Term 1 Week 3
God our Creator, in your wisdom and love, you surround us with the mysteries of the
universe. Send your spirit upon our students and fill them with your wisdom and
blessings. Grant that they may embrace the opportunities they have been given to
learn and grow, and draw them closer to you, the source of all knowledge.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
Thank you to the many family members who came along to our ‘Beginning of School
Year Mass’ on Monday. It was wonderful to have so many join us to celebrate the
2020 school year, and to welcome our new staff and students to Holy Rosary. We
recognise the efforts of all who contributed to this beautiful celebration. Well done to
our senior students who led our drama; a powerful reminder that when we develop
quality relationships and show integrity, resilience, kindness and respect we are
living the ‘Holy Rosary Way’ as modelled by Jesus, and lived by the Mercy Sisters
who started our school. We thank Sonya for her huge efforts and commitment to
providing a beautiful Opening Mass.
At Mass, we also referenced Catherine McAuley’s quote that is on the wall near Prep
and Year 1/2. I’m sure many of us have walked past without noticing the quote too
closely. We encourage you to share the quote with your children and discuss the
relevance of Catherine’s words for us today.
Holy Rosary School is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection of
all children in our care.

Congratulations
Warm congratulations and best wishes for a happy future together to Jenna (3/4J)
and Gianni on their engagement.
Growing in Independence
We know that helping our children grow in independence contributes to their
confidence, sense of importance and belonging. Each day as our children grow and
change they become increasingly competent and capable. In our classrooms,
teachers are working to further enhance these skills by gradually increasing student
responsibilities. Our Prep teachers continue to encourage children to be more
responsible with drink bottles, lunch boxes, library bags, putting things away and
tidying up.
Sometimes, as a parent it can be challenging to know when our children should be
able to manage their belongings. As a general rule, Prep children can carry and
unpack their own bag, and teachers will guide them in choosing their readers. By
Year 1 they should usually be confident enough to walk into school independently,
unpack their bags, select readers and organise their own belongings.
Hallways
We have become aware that some children are coming to schoolbefore 8:45am,
often accessing classrooms via the foyer where OSHC is taking place. For safety
reasons, no students should be in the building before 8:45am. We remind parents
that staff are only available for a brief conversation before or after school, and that
more lengthy conversations require an appointment. It is our expectation that all staff
are engaged in teaching from 8:50am.
Prep Information Evening
Just a reminder that next week we are hosting our Prep information evening in the
classrooms at 6:00pm. This event is for parents only.
District Swimming
Last Friday, several students participated in time trials at Kensington pool. These
students represented Holy Rosary in such a positive manner; swimming well, giving
their swims a ‘red hot go’ and encouraging each other. We wish them success and
an enjoyable meet at the District Swimming Carnival at Queens Park on Friday 21st.
Have a great week,
Chris, Maria, Sonya and Ant.

PE News
Welcome back to 2020! It has already been a busy start to what will be an action
packed term in the area of Physical Education.
Last Friday, 23 eager students participated in our District Swimming trials at
Kensington pool. This was in preparation for our District Swimming sports, which will
be held at Queens Park Outdoor pool on Friday February 21st. Thanks to Ruth for
assisting with the trials, to the students for showing resilience and determination, and
the parents for preparing them for the trials.
On the same day, we were lucky enough to have Rhett and Darcy from Western
United, the newest franchise club in the A League, to run soccer clinics for all the
Year 5/6 students. The students really enjoyed these and Rhett and Darcy both
commented on how enthusiastic and well behaved our students were. A huge thank
you to Carla, for helping to organise these clinics.
This week we have been fortunate enough to have Chris and Alex, from Hockey
Victoria, come to run clinics for the students from Year One to Six. It has been great
to see the level of enthusiasm. I have already had at least one student comment that
they want to take up hockey. The purpose of these clinics, is to introduce new sports
and to have fun. I have included a flyer for students who would like to give hockey a
go. Thanks to Yvette and Melissa, a former parent, who promoted Holy Rosary as an
option for these clinics.
Interschool Sport
Summer Interschool sport starts this Friday for the Year 5/6 students with a home
game against Moonee Ponds West Primary School. Hot Shots tennis and European
handball will be played at school and soccer will be played at Holland Park.
Spectators are most welcome. Year 5/6 students and parents please note that our
fixture stated that Friday March 6th was originally an away game against Moonee
Ponds West, but is now an away game against Kensington Primary. European
Handball and Hot Shots tennis will be played at Kensington Primary with the soccer
played at Holland Park.
A reminder for your diary that our school Athletics will be held at Aberfeldie on
Monday March 16th. I hope to have some further information to share in the
newsletter next week.
Sporting Schools Victoria
If your child is turning ten or over this year and they are considered gifted or elite in
their sporting field, you may like to enter them to trial for selection to represent
Victoria in the National finals this year. I have included the link below, where you can
click on the sport that your child is involved in, and this will give you further
information, including entry requirements and closing dates.
“These championships offer gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in
higher levels of sporting competition against students from other Australian States and
Territories.
Participation in a School Sport Victoria Team Vic state team is self-funded. As a guide it may
cost between $2,000-$3,000 to participate. Costs may include uniforms, host state levies,
flights, transport, accommodation and meals. Costs will vary depending on the location of
the Championship, and Accommodation requirements.”
