic rice cooked in front of you with the finely cut left-over-end-bits from the Wagyu – crunchy and juicy and fatty and very more-some (just don’t tell your doctor). The miso soup that follows will astound you – never have we had a miso as delicate yet so robust in flavour.

Finally... layers of chocolate and caramel mousse followed by a traditional Japanese tea ceremony leaves us in no doubt this is one of the finest dining experiences we’ve had.

THE FINER DROP Sommelier/barman Marc just adores his role and is eager to show off his merchandise, which include a dedicated sake wine list. Try the bamboo sake, which chills in its bamboo housing for three days, the extracted woody flavours greatly embellishing the sake. Ask to have a stroll through the glass wine room, as every vintage of Grange from 1966-1984 lay before you, as do golden draped bottles of Louis Roederer Cristal champagne and a myriad of others, including their own Ten label wines.

THE CARE FACTOR Wendy Vaughan, who has a track record of involvement in award-winning restaurants, has been bought in to ensure East meets West smoothly, and consequently this is service with a capital S. As you are seated, cushions are placed perfectly for your back, and ladies handbags are placed on their own individual handbag holder. Staff, adorned in white gloves, serve the food and explain each dish with a palpable sense of respect, ever smiling, gently gliding.

ON REFLECTION A myriad of chefs have exerted their understanding of Japanese cuisine to bring you the pinnacle of fine food. You will be transported to heaven by way of service, quality of food, and the serene ambience. gcm

So many restaurants, so little time! With such an array of diverse eateries on the Gold Coast one finds oneself sighing at the thought of discovering them all. Whether you admit it or

not, the safer option is to stick with a favourite you’ve eaten at a million times, which means sometimes the little secrets we should discover tend to go untold. This is why I see it within my right to free any unfamiliar anxiety and enlighten you of a welcoming little restaurant on Surf Parade, Anew Restaurant. The name says it all.

VISUAL FEAST Broadbeach seems to be a food lover’s dream location. The choices are neverending with the vast array of award-winning restaurants and chic coffee houses presiding along Surf Parade. A beachside ambience fused with tasteful fashions and a rich night life tends to be the initial drawcard, yet the exquisite culinary taste keeps the crowds coming back time after time. One of the area’s most recent additions, Anew Restaurant, fits into the Broadbeach aesthetic as if it had been there all along.

AURA OF THE SPACE Derived from the shortage of comfortable fine-dining venues, Anew prides itself on its ability to offer the diner just that. Where modern meets traditional in a blend of burgundy, black leather, dangling rhomboid lighting and an ivory Phoenician ceiling; it’s the type of place you know you can be assured a lavish meal without worrying about the finer formal details. Inside it’s as if the world in the Broadbeach strip doesn’t exist, only the music of the evening resonates through the walls. And if people-watching is a favoured hobby the alfresco area renders a banquet of entertainment.

TASTE JOURNEY Christmas is usually a time spent with loved ones, exchanging gifts and enjoying the hot weather. It is also a time for eating, so if you are one to rejoice in the merry tradition then I would recommend you take a look at the December specials here. Throughout the month, for just $65 per head you and your guests can enjoy a three-course Christmas menu, including a glass of bubbly.

The a la carte menu will appease any steak fan, chicken enthusiast and seafood devotee, but don’t mistake this for just any regular collation. I stammered to decide between an entrée, let alone a main. The dilemma: Coffin Bay oysters in natural red wine and vinaigerette with shallots or sautéed scallops wrapped in prosciutto bedde on spiced cauliflower puree with a vanilla and curry infused oil. The scallops won out and I did not regret the decision at all when I was lapping up the last of the curious cauliflower puree.

Usually a good steak is a very particular request, however, I had no qualms with the succulent eye fillet reef and beef I was served up next. Sensibly topped with a grilled tiger prawn scallop and dripping in just the right amount of chive hollandaise sauce (not too much, not too little). A base constructed of roasted kipfler potatoes, broccolini and a red wine jus, do I really need to say any more?

I had originally decided to wave dessert but found it unfeasible to say no after such a lip-smacking beginning. A specialty of Anew is their in-house made icecreams which are honourably exhibited in the icecream palette selection. Four mini cones and two delightful sauces: pistachio, passion fruit, lime and mint and orange sorbet were my choosing, however, it does vary from day to day depending on

the chef ’s mood. Top it off with white chocolate and/or passionfruit sauce and immediately you find clarity behind the stanza “I scream, you scream, we all scream for icecream.”

