This time of uncertainty in our nation reminds me of 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If My

people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek

My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and

will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

If you were able to watch the leadership video on fasting this last week

you will remember me reading this exact verse. We are in a time when it is ob-

vious we need healing. But when we think of healing during a time like this we

usually think of physical healing. And although it is needed in a time such as

this, we also need to focus, and arguably more so, on our spiritual healing. As

the nation turns to God in a time like this, it reminds me of 9/11. How encour-

aging it was to see people turning back to God because of the uncertainty and

fear. Unfortunately, it did not last very long and God was again forgotten.

There are two types of fear…terror, and the fear of God which correlates

to a healthy respect and reverence. I am reminded of Matthew 10:28 where Je-

sus warns his apostles that difficult times are coming, but He says, “And do not

fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who

is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Brothers and sisters, now is a time to fear. Not the virus nor the econo-

my, but God Himself. We need to humble ourselves and trust in God. Read and

take to heart this passage, Phil. 4:6-7. “Be anxious for nothing, but in every-

thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be

made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understand-

ing, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Fasting and prayer is a way of sincerely humbling ourselves before

God. I encourage each of you to access, through our website, Brother Ray’s

lesson on fasting and prayer given at the beginning of March. You also have

another opportunity to hear lessons on fasting and prayer from our own minis-

ters on April 19th. Please take advantage of these valuable opportunities. I am

reminded of Ray’s recent quote, “Fasting didn’t fall out of the Bible, it just fell

out of practice.”

The Shepherds of the church at Garriott Road encourage each of you

to join us for a time of fasting and prayer beginning today, Sunday, April 19 th.

We are planning a 24 hour period for ourselves and invite you to join us. Please

use your wisdom and good judgment if extenuating circumstances prevent you

from fasting right now; if that is the case, please join us for a day of prayer. It

truly is a personal decision, so if you cannot join us for 24 hours, maybe 12

hours would be right for you or even a meal or two. Let’s humble ourselves as

God’s people and lead the way back God. Let us be anxious for nothing, thank-

ful for everything and let the peace of God guard our hearts and minds as we

beseech Him to forgive our sins and heal our land. May God bless us all as we

honor Him. -- Doug Boyle

“GODLY LIVING IN A GODLESS

WORLD: TRUTH”

Introduction:

A. A study in U.S. News and World Report

about morality in the United States

showed that far more Americans than

ever admit that they lie regularly. We

don’t mind lying, but we don’t want to

be called liars. It’s an interesting para-

dox.

B. One in four adults believes he has to lie

and cheat to get ahead (U.S. News and

World Report, Nov. 22, 1999, p. 62). The

cover story was titled “Cheating, Writing

and Arithmetic.”

C. Dr. Prentice Meador, in “Promises to

Keep,” says:

1. 36% of all Americans say lying is

sometimes necessary.

2. 71% of us expect lying and

cheating to increase.

3. Overall, 1 in 3 of all students say

they would lie on their resume’ or

job application.

D. We live in a culture that has trouble tell-

ing the truth.

I. The effects of a godless world on us.

A. We call in sick for work when we really

just want the day off.

B. The Christian salesman skirts around the

truth in order to sell his product.

C. We tell each other, “I’ll pray for you,”

when we have no intentions of doing so.

D. A self-employed person doesn’t report

all of his earnings.

II. Jesus was big on the truth.

A. Jesus condemned creative dishonesty

(Matt. 5:33-37).

B. Jesus rebuked the hypocrisy of the

Scribes and Pharisees (Matt. 23:1-39).

C. Jesus came into the world to bear wit-

ness of the truth (John 18:37).

D. Jesus proclaimed that it is the truth

that will set men free (John 8:32).

E. Jesus said that true worship involved

the truth (John 4:24).

F. Jesus sent the Spirit of truth into the

world (John 16:13).

G. Jesus said that He is the Way, the

TRUTH, and the Life (John 14:6).

III. The tongue of God and the Devil

A. Lying is the native tongue of the devil

(John 8:44).

1. Every lie has its origin in Satan.

2. The Liar will do everything possible

to get you to lie.

B. Truth is the native tongue of God (John

14:6; Tit. 1:2).

1. All truth originates with God.

2. God is the source of all truth.
