Godly Ideas

In 1890, William Booth who is the founder of the Salvation Army, published a bookcalled "In Darkest England and The Way Out" which still has relevance today. He wroteof meeting physical needs in order to also meet the spiritual ones. "What is the use," hesaid, "of preaching the gospel to men whose whole attention is concentrated upon a mad,desperate struggle to keep themselves alive? You might as well as give a tract to ashipwrecked sailor who is battling the surf that has drowned his comrades and threatensto drown him. He will not listen to you. Nay, he cannot hear you any more than a manwhose head is under water can listen to a sermon. The first thing to do is to get him atleast a footing on firm ground, and give him room to live." Booth was one of the firstmen to see that salvation is total, both of the body and soul. This fulfills Matthew 25:35and James 1:27 simultaneously. In a real life situations that I have encountered, thisprinciple is a tried and true practice.

Now here are some Godly ideas that you might be able to apply to your life. They areclosely aligned to the description of the early Christians by Pliny. He wrote of them."They were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively ahymn to Christ as to a God, and to bind themselves by oath, not to some crime, but not tocommit fraud, theft, or adultery, not falsify their trust, nor to refuse to return a trust whencalled upon to do so. When this was over, it was their custom to depart and to assembleagain to partake of food--but ordinary and innocent food." This narrative is nearly equalto that of the Apostles found in Acts 2:42-47.

Now William Booth also wrote of personal principles or resolutions that he applied to hislife. One must always remember that while I may disagree with Booth's practice not tobaptize in the name of Jesus or even at all, one may partake of his ideas that are based onthe Bible or Scriptural text. On December 6, 1849 he drew up a series of resolutions. Iquote them now.

"I do promise," he wrote, "my God helping: Firstly, that I will rise every morningsufficiently early to wash, dress, and have a few minutes not less than five, in privateprayer. Secondly, that I will, as much as possible, avoid all babbling and idle talk inwhich I have lately so sinfully indulged. Thirdly, that I will endeavour in my conductbefore the world and my fellow servants especially to conduct myself as humble, meekand zealous follower of the lamb, and by serious conversation and warning, endeavour tolead them to think of their immortal souls. Fourthly, that I will not read less than fourchapters in God's word daily. Fifthly, that I strive to live closer to God, and to seek afterholiness of heart, and leave providential events with God. Sixthly, that I will read thisover every day or at least twice a week. God help me, enable me to cultivate a spirit ofself-denial and to yield myself a prisoner of love to the Redeemer of the world."

I have put some of Booth's ideas into my own version. He wrote on personal dedication,

that we should begin the day with God. This agrees with Scripture. "But seek ye first thekingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Hesaid to avoid gossip, as people always seem to prefer to pass on something bad instead ofsomething good about others. The Bible has this warning. "Having damnation, becausethey have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from

house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things whichthey ought not" 1 Timothy 5:12-13. Become a witness and a missionary for Christ, saidBooth. It has been said, "The greatest handicap that the Church has is unsatisfactory livesof professing Christians." The present lukewarm Laodicean Church looks so much likethe world today, that one cannot tell them apart. We must try to live as lights of theworld, and touch not the unclean things. Paul placed this in the book of Romans. "Ibeseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies aliving sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." I Peter1:15 says, "Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."

Booth also wrote that we should study the word of God. No traveller sets out on a journeywithout a clear direction. The Bible is a perfect guide-book for our lives. 2 Timothy 2:15reads, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to beashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Booth's next resolution involves two things:

A. Keep growing. The New Testament word for sanctification is hagiamos. All Greeknouns which end in -asmos describe a process; and sanctification is the road to holiness."But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him beglory both now and for ever. Amen" 2 Peter 3:18.

B. Do not worry. We have to leave the providential ordering of things to God. ThePsalmist wrote, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee (you)." In any event, God willsupply all your needs and you strength to deal with any situation.

Finally, we must all serve God daily. We should search the word of God everyday."Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts ofmy doors" Proverbs 8:34. The Lord's Prayer mentions that we must pray to him daily tofulfill our needs. "Give us this day our daily bread," Matthew 6:11. And we are to put onGod's Divinely protective armor daily. "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour ofGod, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand"Ephesians 6:13.