THE FINER DROP Like most tasteful restaurants, the wine list is always of praise. With an assortment of reds and whites at practical prices, a complimenting glass to suit your order is easy to come across. Yet now with summer sizzling a holiday cocktail doesn’t go astray, so allow me to recommend the Queensland Ice Tea. A smooth concoction of rum, orange liqueur, lemon, mint and ginger beer; appropriate for those days of beach-swept hair and sandy skin.

THE CARE FACTOR Executive head chef Peter Sawtell may not have any international expertise, but his creative flair with food is very impressive. Although predominantly a modern Australian menu, Peter blends a spice of life from all over the world: Oriental, Iranian, Moroccan and the list goes on. Out of the kitchen the service is accommodating, polite and always with a smile. You won’t find any attitude here as the staff are more than willing to assist with any dining need.

ON REFLECTION Modern Australian with a transnational twist! None of this fine-dining aristocracy, Anew simply delivers the high-styled gourmet dishes in a warm and friendly environment. Ever so suited to our laid-back Gold Coast lifestyle, many a summer’s day lunch or Christmas dinner party will be enjoyed in this innovative new restaurant. gcm

Backyard BlissLooking for the perfect party venue this summer to catch up with friends? Look no further than your own back yard. All you need is a few essentials to ensure smooth sailing and you are set for an afternoon or evening of fun. In true Aussie-style, the barbecue is the ultimate cooking tool. But don’t think your menu is limited to piggies in blankets. Barbecues are capable of producing gourmet delights, the only limitation is the chef behind the tongs! Think marinated chunks of the finest cuts of meat, skewers of herbed juicy prawns and balsamic onions. Apart from plenty of food, number one priority is a kitted-out, outdoor entertaining area complete with a plush outdoor setting (note perfect specimen pictured). Pay close attention to the details, especially when designing your table setting, and a colour theme doesn’t go astray either. When it comes to the menu other than barbecue offerings, your guests will appreciate fresh, seasonal produce such as summer salads, fresh seafood and fruit-laden cocktails. Need a little help kick-starting your outdoor entertaining collection? Domayne can get you up and running in time for summer.

I chose to stay at Sunway Resort and Spa, just 35 minutes from the airport and 25 minutes in good traffic from the centre of KL. The resort is a destination in itself with a choice of over

1200 rooms spread across five different properties that are suited to all tastes and budgets. I opt for a hotel-style room and facilities that include a choice of five restaurants, heavenly Mandura Spa and access to what can only be described as a mega leisure complex that has to be seen to be believed.

Firstly there is the Sunway Lagoon, which is an amazing ‘Lost City’ inspired complex that includes a thrilling theme park, water park, zoo and all sorts of active adventures that can be combined with a dip in the cooling waters of the giant lagoon complete with white sandy beach. The Sunway Lagoon can be accessed (for an additional charge) right from the hotel lobby and is heaven for kids and not too bad for adults looking to escape the heat either.

The Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall connects with all properties too and has a ground-floor ice-skating rink, cinemas, shops upon shops upon shops and a host of dining options to choose from. There is the on-site Mandura Spa for quiet time (and it is remarkably cheap), and if you want to up the ante a bit on nightfall – you can head to Euphoria where the famed Ministry of Sound blends international grooves and sophisticated dance ambience into an all-night entertainment option.

It is difficult to leave the resort, and if you have kids, prepare to spend most of your time here, but if you can head out and explore KL – there is an amazing array of sightseeing options, shopping,

It’s a dawn arrival and the heat is already closing in. It was an almost midnight departure from Brisbane but a bump up (yes!) to business class, including an indulgent flat bed, movies on demand and copious amounts of service and cuisine, ensure I touch down on the tarmac in KL thoroughly refreshed and ready to hit the shops on my first day.

markets, street food and even a flight simulator experience to try.Malaysian Airlines have recently introduced this adventure at Subang Airport, which is home to their pilot-training facility. This is no conceptualised, sugar-coated tourist venture with slick salesmen and an opportunistic photographer ready to snap you when you got your ‘wings’. This is the real deal, a truly organic experience where you will rub shoulders with real pilots, speak with real captains and have the chance to fly in the real training simulator, which until now has been reserved for real professional pilots in training.

