God Longs For Her

• Matt. 23:37-38, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together , as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”

The Adulterous Wife

• Ezek. 16:32+60, “You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! Every prostitute receives a fee, but you give gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for you illicit favors.. Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.”

The Distressed Bride

• Isa. 54:5-8, “For your Maker is your husband-the Lord Almighty is his name- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit- a wife who married young, only to be rejected…For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.”

The Barren Woman

• Gal. 4:24-25 as a comparison of Sarah and Hagar: “for the women represents two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.”

• Ps. 9:19, “O Lord, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare your praises in the gates of the Daughter of Zion.”
