INTRODUCTION

The Goethe Management Program provides cutting-edge business and leadership skills in a compact format, specifically designed for executive development in small and medium sized companies (Mittelstand). The program aims at experienced managers, specialists and high potentials, who want to boost their career by acquiring, refreshing or deepening their management and leadership knowledge, directly applicable to real workplace situations. Besides management and leadership essentials, key challenges of the future economic and technological landscape for companies in the global marketplace are addressed, such as the impact of digitalization on markets as well as on the companies’ value chain and best practice examples of how to deploy newly available data in times of digitalization.

CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM

The Goethe Management Program is composed of six modules of 2,5 days each. In total, the program comprises 15 days of lectures delivered in 3x1-week residencies with 2 month working phases in between. The modules present both fundamental management principles and the most recent findings from academia, and at the same time discuss real-world situations using the example of participants’ experiences in their own business environments. This interactive learning approach as well as intensive group work enhance participants’ critical thinking, decision making, and teamwork skills. The entire program is welded together by a real-life capstone case study in which teams of program participants address specific topical challenges resulting in key proposals for top management. Results are presented to a group of senior managers from the participants’ companies in a final workshop at the end of week 3.

This module will familiarize participants with state-of-the-art concepts of strategic management and organizational devel-opment. Starting from the idea of a dynamic environment with its permanent repercussions on firm strategy and orga-nizational structure, the module provides participants with a strategic toolkit to understand and address these challenges. It will allow participants to better identify potential strategic moves and to select the most promising one. Furthermore, this module explores the dynamics of organizational structure and aims at providing participants with a set of instruments to understand the implications of organizational designs.

MODULE 1

To identify participants’ personal leadership potential and to unlock unused capabilities are the main objectives of this module. By determining individual value systems, specific attitudes, and unexplored resources, participants gain a clear understanding of their individual role as a leader. They get in touch with action fields and growth opportunities and get to know what parameters they can change or transform. In addi-tion, they learn how to shift their view in the light of upcoming challenges by unlocking their self-regulation capacities and using their impulses, thoughts and feelings in order to reach their full potential. By the end of the module, participants will have re-shaped their understanding of their leadership role and are able to continue the initiated development process.

MODULE 2

This module illustrates how game theory, data analysis and in particular the combination of both facilitate strategic decision- making. It consists of a mixture of presentations, business simulations and classroom experiments. As a starting point, the key concepts of strategic interaction and decision-making will be interactively developed. Participants will learn to iden-tify strategic situations in their own daily business environment and to detect strategic similarities across seemingly unrelated settings. Furthermore, the module provides participants with the empirical tools required to approach business problems with proper data analysis, forming the basis for data based decision-making. This includes ways how to find the “right” data to analyze the question at hand as well as an under- standing of the difference between correlation and causality. Participants learn how a changing data environment causes substantial change to many businesses and how to make use of these developments to gain a competitive edge.

The aim of this module is to provide a thorough introduction in the universe of finance. Participants receive state-of-the-art insights in the main topics of financial management and financial accounting. They will learn how to apply these concepts and will get to know relevant problem-solving tools applicable to their business environment. This module will enable especially non-financial managers to cope with the main financial management and accounting aspects of their decision-making processes as well as gain thorough insights in the world of modern finance. Basic concepts as well as exciting new aspects of modern finance will be covered thereby also providing a better understanding of modern capital markets and their dynamics.

This module focuses on understanding and managing orga-nizations engaged in creation, invention, and innovation, and on diagnosing potential innovation failures before they can occur. Participants learn how firms manage the challenges in designing and implementing innovation systems. Particular attention is given to the conditions under which innovation processes succeed and fail, and to examine organizations that excel at identifying, building, and commercializing innovations. The purpose of this module is to provide participants with frameworks allowing them to effectively design and manage firm innovation strategy. In doing so, the module caters for a broad range of challenges in which corporate growth through the development of new products and services is fundamental.

This module focuses on how information technology affects market structure as well as organizations. Especially small and medium sized companies (Mittelstand) will undergo massive, disruptive changes in their business models due to the enormous advances in technology in the years to come. Participants will learn how to use newly emerged data gathered both within and outside their own organiza-tion. By doing so, participants will not only learn techniques necessary for analyzing this new type of data, but also and even more importantly identify, how competitors facing the same challenges deal with these transformations. Finally, the module offers guidelines on understanding and developing corporate strategies in digital environments.

An elaborate series of program complements of various formats scheduled during residencies initiate a deeper understanding of the contents covered throughout the lectures. Round table discussions with company representatives, live-cases and impulse speeches presented by leading experts deepen the practical relevance of the content taught and ensure that learnings are reflected in a strategic context.

The program is embedded in a capstone case study, which continuously takes new topics dealt with throughout the program into account. It also addresses relevant business situations from participants’ day-to-day work. Working in cross-company teams on the case study will foster the dialogue among participants and initiate discussions taking into account the multitude of professional functional and industrial experiences.