After some time in the classroom to run through the rules and safety regulations the captain insists we are ready to fly. Malaysian Airlines has six flight simulators, including a B747-400, B777-200, A330-300, 2 B737-400s and a Fokker 50. From the outside, the simulator looks like a mobile toilet block, but when the hydraulics that drive it spring it to action it can complete just about any real plane manoeuvre, which includes take-off, landing and my all-time favourite – ditching into the ocean!

My colleague attempts a take-off, which starts off pretty disastrously as he pulls the nose up too fast and the tail of the plane scrapes in protest along the runway. He does manage to get into the air and after some cruising at altitude, sightseeing over simulated cities and coastlines complete with prevailing weather conditions courtesy of the captain, it is time for me to land this baby. Let’s just say, my first attempt was worse than ugly and resembled something from Plane Crash Investigation but on second attempt I land in a field beside the runway – which is means we survive.

But aside from new adventure, Kuala Lumpur is renowned as a tax- free shopping paradise, and while there is lots of history, architecture and sights to see, it is the lure of bargain shopping that attracts most visitors. From some of the world’s most luxurious brands to hip high street labels, local designers, cosmetics, accessories, footwear and fashion to suit every taste, KL really does have something for everyone. From the biggest malls in South-East Asia where you could be blissfully lost for days to bustling night markets, outlets, whole streets dedicated to shopping and the effervescent Chinatown – KL is retail therapy with a capital R.

For designer fashion, check out Suria KLCC underneath the landmark twin towers. A host of big names along with those that may be new, but definitely worth discovering, are all crammed into six glorious floors. Berjaya Times Square is home to over 1000 retail outlets and comes complete with the Cosmos World Theme Park that will offer some shopping reprieve for kids.

The Pavilion is the newest shopping mall to open and has seven storeys of indulgent European-inspired decor with an incredible 1.37 million square feet of dedicated shopping space to explore. But if you are looking for something more authentic (and cheaper on the purse) head to the iconic Sungei Wang Plaza, which has been serving up discount shopping for over 20 years.

KL is a well-rounded destination, and although still most popular as a shop-over on the way to somewhere else, is certainly worth considering as an end destination too, particularly if you are looking for value for your Aussie travel dollar. gcm

gcm DRIVE GUIDE

MINIFeverDesigned to be enjoyed, the MINI Cooper is a bundle of excitable energy with four wheels. Sounds like a lot of fun? Well it is. Aimee Ley took the MINI for a spin and never wanted to hand back the keys.

There is something nostalgic about the MINI and they say purchasing one is like buying into a family, a family of MINI enthusiasts that is. MINI was first produced in the late 1950s by the British Motor Corporation and has

enjoyed a popular following of fans ever since. It wasn’t until 1994 when BMW took over the Rover Group they inherited the MINI brand and have since released exciting new models that have retained the original MINI charm fans have grown to appreciate. And it’s not hard to see why. Small in stature but with a big heart, the MINI is best described as a little bundle of fun decked out with the best of everything you would expect from a brand name like BMW.

Page 123: Gold Coast Panache November/December 2010

www.goldcoastmagazine.com.au 121

DESIGN BMW liken the MINI design to that of a bulldog, and it makes sense. With a long wheel base, a wheel at each corner and minimal overhang on the front and rear, the MINI is stocky and athletic, giving it a distinctive look and a distinguished drive, but more on that later. For the purpose of this test, I was handed the keys of a sprightly MINI Cooper S Cabrio Chilli. In MINI language that means convertible with all the bells and whistles. Everything about the MINI Cabrio screams ‘look at me’ from the racy radiator grille, sporty inlet in the bonnet and chrome-plated double pipe exhaust system, not to mention the abundance of chrome throughout and hot Black Star Bullet 17-inch rims. Mind you the standard model doesn’t look too bad either and there are plenty of extras you can buy on the side to make your MINI uniquely your own.

Once inside, the quirky design experience continues. The most notable feature, the school clock-sized speedometer, positioned centrally on the dash. So it’s not the most practical of positions, but then again, who really cares you are driving a MINI! The most important aspect of the interior is that it resonates the quality you would expect if you were to slide into one of the new BMW models just with a retro twist. No plasticy finishes, no cheap imitations, just quality. Buttons and knobs are replaced with flick switches that make you feel like you are in a cockpit, and with the hood down you feel like you might just take off! When it comes to space the MINI does well for a car of such small stature. The driver and passenger are adequately catered for with plenty of leg space, but those in the back are a tad limited.

