goggles - build a bot
DESCRIPTION
Goggles is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) initiative by Beyond Education. Build a Bot is a course offered by Beyond Education. For more information see ( http://www.beyonded.org/?page_id=56 )TRANSCRIPT
We all wish kindergarten never ended. Why? It was so much fun! However, many of us have been brainwashed that education is a rigid learning and disciplined process; rather than a fun filled adventurous process.
According to researchers, kindergarten is the most effective period of learning. How can we make the kindergarten model continue? Step into the world with Beyond Education …
of design & technology which will dominate the future of business and experience the full design process of:
•Researching
•Sketching
•Building
•Programming
•Problem solving
Step into the world …
What is Build a Bot?
A program exposing students to Science, Technology, Team Work, Design, Computer Programming and Engineering
Build a Bot
We create a fun environment that teaches STEM skills and excites students for the real world possibilities in Science and Technology fields
Course Structure
The course runs for 8 months, 2 hours per session, once a week with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 9 students per class.
The program focuses on compact teaching periods (20-30min) with extended hands on periods (1h30) assisted by close teacher support. This fosters a self-empowering approach to learning, while not allowing struggle and frustration to set in.
What are the Results?
STEM skills that have traditionally been taught in a theoretical setting are now taught using real world examples and problems.
It fast tracks students who have an interest in STEM fields; encourages and empowers those who have a fear of STEM.
Students are eager to solve the exciting challenges presented but are forced to learn the skills they need in a non threatening environment.
Other programs?
Beyond Education also helps disadvantaged schools prepare for the First Lego League (FLL).
FLL is an international robotics program for 9 to 16 year olds, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills. A theme is provided each year by FLL and teams prepare for a provincial competition in November. Successful provincial teams are chosen to compete at a national competition in Gauteng.

University science departments face various challenges, but most agree that the lack of adequate entry-level skills in maths and science is one of the most serious issues: “No level of South African education, from kindergarten to post-doctoral studies, can yet be called a scientific success”
