The day following the first annual NativeAmerican Student Leadership Conference,ten North Star students met after school fortheir first Native American Caucus of the2004-2005 school year. Counselor, VirginiaSaporta and Social Studies teacher, LarryWright (Ponca) have been sponsors for NorthStar’s Caucus for years. The students metto discuss planning events and fundraisersto communicate, build relationships, andlearn more about their unique cultures. Sincethen, the students have collaborated to learnmore about Native American filmmakers,actors and actresses by watching moviesthat depict the Native culture in an honestlight. They also plan to bring their familiestogether for a night of pizza, conversation,and stories unique to their different tribes.Larry Wright is organizing a school assemblyat North Star to honor American IndianHeritage Month on November 11th (see storyon page 2).

Caucuses are an opportunity for studentsto build community and awareness withintheir schools. They create a comfortableatmoshere where students can discuss issuesrelated to culture, identity and individuality.Caucuses are also a place where students can meet with faculty who will have theresources necessary to positively guide each student through the public school system.

Social Studies teacher, Mary Dickenson is one of the sponsors of Lincoln High’s NativeAmerican Caucus. Lincoln High has a very active caucus that meets during the lunchhour and before school to discuss Native, school and personal issues. All students whoparticipate plan activites that advocate for their cultures and the building of a strongerNative community. Lincoln high and North Star has the highest attendance of Nativestudents who paticipate in caucus.

Candy Beach, teacher at Northeast, is planning and creating the first Native Americancaucus to exist at that school since club day was cancelled a few years ago. Studentsare excited to meet for the first time this month.

Park Middle School held their first 2004-2005 caucus on November 4th after school.Nissa Sturgeon is Park’s art teacher and sponsor. Every year Park’s caucus makes anddelivers gift bags full of goodies to the senior citizens living in the senior housing ownedby the Lincoln Indian Center. Lincoln High’s caucus has collaborated with Park on thisproject in the past. The caucus hopes to work with them again this year.

Dawes and Culler are two schools participating in Native American Club Day sponsoredby Indian Education. Two counsleors at Dawes and one counselor at Culler help sponsorthe event once a month. In October, Mark Awakuni-Swetland, Omaha languageprofessorat UNL and adopted member of the Omaha tribe, met with the students totalk about the Omaha language and identity. This month the students will cook NativeAmerican foods!

 According to the last decennialcensus taken on April 1, 2000,there were 383,000 militaryveterans who identifiedthemselves as American Indianand Alaska Native.

As of April 1, 2000, 381,000U.S. residents spoke a nativeNorth American language. Ofthese languages, the mostcommonly spoken was Navajo,with 178,014 speakers.   Fourteen percent of AmericanIndians and Alaska natives age25 and over had earned at leasta bachelor’s degree as ofJanuary 1, 2003.

Between 2002 and 2003,median income for AmericanIndian and Alaska nativehouseholds rose 4 percent, orabout $1,400 a year. An estimated 4.4 millionAmerican Indians and Alaskanatives lived in the United Statesas of July 1, 2003. They madeup 1.5 percent of the nation'stotal population. An estimated 306,000 AmericanIndians and Alaska natives wereage 65 and over in 2003. Thisage group comprised 7 percentof the American Indian andAlaska native population.   More than 4,000 AmericanIndians and Alaska natives werefarmers and ranchers in 2000.

Reprinted from Indian CountryCOEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Rebekah Adolph is a young Colvillewoman; attractive, quiet, unassertive, but you can senseher resolve when she talks of her future, ''I want to be anattorney.'' She leaves no doubt in the way she expressesthose words. That resolve also showed through in her past.She left home at 14 to attend a prep school even thoughher mother was against it. Adolph was already looking toher future. ''Ithought I neededto go to college.My brothers havea year of collegeeducation butthey're hardworkers and canfind jobs, butbeing a girl, aNative Americangirl, it was goingto be a lot harderto find a job. Ifigured I neededa degree, nomatter what itwas, so I went toNative AmericanPrep for twoyears.''

Adolph was born on the Colville Reservation in Washingtonto parents who are full Colville. They later moved to St.Ignatius, Mont. on the Flathead Reservation. It was hereshe decided to attend Native American Prep School inRowe, N.M. Two years prepared her for college but costher some knowledge of her tribal heritage and forced herto grow up by herself. Even so, she took the opportunityto learn more of the traditions and knowledge of the tribesof New Mexico.

She made many college visits including Stanford and severalIvy League schools but costs were too high. She enrolledat North Idaho College because it was less expensive andprovided the basics. The school doesn't charge out-of-statetuition to Indian students from northern Plateau tribes andAdolph was the first to enroll under this opportunity. ''Thiswas our land, our hunting and gathering location.

Administrators recognized that and granted the tuitionwaiver,'' she said. Now in her third year of college andenrolled at Lewis & Clark State, she's majoring in criminaljustice with plans to attend law school in a few more years.

Adapting to a different culture when she started collegewas relatively easy but there were some minor problems.She tells of one such instance. ''The way I was taught, thetraditional way, when you're talking to somebody orsomebody's talking to you and you want to show them thegreatest respect is to not make direct eye contact exceptvery briefly. I went to class and am taking notes, writingas fast as I can. The instructor is calling for my attentionand I said 'I'm sorry sir, but I'm writing notes.' He thoughtnot looking at him was an issue and had the impression Iwas just drawing pictures. He contacted my advisor aboutwhat I was doing and why I wasn't looking at him.''

Not many Colvilles still speak their Native language andthe loss of the language is a concern to Adolph. She isn'tfluent and wishes she were but she does understand thelanguage. She talks of a school in Montana targeted atkindergarten through sixth graders where no English isspoken in an attempt to preserve the language and culture.She's trying to do that too, ''but also trying to learn thewhite ways. I use both.''

Adolph finds time to do both beadwork and quillwork andis hoping to learn basketmaking from her mother. Herbeading is exquisite with small beads and intricate patterns.It's an unusual pastime for an attorney but she said, ''Itteaches you to think things through about your decisionsand choices that you make.''

After law school she wants to go back to Indian country.''Any reservation, whether it's my own or anywhere elsein the country to work for a tribe.'' Juvenile law may beher specialty. ''Children don't really know their rights andthey're often abused in the courts. We have juveniledetention centers for a reason, now use them,'' shecommented.

Adolph is balanced between two cultures and able to livein either but there's no doubt where her heart lies. Herparents left it up to her to choose between her mother'sCatholicism and her father's traditional religion. She chosetraditional.

The purpose of this program is to celebrateAmerican Indian Month and Veterans Daywith the students and staff of North Star HighSchool. We want to acknowledge theAmerican Indian students enrolled at NorthStar, the Veterans on staff and anyone whois currently in the armed services. 

In celebrating American Indian Month we wantto get across to students and staff that Indiansare alive and thriving in this country today.We will talk about education, political, social,

economic issues as they relate to Indians aswell as tribal sovereignty.

We will be demonstrating the different dancestyles associated with the modern day Pow-Wow. In doing so we will also relate how thesedance styles relate to Nebraska history. Wewill show the importance of what Veteransmean to Indian people and how we celebratethem and how we celebrate and revere allveterans. We will have an honor song sungfor the veterans and explain the meaning of it.

The society will also get the students andstaff involved in the dancing. We will talkabout and show how everyone can getinvolved in a Pow-Wow. We hope that withwhat they learn here will make going to Pow-Wows in the future a more enjoyable experienceand one that they can participate in. 

This event will be take place November 11that 8:45amat North Star High School. LarryWright iis a member of the Ponca Heduska(Warrior) Society.