The Cabrio can be transformed to a convertible at the flick of a switch. You can even put the top down on the go if time is of the essence. Once down and folded neatly behind the roll-over bars, the MINI is really at its peak. There is more wind buffering in the front seats than experienced in other convertibles thanks to the MINI’s upright windscreen, which is more aerodynamically efficient. If you don’t feel like going the whole hog you can enjoy the sunroof, which is particularly pleasant if you want to see the stars without your hair getting blown about in the evening winds.

ON THE ROAD The MINI Cabrio is best experienced with the hood down and the wind blowing through your hair. It is also the stance that attracts the most admiring glances if that tickles your fancy and also brings the biggest smile to your face. Actually, it’s hard to wipe the smile off your face once behind the three-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel. The MINI begs to be driven with haste, but is equally comfortable cruising the open roads as it is mastering the curves of an uphill climb. Whatever you do, where ever you go, the MINI goes with guts. You can thank the 175 horsepower of the 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder engine in the Cabrio. Combine this with a sprightly turbocharged engine and a tight six-speed manual transmission and you have a recipe for adventure. If that’s not enough, the Sport button transforms the MINI into a pocket rocket, further increasing the responsiveness of the steering and accelerator pedal. With the manual transmission this makes for a true track-style experience, and in the automatic transmission it reduces the time taken between gear changes. Ready, set, go!

Put simply, the MINI is a blast to drive. The low centre of gravity helps you feel secure on the road and is signified

by superior ‘go-kart’-style steering, which ensures you also feel in control of the vehicle no matter how tight the corner. It is agile, stable and has cornering ability to rival other vehicles in the segment. The multiple-control-arm rear axle ensures optimum contact between the wheels and the road, for the best possible traction. It is this feature that gives you that ‘hugging the road’ feeling you get in the MINI, especially with the aluminium construction that keeps the vehicles weight to a minimum and increases agility. The MINI also features a single-joint spring-strut front axle, which means two drive shafts of equal length feature in the front suspension. This not only minimises the extent to which the drive train interferes with the steering, but it also optimises the car’s cornering, acceleration and braking making for a very responsive drive.

SAFETY Not only does the MINI look good, but it offers premium safety as well. There are four airbags fitted as standard in the Cabrio as well as the three-point belt system, belt tensioners and integrated belt-catch, which means the driver and passenger have the best possible protection in the event of a crash. The MINI’s bodywork has also been constructed with safety in mind. The upper and middle parts of the doors have increased structural rigidity so to protect you in the result of a collision. The kids in the back are not forgotten either thanks to the active roll-over bar made of high-strength aluminum. Normally undetectable, the roll-over bar conveniently deploys upwards in the event of a crash in record speed of 150 milliseconds. How’s that for peace of mind.

LITTLE EXTRAS Good things come in small packages and when it comes to the MINI there are plenty of little extras that make this vehicle the classy option it is. Automatic climate control for example, which rapidly adjusts the interior temperature to how you like it and keeps it constant. The MINI will also pump hot air into your foot wells when you have the top down on cold days and blows cool air at the passengers on hot days. Always thinking about the passengers, there is the much-loved seat heating option, which has a choice of three different settings.

Just when you thought the MINI couldn’t get any better you discover the audio system. The Cabrio Chilli is decked out with the Harman Kardon hi-fi system, which features a 480-watt digital multi-channel amplifier and 10 high-performance speakers integrated throughout the interior. The result is quality that is handy, especially when you are cruising along with the top down. When it comes to pumping your favourite tunes through those speakers the MINI has you covered. Conveniently located beneath the centre console, a USB audio interface allows you to hook up your iPod or MP3 Player. Once connected you can browse through your albums stored on your device via the radio or navigation display. Very handy. There is also the Bluetooth hands-free kit option, which is worth taking up as the MINI even comes with a special hiding hole in the centre arm rest for your phone to be stored.

