Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast as usual.
After the Feast was over, his parents left to go back home. The boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But they were not aware of it. They thought he was somewhere in their group. So they traveled on for a day.
Then they began to look for him among their relatives and friends. They did not find him. So they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courtyard. He was sitting with the teachers. He was listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at how much he understood. They also were amazed at his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were amazed. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been worried about you. We have been looking for you everywhere."
"Why were you looking for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he meant by that.
Then he went back to Nazareth with them, and he obeyed them. But his mother kept all these things like a secret treasure in her heart. Jesus became wiser and stronger. He also became more and more pleasing to God and to people.
Jesus liked going to church.
He liked learning about God, his father.

Group Activity Time provides an active learning experience to review lesson concepts.
What you need: nothing
What you do: Have the children stand around the classroom with space to move
around freely. Sing the song “If you’re happy and you know it…” with the children.
Suggestions for verses: hug your neighbor, shake hands and say “hello,” show me
a smile, show me 3 fingers, etc.
What you say: Today we learned about Jesus at the temple. He loved being at
church so much that he stayed for 3 days! Hearing the teachers talk about God, his
Father, made Jesus happy. Do you like being at church? What can we learn about
at church?
What you need: box filled with little objects in sets of 3 (ie: 3 jacks, 3 hearts, 3
smiley faces, 3 crosses, 3 clothespins, etc.)
What you do: Have the children sit in a circle. Pass the box to the first child. Let
him find a set of three matching objects and show them to the class. He will then
pass the box to the next child, who will search for the next set of three matching
objects. Continue around the circle.
What you say: Today we learned about Jesus at the temple. He loved being at
church so much that he stayed for 3 days! Do you like being at church? What can
we learn about at church?
What you need: nothing
What you do: Have the children make a line. Play “Follow the Leader” with one
exception – each action must be repeated 3 times before beginning a new action.
For example, 3 hops, 3 jumping jacks, 3 spins, etc. Change the “leader” periodically
to allow different children a turn to lead.
What you say: Today we learned about Jesus at the temple. He loved being at
church so much that he stayed for 3 days! When we played “follow the leader” we
did everything in threes too. Do you like being at church? What can we learn about
at church?