Participants will have vast oppor-tunity for networking and learning from the experience of their peers during case work and extracur- ricular activities. Graduates join a strong alumni community and stay connected beyond the end of the program.

PROF. DR. ANDREJ GILLAndrej Gill holds the chair of Corporate Finance at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and a research associate at the Center for Excellence SAFE at Goethe University Frankfurt. He holds a doctoral degree from Goethe University Frankfurt.Prof. Gill gained broad expertise in advising companies, both in developing strategies with regardto strengthening their financial position and understanding as well as using information based on newly available data within and outside organizations. Prof. Gill has beenrepeatedly honored for his teaching. His main research focuses onCorporate Finance, Organizational Economics, and Behavioral Economics and Finance in the era of digitalization.

PROF. DR. FLORIAN HETTFlorian Hett holds the chair of Digital Economics at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and is a research associate of CLBO (Center for Leadership and Behavior in Organizations) at Goethe University Frankfurt. He holds a doctoral degree from the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. Prof. Dr. Hett gained vast experience in dealing with different kinds of organizational structures, such as public-private partnerships and financial startups. He has taught courses on a variety of topics ranging from Data Analysis to Management, but also Introductory Economics for Lawyers. His main research focuses on Applied Microeconomics, Behavioral Economics and Financial Economics.

DR. KAROLIEN NOTEBAERTKarolien Notebaert is a senior lecturer at the Goethe Business School and lecturer at Sankt Gallen Management Institute (Switzerland), where she contributes to the executive educational programs. She translates recent findings from neuroscience to leadership development through seminars and keynotes. Dr. Notebaert has a Master in Behavioral Neuroscience and Economics, and obtained a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience from the University Leuven (Belgium). Her area of expertise is cognitive performance and flexibility, with a focus on self-regulation. Dr. Notebaert uses her passion for neuroscience and expertise in this area to give powerful and inspirational insights.

PROF. DR. LARS SCHWEIZERLars Schweizer holds theUBS-Endowed Professorship for Strategic Management at Goethe University Frankfurt since 2007. Before, he was Associate Professor for Organizational Behavior and Management at Grenoble Graduate School of Business in France. Moreover, he is Academic Director of Goethe Business School’s Competence Cluster Strategic Management, the Master of Pharma Business Administration as well as the Master of Digital Transformation Management. Prof. Schweizer holds a doctoral degree from the University of Bamberg. His main research focuses are Mergers & Acquisitions, Strategic Management, Leadership, and Organizational Behavior as well as the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

DR. FABIAN URBANFabian Urban is Director of Executive Education and Academic Director of Goethe Business School’s Competence Cluster Leadership & Personal Development. Previously, he was responsible for the Executive Education department at Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt. Dr. Urban studied economics at the Universities of Hamburg and Freiburg and received his doctorate at the Department of Personnel and Organizational Economics at the University of Freiburg. He examines the role of emotions in the leadership context and the meaning of mindfulness in daily life. He is a systemic consultant and coach of the Milton Erickson Institute in Heidelberg and a lecturer at the Centre for Key Qualifications at the University of Freiburg.

PROF. DR. UWE WALZUwe Walz holds the Chair of Industrial Organization at Goethe University Frankfurt. He is a director of the Centre for Financial Studies as well as the Center for Excellence SAFE, a think tank focusing on the financial industry and markets. Prof. Walz is also Academic Director of Goethe Business School’s Master in Finance as well as a research fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute in Brussels. He has received numerous teaching awards including the Duke Goethe EMBA teaching award. His main research focuses on Venture Capital and Private Equity, the industrial economics of financial industries as well as of digitization.

JUN.-PROF. SIMONE WIES, PH.D.Simone Wies holds the Center for Excellence SAFE Junior Professorship for Marketing and Finance at Goethe University Frankfurt. Previously, she wasa post-doctoral researcher in Marketing at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in Finance from Maastricht University. She taught a variety of courses ranging from Strategic Marketing Management to Shareholder Value and Market Based Assets. Academically, Simone Wies focuses on how capital markets value marketing decisions and how these valuations influence strategic decisions undertaken by marketing executives. Her research investigates the investment character of firm- level marketing strategies with a particular focus on firm innovation assets.

The program is taught by leading faculty from Goethe University’s AASCB-accredited Faculty of Economics and Business Administration as well as by experts from selected cooperation partners. The program’s faculty is experienced in teaching diverse executive education formats and in making business concepts readily understandable and immediately applicable to daily business situations.

PROF. DR. TORSTEN WULFTorsten Wulf is holder of the chair for Strategic and International Management at the Philipps-University of Marburg. Prior to that, from 2007 until the beginning of 2012 he held the chair for Strategic Management and Organization as well as having the position as academic director of MBA-programs and the Center for Scenario Planning at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. After the PhD at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and the habilitation at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, he was professor of Strategy and International Management at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, School of International Management, in Paris. At GBS Prof. Wulf is Academic Director for the Competence Cluster Strategic Management.