WHERE TO GET ONE If you are thinking of joining the MINI family, Bruce Lynton’s MINI Garage at 80 High St , Southport will be able to get you started with a test drive. Phone 07 5557 7990 or brucelynton.minigarage.com.au gcm

If famous screen siren Sophia Loren was to be compared to an object, the quintessential Italian beauty would take the form of a Maserati GranCabrio. Sexy and glamorous, the Maserati GranCabrio landed in Australia earlier this year after debuting in 2009 at the Frankfurt International Auto Show. The vehicle is Maserati’s first four-seat convertible in the history of the brand and features a canvas soft top and a 4.7-litre V8 engine. Lust-have or must-have, the Maserati GrandCabrio is a true statement of style.

gcm DRIVE GUIDE with Aimee Ley

The brand Volvo has founded its reputation on that of matchless safety mixed with sophisticated Scandinavian style.

You will be happy to know the all-new C70 doesn’t fall far from the Volvo tree. Like the revised Volvo C30 range, the C70

has recently undergone a revamp to bring an even classier act to an already brimming stable of super-stylish vehicles.

classact DESIGN If you are one whom loves to have their cake and eat it too, you will be ecstatic to be introduced to the Volvo C70. As the second-generation convertible from the brand, the C70 offers you the bonus of two cars in one, two really great cars without compromising on design or style. Those clever designers at Volvo carefully created the C70 as a coupe first before making the adjustments to create a convertible from an already seamless design. The result is an elegant vehicle with short, low and relatively wide proportions giving a sporty aesthetic to an otherwise luxury profile. Many of the C70’s updates from the latter model have focused on the front of the vehicle where the new V shape, as seen in the upcoming S60 design,

has made a welcome appearance. The freshly designed headlights now sweep gracefully into the mudguards, slotting perfectly in with the new front air vents. Move to the back and the C70 has a noticeably cleaner, wider appearance, plus the addition of flashy LED lights and a re-profiled bumper.

Jump into what is said to be the most comfortable driver’s seat in the industry and soak up what the C70 has to offer. First impressions count here and the C70 does not disappoint. True to Scandinavian design, the C70 features uncluttered spaces, honest materials and good function, which in turn make for a visually appealing space and enhanced driving experience. You will love the clever design

components incorporated throughout the vehicle, including the unique floating console that gives you everything you need at your fingertips. The grey and white Oyster Burst trim option, inspired by the Swedish Hagstrom guitars made famous by the likes of Presley and Hendrix, is available and looks fantastic. But this is not your only option when it comes to the interior. The lavish soft leather seats are available in a selection of delicious colours including chocolate and vanilla, along with an array of personalisation options for the trims. Luxurious yet practical, the C70 is designed to carry four adults and does so comfortably. Passengers will be pleasantly surprised at the leg room and will enjoy the deeply contoured back seats, which hug passengers, giving an increased feeling of safety. Not that you need it, you are riding in a Volvo.

Bored with the coupe? No problem. With the push of a button and in 30 seconds flat you will be behind the wheel of a flashy convertible. Roof? What roof? Thanks to an amazing feat of motoring engineering, the C70’s retractable roof conveniently splits into three pieces before ever so gently folding itself into the boot. Unlike other convertibles, this feature does not mean your boot space is unusable once the top is off, as thanks to Volvo’s special load-assistance function you can still use your boot with no hassles at all. Again, always with safety in mind, the roof cannot retract unless you have your foot on the brake to activate it, so there is no chance of passengers accidently activating the setting.

on the road The Volvo C70 can be likened to a gentleman and you, the driver are similar to that of a lady friend. The Volvo is constantly thinking about you, predicting your every move and ensuring you are comfortable, happy and safe. The C70 is packed with features to ensure you are well-equipped to have your most satisfying drive ever. Every aspect of the C70 is easy. Your mirrors are electric, your seats heated and there is even a memory function on the driver’s seat that stores three separate seat settings, something that is appreciated when there is more than one driver. You will love the retractable door mirrors that fold flat against the car when you park and fold back out when you unlock the car. Not only does this feature keep your C70 safe in busy car parks, but it also provides ground lighting which is particularly useful at night when getting in and out of the car. Very thoughtful.

Now for what’s under the hood. The Volvo C70 features a five-cylinder engine available in either a 2.4-litre in the opening S model or the 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit in the T5 option. Both models are available with a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, with the choice of a sequential shift mode in lieu of the standard five-speed manual in the C70S and a six-speed manual in the T5. If you are looking for a luxury drive that is also extremely responsive (especially in the T5 model) you will be more than content behind the wheel of the C70.

