Expectations

Customer expectations are rising year by year with the majority of today’s learners having grown up accessing the latest technological resources on demand. As paying consumers they expect assess to the latest resources, on demand to meet their individual learning needs.

It is now clear that as a result of this ubiquitous environment and the sheer volume of their interaction with it, today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. These differences go far further and deeper than most educators suspect or realise.


Learning Technologies by definition


Learning technology is the broad range of communication, information and related technologies that can be used to support learning, teaching, and assessment”. (Association for Learning Technology (ALT), 10/04/2007).

Learning Technologies can be thought of as any technology that can be used, or adapted, to deliver learning and teaching. For example; your mobile.

An innovation that captures attention, engages and deepens learning so the learner/teacher can self-measure/measure improvement.

Any technology YOU don’t quite understand that you’ve heard might improve teaching and learning!

Why use technology?

Why use them? Flexibility Efficiency Differentiation - inclusion Retention Behaviour Attainment Potential Anonymity

– Assessment, Formative, Summative, Performance based assessment and Objective assessment

– Evidence (system easy to use and gathering an appropriate level of information).


Active Learning - Using technology can:

Connect and collaborate and debate with other learners 24/7.

Captures attention, engages and deepens learning through:– Allows examples of best practice (a particular lesson/activity) to be

recorded and reviewed later and improvements can be made if needed. Self assessment/reflection.

Allows the learner to demonstrate the application of new skills

The opportunity to capture evidence outside of a Learning Provider environment for assessment.

Allows course work to be submitted in a variety of appropriate formats and from outside of the learning provider.

Accommodates personalised learning.


Considerations

Fit for purpose (assess the quality, consistency, availability, appropriate mechanism).

The User (what are the needs of the user, what are the barriers)? Environment (how will the use of technology effect or be effected by

the physical/non physical environment)? Sustainability (assess the sustainability of existing/potential/future

acquisitions ). Implementation (how will the technology be implemented)?

Support and training Documentation (assess the risk, assign/create appropriate controls).

EduApps

EduApps is the extension of AccessApps into two further themes, LearnApps and TeachApps

Applications include: Office, Planning/Organisation, Multimedia, Reading/Writing, Web Browsers, Presentation tools, Screen Capture, Learning Object Authoring, Moodle on a stick, Utilities, Backup, Simulation & Modelling.

Note: based on the experience of many other learning providers it is better to select, download and use the applications individually from both the AccessApps and EduApps collections.