SaFetY The team at Volvo says state-of-the-art technology goes into every car they make to support the safety of the driver and the occupants. Comforting to know, especially considering Volvo is known for producing the safest cars in the world. Dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags and the door-mounted inflatable curtain airbags are fitted throughout as well as clever anti-whiplash front seats, side impact protection system, safety-belt pretensioners and anti-lock brakes with Emergency Brake Assist. There is also a Roll-Over Protection System that deploys steel roll-over bars to protect the passengers in the event of a crash.

Other safety measures include the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), which uses rear-facing cameras installed in the door mirrors to keep a lookout on either side of the car. As a vehicle enters your blind spot a orange light is activated internally near your door mirrors so you always know when it is safe to change lanes. Then there is Park Assist, which cleverly helps you park in even the tightest of spaces, and Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) that enhances your driving stability by helping maintain traction no matter what conditions you are driving in. Again this is one gentleman of a vehicle.

Another fancy feature is the Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) that carefully analyses your driving and delays secondary information from the car, such as the GSM phone in the event of intense steering, braking or acceleration so not to cause you further distractions. Once your driving has calmed down and returned to normal, the delayed information is presented.

Where to Get one The Volvo C70 is perfect for the driver who wants a luxury vehicle with immaculate Scandinavian design without feeling pretentious. Pop into the Sunshine Volvo showroom at 179 Nerang Road, Southport. Phone 07 5509 7100 or visit sunshine volvo.com.au gcm

The new EP Dark Storm was released this October and almost instantly hit number one on iTunes; how did you guys feel seeing such a positive response? We were all pretty blown away, didn’t expect that at all, especially because it is just an EP. It was a bit stressful leading up to the recording period so it was great to get that recognition. When can we expect the debut album? We have just started writing for that, but we haven’t gotten far. We are planning to record maybe middle of next year. The four of you met at university, how did the band come about? Hayley and Sam were doing art degrees, I was doing music and Nik was doing science. I think Hayley came across Sam at uni because he grew up in Byron as well, but we didn’t really know him then. Nik used to make coffee for Sam at the uni cafe. Three-quarters of the band are from Byron Bay, what was it like growing up in a town renowned for its hardcore music scene? Well I was not into hardcore at that time. I definitely appreciate it, but I think Hayley kind of went through a stage of really loving it. We were surrounded by people who loved it, but we kind of did our own thing. Now with three EPs under the belt, what is the creative process like compared to when the band first started? It sounds weird, but when we first started writing I thought that a song came out of nowhere and it was this miracle thing you couldn’t push.

Before we went into record our recent EP we had to push ourselves to keep writing through those last few weeks because we weren’t ready. That really taught us a lot about what we could achieve in such a short amount of time. We are getting better at that now.The Jezabels are regularly described as a predominantly live band, why do you think that is? In the beginning none of us really knew anything about sound engineering or studio stuff. We wanted to sound organic and nothing too artificial. The band and our producer, Lachlan Mitchell, decided to create a really big live sound and that kind of stuck, but obviously we all love playing live as well. You occasionally perform outside of The Jezabels as a trained classical pianist, is this something you continue for fun? I was thinking it would be a really serious thing that I do for the rest of my life, but the band sort of came up and took over. It’s a lonely life being a piano player. I am enjoying the other side of the spectrum. I try to keep it up on the side when I have time and hopefully one day I will go back to it. What’s the best piece of advice you have been given? Noone has said it directly, but just the support we have received from being independent, especially from our manager, who is a great man. In an ideal world it would be awesome to be independent for ever but I’m not sure what is going to happen in the future. gcm

The Gold Coast is famous for fun and this summer I encourage locals to take advantage of everything on offer in our amazing city. Our fun-filled theme parks will unveil their holiday programs while on the events scene there’s anticipation surrounding a lively, non-stop program that takes us through the entire season. Not only do events provide a great social and recreational opportunity for locals, they also provide major economic benefit for the city. It’ll be a who’s who of international kite surfing when Main Beach hosts The PKRA Kite Surfing World Tour, and there’s the second instalment of Sail Paradise Gold Coast being coordinated by the Southport Yacht Club. The major mainstays of the Gold Coast events calendar will give visitors more reason to make a post Christmas visit with music festivals creating a real party atmosphere. On the sporting stage the Gold Coast is proving itself a year-round destination. The Breaka Burleigh Pro will shadow the ASP World Tour events, the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro surfing tournaments, while the BMW Magic Millions and ANZ Ladies Masters golf tournament rounds out the summer-time festivities. To all Gold Coasters I wish you a safe and happy Christmas and an exciting New Year.

Australia is in a constant demand for blood donations however over the Christmas season that need becomes paramount, and blood banks can sometimes be forgotten. As it is, Australia does not have enough and is low of type O and type A blood. To continue helping people across Australia battle against cancer, heart, stomach and bowel disease, accident or trauma or complications in pregnancy and childbirth the Australian Red Cross need 26,800 donations a week. Make an appointment today at the Donor Centres located in Robina and Southport or at the Donor Mobil Unit today. donateblood.com.au

While the Gold Coast is recovering well from the effects of the global financial crisis, the reality is that some industry sectors such as building and construction continue to struggle. I have made no secret that I believe a second round of economic stimulus projects is vital to helping local businesses and ensure our city is well-prepared for future growth.

Recently, Council endorsed an additional $8.5 million for a range of local construction projects. These include roads projects, the Robina Space project and redevelopment of Cavill Mall at Surfers Paradise. With the bulk of the public works projects currently under way across the city due to wrap up in within the next couple of years, these new projects are designed to ensure a continuity of city-building projects for the local construction industry.

As divisional councillor, I am particularly pleased with the inclusion of the Cavill Mall upgrade. This will not only give our city’s central tourist hub a much-needed facelift, it will also complement the wonderful rejuvenation of Surfers Paradise foreshore now under way. Another long-term project that will deliver a significant boost for the construction industry is the new Evandale Cultural and Civic Precinct, which was also formally endorsed by Council this month.

Along with tourism, the building and construction industry is our city’s biggest employer and this Council needs to continue to support these sectors to help ensure there are jobs for Gold Coasters into the future.

Christmas allows most of us to spend valuable time with family and friends. It is important to spare a thought for those who will not be with their families this Christmas. This year thousands of Australian troops will be serving away from home during the holiday season. I have just arrived back from Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan where 1550 Australian troops are currently serving. To show your support of the troops this Christmas you can send them a care package free through Australia Post. Australia Post allows free delivery for packages under two kilograms to our soldiers on the front line.

When sending your parcel don’t forget to include a letter to the troops, and by including a stamped self-addressed envelope so they can send a letter back to you. Parcels can be sent to An Australian Soldier or An Australian Soldier – Female. For something different you can send a care package to one of the explosive-detection dogs at An Australian EDD Handler. All parcels should be sent to: [Recipient’s Name], Op Slipper, AFPO13, Australian Defence Force, Sydney, NSW 2890.

Locally there are dozens of organisations such as Lifeline, St Vincent de Paul Society, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels who all offer an invaluable service to the community. These organisations and many more are always looking for a spare pair of hands and can be contacted though Volunteering Gold Coast on 07 5526 2811.

As this is my first column let me start by introducing myself. I’m the newly elected Federal Member of Parliament representing the electorate of McPherson. I’m a qualified mechanical engineer and have also worked as an industrial relations advocate in the metals and engineering industries and in health and community services.I’m passionate about support for veterans so I would encourage any veterans with issues with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to call my office and we’ll try to help. As a Federal Member, I can also assist with taxation issues, problems with Centrelink, immigration issues, dealing with the Child Support Agency, and many other agencies of the Federal Government.I intend to advocate for change at a Federal level that will help our local communities, but I can only do this with input from local people. The most prominent issue raised with me during the campaign was the lack of transport infrastructure on the southern-end of our city and I intend to push for better roads and better public transport in our area.I’m looking forward to serving the local southern Gold Coast community in the Federal Parliament and would encourage you to contact my office if I can help support you or your family through the facilities available to me as a Member of Parliament. adopt a petMeet Farmer and new wife, Amber. Farmer is a 17-month German Shepherd cross Bull Arab who was surrendered due to chasing livestock and wildlife. Upon arriving in our care he was very distressed. After being placed in Amber’s pen they were both so much happier. Amber is a three and a half year old mix of Staffy, German Shepherd and Bull Arab. Although it is not compulsory that they be rehomed together, it would be nice if they could be together for ever. Both dogs are much more settled since they met – Farmer no longer tries to escape and Amber’s appetite has improved greatly. The pair have beautiful natures and love cuddles; both lived with older children and are sociable with other dogs so they’d make wonderful family companions. If you are interested in our beautiful couple, or either dog separately, you would need a yard with a 6ft timber or Colourbond fence to keep them secure. Both are $170 and come desexed, vaccinated, micro chipped and wormed. If you are interested in Farmer and Amber contact the AWL on 5509 9000 or visit www.awlqld.com.au

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 – Dec 21You can work hard now to further your own interests ‘freedom archers’. Not that you’re a shy wall-flower, but you’ll find a greater ability to assert yourself now. Show the world what you can really do – you’ve got what it takes to make a great impression! Working independently or where competition is the agenda works best for you during the next couple of months.

CAPRICORN Dec 22 – JaN 20While you’re making in-roads with your career ‘masterful sea-goats’ spend some time getting acquainted with like-minded social circles. Connecting with colleagues and acquaintances can give you the inside information that will help you get ahead. Charm will get you everywhere now. Take advantage of the slower times in December to reflect on your actions and prepare for new pursuits in 2011.

AQUARIUS JaN 21 – Feb 19When it comes to career put your observation goggles on ‘water-bearers’. Like a detective you can see the underlying mechanics of what’s going on before you and manoeuvre yourself into strategic positions. With your ear to the ground make the most of this time to find the clearest path to realise your goals. Connecting with powerful people and winning them to your cause should be easy now.

PISCES Feb 20 – Mar 20If you can plan to get away for a holiday ‘dreamy dual fish’ – do it! The travel bug has arrived, so whether for pleasure or work get on a plane and travel abroad. It’s all about expanding your awareness and opening your eyes to a new way of being. To optimise the experience, entice a loved one to join you and enjoy paradise together.

ARIES Mar 21 – apr 20The next couple of months can be integral in getting yourself ahead. Your ruler, warrior Mars, is keen to be adventurous and take action. Travelling abroad or expanding your knowledge base through courses will keep boredom at bay. It will also put you in good stead for opportunities to get yourself ahead in 2011.

TAURUS apr 21 – May 20The evaluation of your relationships is not yet over. Things are not always as they seem when you look underneath the surface. This period will help reveal who you can and can’t trust. Who walks the same moral code as you and whose ethics clash with yours. Look at this as an opportunity to draw the skeletons out of the closet and bring the truth to the surface. This way you’ll have the facts to base your decisions on.

GEMINI May 21 – JuN 21For the last little while the daily grind has required you to look further than brushing across the surface of things. Never fear, only another week and you can get back to your preferred style. The next couple of months will prove a great time for connecting, communicating and networking – particularly with your partner and business associates. Getting the other side of the story now will be easy and to your advantage.

CANCER JuN 22 – Jul 23If you’ve been taking life too seriously it’s time to take a breather. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “How can I bring fun into my life?” November provides a magical month for reconnecting with your creative juices and rediscovering what makes you passionate. Take on projects that make your heart sing and life will begin to feel lighter again.

LEO Jul 24 – aug 23You’ll need to balance the demands at home with your personal wants. Be flexible and ride with the current to keep things running smoothly. You’ll be busy, but you can achieve a lot when it comes to fulfilling your desires over the next couple of months. Get active, be athletic, start exercise regimes or just get lusty in the bedroom to burn off all that excess energy!

VIRGO aug 24 – Sep 23The first week of November can bring a flurry of activity with siblings, friends and neighbours. It’s like you’re on speed dial and everyone wants your ear. Soon enough though your brain can shift off hyper-drive and turn its focus to family and home matters. Don’t hold off any longer speaking your mind. The following weeks will provide ample opportunity to express your true thoughts and get the family on board.

LIBRA Sep 24 – oct 23Your finances require your attention. It would be a good idea to go over your budget with a fine toothcomb. Review bank and loan statements for errors and make sure everything is in order. It may well be a good time to gain the support of others’ resources, including bank loans after the 17 November. If you’re signing contracts do so before 10 December or wait until after the 30th.

gcm STARS

All eyes are on you, Scorpio. You are radiating charisma and are mesmerising to all around you. Like a snake charmer beguiles a boa constrictor, you too can ‘charm the pants off ’anyone now. Like an opiate your desires can drive you to possessiveness – claiming your prize at all costs. While you’re so irresistible, tame your impulses and play to win where everyone benefits.
